'Judge from Hell' Director Jinpyo Park's Final Written Interview20241105050612_0_20241105181807420.jpg?t

[Herald Economy = Senior Reporter Seo Byeong-gi] In the SBS Friday-Saturday drama 'Judge from Hell', the anti-hero Devil (Park Shin-hye) feels a thrilling and refreshing catharsis when she separates human trash hidden behind the shadow of the law, such as school bullies and murderers.

This is a fantasy element, but the director of this drama, Park Jin-pyo, is a PD who has been in charge of SBS's 'I Want to Know That' for a long time, which is far from fantasy.

It seems that Director Park consulted with the writer to capture the emotions and wishes he felt while encountering a real murder case through 'That Know' and incorporated them into a fantasy drama. We had a written interview with Director Park Jin-pyo after the drama ended.

Q1. Did you expect the viewers' warm love for 'Judge from Hell'? How do you feel about the box office success?

First, I would like to sincerely thank the viewers for their support and deep love for our drama 'Judge from Hell' (hereafter referred to as 'JiJinSa'). We started broadcasting at the same time as we were doing the final post-production, so it was a great help until the end. It was very supportive.

In fact, I didn't think about the box office at all, even in part. That's because the main background and setting of 'Judge', the worldview of hell and the devil punishing sinners, and the fantasy, might be a bit unfamiliar to viewers, and on the other hand, I thought it needed some resistance.

However, thanks to the passionate support and love of viewers who sent 'Judge', all the staff and actors were able to work hard until the end and finish safely. Thank you again.

Q2. What did you focus on when directing “Judge from Hell”? The part

I paid the most attention to was how to effectively convey the writer’s excellent planning intention. In fact, the decisive factor that led me to direct “Judge” was a few lines in the planning intention.

“Before giving those who have given up on being human a chance to be educated, I hope that the victims and their families who lost their remaining chance at life will be comforted first.” And another line was “I hope that you will be uncomfortable.”

I believed that “Judge” could be completed only if I kept this planning intention until the end. All the answers are in the script, so I read the script over and over again and stayed true to the basics.

In terms of the drama, there are incidents that have appeared or are likely to appear in the news. The murderer and the victim who lost their life, the pain of the bereaved families who survived desperately, and another trial and strong punishment that begins after the trial ends, and the world of hell. A demon in a human body. A detective chasing the case. Their forbidden love. A demon that gradually becomes human and a detective that becomes darker. Their relationships and the comedy of the characters in various situations. And even the confrontation between the devil and the devil.

'Judge' has so many different genres mixed in it, and while taking advantage of the characteristics of each genre, I tried to create a tone that flows like water without any one thing standing out, like a nicely packaged gift set from a department store. That was my homework and concern from the initial planning stage until the final broadcast. I worked hard until the end.

Externally, the most important thing was to create and develop the characters while communicating with over 40 actors, including the fixed main characters and episode characters (special appearances).

Since I had to express the visuals and worldview of hell that no one had ever been to, I put a lot of effort into VFX, special makeup, art, props, costumes, and makeup. I didn't want to repeat the feeling that the visuals of hell had already been consumed in existing works. Even just a little bit. So I created the Gates of Hell from the entrance (referring to Rodin's Gates of Hell) and put in a phrase from the Divine Comedy (“Abandon all hope, ye who enter here”) and gave it the voice of Bael (played by Shin Sung-rok). When you open the gate and go in, a deadly beautiful field of red flowers spreads out in a mysteriously clear sky. It expressed the desire that humans always have in their hearts to walk on a flower path. The moment you touch the flowers, the flowers open their eyes and everything turns to ash and falls to the ground. The main building of Hell is a courthouse, and I designed it to feel like it exists just like in reality. Hell's messengers guard it, and there is a courtroom the same size as the courtroom in reality. The demons of Hell have a hierarchy similar to the real world. There, murderers are judged by Hell's law.

The trial of the devil (Bitna) that opens after the trial in reality begins with “The real trial will begin now,” and when the spell “Vial Inferno (To Hell!)” is chanted, Bitna’s eyes turn purple and a dagger is created. When the execution is over and the sinner (murderer) dies, the Gehenna seal is stamped on his forehead and the gates of hell are created around him. Then, the soul is sucked in. You fall straight into hell. The faces of the sinner (murderer) are stamped one after another on the front of the gate. When the gate closes, the trial is over!

In this way, all the execution processes are performed at night using VFX, lighting effects, special effects, special makeup, special props, martial arts, and drones. The 7 execution sequences that can be seen in the even-numbered episodes of the drama were filmed with all the staff and actors in a state of extreme tension and concentration. Then, the ‘judge’ cleaning demon Jae-Hyeon, Dong-Ju, appears and cleans up the scene.

