larus
Amping up for the Kokdu: Season of Deity premiere by missvictrix With The Forbidden Marriage happily-ever-aftered, MBC is now making sure you don’t forget that Kokdu: Season of Deity premieres this weekend! Starring Kim Jung-hyun (Mr. Queen) and Im Soo-hyang (Doctor Lawyer), the fantasy romance has released another whet-your-appetite teaser. If the earlier teasers with the reluctantly obedient grim reaper Kokdu (Kim Jung-hyun) didn’t give you enough of the hijinks to come, this new teaser surely does. And oh, it feels like it’s been a while since there was a drama with this much weirdness. I can’t wait. Kokdu must return to Earth every 99 years to punish the wicked, and it’s that time again. We meet him as he takes the form of a doctor, whose colleague is none other than our heroine Han Gye-jeol (Im Soo-hyang). Coincidentally — but also completely driven by deep dramaland fate — the two share a mysterious connection. And though the recents teasers and stills promise romantic cherry blossom moments, the whole drama seems ready to interrupt itself with undercutting humor. I know it’s early to say this, but I think I’m going to like Kim Jung-hyun and Im Soo-hyang together here – it feels like they’ll be able to match each other’s energy quite well. Granted, I prefer Kim Jung-hyun in serious roles (he was stunningly good in Time), but he seems to be leaning into more comedic roles lately, and I can’t blame him, because he’s good at that too. Im Soo-hyang, on the other hand, I think I prefer in lighter dramas, so it will be fun to see her here, reacting to the supernatural that Kokdu seems to bring with him to Earth. Also starring are Ahn Woo-yeon (Young Lady and Gentleman) as Gye-jeol’s brother, and Dasom (Dramaworld) as Gye-jeol’s haughty co-worker. In addition to the new teaser, new stills, and a character chart, the two stars also gave Lunar New Year greetings — and a peek into their moody promotional photo shoot here. Directed by Baek Soo-chan (Alice) and Kim Ji-hoon (Please Check Out The Event), Kokdu: Season of Deity premieres this Friday on January 27. https://www.dramabeans.com/2023/01/amping-up-for-the-kokdu-season-of-deity-premiere/
backstreetboysfan
Kim Jung Hyun And Im Soo Hyang Rave About The Message Of “Kokdu: Season Of Deity,” Their Characters’ Charms, And More The lead stars of “Kokdu: Season of Deity” have spoken about the drama in Singles magazine! MBC’s “Kokdu: Season of Deity” is a new fantasy romance which tells the story of a grim reaper named Kokdu (Kim Jung Hyun) who comes down to this world to punish humans every 99 years. When Kokdu meets Han Gye Jeol (Im Soo Hyang), a doctor with mysterious abilities, he starts working as a visiting doctor. Given the fantasy aspect of this drama, the interviewer mentioned that imagining the story was difficult, but that this made them more curious. Im Soo Hyang teased, “What’s important is that we’re having so much fun while filming. The character of Gye Jeol, who I play, is so cute and lovely so it’s very enjoyable.” Kim Jung Hyun commented, “The script is interesting and there’s a massive amount of lines. That’s why I thought my chemistry with the opposite actor was more important than anything. While acting, I could feel the exchange of energy between me and Soo Hyang so it was fun.” Spoiler As “Kokdu: Season of Deity” deals with the heavy topic of death, the drama was assumed to have a dark vibe. However, Im Soo Hyang said reassuringly, “It’s completely different. Instead, all the characters appear like they’re missing a screw so it’s even funny. As kids these days say, it feels like a ‘scramble of nonsense and word vomit.’ Of course joys and sorrows will be portrayed within that, but we tried to express even heavy topics in a lighthearted way.” On why he chose “Kokdu: Season of Deity” as his first drama in two years, Kim Jung Hyun shared, “Kokdu is a character who is death itself. A transcendent being who connects the underworld and this world. When you think about death, don’t you simultaneously think of light and darkness? He’s a character whose contrast needs to be that stark, and as mentioned earlier, unraveling heavy material in a way that is not [heavy] was charming.” Im Soo Hyang described the drama as a challenge for herself and elaborated, “Gye Jeol is someone who believes she is ordinary, incompetent, and timid, and that no one will ever love her. Despite these beliefs, she lives very bravely and then miraculously meets Kokdu. She gains hope and finds meaning in life through Kokdu, who loves Gye Jeol unconditionally.” Spoiler The two actors then picked key charms of each other’s characters, with Im Soo Hyang sharing, “It’ll be fun if you pay close attention to how Kokdu’s image changes moment by moment. After being dark one moment, he also closely follows Gye Jeol around like a puppy. If you watch from the side, he’s like Jim Carrey. You’ll be able to see a really wide variety of actor Kim Jung Hyun’s faces.” Kim Jung Hyun continued, “Gye Jeol is someone with an unchanging loveliness. She’s a character with a pitiful past but she recovers right away and stands back up. Should I say it’s a lovable stubbornness?” Spoiler Lastly, the pair explained the message behind “Kokdu: Season of Deity.” Im Soo Hyang shared, “While chatting with the director before filming, I asked, ‘What’s the message you want to share through this drama?’ They picked one of Gye Jeol’s lines: ‘Kokdu, do you like yourself?’ Both Kokdu and Gye Jeol cannot wholeheartedly love themselves and feel hollow in one part of their hearts. This question felt like it was giving the answer ‘anyone has the right to be loved.'” Kim Jung Hyun chimed in, “This is also a question that can be applied to every character that appears in the drama. They each overcome their insecurities and find real love. I hope it’s conveyed well so that viewers are able to relate.” Spoiler “Kokdu: Season of Deity” premieres on January 27 at 9:50 p.m. KST and the actors’ full interview and pictorial will be featured in the February issue of Singles Korea! https://www.soompi.com/article/1564266wpp/kim-jung-hyun-and-im-soo-hyang-rave-about-the-message-of-kokdu-season-of-deity-their-characters-charms-and-more
larus
Exclusive Interview: Kim Jung Hyun And Im Soo Hyang Share Their Favorite “Kokdu: Season Of Deity” Scenes, Personal Goals, And More TV/Film Jan 27, 2023 by TeamSOOMPI “Kokdu: Season of Deity” is gearing up for its much-anticipated premiere! The new fantasy romance tells the story of a grim reaper named Kokdu (Kim Jung Hyun) who comes down to this world to punish humans every 99 years. When Kokdu meets Han Gye Jeol (Im Soo Hyang), a doctor with mysterious abilities, he starts working as a visiting doctor. Ahead of the premiere, the actors took time to share some insight into the drama and reveal a few fun facts about themselves. Read their responses below! What do you think is special about “Kokdu: Season of Deity” when compared to other fantasy romance dramas? Kim Jung Hyun: I think the character’s traits are unique. Kokdu is eccentric, delicate, and also thoughtful at the same time. Although he is a character that does not exist in reality, I think his personality and temperament make this drama unique when compared to other dramas. Im Soo Hyang: I think the character Kokdu, who is the god of the underworld who guides the way of the deceased, is a distinguished point that sets this drama apart from other fantasy romance dramas. He sometimes breaks the rule of not intervening in the life and death of humans and even harms them. Also, it was new to me that a human being does not have to unconditionally obey the word of the god but rather that the god cannot disobey the word of Gye Jeol who is a human. With these aspects added, the drama has refreshing and special charms. Is there anything that you specifically prepared for this role? Kim Jung Hyun: Do Jin Woo is rather static when compared to Kokdu, and Kokdu is very dynamic. So I tried to restrain myself as much as possible when portraying Do Jin Woo, whereas I tried to portray Kokdu’s expressions bigger than what I imagined. However, as always, I tried to focus on the particular goal of each scene for each character rather than focusing on playing dual roles. Im Soo Hyang: I paid a lot of attention to Gye Jeol’s fashion style because there were scenes where Gye Jeol had to look neither too pretty nor too old-fashioned but still lovely. So that’s why I put a lot of thought into her styling. Also, because Gye Jeol has [scenes with] a lot of lines, I tried to keep the [speaking] tempo fast to match the flow of the drama. What is your favorite scene in “Kokdu: Season of Deity”? Kim Jung Hyun: The scene that comes to mind is the one where Kokdu asks Gye Jeol if she is Seol Hee on the ginkgo tree road comes to mind. I think it was interesting to see [Kokdu’s] anticipation for his ex-lover when he was thinking that a thousand years of waiting was meaningless. Im Soo Hyang: All the scenes in “Kokdu: Season of Deity” are my favorites, so it is hard to pick just one. But if I were to name one memorable scene, it would be the scene where Kokdu and Gye Jeol meet for the first time. I doubt that there is a romantic comedy drama where the male lead will kick off the first encounter with the female lead by strangling her neck. It was a gesture befitting the god of the underworld Kokdu, who is unfamiliar with the world of humans. I thought it was cute that Gye Jeol was not intimidated even in that situation. I find it memorable because it is such an intense first encounter between the two. What is the most difficult aspect of playing your character in this drama? Kim Jung Hyun: I tried to portray Kokdu’s expressions and gestures to be bigger than those of other characters. I am concerned about how viewers will react to this. Im Soo Hyang: Since there are many scenes that go back and forth between historical backdrop and modern backdrop, we often had to travel to other regions of the country for filming, and we traveled long distances, there was not a lot of time. There were a lot of lines