‘Harbin’ Takes TIFF by Storm as Hyun Bin and Lee Dong Wook Discuss Their Roles

The 49th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is buzzing with excitement after the world premiere of Harbin on September 8th. The film, officially invited to the Gala Presentation section, received an overwhelmingly positive response.

On the 9th, stars Hyun Bin and Lee Dong Wook joined a packed crowd for an “In Conversation With” event, followed by a lively Q&A session that left audiences wanting more.

Hyun Bin expressed his confidence in the film, stating, “‘Harbin’ is a movie you have to watch in theaters.” He opened up about the pressure of portraying the legendary independence activist Ahn Jung Geun but explained, “As an actor, the chance to play such a great figure doesn’t come often, so I accepted the role.” He added, “This isn’t just the story of Ahn Jung Geun; it’s the story of all the people and independence fighters who rooted themselves in this land,” building anticipation for the film.

Lee Dong Wook shared his motivation for joining the project, saying, “I wanted to be a part of this film, even if it was just in a small role because it tells the story of Ahn Jung Geun.” He also teased, “I prepared for the movie with the intention of showing a completely different side of myself,” sparking curiosity among fans.

Director Woo Min Ho emphasized the importance of telling this story, comparing it to how Western cinema frequently revisits Nazi-related themes. “Just as films about Nazi Germany continue to be made, we, too, need to address the Japanese occupation period. There’s a saying, ‘A nation that forgets its history has no future,’ and that’s something I kept in mind while shooting ‘Harbin.'”

Reflecting on the challenging production process, Hyun Bin expressed his gratitude for his co-stars, saying, “Although they’re not here today, without my comrades Park Jung Min, Jo Woo Jin, Jeon Yeo Been, Park Hoon, and Yoo Jae Myung, I wouldn’t have made it through the tough shoot.” Lee Dong Wook echoed the sentiment, noting, “Working on ‘Harbin’ gave me more time to think about the sacrifices made by independence fighters for our country.”

The Q&A session, with a range of questions from the audience, ended with enthusiastic applause from the fans.

*** Gong Yoo and Lee Dong Wook has always been showing off their bromance when they're together and seeing the onscreen and offscreen collaboration of Hyunbin with Lee Dong Wook especially when the two attended the "Harbin" movie premiere at the Toronto (TIFF) just doesn't hit the same - hahaha - I do hope the movie is good and helps finish up the Korean box office strong this year when it premieres during the Christmas holiday season.

*** On September 10, Harbin premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, which was attended by Hyun Bin, Lee Dong Wook and the rest of the cast and crew. Jeon Yeo Been could not attend the event. At the premiere, the two actors interacted with the audience and also answered the interviewer's questions. But one remark by Lee Dong Wook and Hyun Bin's reaction to it left the audience in splits. During a question-answer session, Lee Dong Wook humbly replied, "I am not a superstar. But I want to be one". The interviewer enthusiastically disagreed with him and said that the audience had to say otherwise. The fans  cheered for him. But hilariously Hyun Bin remarked, "I am a superstar", which earned a laugh from everyone present.

5 K-Dramas With Genius Cinematography And Visuals For Cinema Fanatics

The K-drama industry as a whole places a strong emphasis on visuals; however, not every production successfully achieves this. While vibrant colors and high saturation can make a drama look lively, some productions choose a more nuanced approach, ensuring that the story on the page and the story on the screen align more coherently. For those who appreciate great cinematography, here are five K-dramas with exceptional visuals to analyze.

“Strangers From Hell”

Strangers-from-hell.jpeg

Directed by the same director behind “A Killer Paradox,” “Strangers From Hell” is a mind-bending horror thriller based on a webtoon. “Strangers From Hell” tells the story of Yoon Jong Woo, a young man in his twenties who moves from the countryside to Seoul after his friend offers him a job at a small company. With limited funds, Jong Woo chooses to stay at a communal residence called “Eden,” an affordable place where he must share space with several mysterious individuals, all of whom seem to share a secret.

When the term “cinematography” is mentioned, many people immediately assume the media being discussed is aesthetically pleasing. However, that’s not always the case, and “Strangers From Hell” is a prime example. What makes this K-drama iconic is not only the superb acting of Im Siwan, Lee Dong Wook, and the supporting cast, but also the set itself, which acts as a character. It evokes the same feelings of suffocation in the viewers that Jong Woo experiences.

Without giving away any spoilers, it can be said that this drama masterfully uses camera work to instill anxiety, while the ingenious screenwriting makes you question every character — and sometimes even yourself.