The action scenes were directed realistically under the concept of lively action scenes with facial expressions, breathing, and breathing sounds, using various swords, spears, bows, guns, hammers, axes, etc. that the prop team created with all their might (they really worked hard) under the responsibility of directors Yoon Sung-min and Kwon Tae-ho. In particular, Bitna's action scenes were expressed starting from her lively facial expressions and focusing on powerful striking.

20241105050614_0_20241105181807428.jpg?t

The areas of photography, production design, lighting, recording, martial arts, art, props, makeup, costumes, music, mixing, editing, etc. are so renowned and creative that they helped me a lot as partners rather than subordinates to the director. They did their best in their respective fields so quietly that it would have been awkward if even one person had been missing. I asked them only one thing. Including me as the director, we should approach it as creatively as possible, but not stand out more than the actors’ acting or emotions. What’s really satisfying is that their efforts are all visible and heard on the screen. No one stands out, and it’s all very harmonious.

In particular, cinematographer Park Sung-yong, who has a vision for directing, production designer Kim Se-young, who is the king of scale and detail, and visual director Seong Sung-ju, who has infinite imagination, worked together as one body (of course, this is just my opinion) from the pre-production stage to the end, and even received help with directing.

The production system of the best production company Studio S (the know-how and judgment of CP Lee Ok-gyu, the amazing driving force of PD Yoon Yoon-sun and Kwon Ryung-ah, the genius B team director Jo Eun-ji who also served as assistant director, and assistant directors Kim Chang-hwan and Joo Soo-yeon) also played a huge role. They were a great help in the accident-free ending of 'Judge'.

Of course, you didn't ask, but I'll tell you anyway. If I, as a director, were to choose five factors that contributed to the success of 'Judge from Hell' (because everyone said it was a success), they would be:

1. A good script with great intentions

2. The best production company and staff

3. Park Shin-hye

4. The passionate performances of all the actors

5. Music (Director Jeon Chang-yeop's Gehenna and Sunmi OST)

Among them, actress Park Shin-hye was our hero who shouldered everything I mentioned above and charged forward to meet the viewers at the very front. She's an actress like gravity with her clear and transparent big eyes that shine (uncommon). All of us, including the viewers, are sucked into her and have a very strange experience in her world. “Welcome to my world” (There are many more lines, but these are lines that actress Park Shin-hye herself made up. They were also used as the main copy on the poster.) I think you all experienced this this time, but even I, the director, often watched her acting on the last monitor, forgetting to direct. It’s embarrassing, but… it’s true. She was Kang Bit-na and Justitia, but to me, she was Joan of Arc.

Q3. How was it working with the main actors including Park Shin-hye, Kim Jae-young, Kim In-kwon, and Kim Ah-young, as well as the many actors who made special appearances?

Kim Jae-young is an actor I met while looking for an actor to play Da-on. The moment I opened the door to the director’s office and came in, I felt an aura above his head. At the time, he didn’t look me in the eye and had a slightly shy expression, but I thought, “Huh? He’s cute?” and our eyes met. At that time, I felt an incredible manliness, like a lone wolf.

As you know, Da-on is a character who became a police officer after losing his family at a young age, and he has to suspect and love the devil Bitna. He later turns dark. At first glance, he seems like a three-dimensional character, but it would be a really difficult role for anyone. He silently guarded the scene without losing his signature positivity and cheerfulness. He was very sincere. He also did a great job of portraying his role. Now, I am also a passionate fan of his and I hope he will soar high.

Actor Kim In-kwon is an all-rounder actor loved by the entire nation, so I was honored and thankful just to be able to closely watch his face and acting filled with joy and sorrow. He is a lovable and cute devil. I remember laughing a lot while filming the scene where he was bullied by Bitna and Arong throughout Episode 14 and then moved to a temple and rang the bell.

Actress Kim Ah-young has really good eyes and clear pronunciation. In addition to her clear eyes, she is a good actress who can express various things, such as kind eyes, lively eyes, and eyes that follow someone. From the beginning, he chose Arong and proposed to her without meeting anyone or auditioning. There is no one but Kim Ah-young for Arong. She portrayed the role of Arong, who hides her identity as Benato and follows Bitna, and thus has many twists and turns, very refreshingly. I am sure she will become a great actress.

