Popular Post agenth
We have all seen the amazing food spread on the dinner tables of every Kdrama family, be it royal or the most common one. They have all thing in common: all the food looks amazing, even if it's meals shared in a tense royal setting or with the most knit-tight family ever. This event is brought to you to share our love of food together. So come here and let's each bring a tasty dish to the dinner table! Let me introduce you to the popular staples of food introduced in drama: Ramyun Spoiler Of course the first food is Ramen, or as Koreans call it: Ramyun. This particular food is mostly instant food made from a package that people like to eat at all times, even as midnight snack. It's so popular it has become it's own pick-up line... you have seen it in dramas and movies, the ML and FL want to get closer together, maybe even in the home of their prospective romantic partner? They have a secret code: "Do you want to have a cup of ramen with me?" - this is equivalent to netflix and chill, or just asking to have someone stay over! Samgyupsal Spoiler All over the world the phenomenon of "Korean BBQ" has spread. Usually it means a big food thing where people come together and prepare the meat with side dishes. One of the highlights is to prepare the meat yourself right at the table in front of you (gas-camp cookers). Samgyupsal means "three layered meat", meaning the layer of meat in between the "fat". Seaweed Soup Spoiler This soup is traditionally served for special occasions, especially for birthdays. It signifies that you respect the one who cooked it (your mother). The soup is very simple without much garnish which is why it can be eaten by people of all positions in society. Therefore seaweed soup also has a place on the table on days other than birthdays... Kimchi Spoiler Kimchi is probably the most famous food here. It goes with ANYTHING. with rice, with noodles, with soups. That's why it's there, always. The process to make kimchi can be quite elaborate that's why people swear by their mother's recipe. So here you have it: Kimchi is awesome, if it's used to eat, or even as a slap for dramatic effect. Kimchi Jjigae Spoiler Using old kimchi (as in fermented and then not "as fresh") for your soup, the famous Kimchi jjigae is here. It's a stew that is also filled with either meat or seafood. Jjajangmyeon Spoiler Not quite Korean food, but nevertheless food that is popular with Koreans, usually as delivery service to eat it anywhere (when you're too lazy to cook). The noodles are served with black bean sauce and meat and also the yellow radish. Tteokbokki Spoiler A street food classic, popular with young and old. Beware: it's spicy but so very good. Rice cakes and fish cakes in a spicy sauce, sometimes also with ramyun noodles and egg. Also popular to have in alcohol tents! Fish Cakes Spoiler Another popular street food is fish cake on its own (which can be also used for above dish, Tteokbokki, or in a soup). The fish cakes were broiled in a broth soup and then put on a stick for people to eat as a snack in between. Have you tried it like Gu Jun Pyo? Korean Fried Chicken Spoiler There are hundreds of chicken shops in Seoul. Fried chicken is popular especially with the younger crowd. Instead of burger or pizza, you may pick up a box of fried chicken and pair it with beer and enjoy it. Bibimbap Spoiler Bibimbap literally means "mixed rice". It's a dish where a bowl is served of rice and on top of it various vegetables (or also with meat). Since there are many variations, this dish is one of the most popular ones (and also possibly one of the safest picks for vegetarians). you have all the beautiful colors you can mix together (vegetables) as well as the spicy sauce (usually Gochujang). Kimbap (& Triangle Kimbap) Spoiler These babies may look like makis, but let me assure you, they are not. Korean kimbap has a different taste to maki, as the rice for the roll is prepared differently. Whereas maki rice is more sour, the rice here is reminiscent of the sesame oil that gives kimbap it's fragrant flavour. You can make many variations and pick the ingredients: all sorts of vegetables, from fresh to pickled! the triangle kimbap is larger than one kimbap slice, as it's supposed to be a quick easy snack on the go. You can buy these also at the supermarket, which is why it's so popular with uni students. Iced Americano Spoiler Bonus feature of this drink as @partyon wanted it. What is the fuss about iced americano for Koreans? It#s a straightforward drink: just coffee, no extra calories. Something that is not only popular during summer, but all year around! Have you seen above food before, or even tasted it? Or what other food has impressed you from dramas? Which dramas have served the best food? Please feel free to also share your favourite foods - how long has it been since you tasted it, or cooked it? This event has been suggested by @lilyphenix and @CarolynH. Depends on how it's cooked, but I remember it to be tasty. Not a top choice for food though, cos there's little flesh to chew. Pretty mooncakes are almost always shown in costume Cdramas. ctto Too pretty to eat! 7 10

frozentundra
I don't have a good picture, but I learned to make my own japchae after watching Hong Soo's mom in While You Were Sleeping make it. Delicious stuff! I can never, EVER eat or make kimbap without thinking of the ahjumma in Healer. And Subway!! Who could forget Subway! I actually have one on the corner near my house. But I must admit--never once does it make me hungry. Instead, every time I see that logo, I want to immediately go home and WATCH DRAMA. 12 1

lilyphenix
@Sleepy Owl @confusedheart @agenth @partyon Thank you so much for this delicious event and thread! Tasting food is an interesting way to appreciate a culture! I always get curious about the food when I see spreads like the one below, in Korean dramas: everything looks so good, but also intriguing, since there are many foods I don't recognize. I'm lucky to have a Korean grocery store in my town, but also Korean friends who sometimes gift me with homemade kimchi. My town also has a few Korean restaurants, some specializing in Ramyun, but my favorite one being the Korean BBQ. I tried to make Korean pancakes and Jjajangmyeon in the past. I created a big mess in my kitchen, lol! Some of my favorite Korean food? In no particular order: - Korean pancakes Spoiler - Korean BBQ (especially the lettuce wrap! Yum! It's light and healthy!) - The various ways to eat an egg! Spoiler - Any Mixed Bowl Dishes (Bibimbap being one of them) Spoiler Some dramas i enjoyed where food was the star: Wok of Love (jjajangmyeon), Kim Sam Soon (2005), Link: Eat, Love, Die (though a bit intense on the suspense/thriller side!), Nevertheless (the story is about moody young love, but nevertheless the 2nd lead is a chef!), My Dangerous Wife (the husband is a chef)... I love cooking too (a lot). My specialties are French and African foods (learned from chefs and in school, in Europe), but friends also taught me Chinese and Indian food, Japanese curry dishes; I taught myself how to make some Thai dishes... Looking forward to chingus' favorite foods! PS: Have we mentioned porridge yet? Or the hangover soup Haejang-guk? And thanks, mods, for adding spoiler tags in my pictures. Had forgotten the 5 pix rules! 3 3 1 1 3

If I don't have any, I don't use the spices in the generic one, but cook my ramen in homemade broth (quick to do yourself). It's also less salt content that way... Also, pickled veggies!! 1 5
