[5-minute interview] 'Judge' Kim Jae-young "Looking forward to season 2, what if Han Da-on turns into a devil"

[Celeb Media Reporter Shin A-ram]

Actor Kim Jae-young expressed his anticipation for season 2 of 'Judge from Hell'.

Kim Jae-young met with Celeb Media at a cafe in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on the 6th and had an interview about the end of the SBS Friday-Saturday drama 'Judge from Hell'.

'Judge from Hell' (written by Jo Yi-soo/directed by Park Jin-pyo and Jo Eun-ji), which ended on the 2nd, is a cider action fantasy drama where the devil Kang Bit-na (Park Shin-hye) enters the body of a judge and meets the humane, passionate detective Han Da-on (Kim Jae-young) in a hellish reality, punishing criminals and being reborn as a true judge.

The final episode recorded 11.9% nationwide, 11.3% in the metropolitan area, and a peak viewership rating of 14.7% (according to Nielsen Korea), ending on a high note by taking first place across all channels in the same time slot.

In the drama, Kim Jae-young plays the role of detective Han Da-on of the Violent Crimes Unit 2 of Nobong Police Station and gives a passionate performance. Thanks to the popularity of Season 1, viewers are starting to expect Season 2.

On this day, Kim Jae-young said, "First of all, the ratings were good because many viewers watched it. It was a drama that I was very satisfied with. It's been about two months since it ended, but I'm a bit sad because I've grown attached to it, and I don't know if they'll film a season 2,but I think it would be great if they did. It was a drama that made me happy." He continued, "When we were reading the script in the beginning, they said that if it goes well, we'll do a season 2, so I'm looking forward to it. They'll do a similar subject matter, but I thought about how my character will turn out, and it wasn't clear. I'm curious,

and I think it would be great if it did." He added, "Even if it's an open ending, didn't Han Da-on and Kang Bit-na end up falling in love? I thought that Han Da-on might not appear if things go this way," and laughed, saying, "If Han Da-on turns into a demon, wouldn't it be possible to naturally go to a season 2? When we did action scenes, Han Da-on would just faint and fly away, so I was sad, but I was also worried, 'Will this turn out well?'"

'Judge of Hell' Kim Jae-young "For the first time in my life, I fainted while filming an action scene... I smashed my face into the cement floor" [SS Interview ①]

[Sports Seoul | Reporter Won Seong-yoon] “For the first time in my life, I fainted while filming an action scene. I was kidnapped by a demon and strangled. I lost consciousness and was face down on the cement floor. I woke up to the sound of people talking.”

It almost happened. It happened during the filming of SBS’s “Judge from Hell” (hereafter “Judge from Hell”). Kim Jae-young, who plays detective Han Da-on, recalled the experience during an interview held at a cafe in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on the 6th, saying, “It was so hot and humid in the summer at the time that it was difficult. I took immediate action and went to the emergency room. The doctor said that if I had been strangled for a few more seconds, it would have been dangerous.” He continued, “I was worried that something might go wrong because I had to get an MRI.”

Director Park Jin-pyo was surprised to see the monitor and ran over. He sighed when he saw Kim Jae-young’s injured face. Since the lead actor had an injury on his face, filming was difficult right away. The drama also decided to take a week off. From January to September, the pre-produced “Judge from Hell” filming set was filled with such excitement.

He did quite a bit of action in the movie 'Golden Slumber' (2018) and the drama '100 Days My Prince' (2018), but his roles were mostly about hitting. Kim Jae-young said, "I learned that I can't help but lose to the devil because I'm human. It's so hard to get hit," and laughed, saying, "Just like in the drama, time and space change quickly, when I lost consciousness and woke up, I thought I fell out of bed while sleeping." He

also recalled what Ma Dong-seok said while filming the movie 'Two Men' (2016).

"Jae-young, I kept filming a scene where I fell from the second floor, and all my joints were out. You have to protect yourself. Since then, it's not easy for me to run."

