EVERYONE HAS A SECRET review by Darcy Paquet koreanfilm.org The Han sisters -- the elder, married Ji-young; bookish middle sister Sun-young and the free-spirited Mi-young -- find the placid surface of their lives upturned with the arrival of Soo-hyun, a suave sweet-talker who seems to be the perfect man. Mi-young first discovers him at a club and brings him home to meet the family, however he ends up serving as a catalyst for the unleashing all of the household's repressed emotions. A remake by Jang Hyun-soo (Ray Bang) of Gerard Stembridge's Irish feature About Adam (2000), Everybody Has Secrets is an attractive, slickly-packaged feature that highlights the development of Korea's star system. Lee Byung-heon (JSA, A Bittersweet Life) is probably a leading choice for the best-looking man in Korea, and this film is structured almost as an homage to his sex appeal. Lee plays Soo-hyun in such a way that his famous so-called "killer smile" remains a mystery right up to the final scenes. As for the women, although Kim Hyo-jin (Legend of the Evil Lake) lacks some charm as Mi-young, the elder sisters steal the show. Choo Sang-mi (Turning Gate, A Smile) as the married Ji-young has long been known for the intelligence and sensuality she brings to her roles, and here she slowly and elegantly allows herself to come under Soo-hyun's spell. Meanwhile Choi Ji-woo -- a huge star in neighboring Japan after the success of her TV drama Winter Sonata -- puts her considerable talent on display in portraying a woman whose deeply-buried passions suddenly fight for expression. Released in the peak summer season where it was quickly overwhelmed by competition from more popular Hollywood and Korean titles, Everybody Has Secrets was arguably more successful in Japan, where it turned a modest-sized release into a more sustained box office performance. As such, the film represents not only a showcase of the Korean star system, but also an example of how Korean films have come to rely ever more on audiences in Japan. If the film ultimately falls a bit short, this is perhaps because it relies a little too much on the plot's catchy but thin central premise. It takes more than good acting to create an engaging and memorable comedy, and it would have been nice if there was a bit more happening in a narrative sense. Still, several highly amusing scenes from this film stand out in the memory, so it's probably worth a watch if one's expectations are kept in check. (Darcy Paquet)

A mysterious stranger seduces three sisters in this sensual romantic comedy from director Jang Hyeon-Su. Thanks to strong performances and a clever (yet borrowed) premise, the film is a welcome departure from the umpteenth My Sassy Girl knockoff. Review by Calvin McMillin: From writer/director Jang Hyeon-Su (Born to Kill) comes Everybody Has Secrets, a comic tale of sex and secrecy that argues that not all secrets need to be revealed, especially if they can fuel a loving relationship. This remake of a little-known Irish film called About Adam features popular Korean idol Lee Byung-Hun (JSA) as a modern day Don Juan who ends up bedding a trio of sisters, while at the same time irrevocably changing their lives…which begs the question, is it a change for the better? The film begins with Mi-Young, the headstrong youngest sibling, cruelly dumping her loyal boyfriend in search of Mr. Right. While singing at a local nightclub, she spots Choi Su-Hyeon (Lee), and believing she's found her Prince Charming, quickly makes her move. And it's only a matter of time before the two are dating and - at least, on the surface - much in love. Their rather perfunctory romance eventually reaches its high point when Mi-Young proposes to Su-Hyeon at a family gathering. Portraying the role of the old fashioned gentleman, Su-Hyeon poses the question back at Mi-Young, who of course, accepts. Sounds like a run-of-the-mill romance, huh? Well, this is just the first quarter of the film!

