larus
DNA Lover: Episodes 11-12 by Dramaddictally This week is all about coming to terms with the truth. Now that the real DNA lover is revealed, all the other secrets, lies, and forgotten memories are coming to the fore. But what’s a girl to do when her hurtin’ heart wants something that’s just not in her DNA? EPISODES 11-12 Last week we ended with the big reveal: Kang-hoon is actually So-jin’s genetically perfect match. But that’s a problem now that she’s got her heart set on Yeon-woo. So, she ventures out to prove that the news isn’t true — and that she and Yeon-woo are as deeply connected as she’d like to believe. Our poor heroine doesn’t get far, though, before she realizes that all the “telepathic connections” she had with Yeon-woo could also apply to Kang-hoon. Whenever she put out the mental signals, Kang-hoon appeared, but she just kept tweaking her experiments until she got the result she wanted (which, as her colleague reminds her, is just bad science). Still, So-jin wants to give it one more shot. And so, she reruns the experiment where she and Yeon-woo are supposed to meet in the same place at the same time, without telling where they’re going. Like before, Yeon-woo pulls the trick where he has his colleague follow her. Only this time, So-jin catches on. And when she’s calls Yeon-woo to ask where he is, he blatantly lies — while she’s standing right behind him. So-jin is really upset to find out that Yeon-woo has been dishonest. Especially when he admits that he knew she had Kang-hoon’s DNA and not his. He says he wanted to do everything to make her happy, even if it included unintentional lies. And does it really matter that he lied since they like each other? Isn’t that the pertinent point? Well, not really. So-jin feels like he took advantage of her beliefs and tells him they need a timeout to think things through. Yeon-woo doesn’t want to break up. And at Kang-hoon’s nudging (because uri Kang-hoon always has So-jin’s best interest in mind!), Yeon-woo reaches out to So-jin first, and apologizes for hurting her. She understands that he didn’t have bad intent, but she allowed herself to get hurt by him because she believed they were fated. She needs time to accept the fact that they’re not. However, the tables turn when Yeon-woo is suddenly in mourning. There’s a lot of backstory about the troubled relationship between Yeon-woo’s parents, but the essential point here is that Yeon-woo’s dad dies in a fire — that it appears his mother purposefully set. She was in the fire too (evidently trying to die with her cheating husband) and is now laid up in a hospital bed unconscious. For plot purposes: So-jin feels really bad for Yeon-woo and tracks him down at the seaside, where he’s gone to mourn alone. Once So-jin gets a sick Yeon-woo into bed, he begins to tell her about his family. He knows that he has trouble loving anyone because of the way his mom obsessively held onto his dad, while Dad moved out of the house and had many extramarital affairs. “The deeper you love someone, the deeper you get hurt,” Yeon-woo says. This is why he’s too afraid to say he loves So-jin, but he does ask her to stay by his side. The two fall asleep holding hands, but when Yeon-woo wakes in the night, he runs away, leaving only a note for So-jin that says “Thank you. And I’m sorry.” Oof. Our beaten-down heroine tries to hold herself together, but finally loses it in a puddle of tears when Kang-hoon appears out of nowhere and finds her alone. He sees her, says “Let’s go eat,” and takes her hand — causing the first verifiable squee I’ve gotten from this show so far. Can we keep him?! To make way for Kang-hoon — and to prove his love, of course — Yeon-woo dives into a pool of Noble Idiocy head first. He meets with So-jin to officially break it off, returning the couples bracelet that she gifted him. He’s cold about it, saying she should give it to her real DNA lover (ouch), but we know that in his mind he’s doing this for her ultimate happiness. He can’t love her for life, so she should be with the one who can. And, not waiting around any longer, The One Who Can decides to get a head-to-toe makeover (thank you!) and ask So-jin out on a date. After her initial bafflement, they go ice skating, but So-jin is so sick with post-breakup heartache that everything reminds her of Yeon-woo. She thinks she may never be able to forget the good times and get over him — until later on, when she thinks that Kang-hoon is seriously injured in a fire. When So-jin hears a news story that a firefighter is in critical condition, she races to the hospital in a fit of panic. But when she arrives, Kang-hoon is there unharmed, which makes her sob. In a flash, she remembers that four years earlier, when her father died, Kang-hoon was the one that stayed by her side. She feels terrified of what might have happened to him, and then rushes in to grab him around the waist for a hug. Yeon-woo, seeing this, turns away. In voiceover, So-jin thinks about how Kang-hoon has always protected her. And when she pulls back from the hug, he wipes the tears from her face and brushes her hair to the side. (Gah! How are these two not endgame?) In that moment, she fully admits to herself that Kang-hoon is her DNA Lover, as our episodes close. more https://www.dramabeans.com/2024/09/dna-lover-episodes-11-12/