In addition, teacher Kim Young-ok, who is touching and an infinite honor just by being with us. Our teacher Nam Neung-mi, who firmly protected the set. Senior Kim Hong-pa with charisma. Actor Han Sang-jin, who led the atmosphere of the set with excitement despite his small role. The three sisters, Kim Jae-hwa, Kim Hye-hwa, and Kim Seung-hwa, who made the viewers cry in the latter half. The fantastic chemistry of the cleaning team, Lee Jung-ok, Ha Kyung-min. Hwangcheon Villa, Park Ji-yeon. Oh Han-gyeol. The detective team, Jeong Seok-yong, Kim Ji-hoon, Park Ji-hoon. And actor Lee Kyu-han, who wrote the history of villains in the latter half. Actor Choi Dong-goo. The court team, Lee Kyu-hoe, Lee Mi-do, Kim Kwang-gyu, Do Eun-ha, Dong Hyo-hee, and Lee Ga-yeon. And the devil team, Park Ho-san, Oh Na-ra, Shin Sung-rok, Jung Ha-dam, Yoon Tae-ha, and Kim Sang-woo, who gladly made a special appearance despite their small connections and small parts. Angel actor Kim Hyun-mok. The youngest child actor Yang Hee-sang

, the cutest on-set. Seniors Park Myung-shin and Jeong In-gi. Actress Park Jeong-yeon, who had a hard time getting hit a lot while playing the villain role. Actors Jang Do-ha, Im Se-ju, Yang Kyung-won, Oh Eui-sik, and Choi Dae-hoon, who passed away (in the drama) because they were hit so much. Senior Kang Shin-il, who played the role of the victims and their bereaved families. Senior Won Mi-won. Actors Lee Ho-jin, Seol Yu-jin, Seo Woo-seung, Lee So-yoon, Kim Nam-jin, Lee Seung-joo

, Jin Sung-min, Hwang Jung-yoon, Nam Soo-hyun, and Kim Han-gyeol. I am certain that if even one of these people had been missing, it would have been creaky because they all acted with their whole body and heart, and being able to see their acting up close on the front lines before the viewers was a privilege, a gift, and luck to me.

Q4. What message did you want to convey to the viewers through “Judge from Hell”?

In episode 13, Bitna’s trial, before sentencing Jeong Tae-gyu (Lee Kyu-han) to death, “In the end, what they truly want is condolences to the victims who lost their lives unjustly and consolation to the bereaved families who have lived a life like death. The law does not forgive the crimes that the victims and their bereaved families do not forgive.”

Bitna, the production staff, the writer, and the director, I walked a difficult path to say this line, and with this line, we wanted to convey the hearts of the people who created “Judge” to the viewers in episode 14, when Jeong Tae-gyu is executed and the deceased are gathered one by one. I hope the viewers, the production staff, Bitna, and all of us feel the same way.

And two years later, Bitna and I face the victims and their bereaved families. Despite this, they are still living and are trying to take steps forward little by little. I hope “Judge from Hell” can be a small comfort to someone like that.

The production team that created 'The Judge' hopes that the day will come when these simple and honest words that Bitna used to playfully say to children, "Good people live happily and bad people get punished, that's justice," will become not just a hope, ideal, or fantasy in our hearts, but a very natural reality.

[Exclusive] Director Jinpyo Park of 'Judge of Hell': "I was happy and bitter about the cider evaluation" [EN:Interview]

Director Park Jin-pyo of SBS drama 'Judge from Hell', which ended after recording 1st place for 7 consecutive weeks (Newsen DB)

[Newsen Kim Beom-seok] A place that makes good kalguksu usually has delicious sujebi. Director Park Jin-pyo, who has not lost the top spot in weekend dramas for 7 weeks with SBS's "Judge from Hell" (written by Jo Yi-soo), is no exception. His main stage was movies. From "Feel Good to Die" that deals with the sexuality of the elderly, to "You Are My Destiny" that depicts the pure love between an AIDS-infected woman and a rural bachelor, to "Voice of a Man" and "My Love by My Side" that deal with permanent unsolved kidnapping cases, he has mainly shed light on uncomfortable truths through works with strong social implications.

His first drama, "Judge from Hell", also boldly put the limits of the law that cannot keep up with reality and the sometimes absurdly lenient judiciary's lenient tolerance on trial. Every time the chilling Kang Bit-na (Park Shin-hye) punishes heinous criminals who have given up on being human outside the courtroom, the viewer ratings soared. The public cheered loudly whenever the perpetrators who cleverly evaded the law by using mental weakness or fabricating evidence paid the price painfully. After the show ended, I met director Park Jin-pyo at a restaurant in Bangbae-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul.

