In the drama, Kang Bit-na is a judge who sternly punishes the sins of the wicked, and shows her extremely evil side by sending humans to hell according to her standards of judgment. Park Shin-hye showed her cool eyes, cold expression, and merciless actions when dealing with criminals, and showed her acting that is optimized for the drama genre called 'dopamine-popping cider action fantasy'. In particular, her intense facial expression changes in the judgment scene and her detailed acting in the situational drama gave viewers a sense

of vicarious satisfaction and garnered attention day after day. In the last episode, Kang Bit-na was depicted as she deeply contemplates her identity and justice and searches for a new path. In the end, she gets a chance to return to being human, and she gently resonates with viewers by raising the topic of 'what is true justice'. Park Shin-hye skillfully controlled her complex emotional line and earnestly expressed Kang Bit-na's human growth, receiving enthusiastic reviews from the public.

Lee Kyu-han's 'Jeong Tae-gyu', an overwhelming presence as a crazy villain
Lee Kyu-han gave a passionate performance as the villain 'Jung Tae-gyu', the ex-fiancé of Kang Bit-na, played by Park Shin-hye, and a man who acts thoroughly for his own desires. Jung Tae-gyu appears to be a well-mannered person on the outside, but he hides his mean spirit of manipulating and threatening people behind the scenes. Lee Kyu-han gave viewers goosebumps with his lines and facial expressions that pressured others, revealing hidden cynicism along with a

subtle smile. In particular, despite being a character dealing with villains, his delicate psychological expressions maximized his appeal as a villain, making it impossible for viewers to take their eyes off him. Jung Tae-gyu's mad acting to achieve what he wants heightened the tension of the drama and successfully highlighted Lee Kyu-han's presence as a villain.

The ending leaves a touching aftertaste and the possibility of a season 2

This drama, which featured the outstanding acting transformations of Park Shin-hye and Lee Kyu-han, garnered attention for its complex characters that straddle the line between good and evil, and is even hinting at the possibility of a season 2, further raising expectations.

'Judge from Hell' left a touching aftertaste in the last episode as Kang Bit-na got a chance to return to being human. She looks back at the villains she punished and struggles on the border between good and evil, making her think about each person's justice and responsibility. The ending raises curiosity about whether Kang Bit-na will be able to live a life as a human again, and includes elements that hint at her future journey, raising expectations for Season 2.

This drama maintained tension until the end with Park Shin-hye and Lee Kyu-han's perfect characterization and immersive acting, leaving viewers with a deep aftertaste. The complex story of the two main characters, where good and evil are intertwined, is likely to be explored in more depth in Season 2. The production team is also said to be planning an expanded worldview along with a follow-up story, stimulating fans' anticipation.

'Judge from Hell' has established itself as a work that poses questions about human nature to viewers by unfolding an interesting story along with confrontations with various villains. This drama, which stands out for the groundbreaking acting transformation of Park Shin-hye and Lee Kyu-han, will remain in the memories of fans for a long time.

심적으로 표현하기 많이 힘들었던 역할이었지만,
존경하는 제작진 분들과, 소중한 배우들이 함께 만들어 나갔던 작품.

<Judge from Hell>

The conflict between angels and devils that lies deep inside,
standing on the border between good and evil, facing countless conflicts alone,
overcoming conflicts, and finally making a big choice.

At that time, at that moment,
if Satan had just passed by the Jeong family, if he had walked a little later,
then, perhaps, Seon-ho would have received much love and grown up.

In a split second, everything changed,
and he had no choice but to rely on drugs.

Seon-ho, who did not know the existence of the devil, the existence of Satan,
the cause of his family's tragedy, the reason for his crime,
everything.

Lastly,
since he was cowardly but could not stand anywhere,
Seon-ho accepted everything and asked for forgiveness by choosing his own death.

Even if it was an intentional act,
I would have gone to hell for the responsibility of a great mistake,
so I sincerely hope that he repents his sins there and is reincarnated as a good child.

-

A work that approached the unknown great dimensions of the world,
like a play, or perhaps, like a cruel fairy tale.

It was a role that was difficult to express mentally,
but it was a work created together with the respected production staff and precious actors.

I was honored and happy to have been able to participate as a member.

Goodbye.

5 Success Factors Revealed by Director of 'Judge from Hell' [Q&A]

[TV Daily Reporter Kim Jin-seok] Director Park Jin-pyo of 'Judge from Hell' talked about the factors behind the play's success.