It's during this festive occasion that we truly begin to grasp that there's more going on in the film than we've been lead to believe, since there is at least one attendee who doesn't look so happy: Su-Young (Choi Ji-Woo, from the mega popular Winter Sonata), a bespectacled, twenty-seven year old virgin and middle sister of the family. To explain her dismay, the film then flashes backward, as previous scenes are cast in a new light thanks to the inclusion of additional scenes that occurred "in the gaps" of what we've already witnessed. In this middle section of the film, the timeline is then fleshed out to show that Su-Hyeon and Su-Young have been carrying on an affair. Su-Young's story runs parallel with the previous one, as we watch their illicit relationship develop and eventually get to see the consequences of his proposal and how that impacts the bookish Su-Young. What's interesting here is that in comparison with his relationship with Mi-Young, his affair with Su-Young seems to be far more solid and, quite possibly, the perfect match. And when the waterworks come (this is a Korean movie, after all), we begin to suspect that what we're really watching is yet another melodrama about a man torn between two loves. But not so fast. There's one more sister. And it's when the film then turns its attention to Jin-Young (Choo Sang-Mi), the clan's eldest daughter, that one begins to seriously question Su-Hyeon's motives. Married to a doctor and raising a child, Jin-Young is a woman who's lost sight of her own identity, so immersed is she in her roles as wife and mother. Her boorish husband pays little attention to her and their sex life is practically nonexistent. Here, the super-smooth Su-Hyeon reawakens Jin-Young's buried sexuality with predictable results. As with the previous story, Jin-Young's reveals that there was even more going on than we've seen in Mi-Young's and Su-Young's individual stories, as those scenes take on even more new meanings.

The last quarter (or less) of the movie deals with the fallout of all these affairs. Of course, with Su-Hyeon and Mi-Young engaged to be married amidst all this extracurricular sexual activity, any hopes for a happy resolution seem impossible. Luckily for him, Su-Hyeon is the master of the impossible, and even better, it seems he's not the only one who has secrets. Although based on About Adam (starring Kate Hudson, among other actors), Everybody Has Secrets is similar in many respects to the Witches of Eastwick, the star-studded Hollywood flick that featured a devilish Jack Nicholson unleashing the fire hidden inside three women. And a supernatural explanation for Su-Hyeon's motives will probably cross the viewer's mind more than once during the film. He is, for all intents and purposes, the perfect man: sensitive, yet manly, able to become whatever the woman needs whenever the occasion arises. Yet it's notable that at all times this ability never seems to be a calculated deception. And perhaps that's a credit to Lee Byung-Hun, who imbues the morally ambiguous character with such a level of sincerity that he never seems like a sleazeball. But the movie still hinges on the question: why does he do the things that he does? And just who is he really? There are answers given in the film, but the ambiguity of just who or what he is may frustrate some viewers looking for either definitive answers or a moral justification. Surrounding Lee Byung-Hun is an excellent cast, with each of the three actress giving fine performances. The best of the lot would have to be Choi Ji-Woo, whose character's transformation from bookworm to sexually liberated woman is a wonderful sight to behold. As indicated earlier, her character's romance with Su-Hyeon is probably the most interesting and helps hold the film together. But it's not all sex and romance; there's a lot of humor at work in the film. The funniest bit in the film involves a short interlude in one of the sisters' stories in which the girl's teenage brother (Jeon Jae-Young, from Wet Dreams 2 and Taegukgi) enlists Su-Hyeon's help in scoring with his chaste girlfriend. Hilariously, the magnetic Su-Hyeon seems to charm him as well, as the poor boy begins to fear that he's turning gay! But just when you think that the uber-charming Su-Hyeon has seduced the boy's girlfriend right out from under him, it's revealed that he's up to something far more positive. From a structural standpoint, Everybody Has Secrets is a joy to watch. It's not the first film to utilize this variation of flashbacks (nor is About Adam), but the way in which events unfold and "re-unfold" is delightful departure from the more traditionally linear storytelling methods employed in most movies. Of course, some viewers may end up having a problem with the premise altogether, particularly those possessing a moral code about sex that they feel must extend to the movies that they watch. But for audiences who don't find themselves confusing or conflating movies with real life, Everybody Has Secrets is a sexy, fun-filled picture that makes for an entertaining diversion. Jin-young is the first sister of the family. Sex is neither as good nor often as it was before the marriage. Her husband ignores her in bed. For her, love is a forgotten word. When is a remake a remake, and does it even matter? Jang Hyeon-su's "Everybody Has Secrets" is a smart, witty and well-cast romantic comedy. It's not a great film, but it's an enjoyable one, and - to western eyes - a major improvement on his rambling comedy "Ray-Ban." It's also the first official remake of a western film by a Korean director.