▲ I was secretly scared of 'Jeongnyeon' coming up

. - She became so thin that I couldn't recognize her.
"I lost 10kg when I was editing the final episode, but now I'm slowly getting back to normal rhythm. I feel good because I'm getting more attention and support than I expected, but I'm also a little dazed. (Laughs) I'm really glad that it ended safely without any incidents or accidents."

- You didn't lose 1st place to tvN's 'Jeongnyeon' until episode 14.
"The speed and momentum of the show coming up was a little scary. (Laughs) I cleared my mind in the final episode thinking, 'Maybe it could turn around,' but it barely won by 1.8%. The 2049 viewership ratings were high across the board, but I was especially happy that the attention from people in their 20s and 30s increased as the show went on. “I am close with Kwon Mi-kyung, the CEO of the production company ‘Jeongnyeon’, who worked together on the previous work ‘Brave Citizen’, and I am glad that both of us are doing well.”

Director Park Jin-pyo (center/Newsen DB) posing with the main characters of 'Judge from Hell' Kim In-kwon, Park Shin-hye, Kim Ah-young, and Kim Jae-young (from left)

- I heard that you left behind the production cost.
“I heard that Studio S liked it quite a bit. The average production cost per episode was set at around 1.3 billion won, which is half of ‘Jeongnyeoni’. (Laughs) In fact, the more you touch CG, the more money you make, so I promised myself from the beginning to stick to the budget. Since it was my first external director after Studio S spun off, I felt burdened and thought I had to leave a good precedent. Even when filming a movie, sticking to the budget was an iron rule.”

▲ A competitive and angry society that distrusts the judiciary

- Did you have a feeling that it would be a hit?
“I had high hopes for it because the data for personal revenge dramas in the past 3-4 years were above average, but I didn’t expect double-digit viewership ratings and such a high buzz. I’m grateful to everyone who supported ‘Judge of Hell.’ I’m happy, but I can’t help but feel bitter.”

- The reason for the bitterness?
“I think it’s proof that our society is tired of competition and anger. Everyone is angry about something, and if they have a target or coordinates to vent their anger on, they’re ready to throw rocks. It is bitter because it clearly shows that there is little expectation or trust in the judiciary. Even in fiction, didn’t the public feel catharsis when they saw the perpetrator being punished in the Hammurabi style? Originally, the law tends to reflect reality late, but it is regrettable.”

- Public opinion on the death penalty has once again heated up.

202411051448301610_3_20241105151514880.j
Park Shin-hye, who showed outstanding anti-hero acting, has become a top actress. (News DB)

“We have worked hard to become a country that abolishes the death penalty, but it is not easy to reverse it. It takes a lot of time and money, and above all, it can be a waste of administrative power. However, I think that criminals who do not repent their crimes and show shamelessness to their victims should pay the price they deserve. Parole or suspension of sentence should not be abused.”

▲Jungdae Yeon-yeong and junior Park Shin-hye’s character are also great

. - In the final episode, the villain Lee Kyu-han meets a miserable end in a place reminiscent of a guillotine.
“It is the picture the writer intended, and I also tried my best to live up to that. Regardless of whether execution is right or wrong, I wanted to ask whether our society’s safety net is functioning properly and what we need to do to make it so.”

- We cannot leave out Park Shin-hye’s passionate performance.
“There must have been many difficult aspects, such as the action and subtle emotional changes, but I am just proud of her for doing so well. She is a basic actress who is courteous to her villain counterparts, and she also has great character. Above all, I fully demonstrated my qualities and skills as a top.”

- What are your future plans?
“I’m into mountaineering these days. I go to Bukhansan, Cheonggyesan, and Jirisan. When I direct a drama, I realize that physical strength is the most important. You need core muscles to endure until the end, and another thing. You have to remember all 1,000 scenes without fail, so brain capacity is also very important. (Laughs)”

How Park Shin-hye embraced her ‘devilish’ side in ‘The Judge from Hell’

For Park Shin-hye, portraying a devilish judge was not an attempt to change her image for good. Rather, it’s her curiosity about how the public would perceive her as an actress, as she’s usually known for taking on wholesome characters.

In “The Judge from Hell,” Park stars as Kang Bit-na, a judge at the 18th Criminal Division of Seoul Central District Court. After her sudden death, she is possessed by a demonic being called Justitia, in hopes of fulfilling its mission of killing and sending criminals back to hell.

This allows Bit-na to fully embrace her demonic side, with her sharp-tongued wit and constant eyebrow raises, contributing to her fall into the dark side.

Yet Park didn’t intend for Bit-na to be a statement of how much she’s changed. “I wasn’t necessarily thinking about going through a transformation in my acting career,” she said at a media conference in Seoul. “Rather, it was the curiosity of how people would react if they saw me in this role, that made me decide to be in this series.”