The SBS Friday-Saturday drama 'Judge from Hell' (written by Jo Yi-soo and directed by Park Jin-pyo, hereinafter referred to as 'Judge'), which ended on the 2nd, is a cider action fantasy drama about the devil Kang Bit-na (Park Shin-hye) who enters the body of a judge, meeting the humane and passionate detective Han Da-on (Kim Jae-young) in a hellish reality and being reborn as a true judge by punishing criminals. It is a fantasy drama that will likely be liked or hated, and it started with a viewership rating of 6.8% for the first episode (based on Nielsen Korea nationwide households) and ended with double-digit viewership ratings from episode 6 onwards. In the final episode, Kang Bit-na's appearance hinting at a season 2 caught people's attention.

Director Park Jin-pyo, who directed the production, said in a recent written interview, "I sincerely thank the viewers for their support and deep love. We started broadcasting at the same time as we were doing the final post-production, and it was a great help until the very end. It was very reassuring."

Director Park said he didn't think about box office success. He said, "In fact, I didn't think about box office success at all, even partially. That's because the main background and setting of 'Judge from Hell', the worldview of hell and the devil punishing sinners, and the fantasy might be a bit unfamiliar to viewers, and I thought it would require some resistance." He expressed his gratitude, saying, "Thanks to the passionate support and love of the viewers, all the staff and actors were able to do their best until the end and finish safely."

◆ Below is the full Q&A with Director Jinpyo Park

Q1. What was the main focus when directing 'Judge from Hell'?

The part that I paid the most attention to was probably 'How can I effectively convey the writer's excellent planning intention?' In fact, the decisive factor that led me to direct 'Judge' was a few lines of the planning intention. 'Before giving a chance to be educated to those who have given up on being human, I hope that the victims and their bereaved families who were robbed of their remaining chance to live will be comforted first.' And another line was 'I hope you will be uncomfortable.' I believed that 'Judge' could be completed only if I never forget this planning intention until the end. All the answers are in the script, so I read the script over and over again and stayed true to the basics.

In terms of the drama, there are incidents that have appeared or are likely to appear in the news. The murderer and the victim who lost their life, the pain of the bereaved family who survived desperately, and another trial that begins after the trial ends and a strong punishment, and the world of hell. A demon that has entered a human body. A detective chasing the case. Their forbidden love. A demon that is becoming more human and a detective that is becoming darker. The comedy of the characters that appear in their relationships and various situations. And even a confrontation between demons.

'Judge' is a mix of so many different genres, and while bringing out the characteristics of each genre, I tried to create a unified tone that flows like water without any one genre standing out, like a nicely packaged gift set from a department store. This was my homework, concern, and effort from the initial planning stage until the final broadcast. Externally, the most important work was creating and developing characters through communication with over 40 actors, including the fixed main characters and episode characters (special appearances).

Because we had to express the visuals and worldview of hell that no one has ever been to, we put a lot of effort into VFX, special effects, art, props, costumes, and makeup. I didn't want to repeat the feeling that the visuals of hell had already been consumed by previous works. Even just a little bit. That's why we created the gates of hell from the entrance (referring to Rodin's Gates of Hell) and put in a phrase from the new song ('Abandon all hope, ye who enter here'). We gave it Bael's (Shin Sung-rok) voice. When you open the gate and go in, a deadly beautiful red flower field spreads out in a mysteriously clear sky. It expressed the desire that humans always have in their hearts to walk on a flower path. The moment you touch the flowers, the flowers open their eyes and everything turns to ash and falls to the ground. The main building of hell is a courthouse, and I designed it to feel like it exists just like in reality. Hell's lions guard it, and there is a courtroom the same size as the courtroom in reality. The demons of hell have a hierarchy similar to the real world. There, they judge murderers according to hell's law.

The trial of the devil (Shinna) that opens after the trial in reality begins with "The real trial will begin now" and when you chant the spell "Vial Inferno (To hell!)" Shinna's eyes turn purple and a dagger is created. After the execution is over and the sinner (murderer) dies, the Gehenna seal is stamped on their forehead and only then the gates of hell are created around them. And their souls are sucked in. You fall straight into hell. The faces of the sinners (murderers) are stuck one by one in front of the gates. When the gates close, the trial is over!