in each scene, but because there was little time, I had difficulties with memorizing them. I tried to memorize the lines while traveling or during breaks. Besides your own, which “Kokdu: Season of Deity” character is your favorite? Kim Jung Hyun: I have a soft spot for Gak Shin. She is like a mother, and I think she is a character who sincerely understands Kokdu. Im Soo Hyang: My favorite character is Kokdu. Kokdu is cute, sexy, and has special powers, but he also hides secrets and pain inside. He is really a three-dimensional character to that extent. Because Kokdu has everything, he is a character that interests me as an actor. Of course, there is a lot that has to be expressed, so I also think that he would be more difficult to act out. What were your first impressions of each other, and how have they changed?? Kim Jung Hyun: When I first met Im Soo Hyang, she was so bright that I thought that she really just Gye Jeol. We are currently filming the second half of the drama, but she still exudes her bright energy. Im Soo Hyang: My first impression [of Kim Jung Hyun] and his current image are the same. Even when I first met him, he seemed to have a quiet and composed personality. As we’ve been filming together, I realized that it really is the way he is. He seemed to be careful and mature, and it has not changed between then and now. more https://www.soompi.com/article/1564450wpp/exclusive-interview-kim-jung-hyun-and-im-soo-hyang-share-their-favorite-kokdu-season-of-deity-scenes-personal-goals-and-more
larus
Premiere Watch: Bait, Kokdu: Season of Deity by missvictrix This weekend we have a crime thriller marking Jang Geun-seok’s return to dramaland (which also stars Heo Sung-tae, who never left), and a fantasy rom-com that’s high on humor and hijinks. Kokdu: Season of Deity Time slot: Friday-SaturdayBroadcaster: MBCGenre: Fantasy, rom-comEpisode count: 16 Reasons to watch: The expectations are high for this one, because it’s so ripe for hilarious hijinks and fun heart-stopping moments. I have no doubt that our leads — Kim Jung-hyun and Im Soo-hyang — will be able to pull off the comedy and chemistry required here. The question, then, is if the script will be tight enough to hold up the drama’s premise: a grim reaper returns to earth and finds himself not only playing a doctor, but getting entangled with one too. TL;DR: Kim Jung-hyun is a grim reaper who’s confronted with a perplexing human female in the form of Im Soo-hyang https://www.dramabeans.com/2023/01/premiere-watch-bait-kokdu-season-of-deity/

larus
Kim Jung-hyun returns to 'Kokdu Season'... "Work hard with a new heart" Actor Kim Jung-hyun, who has been suspended for a while due to a controversy over his private life, will resume his acting career with MBC TV's new Friday-Saturday drama 'Kokdu's Season'. Kim Jung-hyun bowed her head at the drama production presentation held at MBC Golden Mouse Hall in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul on the January27th. Kim Jung-hyun revealed his impressions of returning to the drama and said, “I am grateful to MBC for reaching out to me during the long and short time for self-reflection.” "From the beginning of (the drama) until now, I was concerned that this good work that these people (actors and staff) have been working hard on would be a nuisance because of the person I am," he said. I wish,” he added. 'Kokdu's Season' is a fantasy romance that tells the story of Kokdu, the god of death who comes down to this world every 99 years to punish humans, and meets Han Han-jeol, a doctor with mysterious abilities. It is a bright drama with comical elements. Kim Jung-hyun played the role of Kokdu, who earned the wrath of the Creator. Im Soo-hyang plays Han Han-jeol, a specialist in emergency medicine, who is the romance partner. When Lim Soo-hyang was asked about her acting chemistry with Kim Jung-hyun, she said, "I also said that I would like to receive the Best Couple Award." she answered. She went on to praise Kim Jung-hyun, saying, "There are many things to learn from his acting, and he is delicate and the basics are solid, so I received a lot of stimulation from him." In the drama, Kim Da-som plays the role of Tae Jeong-won, an assistant professor of gastroenterology who has both beauty and skills, Ahn Woo-yeon plays the homicide detective Han-cheol, who is quick to pursue Kokdu, and Kim In-kwon plays the greedy rookie Ok-sin, the chairman of the discord group, making the story more colorful. Producer Baek Soo-chan, who is in charge of directing, said, "'The Season of Kokdu' is a fairy tale for adults," and added, "The fun point is to see whether it will be a cruel fairy tale or a warm fairy tale." He continued, "There are similarities to other (fantasy) works, such as the setting from the previous life to the present, but I tried to direct it more like a fairy tale." https://www.yna.co.kr/view/AKR20230127100600005?section=entertainment/index&site=entertainment

larus