Park is notable for taking on sweet yet headstrong roles in the majority of her career. They’re usually known for being kind-hearted or they would come from humble beginnings. But when they find themselves in a rut, they wouldn’t hesitate to fight back — usually leading to happy endings.

These are seen in the K-dramas “You’re Beautiful,” “Heartstrings,” “The Heirs,” “Pinocchio” and “The Doctors,” among others.

Despite this, the actress showed her range in different genres, including the crime film “Heart Blackened” in 2017 and the psychological thriller film “The Call” three years later.

“All the roles I have taken up until now have given me joy and happiness,” Park said of her past roles. “And I wondered how much I’ll have fun with ‘The Judge from Hell.’ I had so much fun reading the script. I could picture each scene from the scenario, like a movie unfolding before my eyes.”

Meeting expectations

One of the traits worth noting about Bit-na is how “she doesn’t care about the hierarchy,” despite her position in the district court. “She doesn’t care about what others think and says whatever needs to be said,” Park said, describing her character.

“Her personality is as daring as bubbly soda. As the devil Justitia from hell enters Kang Bit-na’s body, she lives her life as Kang Bit-na,” she added.

Embracing Bit-na’s turn into the dark side was an opportunity for Park to “meet the expectations” she set for herself. This includes showing how much she matured, not only as an actress but also as a woman.

“As we live, we develop various personalities. We become more aware of ourselves, as we meet various people and experience all kinds of things. I was wondering how I could show that, and my character Bit-na seemed to be dynamic,” she said.

“I thought I could show all these experiences and use them to portray the character. It means a lot to me if others see that and feel the same way,” continued Park.

The actress’ ambition didn’t go unnoticed by filmmaker Park Jin-pyo, who decided on her casting. “Park Shin-hye got stuck with a certain type of role, like a Candy type. But I saw the desire and ambition she had inside of her as an actor.”

Touching on Bit-na’s personality, Park stressed that the devilish judge still had a “lovely side” to her, which the actress can give justice to.

“We were wondering who could portray both characteristics. All our production team agreed on Park Shin-hye and I felt the same way. So that’s why I decided to cast her. You’ll be more surprised than you imagined, and you’ll fall in love with her more,” he said.

The K-drama, which is available on a streaming platform, also stars Kim Jae-young, Lee Kyu-han and Kim Ah-young.

Judge from Hell Choi Dong-gu

[Sports Today Im Si-ryeong] Choi Dong-goo of 'Judge from Hell' shared a behind-the-scenes story.

Actor Choi Dong-goo met with reporters at the Sports Today building on the 7th and had an interview about the end of the SBS Friday-Saturday drama 'Judge from Hell'.

'Judge from Hell' is a fantasy action drama about the coexistence of good and evil, where Kang Bit-na (Park Shin-hye), a demon who enters the body of a judge, meets the humane and passionate detective Han Da-on (Kim Jae-young) in a hellish reality and is reborn as a true judge by punishing criminals.

Choi Dong-goo plays the role of Jeong Seon-ho, the illegitimate child of five-term National Assembly member Jeong Jae-geol (Kim Hong-pa) and the younger brother of Jeong Tae-gyu (Lee Kyu-han), CEO of Taeok Industrial Development. He passionately portrayed the duality of

a drug addict who has a history of drug addiction and the pain of losing his mother when he was young. Choi Dong-goo has previously received favorable reviews for his immersive acting as a drug addict in many works. He left a strong impression in this work as well, performing a completely different version of a drug addict.

On this day, Choi Dong-goo said, "I'm wary of acting like a typical drug-related character. This time, rather than expressing the worn-out appearance of a drug addict, I focused on Jung Seon-ho's narrative. I acted by getting a little closer to the essence."

He confessed, "Jung Seon-ho is a profound friend. He is the only one in 'Judge from Hell' who has all the conditions. He is a victim, a bereaved family member, an accomplice, a perpetrator, and also a murderer's family. It was difficult to express him because he has all those conditions."

In particular, regarding the ending where Jung Seon-ho takes his own life, he said, "I thought that even though Seon-ho did something bad, was involved, and was an accomplice, he was pure and a gentle friend. At the end, I had two thoughts: 'So he's trying to repent for his sins like this, and this guy is a coward to the end. He runs away without paying the full price for his crimes."

While doing so, he also shared a behind-the-scenes story, saying, "In the original script, there was a line that said Seonho took his life and was in hell. But it was edited out. When I watched the broadcast, it felt like Taegyu Jeong had killed me on purpose, so I thought, 'Ah, this makes sense. '" [