Like this, the entire execution process is done at night with a combination of VFX, lighting effects, special effects, special makeup, special props, martial arts, and drones. The seven execution sequences seen in the even-numbered episodes of the drama were filmed with all the staff and actors concentrating in a state of extreme tension. Then, the 'judge' cleaning devil Jae-yeon and Dong-ju appear to clean up the scene. The action scenes were directed realistically under the concept of action with living expressions, breathing sounds, and breathing by utilizing various swords, spears, bows, guns, hammers, axes, etc. that the prop team created with all their might under the responsibility of directors Yoon Sung-min and Kwon Tae-ho (they really worked hard). Bit-na's action in particular was expressed starting from her living expressions and focusing on the powerful impact.

The areas of photography, production design, lighting, recording, martial arts, art, props, makeup, costumes, music, mixing, editing, etc. are so renowned and creative that they helped me a lot as partners rather than subordinate to the director. They did their best in their respective fields so quietly that it would have been awkward if even one person had been missing. I asked them only one thing. That we, including myself as the director, approach things as creatively as possible, but not stand out more than the actors' acting or emotions. What's really satisfying is that their efforts are all visible and heard on screen. No one stands out, and it's all very harmonious.

In particular, cinematographer Park Sung-yong with a directing eye, production designer Kim Se-young with scale and detail, and visual director (vfx) Seong Hyeong-ju with boundless imagination worked together as if they were one body (of course, this is just my opinion) from the pre-production stage to the end, and I even received help with directing. The production system of the best production company Studio S (CP Lee Ok-gyu's know-how and judgment, PD Yoon Yoon-sun and Kwon Ryeong-ah's amazing driving force, genius B team director Jo Eun-ji who also served as assistant director, and assistant directors Kim Chang-hwan and Joo Soo-yeon) also played a huge role. They were a great help in the accident-free ending of 'Judge'.

Of course you didn't ask, but I'll tell you anyway. If I, as a director, were to pick five factors that contributed to the success of Judge from Hell (because everyone says it's a success),

1. A good script with great intentions 2. The best production company and staff 3. Park Shin-hye 4. Passionate performances by all actors 5. Music (Director Jeon Chang-yeop's Gehenna and Sunmi OST)

Among them, actress Park Shin-hye was our hero who shouldered everything I mentioned earlier and charged forward, meeting the viewers at the very front. She is an actress like gravity with her clear and transparent big eyes that shine (uncommon). All of us, including the viewers, were sucked into her and had a very magical experience in her world. "Welcome to my world" (there are many more lines, but these are lines that actress Park Shin-hye herself made up. They were even used as the main copy on the poster). I think you all experienced this time, but even I, the director, often watched her acting from the very back monitor, forgetting to direct. It's embarrassing, but it's true. She was Kang Bit-na and Justitia, but to me, she was Joan of Arc.

Q2. How did you feel working with the main actors including Park Shin-hye, Kim Jae-young, Kim In-kwon, and Kim A-young, as well as the many actors who made special appearances?

Kim Jae-young is an actor I met while looking for an actor to play Da-on. The moment I opened the door to the director's office and walked in, I felt an aura above his head. At that time, he didn't look me in the eye and had a slightly shy expression, but when I felt, "Huh? He's cute?", our eyes met. At that time, I felt an incredible manliness like a lone wolf. As you know, Da-on's character is a police officer who lost his family at a young age and has to suspect and love the devil Bit-na. He later turns dark. At first glance, he seems like a three-dimensional character, but it would be a really difficult role for anyone. He silently guarded the set without losing his signature positivity and cheerfulness. Very diligently. He also did a great job of portraying his role. Now, I'm also a huge fan of his and I'm rooting for him to soar high.

Actor Kim In-kwon is a versatile actor loved by the entire nation, so I was honored and grateful just to be able to closely watch his face and acting filled with joy and sorrow. He is a lovable and cute devil. I remember laughing a lot while filming the scene where he was bullied by A-rong throughout Episode 14 and then moved to a temple and rang the bell at a church.

Actress Kim Ah-young is an actress with very good eyes and clear pronunciation. In addition to clear eyes, she is a good actress who can express various things such as kind eyes, living eyes, and eyes that follow someone. She is an actress who chose Arong from the beginning and proposed to her without meeting anyone or auditioning. She said that Arong is only Kim Ah-young. She portrayed the role of Arong, who hides her identity as Benato and follows Bitna, and thus has many twists and turns, very novelly. I am sure she will become a good actress.

