Korean Film No Longer Wedded to Romance
The Chosun Ilbo
Romance has apparently all-but disappeared from Korean films these days. It is something of a time-honored rule of thumb to include some love interest among the main characters of a Korean movie, regardless of genre. As recently as last year, box-office hits such as "The Thieves" and "Masquerade" all featured romantic tugs-of-war, or characters with a burning passion for someone. Even if the romance was not at the heart of the movie, it was always there to add spice to the plot.
However, this trend now seems to be on the wane. With the exception of the romantic comedy "Very Ordinary Couple" and disaster movie "The Tower," most of the films in the top 10 at the box office so far this year do not deal with common forms of love and romance.
For example, the thriller "Cold Eyes" featuring actor Jung Woo-sung and actress Han Hyo-joo eschews romance in favor of camaraderie between the main characters. The movie is still sweeping box office and recently attracted 5 million moviegoers.
"Miracle in Cell No. 7" focuses on parental affection using a correctional facility as a backdrop, while other recent hits like "New World" and "Fist of Legend" have no room for female characters as they center on the world of men.
2013080300406_0.jpg

Critics and filmgoers alike seem to be welcoming the turning tide. "Films reflect reality, which these days include more people living a hardscrabble life and barely managing to keep themselves together," said Kim Won, a film critic. "Cinematic characters that have no time for romance, as they have to fight for their lives, seem to be more appealing and sympathetic to moviegoers."
Instead of typical romantic interests, so-called bromances or male ensembles are more visible in recent Korean films like "New World" and "Secretly Greatly."
"These days, the kind of brotherhood or camaraderie you can witness in desperate situations, such as on the battlefield, is more popular amongst viewers than the stereotypical romance between a man and a woman," Kim said.

2013 Korean Film Festival: New Wave of Korean Cinema

Source: Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines
Korean Film Festival to feature contemporary trends in Korean cinema Banking on the strength of the Korean Wave in the Philippines, the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines will be featuring six popular Korean films in the 2013 Korean Film Festival slated to be held from September 18 to October 10 in Manila, Iloilo, Cebu and Davao. The film festival will kick off in SM Megamall and will run from September 18 to 22, to be followed by the SM Iloilo run from September 26 to 29. From October 3 to 6, the film festival will move to SM Cebu and will have its final run on October 10 to 13 at SM Lanang in Davao.
The films to be screened are Green Days (소중한 날의 꿈), Masquerade (광해, 왕이 된 남자), Sunny (써니), A Werewolf Boy (늑대소년), Deranged (연가시), and Dancing Queen (댄싱퀸). The animated film Green Days (소중한 날의 꿈), voiced by actors PARK Shin-hye, SONG Chang-eui and OH Yeon-soo, is a coming-of-age story of Yi-Rang, a track runner, Soo-Min, a pretty transfer student from Seoul and Chul-soo, as they work towards their dreams. Topbilling the period film Masquerade (광해, 왕이 된 남자) are LEE Byung-hun of the G.I Joe fame and HAN Hyo-joo as their respective characters tackle the intricacies of court life during the Joseon dynasty. In a turn of events, King Gwang-hae was poisoned and a court jester who looks remarkably like the king, Ha-sun, fills in the role of the king until the true king recovers fully. Ha-sun’s vastly different personality incites change in the morale among the people in the castle for the better. Third in the roster is the critically-acclaimed film Sunny (써니) that retells the story of seven girls whose friendship stretches far back in high school through the journey of Na-mi, one of the seven girls. Chun-hwa, one of the girls, is presently terminally ill and asks Na-mi to get together the old members of Sunny for the last time before she dies. Popular actors SONG Joong-ki and PARK Bo-young grace the fantasy-romance flick A Werewolf Boy (늑대소년) about the young “wolf boy” and a girl who had just moved to the small rural village as these two strangers find affection from each other against a cold world that shuns them both. In Deranged (연가시), panic grows across the country as an epidemic of suicides occur where the victims jump into the river. The alarmed government declares a state of emergency. Medical supplies salesman Jae-hyuk suspects his family is showing symptoms of the drowning victims and through his brother, Detective Jae-pil, they search for the antidote to such. In Dancing Queen (댄싱퀸) the wife of the Seoul mayoral candidate was a Dancing Queen, formerly a popular talent whose chase for her dreams came to an abrupt stop when her husband, Jung-min, decided to run for office. The movie goes through the journey of Jung-hwa as she balances her life as a wife of a political candidate and as a leader of the Dancing Queen. The 2013 Korean Film Festival is in cooperation with the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the Korea Tourism Organization – Manila (KTO), the Korea Copyright Commission, SM Cinema, SM Cinema Megamall, SM Cinema Lanang and LG. Admissions are free. For further information and queries, please contact the Korean Cultural Center at 555-1711 or email events@koreanculture.ph.koreanfilmfest2013_philippines.jpg

THE FAKE and NEW WORLD Bag Awards at SitgesKorean Genre Cinema Awarded in Spain by Pierce Conran KOBIZ

The Sitges - International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, one of the largest genre film events in the world, has demonstrated a consistent interest in Korean genre fare over the years, and this year was no different as a number of Korean films found their way onto the program. Out of those, a pair walked away with awards by the time the curtain closed on this year’s edition. YEUN Sang-ho’s sophomore feature The Fake has been getting a strong reception since its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last month and its selections in Austin’s Fantastic Fest and this month’s Busan International Film Festival. The dark feature was also well received in Sitges where it picked up the prize for Best Animation. Following a strong showing at home earlier this year, when it racked up over four million admissions, PARK Hoon-jung’s gangster saga New World has been thrilling audiences around the world. Well Go USA released it theatrically in North America and it was screened at many events, including the Jeonju, Vancouver and Moscow International Film Festivals. It also won a Jury Prize at the Beaune International Thriller Festival. Now it has bagged another award as it earned Best Feature Film in the Focus Asia category in Sitges. Korean cinema has had a long history at Sitges, going back as far as YOUN Yuh-jung’s Special Mention for Best Actress in 1972 for her role in KIM Ki-young’s The Insect Woman. This year’s 46th edition Sitges took place from October 11th to 20th.

2013 Blue Dragon Film Awards
by javabeans dramabeans.com
Fall marks the start of awards season, and today we have the 34th Blue Dragon Film Awards, one of the major film industry ceremonies, along with the Grand Bell (Daejong) Awards earlier this month and the Baeksang Awards in the spring.
You’ll recognize many familiar faces, not just from the other festivals and ceremonies this year but from years past. It’s kind of funny how the films change, but the pool of nominees seems almost static from year to year—perhaps one actor will hop from a lead role to a supporting one, or maybe someone will take a year off from the nomination circuit, but by and large we’re looking at a pretty small world.
But the fun part is always the red carpet, which was pretty star-studded this time around. Most attendees stuck to safe and familiar, which as a viewer and fan is less exciting because I get the feeling we’ve seen these all before. And it’s been a trend for the past year or more to have an overwhelming amount of black on the red carpet, followed by a smaller contingent favoring white, which makes me sad: Where be the color? The fun? The drama? I guess I’ll have to content myself with the handful of WTF choices, which aren’t necessarily attractive but are at least interesting.
Let’s take a look at who won this year…

Yay for Hwang Jung-min, who won for crime film New World. He’d been nominated for a Grand Bell Award a month ago (Grand Bell co-winners Ryu Seung-ryong and Song Kang-ho were also nominated for this category), so it’s nice to see him get the prize this time.