Kokdu: Season of Deity: Episodes 1-2 (First Impressions) by DaebakGrits Our latest fantasy romance starts off a bit rough, but it finds its footing — and its comedic chops — in the latter half of its premiere when our (not a) grim reaper takes over the body of a recently deceased doctor. With a murderous desire to unalive sinning humans preoccupying his thoughts and time on earth, will he recognize our leading lady as the woman who can break his curse? EPISODES 1-2 WEECAP Kokdu: Season of Deity kicks off its story the same way many of its genre predecessors have: in the distant past and with a tragic love story. This particular tale of woe stars SEOL-HUI (Im Soo-hyang) as a woman about to be sold off as a concubine and OH-HYUN (Kim Jung-hyun), her secret lover who serves as part of the convoy sent to protect Seol-hui and escort her to her new husband. Together, Oh-hyun and Seol-hui conspire to run away in the night, but this wouldn’t be the epic tale of sadness upon which the rest of our story is built if they escaped unscathed and lived happily ever after. Nope! Instead, a soldier loyal to Seol-hui’s future husband catches wind of their escape plan, and he and a bunch of his comrades corner Oh-hyun and murder him in front of Seol-hui. The bloodshed doesn’t end there, and on her wedding night, Seol-hui uses her hairpin to stab her husband in the neck, and when his guards come rushing to his aid, Seol-hui ends her own life in the same manner. In the present, DOCTOR HAN GYE-JEOL (a modern day Seol-hui, also played by Im Soo-hyang) listens as one of her patients wraps up her narrative of the fable, but when Gye-jeol sympathizes with the deceased lovers, the patient is quick to remind her that many innocent lives — the soldiers? — were lost as a result of their love story. The couple was, in fact, punished after their tragically romantic demise. Seol-hui was cursed to be reborn over and over, and in each new life she lost someone special to her before committing suicide — just as she did in the past. Oh-hyun, on the other hand, became KOKDU and was tasked with escorting lives to the underworld. Before Gye-joel can deep dive into the differences between Kokdu and a grim reaper, she is rudely interrupted and physically assaulted by the daughter of one of her former patients (cameo by Jung Young-joo). This is where the story started to lose my interest. Once again, we’ve got another drama on our hands that wants to turn hospitals into villainously corrupt organizations and doctors into equally evil henchmen who go against the Hippocratic Oath out of fear and/or greed. Thus, because the patient who assaulted Gye-jeol is wealthy and influential, Gye-joel is fired. more https://www.dramabeans.com/2023/01/kokdu-season-of-deity-episodes-1-2-first-impressions/
RomanticRosebud
Saw the first two episodes and really liked it. Might not be or everyone with how silly it is but hey if I can find myself laughing it's all good. I know lots of people online don't like the lead actress but I find her ok. I've seen much worse. backstreetboysfan
Kim Jung Hyun Tries To Talk Im Soo Hyang Into A Contract Relationship In “Kokdu: Season Of Deity” + “How Do You Play?” Cast Makes Cameo The relationship between Kokdu (Kim Jung Hyun) and Han Gye Jeol (Im Soo Hyang) may be taking a new turn! “Kokdu: Season of Deity” is a fantasy romance which tells the story of a grim reaper named Kokdu who comes down to this world to punish humans every 99 years. When Kokdu meets Han Gye Jeol, a doctor with mysterious abilities, he starts working as a visiting doctor. Spoilers Previously in “Kokdu: Season of Deity,” Han Gye Jeol believed Kokdu’s words that he would prove her innocence at the hospital’s Disciplinary Committee meeting, but what came back to her was painful betrayal. Not only did Kokdu, who pretended to be Do Jin Woo, ruin her plans by lying that he had amnesia in front of the committee members, he also hurt her feelings by spitting out harsh words. Having lost both her job and her trust in Kokdu, Han Gye Jeol prepares to get back on her feet as always. Kokdu reappears in front of her and proposes a contract relationship for 90 days on the condition that she will be given her job back and provided company housing. However, as she is determined not to fall for his cunning ploy again, Han Gye Jeol starts a loan project herself after finding a renowned master who can provide her a start-up fund. Kokdu, as he is convinced that Gye Jeol is the woman who can lift the curse, follows her wherever she goes and tries to talk her into signing the contract with him. Amidst all of this, the newly released stills capture Kokdu and Han Gye Jeol bickering with each other. As opposed to Han Gye Jeol, who is stirring a giant spatula hard to grab the master’s attention, Kokdu just looks at her with a smile. The next moment, Han Gye Jeol uses her mysterious ability which only works on the god of the underworld and makes Kokdu do the work on behalf of her. Spoiler Episode 3 will also feature special appearances from MBC’s “How Do You Play?” members Yoo Jae Suk, Jung Joon Ha, and Mijoo, adding excitement to the story.