In addition, teacher Kim Young-ok, who was touched and infinitely honored just by being with us. Our teacher Nam Neung-mi, who firmly protected the set. Senior Kim Hong-pa with charisma. Actor Han Sang-jin, who led the atmosphere on set despite his small role. The three sisters Kim Jae-hwa, Kim Hye-hwa, and Kim Seung-hwa, who made the viewers cry in the latter half. Lee Jung-ok, Ha Kyung-min, and Lee Jung-ok from the cleaning team with fantastic chemistry. Park Ji-yeon from Hwangcheon Villa. Actor Oh Han-gyeol. Detective team actors Jeong Seok-yong, Kim Ji-hoon, and Park Ji-hoon. And actor Lee Kyu-han, who wrote the history of villains in the latter half. Actor Choi Dong-goo. The court team's Lee Kyu-hoe, Lee Mi-do, Kim Kwang-gyu, Do Eun-ha, Dong Hyo-hee, and Lee Ga-yeon. And the devil team's Park Ho-san, Oh Na-ra, Shin Sung-rok, Jeong Ha-dam, Yoon Tae-ha, and Kim Sang-woo, who readily made special appearances despite their small connections and small parts. Angel actor Kim Hyun-mok. The youngest child actor Yang Hee-sang, the cutest on-set. Senior Park Myeong-shin, and senior Jeong In-gi.

Actress Park Jung-yeon, who had a hard time taking on the role of the villain and getting beaten up so much. Actors Jang Do-ha, Im Se-ju, Yang Kyung-won, Oh Eui-sik, and Choi Dae-hoon, who passed away (in the drama) because they were beaten so much. Senior Kang Shin-il and Senior Won Mi-won, who played the roles of the victims and their bereaved families. Actors Lee Ho-jin, Seol Yu-jin, Seo Woo-seung, Lee So-yoon, Kim Nam-jin, Lee Seung-joo, Jin Sung-min, Hwang Jung-yoon, Nam Soo-hyun, and Kim Han-gyeol.

I am sure that if even one of them had been missing, it would have been awkward because they all gave their whole body and soul to the performance.

It was a privilege, a gift, and a blessing for me to be able to see their performances up close on the front lines before the viewers.

Q3. What message did you want to convey to viewers through ‘Judge from Hell’?

In Episode 13, Bitna's trial, before sentencing Jung Tae-gyu to death, "In the end, what they truly want is to mourn the victims who lost their lives unjustly and comfort the bereaved families who have lived a life like death. The law does not forgive the crimes that the victims and their bereaved families do not forgive." Bitna, the production staff, the writer, and the director, I walked a difficult path to say this line, and with this line, in Episode 14, after punishing Jung Tae-gyu, we wanted to convey the hearts of the people who created 'Judge' to the viewers in the scene where the deceased are gathered one by one. I hope the viewers, the production staff, Bitna, and all of us feel the same way. And two years later, Bitna and I face the victims and their bereaved families. Despite that, they are still living and are trying to take a step forward little by little. I hope that 'Judge from Hell' can be a small comfort to someone like that.

The production team that created Judge hopes that the day will come when the simple and honest words that Bitna used to playfully say to children, "Good people live happily and bad people get punished, that's justice," will become not just a hope, ideal, or fantasy in our hearts, but a very natural reality.

Q4. Why do you think 'Judge from Hell' was loved by viewers among the many competitive dramas in the same time slot?

Honestly, there were more competitive works than I thought, and there were works with high completion and buzz. But I was able to endure it all thanks to the support and encouragement of the viewers.

From a director's perspective, I think the reason it was so well-received was because of the refreshing charm of our drama. Not only because it's a cider drama, but also because of the charm of the character Kang Bit-na, played by Park Shin-hye. Kang Bit-na is an anti-hero, which we don't often see in cider dramas. The fact that she gives a light punishment and lets the criminal go suggests some criticism. I think the catharsis from the bold words and actions of such an anti-hero was huge. In addition, Park Shin-hye's passionate performance made this aspect of Kang Bit-na's character stand out even more.

The conclusion in one line could be summarized as "The monstrous actress Park Shin-hye met a refreshing and good script."

Q5. How did you feel while directing your first drama?

Well, I have come to respect drama directors even more. There are two reasons. 1. I think I need to increase my brain capacity. 2. I think I need to increase my physical strength.