As he gained these experiences, he changed his mindset to filming action scenes safely. He also developed the habit of checking to see if there were any dangerous objects, such as nails or glass, around him. Fortunately, thanks to his colleagues, he didn't get trauma. When filming an action scene, he relieved the tension with laughter, saying, “Jae-young isn’t fainting.”

On the other hand, the action thrill of the lover, the devil Justitia (played by Park Shin-hye), was amazing. She beat, kicked, and tormented those who committed sins and did not reflect on them with her feet. She mirrored the pain the victims suffered and returned it to the perpetrators. She provided vicarious satisfaction with the scenes where the sinners asked for forgiveness.

Kim Jae-young said, “(Park) Shin-hye acted as if she was playing a prank on people because she was a devil, rather than being scary and cruel because she was a devil.” He continued, “Later, she laughed so hard that I wondered if she originally liked that kind of acting. When I asked her later, she said she enjoyed acting like this because she always cried.”

“I think it’s great that (Park) Shin-hye took on a one-top drama. She had no emotional ups and downs from beginning to end. She was definitely good at controlling her emotions and skills. She was a strong actress who led the scene. I learned and felt a lot.”

The Judge From Hell, starring Park Shin-hye and Kim Jae-young in the lead roles, ended with the highest ratings for a finale episode. The ending is what has left people curious and excited at the same time. Did Park Shin-hye and Kim Jae-young get their happy ending? Was the story a replay of the moment Jae-young's Han Da-on met Shin-hye's Justitia? Here, we explain the ending of the series and also explore if there is a possibility of a new season...

A replay of Justitia's life as Judge Kang Bitna

Back when Justitia had just turned Judge Kang Bitna and fought her first case, she met a few school kids who were out on a trip to the Seoul High Court. It is at that moment that Han Da-on wondered who Judge Kang really was. He would chase her around trying to figure out the judge who took on cases, passed lame judgments, and then the accused in her cases ended up dead with a symbol engraved on their head. It is really at that moment where Justitia and Da-on's love story begins. Thus, the moment was replayed. 2 years after living in the human form, Justitia met the children again. This time, too, they refused to accept that she's a judge, but Justitia is indeed The Judge From Hell. She holds immense power being the sole heir to Bael (Shin Sung-rok) and yet, being forgiven for her sins by Gabriel and God himself. Thus, Justitia, in a way, has control of the God of Hell aka Lucifer (God's son who was an angel but turned a devil) as well.

Did Park Shin-hye's Justitia and Kim Jae-young's Han Da-on find their happy ending?

Not in the conventional sense, as of yet, but yes, Justitia and Han Da-on are happy at the moment. And honestly, that is more beautiful. The wedding photo shared with the cast was a BTS still from the moment Satan pushed Justitia into the dream world. She dreamed of marrying Han Da-on at the altar and they even shared a kiss. That is the only time they found their happily ever after. In real life, Justitia has only a year left to figure out life between Hell and Earth. While Bael has warned her to come back to Hell, Justitia obviously has different plans which involve her staying on Earth alongside her lover.

Will we get a new season of The Judge From Hell?

From the looks of it, yes, we will very much so get a new season of The Judge From Hell. Justitia's story and ultimately Han Da-on's story with her is left unexplored. What will Justitia do in the one year she has been granted? Can she change what she is eventually destined for (hell)? Will we have a wedding? The makers have surely left season 1 on a cliffhanger and so, do not be surprised if we get a season 2 soon.

Kim Jae Young shared about his close friendship with Byeon Woo Seok and Joo Woo Jae in a recent interview following the conclusion of SBS’s Friday-Saturday drama The Judge from Hell. He revealed, “My close friends joked that I’ve become a star.”

Kim said, “Even though Joo Woo Jae and Byeon Woo Seok are incredibly busy, they still text me saying, ‘Your show is amazing,’ ‘You look great,’ and ‘The show’s fantastic.’ We always support each other whenever we have a new project.” He added, “Many of my other friends also reached out, which felt really good.”

Kim went on to express his excitement over the show’s strong viewership, saying, “I’m happy with the ratings for this drama.
