rubie
February 21, 2017 (Yonhap Interview) 'Lucid Dream' actress Kang Hye-jung waits for second peak in career By Shim Sun-ah SEOUL, Feb. 21 (Yonhap) -- The "Old Boy" actress Kang Hye-jung returns to the big screen for the first time in about two years since "How To Steal A Dog" (2014). In the new Korean sci-fi crime thriller "Lucid Dream," Kang plays a medical doctor character who guides the viewers and other main characters of the film into the world of lucid dreaming, the story's main subject. "My husband Tablo returned home with a fairly flushed face the other night and said the film was more interesting than he expected. So I said 'Oh, that's great!'," she said during an interview with Yonhap News Agency on Tuesday. Actress Kang Hye-jung of "Lucid Dream" poses for the camera before an interview with media in this photo provided by Next Entertainment World on Feb. 21, 2017. (Yonhap) The film, set to be out on Wednesday, tells the story of Dae-ho, a broadcasting reporter and single father who visits his and others' lucid dreams to find clues to track down the kidnapper of his little boy, who was spirited away three years ago. For those unfamiliar with the meaning of the title, lucid dreaming is an elusive state in which you consciously know you are dreaming. Unlike a regular dream where there is no control over what you experience, a lucid dream offers you the possibility to control your surroundings. Kang's character is So-hyeon, Dae-ho's childhood friend and psychiatrist considered as the nation's top authority in the field of researching lucid dreaming. As some critics have pointed out, she appears to exist in the film only to provide information on what is lucid dreaming and what side effects it can bring. She does not hesitate as a doctor before deciding to accept Dae-ho's request to use the psychiatric methods for purposes other than treatment. "Actually there were scenes where So-hyeon tries to persuade Dae-ho to receive psychological counseling. The scenes might have been essential from her viewpoint, but I thought cutting them out was the right decision because they could have distracted viewers' attention from the film's main plot and Dae-ho's struggle to find his son," she said. The veteran actress added her standard for choosing films is their quality, not the size of her roles. Actress Kang Hye-jung of "Lucid Dream" poses for the camera before an interview with media in this photo provided by the Next Entertainment World on Feb. 21, 2017. (Yonhap) After rising to fame as Mido, the beautiful sushi waitress in Park Chan-wook's Cannes-winning "Old Boy" (2003), Kang starred in many television shows and films in her peak years. Three of her other well-known films were "Welcome to Dongmakgol," "Rules of Dating" and "Antartic Journal," all released in 2005. But she has rarely appeared on the screen since her marriage to Tablo, a Korean-Canadian rapper from the K-pop trio Epik High in 2009. The couple has a 7-year-old daughter who became Kang's other standard for choosing films. "I, these days, ponder whether the films I pick are good enough for her to see," she said, laughing. This image released by Next Entertainment World shows Kang Hye-jung in a scene from "Lucid Dream." (Yonhap) Questioned whether she felt anxious when the number of job offers was conspicuously reduced after nearly 10 years away from work, the 35-year-old working mother said "yes." "There were times when I felt like I lost everything and strived to do more. After all those years, I'm now becoming much more calm," she said. When asked what she wants to change the most if she can go back in time to her 20s, Kang said she doesn't want to if such a move brings any change to her current family situation. "Even if it may be the most regrettable choice in my life, I wouldn't change it. I'll choose to bear all the consequences from the decision alone because I can't imagine my life without my daughter." She called her daughter "the greatest achievement" in her and her husband's lives. However, her inactivity for the past decade does not mean she will no longer be a prolific actress, she emphasized. "Because life is long, I think I'll be able to get more chances to be on the screen if I makes myself ready... I, for instance, may do three TV shows at the same time to give more freedom to my husband from the burden of supporting the family." sshim@yna.co.kr

rubie