Since 'Judge' is a 14-part series, if it were a movie, I would have to have 7 movie scripts in my head. Because my brain capacity was exceeded, I had no choice but to live with a pad in my hand. And since the working hours and periods were long, it was 3 to 4 times harder physically compared to the other days. They say that mental strength comes from physical strength, so I will have to work out hard from now on.

And in my early 20s, I always thought I would direct a drama someday, and I realized my dream belatedly.

Kim Jae-young "'Park Shin-hye's Man' Dream Fulfilled...'Hell's Judge 2? Definitely Appear" [Interview Summary]

Reporter Jeong Min-gyeong2024. 11. 5. 17:50

Actor Kim Jae-young of 'Judge from Hell' mentioned the possibility of a season 2.

On the afternoon of the 5th, an interview with actor Kim Jae-young from the recently concluded SBS drama 'Judge from Hell' (hereafter 'Judge from Hell') was conducted at a cafe in Apgujeong-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul.

'Judge from Hell' is a cider action fantasy piece depicting the coexistence of good and evil, where the demon Kang Bit-na, who enters the body of a judge, meets the humane and passionate detective Han Da-on in a hellish reality and is reborn as a true judge by punishing criminals.

In the drama, Kim Jae-young plays the role of passionate detective Han Da-on, who is infinitely generous to the weak but absolutely unforgiving to the strong.

20241105175006110rtpn.jpg

When asked about his family's reaction to the popular ending of 'Judges of Hell', Kim Jae-young said, "Actually, my parents have never watched all of the dramas I've been in. They said that my previous works were too dark (laughs). But I'm glad they enjoyed it this time."

He continued, "At first, I was a bit skinny, but then I was told, 'Don't lose too much weight. You need to have a nice physique,' so I lost less weight, but my mother said, 'Why don't you take care of yourself?'" and shared his honest reaction, making people laugh.

When asked if there were any difficult parts while filming, he answered, "After episode 8, there was a lot of talk about having to turn into a wreck, so I think I was very powerless at the time." He continued, "I've never actually lost a family member, so I can't completely understand the feeling, but I think I put a lot of the feelings of losing something precious into myself."

20241105175007620xqmx.jpg

As 'Judges of Hell' ended successfully, expectations for season 2 are also growing. Regarding this, Kim Jae-young expressed his affection, saying, "It would be great if there was a season 2. I think it was a drama that ended very well."

He then raised expectations for Season 2 by saying, "If there's a Season 2, the character Han Da-on will appear as a police officer like in Season 1, but now that they're a couple, I wonder how that will play out." When asked if he would be willing to appear in Season 2 if it were produced, he responded, "I would definitely appear."

Since they achieved such good results, are there any expectations for the year-end award ceremonies? Regarding this, Kim Jae-young expressed his greed by saying, "I don't have any expectations for an award, but I hope Park Shin-hye receives something good," and "I think we might be able to win the Best Couple Award."

At the production conference, he expressed his ambition to "become Park Shin-hye's man," and after the drama ended, he expressed his satisfaction, saying, "I'm very satisfied," and "I feel like my dream has come true."

Regarding the character he would like to try in the future, he said, "I want to try a romantic comedy or a character who is ruined," and "I've never done a proper romantic comedy before, so I want to do it before it's too late. Now that I'm older, I wonder if I won't be able to do things like school dramas," making everyone laugh.

When asked about his ultimate goal as an actor, he revealed his aspirations, saying, "I want to become an actor who does the work I want to do. It's a difficult goal, but as I said earlier, I want to be an actor who can choose genres like ruined dramas or romantic comedies."

Kim Jae-young is having a warm year with 'Hell's Judge' and a fan meeting. He said, "It takes almost a year to film one project, but I was so happy to wrap it up so well and have a fan meeting." He continued, "I'm getting more ambitious about the project, and I'm thinking about ways to show more sides of me," expressing his desire for active activities and raising expectations.

[Sports Korea Reporter Kim Hyun-hee] Actress Park Shin-hye has created a new life character by displaying fresh acting skills that she has never shown before through 'Judge from Hell'.

'Judge from Hell' is an action fantasy about the coexistence of good and evil where the demon Kang Bit-na, who enters the body of a judge, meets the humane and passionate detective Han Da-on in a hellish reality and is reborn as a true judge by punishing criminals.