larus
DNA Lover: Episodes 13-14 by Dramaddictally The penultimate week is high on pining and low on plot. Well, unless you’re totally into the serial killer side story that makes no sense. The drama has officially gone off the rails — and that’s saying something for a show that started with the premise that our perfect partner is coded into our DNA. EPISODES 13-14 Can we use the term “jump the shark” for dramas? Or is that just standard filler fare when we’re pushing toward the final week? We get little in the way of development these episodes, even though there are at least three confessions. And the response to all three is: Can I have more time to think about it? Oof. That’s a “no” on all counts. Last week our heroine was coming to terms with the fact that her bestie is her real DNA lover. This week, she’s trying to force herself to see the pros of that fact. He’s always been there for her. He protects her at all times. And she knows she’s taken him for granted, even after all he’s done. And yet… her heart doesn’t care what her brain is telling her. She still wants Yeon-woo. Kang-hoon, though, is ready to fight for So-jin after standing back for so long. On one hand, he wants to respect her boundaries and wait for her to heal before offering a full-blown confession. But on the other, he’s willing to step between Yeon-woo and So-jin for the first time. And Yeon-woo is mostly moping around, totally changed, uninterested in any other woman, and regretting his breakup with So-jin. This is where Mi-eun sees her chance to step in and ask Yeon-woo if he wants to live together. It doesn’t have to be a serious thing between them, she says, just somebody to come home to. She wants to be by his side whenever he’s lonely. But Yeon-woo only says he’ll give it some thought. Our leading pair gets to interact when they go on a volunteer trip to the countryside to do some outdoor work. To escape a swarm of bees, they hold hands and run away, which leads to a bee sting and a piggyback ride to the hospital. The highlight of this moment is that Yeon-woo is in a white t-shirt with his sleeves rolled above his shoulders, showing that our firefighter is not the only one with biceps. While So-jin and Yeon-woo are tasked with dish duty later that night, he asks how it feels to meet her DNA lover. She’s tells him that she’s happy, but then walks away immediately, almost in tears, unable to be near him. Yeon-woo seems to believe her lie and leaves her alone. That is, until Mi-eun comes over to Yeon-woo’s place and starts asking about their “cohabitation contract.” She wants to go grocery shopping together, make meals, and stream movies — how’s twice a week sound? She’s laying down limits so he won’t feel obligated. But Yeon-woo turns her down because he can’t stop thinking about So-jin. Mi-eun says she understands how he feels because she only thought of Yeon-woo when she was with other men. At this, Yeon-woo looks shocked (he seems to have just realized she’s in love with him). And Mi-eun asks if it would have mattered if she confessed earlier. But Yeon-woo only looks down and doesn’t answer. Mi-eun is holding back tears and trying to be tough, but it’s clear she’s in pain. She tells him to go to So-jin and confess how he really feels, but if things don’t work out this time either, he should come to her. And so, Yeon-woo goes to see So-jin at her house and says he thinks he made a mistake. He wants to know if it’s too late. Can he have another chance? (What’s painful and ironic about this is that it’s basically what Mi-eun just said to him. And he turned her down because he doesn’t feel that way about her.) So-jin says they should go their separate ways. The old her would have accepted him, but not anymore. She has a new idea about what love is now. She used to think it was when your senses went wild for someone. But maybe what she has with Kang-hoon is real love. Just after she says it, Yeon-woo is about to object and Kang-hoon appears. He tells Yeon-woo to let So-jin go if he loves her. “That’s love too,” he says, pulling So-jin from the front gate and into the house, where he officially confesses. He tells her that he likes her — no, wait, strike that — he loves her. And he won’t make her cry like the other men did. She’s precious to him. “So, please come to me now.” So-jin looks surprised and moved (but maybe also sad?), and Kang-hoon leans in to kiss her. As he does, she backs up and knocks a plant off the table, which shatters on the ground and disrupts them before it happens. A few minutes later, when he’s scooting out the door, she asks if she can have more time to respond to what he said. Man, does he look discontent. “Give me the answer when I’m the only one in your heart,” he answers. And I feel for both of the unrequited loves we have going on. more https://www.dramabeans.com/2024/10/dna-lover-episodes-13-14/