But so what? The original 2000 film, "About Adam," an Anglo-Irish production written and directed by Gerard Stembridge, was essentially an uncredited remake of a 1968 Italian film, "Theorem," directed by homosexual Marxist poet-turned-filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini and starring the then-iconic British actor Terence Stamp in the Lee Byeong-heon role.

Pasolini's film, which exploited the new sexual freedoms of '60s cinema, was both a love letter to Stamp's youthful, acquiline beauty and a hate letter to the corrupt Italian bourgeoisie. Stembridge's film was a thoroughly heterosexual, apolitical comedy tailored to the social aspirations of a city (Dublin) that had recently reinvented itself. Jang's movie attempts to expand the sexual borders of the Korean romantic-comedy genre while reflecting the contemporary aspirations of upper-middle-class, urbanised Koreans.

In a heightened, irreal way, all three films feel "right." In "Secrets," writers Kim Yeong-chan and Kim Heui-jae stay close to "Adam" but tweak the script with Korean characteristics and behavioural mannerisms.

Despite all the talk of today's "global village" and "multi-culturalism," audiences still have deeply implanted sensors about whether a film feels right. Whether it's an official remake or not is largely the concern of film critics and copyright lawyers.

Audiences simply don't care, and are unlikely to have seen the original film anyway. Most westerners who flocked to see "The Magnificent Seven" or "Fistful of Dollars" had never even seen Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" or "Yojimbo"; they went because the movies had local stars and were original spins on a familiar genre. And how many Americans had seen the Japanese "Ring" before running to the Hollywood remake? About as many as the number of Koreans who've seen "About Adam."

The best remakes, whether "official" or not, have been true to the cultures and times in which they're set. Bollywood regularly plunders Hollywood storylines for raw material and mashes them down into star-led musical fantasies aimed at rural Indian audiences. Hong Kong has long flourished on Sino-cised versions of non-native genres (spy films, gangster movies, Japanese chambara films) that feel right, first and foremost, for Cantonese audiences.

Will the many planned Hollywood remakes of Korean films - if they ever appear - feel right? If made by Americans and with big-name stars, probably. But if, after all the newspaper headlines, the remakes never happen, there will be a good reason why: they just didn't feel "right."

HAHA. This movie is really fun. Although i didn't get the point of the story. well, yeah i do get the point. But eh... But i liked the actors and how they really portrayed their characters. And i especially liked how the story was patched together. For me, that made it a fun movie to watch. Good directiing. hehe.

Yup, totally agree that while the movie is nothing to shout about... it's really quite an entertaining watch... provided you're not watching it with your parents, etc.

It's really a simple yet sweet and sexy romance to watch. Nothing was exposed, crude or lewd or gross... just a little on the naughty side. The storyline's nothing much but clearly the actors had a lot of fun filming it. Their chemistry's just nice... all in all, a feel-good all around.

Though it has no moral obligations at all... not even a real positive message... just a pure imaginary sexy fun... who knows, a little secret can be good too... to spice up you life!

After working together in BD, CJW and LBH are back together in the movie Secret. Different from their usual sad/mellow roles, this film is the story about an innocence girl who dreams about sex and is intoxicated with love for her sister boyfriend. What are their opinions about this film, shd love be a secret or be publicize?

Q : this is the second time you work together after BD, what are ur impression about each other?

LBH : She hasn’t change much, still beautiful. We have become very close friend so the shooting was very smooth.