December 9, 2017 Kang Hye Jung Is Ready To Get Down To Work In New Stills For “Jugglers” Source: Soompi by Y. Chang KBS 2TV’s “Jugglers” has released stills of Kang Hye Jung working hard on a field, completely different from her character’s usual image. In “Jugglers,” Kang Hye Jung plays the role of Wang Jung Ae, a housewife who succeeds in getting a job as the secretary for the director of a sports industry (played by Lee Won Geun). She is a naive yet lovable woman who suffers from lack of money despite her seemingly glamorous lifestyle. The released pictures show Wang Jung Ae fully committing to fieldwork with no signs of her usual fashionable self. She is wearing purple sweatpants, rubber boots, and even arm warmers. The pink towel wrapped around her head highlights her determination. In one image, Wang Jung As is throwing up her hands in surprise while moving flowerpots, raising the question of what has made her so surprised. The scene was filmed at Pyogo Village in the city of Paju on November 27. Kang Hye Jung appeared on the set wearing a full costume fit for farming instead of her usual elegant clothes. The actress also studied where she should place the pots and how she should run in surprise before beginning to shoot the scene. While filming, Kang Hye Jung focused entirely on moving the pots that she almost seemed to have forgotten that the cameras were rolling. Only when the director signed “OK” did she stand up with a smile. The production staff of “Jugglers” shared, “Kang Hye Jung is the mood maker on set with her down-to-earth personality and bright laugh, but she immediately gets into character as soft, innocent Wang Jung Ae when the cameras start rolling. There is almost no need for retakes when filming Kang Hye Jung.” They added that the third episode of the drama will feature the struggle of Wang Jung Ae after she officially begins earning money on her own. “Jugglers” airs every Monday and Tuesday at 10:00 p.m. KST. rubie
January 28, 2018 [Lily's Take] Kang Hye-jung's Acting Is Inspired by Daughter Haru Source: Naver via HanCinema.net Kang Hye-jung is well-known for being married to husband Tablo and their daughter is Lee Haru. As Kang Hye-jung returned to the drama field with "Jugglers" as Wang Jeong-ae, she mentioned her beloved family in a recent interview. She shared the family's excitement on her appearance in the drama as she said, "Tablo and Haru said that they wish "Jugglers" was a daily-aired drama. They were a big fan of the drama and anxiously awaited for the days it aired, which were Mondays and Tuesdays. The two dropped by the filming set sometimes and everyone on set welcomed their visits. It was a fun time". When Haru visited the "Jugglers" set, it wasn't just to support her mom. It was a time where she understood where her mom came from and her twenty-year career. Also, watching the staff working hard helped Haru think about the effort put into the making of a drama. Kang Hye-jung commented, "When Haru visited the set, I think it became an opportunity to show Haru the many jobs and passion out there. She saw the cameramen, make-up artists, hair artists, assistants, etc. She got to have a first-hand experience in observing work that is hard to see". "Jugglers" was a meaningful drama for Kang Hye-jung. First of all, it was her returning work after a 5-year absence. When she came back to the drama field, she challenged herself to a character she's never played before. Unlike her previous roles, character Wang Jeong-ae gave Kang Hye-jung a refreshing acting challenge. She shared her feelings regarding her long-waited return saying, "I think it's good to be in a drama. That way, my kid can see it right away. Every week, there are new episodes, and there's a big reaction from her (laughs). I can show her that I'm actually working when I'm out and about. Movies take time to make and sometimes she can't even watch the movie due to the rating. Both dramas and movies are very charming works. I think having a consistent work would be a good idea. She didn't realize before when she was younger, but now that she's older, she finds it cool that her mom is on TV, working". By: Lily Lee
rubie
February 3, 2018 Kang Hye-jung is happy to be a character again : The actor saw a lot of herself in her role on the drama 'Jugglers' Source: INSIDE Korea JoongAng Daily [C-JES ENTERTAINMENT] After a five-year hiatus, Kang Hye-jung has returned to acting, the job that she says is the most attractive to her. Ever since she married rapper Tablo from hip-hop trio Epik High in 2009, she has become known as “Tablo’s wife” and later “Haru’s mother” after their daughter was born in 2010. But “actor” is her favorite title of them all. On the recently wrapped MBC drama “Jugglers” she played a very clumsy secretary named Wang Jeong-ae, who is totally unprepared for her job. She had never worked for a company because she had spent the previous 15 years living as a housewife. By perfectly portraying the character, she impressed viewers and the drama finished with a notable viewership rating of 9.1 percent. Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, sat down with the actor and discussed her return to entertainment. The following are edited excerpts from the interview. Actor Kang Hye-jung plays a secretary on the recently wrapped MBC drama “Jugglers.” [SCREEN CAPTURE] Q. What was it like to be back after a five-year hiatus? A. For the first time after completing a project, I did not want it to end. I was especially sad to be away from the people I worked with on set. I really enjoyed being with them. The six of us [lead actors] met a lot before we began shooting the series. We practiced the script together and occasionally had meals with each other as well. You returned to your acting career after five years away. In some ways, you are quite similar to your character Wang Jeong-ae. I was able to sympathize with the character very much as I am too a housewife supporting my husband and my child. Through doing this drama, how have you changed? I learned that [acting] is not something one can do alone, and that by being careful with others, and respecting the people you’re working with, the quality of the work can improve. I learned a lot from [actors] In Gyo-jin and Choi Dae-chul. They are really masters of acting. Did Tablo enjoy the show? Because the plot of the drama wasn’t too challenging, our family was able to enjoy it together. It was easy to show it to Haru as well. They said it is hard for them to wait until Monday [for the show to return] and that they wished that the drama aired everyday. Is this the first time that Haru was able to watch a show that her mother was in? Yes. When I have worked on movies, she wasn’t able to actually understand that her mother is an actor because there is a gap between when I go to work and when it is released. But because the drama comes out every week, she was able to understand pretty quickly what I am doing outside of the house. At first, she wasn’t able to understand the concept of acting. However, after she visited the studio once, she figured it all out. Why have you not tried any jobs outside of acting? I think it is because I’ve never tried anything else. I also think I can do other things well, but I have just never tried anything else. Still, being an actor is attractive, because it is kind of a job where many people walk the same path together and head toward the same goal, while putting forth their best effort. Every time I start a new piece, I become more addicted to this job. As an actor, how do you want to be remembered? I want to be remembered by the characters I have played, instead of who I am as a person. That’s why when I was much younger, I used to casually walk around Myeong-dong [in central Seoul] wearing a turban. The staff at a noodle restaurant that I went to would take my order in English because they thought I was a foreigner, and I answered in English too. (Laughs) Anyway, I hope that I am remembered by the characters I’ve played. BY LEE MI-HYUN [hong.youkyoung@joongang.co.kr]
rubie
July 11, 2019 Favorite films come to life in Lotte Annual Art Project Source: INSIDE Korea JoongAng Daily // CINE21 While organizers of the film industries are hosting various events to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Korean Cinema, Lotte Annual Art Project (LAAP) will also celebrate it with style. The project is in second year to host simultaneous exhibitions in Lotte galleries across the country under one unifying theme. Last year was fashion, and this year is films under the title of “Behind the Scenes.” Added atop with director Bong Joon-ho’s achievement of winning the Palme d’Or for “Parasite,” the project had singled out films as an important part of local popular culture. “Through this project, we wanted to provide the viewers [of the exhibitions] a space to talk about their most memorable scenes in films,” art director of the Lotte Gallery Kim Hyun-kyung said as she explained the motive behind the exhibitions at the press conference on Friday. “Usually when we watch films, we are only left with feelings or memories of the scenes. So we wanted the viewers to remanence and share with others the special moments or powerful emotions they’ve experienced while watching films through the artist’s works.” At the Jamsil branch, eastern Seoul, artworks of 100 contemporary artists are displayed in the area which reinterpret their favorite cinematic scenes across canvas. Moreover, the organizers asked film-related collectors such as Yang Hae-nam, Choi Kyu-sung and culture critic Choi Ji-woong to share their collections with the audience. Yang is an avid collector of film posters, currently in possession of 2,400 posters from 1989. Choi is a graphic designer of film posters, postcards, archive books, and more and will share his works with the audience. Lastly, culture critic Choi collects the LPs and albums of the films’ original soundtracks. Besides Jamsil branch, other exhibitions are being held across total of 10 branches- four in Seoul, and each one at Incheon, Daejeon, Ilsan, Daegu, Gwangju and Busan. In Incheon, under the sub title of “Wes Anderson: Nostalgia,” the organizers want the audience to indirectly experience the scenes in the director’s representative work “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014) by recreating the scent that Gustave wears, the L’Air de Panache cologne, through the local brand Sutome Apothecary. Inside the gallery, the audience can also taste a whip of Mendl’s cake that also acts as a scene-stealer in the film. Other exhibitions include “Summer Cinema: Rho Jae Oon Project in Avenuel” held at the main branch in Myeong-dong, “Hidden Pictures in Cinema” in Yeongdeungpo, and Ilsan branch’s “Bric_Behind the Scenes.” All the exhibitions will be held until July 28.
