It's going to be a bloody season now. October is the month of all spooky things  - while it's been popular especially in the US, it can be traced back to various cultures from around the world.

What is the connection between vampires and Halloween? Well, dressing up as vampires has been a good costume choice for most Halloween parties. This is due to the fact they symbolize horror and fear, have gothic aesthetics with their mysterious aura, and something that has been popular in literature and film.

This is why we want to know your favourite vampires, grim reapers and zombies.

I don`t watch movies or kdramas with vampires, zombies at all. I don`t find them interesting. But I watched some kdramas with supernatural creatures. I hope I watch some to answer in the poll . :D

In the vampire section... I tried watching The Scholar Who Walks The Night but I dropped it. The others... I don`t know anything about them. Sorry. None is the answer.

Grim Reaper.... I voted for the dramas I watched. Goblin, Arang and 49 Days. Probably I would have liked both grim reapers in Tomorrow but I did not watch the drama.

Zombie section.... None. Sorry I did not watch anything. I am interested in Kingdom as I heard that the plot doesn`t focus on the zombies but I have not had the chance yet.

I just found out from the poll that i generally prefer grim reaper than vampire/zombie dramas lol. Anyway, the fact that I voted for lee soo hyuk twice on different categories means he's certified inhumanly gorgeous in my book which makes me wonder how's he not getting any lead role yet at this point.

@agenth Thanks for the invite

I don't really watch the vampire series in kdrama often, I watch mostly the zombies drama/movies. See below list - am I crazy, I did not know I watch almost all of them, except one. :astonished:

  • All of Us Are Dead
  • Kingdom 1, 2, 3? and Ashin of the North
  • Happiness
  • Zombie Detective
  • Sweet Home
  • Train To Busan
  • The Wailing
  • The Odd Family: Zombie on Sale (except this one, I didn't watch)
  • Peninsula
  • ALIVE

If i rank them in sequential :

For movie - I will put "The Wailing" as Top 1 for the most scary movie.

For zombie drama, I will put Kingdom series as top.

The most lousy zombie movie is Peninsula - pls do not waste time to watch it.

Nice to see you again.

WOW, you watched a lot. You really like this genre. No zombies or vampires for me. Maybe dramas with Grim Reapers are not really horror dramas that`s why I can watch them. It is not the horror element that I don`t like, it is the chase for victims and I find it useless. I want a plot.

I will give Kingdom a try. I read good reviews about it.

*** I like vampire stories especially those with a romantic element. Vampires will never go out of style. While some K-dramas with vampire storylines lack originality, for me there are highly acclaimed ones that stand out, such as :  :Ohboy3:

Lee Jun Ki in Scholar who Walks the Night – this is critically acclaimed, having 4 awards to its name.

Taecyeon in Heartbeat - though the series could have been a dark one, instead, their story plays like a romantic comedy, making it a lighter vampire story.

Yeon Jung Hoon in Vampire Prosecutor – this is a must-watch vampire K-drama. It's one of the few K-dramas with a second season and it had solid ratings throughout its run.

I noticed that Grim Reapers are not as common in American television. K-dramas feature unique grim reaper characters that are often kind-hearted despite their dark and spooky responsibilities. Grim reapers are linked to death, it's no surprise that some K-dramas with grim reapers are sad. In Korea usually, this character is shown in black suits and a black hat symbolizing death, it is often portrayed as a handsome figure with a perfect body.  These are my best grim reaper characters in K-dramas :  :kisslevel:

Lee Dong Wook in Goblin – this drama showcases a memorable grim reaper character to the forefront, even if he’s a supporting character. He’s a grim reaper character who’s irresistible romantically. Unarguably, Lee Dong Wook is the most famous grim reaper in a Korean drama that viewers have etched in their minds. He is funny and lovable in the drama. He has a funny side when he is with Kim Hyeong (Gong Yoo). No eyes can get off him in his black attire with that handsome face. The color black looks so good on him that while watching the drama I  sometimes even wonder, when my time comes, would I meet someone as COOL as him? - hehehe  :Megalol:

Jung Il Woo in 49 Days – he’s a Scheduler who’s a part of a larger mystery that will keep any audience member entertained in the drama. I loved this drama but, it’s a very, very sad series. The role played by Jung Il Woo in the series is quite unique.

Song Seung Hun in Black - this is a grim reaper story that is dark, though it still has hints of romance throughout. Song Seung Hun as the grim reaper was also eye pleasing.

You can’t have Halloween monsters without zombies. They may be slow, but they’re hard to stop. Aside from Japan, some of the best horror series/movies come from South Korea. The zombie genre as a whole hasn't lost popularity as the years have gone on.  These are the best Zombie dramas for me :  :ohboy2:

Spoiler

Happiness – I loved this drama because it doesn't focus too much on the horror aspect. But, Happiness shifted its setting to something closer to home because the story happens after the corona virus pandemic, when infectious diseases are the new norm. In a way, it makes the story more realistic as if this can really happen.

Kingdom – the series has received positive reviews and has been especially praised for effortlessly blending elements of period drama and horror.

Zombie Detective – this series manages to be amusing for using comedy here. Hence, it gives us a lighthearted tone. The drama is endearing. The character is a departure from the ones that feature in usual zombie series.

Train to Busan – this flick has received so much attention that the USA has decided to do a remake. In addition, Train to Busan has also garnered many awards.

I did hear rumors that Lee Soo Hyuk oppa is slated for a lead role - FINALLY! He is listed as lead in S Line:

@partyon - Yes, "The Wailing", I had a nightmare after watching it. I guess that's the reason the film received the award for the year - "Baeksang Arts Award for Best Film 2017."

Yes, my dear, you must quickly catch up the "Strong Girl Nam Soon" it's so entertaining....:joy:

@larus - Yes, I am crazy over those intense thriller and suspense movie or drama. Kingdom series are rare gem, not just because of the bloody zombies, it's more on the storyline : One of the series mentioned their strategic plan is to shut down and contain those zombie swarms using various tactics. How they learnt to fight against the zombies since they are walking dead who can only survive at night.  Understanding the enemy's weaknesses is important to any strategic plan.

Zombies are created due to the capitalist greed of the rich and power. Simply put, it was moral corruption that caused the kingdom to be in such chaos and creating political turmoil within a rich historical context..

If I put in an analogy, the politicians (bad guys) often use "weapons" to kill and control people (in Joseon era - ancient times, they used walking dead to breed and spread horribly), similarly, in the current context, many politicians use "nuclear weapons" to control people or use "powerful viruses" to harm people.

Kingdom Season 3, probably still a long way to wait.....I feel that somehow lack of momentum after watching S2...But still, I would strongly encourage you to watch it if you have time.

If you like suspense thriller, you can watch the below 3 good kdrama: :D

  1. The Deal
  2. Kidnapping day
  3. Evillive
  4. Escape of Seven - too exaggerating and bloody. Can do without. Is this the same script writer as the penthouse one?