larus
DNA Lover: Episodes 15-16 (Final) by Dramaddictally DNA Lover ends in much the same way it started, with flourishes and filler that stay true to its old school storytelling. After we get the full scoop on the arsonist’s motives, we’ve still got a heroine who needs to be rescued and a hero who’s determined to leave the country. But, as you can imagine, all our threads wrap up in a bow with lessons learned, love gained, and DNA theories chucked out the window. EPISODES 15-16 Okay, first, the priest’s arsonist twin is actually a brother, not a sister, as I stated last time. I guess that makes much more sense about why they’re identical, but for the story, it still doesn’t really matter. I get the impression the show was trying to say something about two people with the exact same DNA who turn out so totally different. But I don’t think it landed any major epiphanies. With that detail out of the way, let’s jump back in where we left off with So-jin kidnapped and taken to a greenhouse. This is the bad twin’s lair, where he keeps all those fire-starting flowers, and it’s not long before Yeon-woo is on his way to execute a rescue. But as soon as he locates So-jin, he gets knocked out and tied up along with her. And this is the moment where the baddie reveals his full motives to his (literal) captive audience. We learn that the twins were raised by their mom, but Yeon-woo’s philandering father entered their lives at some point when they were adolescents. He claimed he was going to divorce his wife and be with them as a family, but he never did. One day, a young Yeon-woo shows up and reveals to the bad twin that his mother’s boyfriend is actually married to someone else. The bad twin pushes his mom to the ground for being involved in an affair and accidentally starts a fire, which his mom dies in. Since then, he’s been out to get Yeon-woo’s dad (who abandoned them after their mother died) and Yeon-woo for “causing” his mom’s death. He succeeded in murdering the dad (and the dad’s latest girlfriend) — which lets Yeon-woo know that his own mother is innocent. She was at the fire to save her husband, not kill him. While they’re tied up together, Yeon-woo apologizes to So-jin for lying and pretending to be her DNA lover. He came there to save her because he cares about her, not because they’re fated. This information makes her cry. And before long there are fires all around them and they’re about to die. Of course they escape, but in the process of saving So-jin, Yeon-woo injures his hand, which is bad pretty news for a surgeon. At the same time, Kang-hoon arrives to help them get out alive and the bad twin ends up perishing in his own fire. Yeon-woo and So-jin are rushed to the hospital, where Yeon-woo undergoes emergency surgery. But even after all his other ailments heal, his right hand will never be the same again. At the hospital, So-jin asks Yeon-woo not to leave for the U.S., especially if he’s going on her account. She says she thought she was the only one that ever got hurt in relationships, but she thinks that, this time, she hurt him. She came into his life with her experiments, and she doesn’t want him to be uncomfortable anymore. But Yeon-woo says he’s going anyway so he and his mom can have a new start. Before they go, Yeon-woo’s mom wakes from her coma and tells him that it wasn’t love that kept her down her whole life, it was resentment. And so, it’s implied that he can stop being afraid of love now. She apologizes for being an absent mom and all is resolved between them. On the day they’re scheduled to leave, So-jin races to the airport to try to catch Yeon-woo before he gets on the plane (at Mi-eun’s suggestion), but she’s just a second too late. Forced separation is upon us, and our heroine sobs it out in the terminal with no idea when they’ll meet again. Since Kang-hoon and Mi-eun both want the people they love to be happy, they decide to let them go. Which leads to them hanging out together, going to movies and having meals, and I fully support this change of events. Maybe it’s supposed to be a consolation prize for the story, but these two are my favorite characters, and so, yeah, I think they deserve each other. And while everything wraps up nicely for So-jin with her mom and sister (no hard feelings, I guess), she has a total change of philosophy on finding love. She decides that she’ll forget about DNA and fate and follow her heart instead. She thought Yeon-woo ran away from her, but she sees now that she ran away first because they weren’t written in each other’s DNA. She was scared of getting hurt again and she didn’t believe his feeling for her. But now, she’s ready to take the risk and face getting hurt. If Yeon-woo returns and doesn’t love her anymore, she’ll cry and suffer, and then get over it. more https://dramabeans.com/2024/10/dna-lover-episodes-15-16-final/