In addition, he was given three years to live as a human by the devil Bael (Shin Sung-rok). Kang Bit-na lived her life as a judge, and at the same time, she did her best to love Han Da-on (Kim Jae-young) during the time given. In the process, Kang Bit-na accepted Bael's offer to let her live as a human if she sent 10 criminals to hell, and Han Da-on told Kang Bit-na, "I will respect your choice." After that, a criminal appeared in front of Kang Bit-na, and Kang Bit-na introduced herself as "the judge from hell," and the drama ended.

Gu Man-do was dispirited by Kang Bit-na's words, but he said what he wanted to say, and at the same time, he helped Kang Bit-na with her hardships, or when Kang Bit-na was angry, he made remarks that touched on facts, making her even angrier. Kang Bit-na glared at Gu Man-do, who she found annoying but couldn't hate, and gave him a sharp remark, leaving a humorous point in the drama.

In this way, Park Shin-hye displayed a variety of charms through her character in this work, showing off a new side of herself and presenting a fresh charm.

The final episode of SBS's Friday-Saturday drama 'Judge from Hell' (written by Jo Yi-soo, directed by Park Jin-pyo and Jo Eun-ji, produced by Studio S) that ended on the 2nd recorded 11.9% nationwide, 11.3% in the metropolitan area, and a peak viewership rating of 14.7% according to Nielsen Korea. '

Judge from Hell' is a story about a judge who has a demon in his body and cleverly evades the law and punishes criminals who have evaded it, sending them to hell. In the process, it deals with real-life cases such as dating violence, insurance murder, and child abuse, drawing viewers in. However, there were criticisms that the level of violence was high, and that the scenes where the criminals were punished were also cruel. In
addition, the scene where the main character Kang Bit-na (actress Park Shin-hye) punishes a criminal also became a hot topic, and viewers who were frustrated by the weaknesses of the judicial system received 'refreshing' reviews when watching the cruel punishment. However, there were also criticisms that it justifies private sanctions. On the 5th, Media Today asked Director Park Jin-pyo about his position on the relevant issues through a written interview.

When asked about the explicit scenes, Director Park said, "One of the biggest concerns I had while directing was that if I toned down the evil deeds of the criminals too much, wouldn't Bitna's punishment feel excessive?" "That's why I tried to adjust it in a way that would convince the viewers of Bitna's punishment while toning down the actual cruelty of reality."

Director Park stated, "I hope you understand that I tried to focus on the evil deeds of the criminal, not on displaying the pain of the victim."

Regarding the claim that he was justifying private sanctions, Director Park stated, "I am not trying to deny the rule of law or justify private sanctions at all," and "I was very careful in directing so as not to make it seem like I was justifying private sanctions."

He continued, "These days, the world wants private sanctions, so we wanted to show a reality that is more hellish than hell," and explained, "Rather than advocating private sanctions, the role of characters like Superintendent Han Do-on and Superintendent Kim So-young who fulfill their duties as police officers was more important in showing various perspectives and conflicts regarding crime and damage in this complex and difficult reality."

Director Park added, "I hope you see that the attempt to relieve the unresolved thirst of reality through the presence of a devil, not a human, is part of this effort."

Regarding the success of 'Judge', Director Park said, "I didn't expect it to be a success," and the reason was, "The main background and setting of 'Judge', the worldview of hell and the devil punishing sinners, and the fantasy, may be a bit unfamiliar to viewers, and on the other hand, I thought it needed some resistance."

Director Park cited the following part of the writer's planning intention as the decisive factor that led him to direct 'Judge':

"Before giving those who have given up on being human a chance to be educated, I hope that the victims and their bereaved families who were robbed of their remaining chance at life will be comforted first. (...) I hope that you will feel uncomfortable."

Director Park said, "I believed that 'Judge' could be completed only if I kept this planning intention until the end, and I stayed true to the basics by reading the script over and over again." He also mentioned, "I had to express the visuals of hell and the worldview of hell that no one had ever been to, so I put a lot of effort into VFX

(visual effects), special makeup, art, props, costumes, and makeup." Director Park then chose a line from Episode 13 of the drama. It's the line from Bitna's trial, before sentencing Jeong Tae-gyu to death: "In the end, what they truly want is condolences to the victims who lost their lives unjustly and consolation for the bereaved families who have lived lives that are like death. The law does not forgive the crimes that the victims and their bereaved families do not forgive." Director

Park said, "Bitna, the production staff, the writer, and the director, we have walked a difficult path to say this line," and "Despite that, they are still living and are trying to take one step at a time. I hope that 'Judge from Hell' can be a small comfort to someone like that."

