Mizuki Nagumo was portrayed by Furukawa Kotone, Natsu's former college sweetheart and the mother of Umi. She broke up with Natsu when she decided to keep their baby and gave birth to their child without telling him he's a father. Her decisions would later on cause difficulties for both Umi and Natsu and people close to them, as they transition to be true father and daughter in every way.

Oftentimes blunt and will not tolerate nonsense, Ms Shinobu Otake was Akane Nagumo, mother to Mizuki and grandmother of Umi. She had Mizuki in her 40s after many years of trying and treatments. She had never expected she'd outlive her only child, and she is determined to follow through Mizuki's last wishes where Umi was concerned. Doing so, they will meet and get to know Natsu Tsukioka, the father of Umi, and the man their daughter loved.

The reliable Yayoi Momose, played by Arimura Kasumi, was the girlfriend of Natsu. Initially pushing to become the stepmother of Umi, she would then part ways from Natsu when she realised that she wouldn't be happy if she will have to live with him with his daughter. She would remain friends with Umi, and also with Natsu, after breaking up.

After 4mo of filming, they're almost real father and daughter. At the end of this scene, after "cut!", Meme was naturally stretching out his arms to carry her and she was going to him to be picked up.

Haa, let there be projects for Sena again with either Meme or Ms Shinobu or both. It was just as hard for the dad and the grandma to part ways from their little girl. 🥺

Meguro Ren is Natsu Tsukioka, the quiet central character of "Umi No Hajimari/The Beginning of the Sea". He finds out in a surreal way that he is a father when he attended the funeral of Mizuki Nagumo, his former college sweetheart. To claim Umi as his very own child in every sense, he had to go through difficult interactions, changes in his views, and shift and loses in his relationships with his current lover, his family, and the people and parents of Mizuki who were there for her and Umi the past 8 years.