[Desk Column] It is justice that a person who has committed a crime is punished
  • Approved 2024.11.05 21:40

In the final episode of the recently aired TV drama “Judge from Hell,” the words left by the main character, Judge Kang Bit-na (played by Park Shin-hye), from hell, suddenly come to mind. In response to the question of what justice is posed by children visiting the court in the drama, Judge Kang left a simple but strong message, “Justice is when those who commit crimes are punished.” The people would want a just society where those who commit crimes are punished, as Judge Kang said.

Recently, our society has been increasingly showing group behavior that does not accept the rulings of the judiciary. The biggest reason for this is probably that the legal profession in our country has lost the trust of the people due to many rulings that go against the public sentiment. The lenient rulings of the judiciary for conglomerate CEOs and big-time politicians have even led to the saying, “The innocent are guilty, the innocent are guilty.” In addition, the political world cannot be left out as one of the causes that is encouraging this phenomenon. It has become a daily routine for people to intimidate the judiciary when a ruling goes against their own political party or faction.

On the 15th and 25th, Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, is scheduled to be sentenced for 'violation of the Public Official Election Act' and 'false testimony instigation case', respectively. First, the court will sentence Lee Jae-myung, who is accused of publishing two false facts during the last presidential election, at 2:30 PM on the 15th in the first trial. The prosecution has demanded a sentence of two years in prison for Lee. If this case, which was indicted in September 2022, proceeds as scheduled, the first trial will be sentenced in two years and two months. Lee's election law trial was held a total of 27 times over two years. There is a mandatory provision that election law cases must be sentenced in the first trial within six months, but it has been delayed by over a year and a half. If a fine of 1 million won or more is confirmed in this case, Lee will lose his seat in the National Assembly and will be restricted from being elected for five years. He will not be able to run in the next presidential election. In this case, the Democratic Party must also return the 43.4 billion won it received as campaign expenses for the previous presidential election to the National Election Commission.

For the Democratic Party, this is both a crisis and an opportunity. If they overcome this crisis well, the presidential election train of Representative Lee and the Democratic Party will be on a smooth track. If the judicial risk becomes a reality, it will obviously be a fatal blow to the party, and the ruling party may lose control of politics. In this situation, the 'Myeong Tae-gyun incident' involving the presidential couple is a windfall for the Democratic Party. This is because the Democratic Party cannot miss this opportunity. The Democratic Party, which even went outside the National Assembly, held a 'National Rally to Denounce Kim Gun-hee' on the 2nd, and announced that it would process the Kim Gun-hee Special Prosecutor Act plenary session on the 14th, the day before the ruling. On the 9th, the two major labor unions and leftist groups will gather. Everyone knows that the extra-parliamentary struggle led by the Myeong Tae-gyun recording and the Kim Gun-hee special prosecutor is ultimately about 'bulletproofing Lee Jae-myung.' The Democratic Party has not only delayed the trial of Representative Lee for two years and “obstructed justice,” but has also paralyzed the government’s functions by impeaching State Council members, and has not hesitated to retaliate and intimidate judges and prosecutors by impeaching them. It is possible to guess that there is an underlying intention to shake up the judiciary.

In this way, November, when Representative Lee’s sentencing is scheduled one after another, is virtually like the calm before a storm. Regardless of the verdict, an extreme confrontation between the two camps seems inevitable. If a verdict is unfavorable to the Democratic Party, even more extreme intimidation of the judiciary and a runaway National Assembly are expected. They may even have to endure impeachment. The current administration and the People Power Party, which have lost the trust of the people, have no alternative to stop the Democratic Party’s runaway. They seem overwhelmed by their own worries, unable to escape the “Kim Kun-hee-Myeong Tae-gyun black hole.” The behavior of the two camps, who do not even consider the people, is deplorable. In the end, the damage will be borne by the people.

The People Power Party and the Democratic Party may have different intentions ahead of the sentencing, but both said they expect the judiciary to make a wise judgment. The standards for a wise judgment may be different, but this time, I hope everyone will humbly accept the results. Now, the judgment is up to the judiciary. No matter who the parties are, the political situation should not affect the judgment. They just need to make a fair and just judgment based on legal principles.