CJW : When I start reading the script, I thought this role was perfect for BH, and I was right it was him. He hasn't changed, still professional. As this was a romantic comedy, he has given me a lot of advise which was very useful to me Example ; during the bed scene, if a women was telling me to do this and that, it would have been very awkward, instead BH gave me suggestion on what we should do, he is very understanding.

Q : Compare to BD, which role are easier?

LBH : from acting point of view, nothing is easy. Every film can make people laugh or cry its because of the efforts of the whole crew we can produce good results. Whatever roles I am playing, I will work give my best, without exception its a light comedy.

CJW : Actually I like sad story but this is different. I can feel the change, this is an exciting experience. Eventhough getting into the character role in BD was very difficult because sad story can be too excessive. But in secrets, I am playing a role that I have never done before, so it feels great and was a new challenge. (CJW can make her tears drop in 5 second that’s why she is name the queen of tears in Korea)

Q : Which part of the movie shd we lookout for ?

LBH : this is a very light romantic comedy, I think everyone will like it

CJW : look at byung hun intoxicating smile! In this film, look at that smile, certainly many women will be attracted to him

Q : as an artist, do you think that love issues should be publicize or kept a secret?

LBH : I think every body has different opinion about this, some feel it is their responsibility to publicize it and some thinks that private life should not be influence by the public and best kept secret

CJW : its better not to be found out, too many paparazzi! Once found out there is no end!

Q : in this age where everything is false, do you expect a prince in a white horse or a women that is wise?

LBH : gentle, humble, wise...but I am also gentle.... I think she and I should be balanced, if not no matter how much love we have , it may changed one day.

CJW : I am a type that never dream about prince, I only hope that he is a man with authority bearing, have a sense of responsibility, can fight for his family and career, makes me feel that my life is complete because of him. The most important thing is two people that are not afraid to face hardship hand in hand.

There's no doubt who the biggest foreign celebrities are in Japan right now-South Koreans. When Lee Byung-hun and Choi Ji-woo visited these shores recently, nearly 1,500 screaming fans showed up at Narita airport to greet them. That was followed by an almost hysterical reception at the Tokyo International Film festival, where 300 photographers and 800 reporters crammed into their press conference to hear about their new romantic comedy Everybody Has Secrets.

The couple, along with Bae Yong-joon, have swept through Japan this year like a fever. Choi first starred with Bae in NHK's phenomenally popular Winter Sonata. Now she and Lee are appearing in the Saturday night NHK drama Beautiful Days. "Every time I come to Japan, the number of people who come to my press conferences seems to increase," mused the 34-year-old Lee, known in South Korea for his killer smile.

The elegant 29-year-old Choi, who looked like she had stepped from the pages of a fashion magazine, said she found it gratifying to have so many fans in Japan. Born in Pusan, she majored in aerobics at Pusan Women's Professional College before beginning her acting career. During her visit, she made a ¥1 million donation to victims of the Niigata earthquake. Lee added that he hopes their new film will bring a smile to the faces of the people of Niigata.

Directed by Chang Hyun-soo, Everybody Has Secrets is the story of three sisters who are completely smitten with a mysterious young businessman whose seductive power they cannot resist. All three try to keep their relationship with him secret from the others. Then he's invited to their mother's birthday party and the fun and games start.

"Romantic comedy is a new field for me," said Lee. "It was difficult because it's not realism. I had to be careful not to overact, so it was a challenge."

Choi said that when she read the script, she was worried at first. "I've done many love stories and I do want to challenge a new genre. Still, it was great working with Lee. I think any woman who sees him in this movie will simply melt on the spot."

Both Lee and Choi are hoping to expand their careers beyond their homeland. Choi is taking English lessons with an eye to Hollywood. She doesn't discount making a movie in Japan, either.

"I love Japanese movies too. If I can break the language barrier, I would love to be in a Japanese movie," she said.

Lee said he gets asked that question all the time. "My mind is open on the subject. I basically don't care in which country I make a movie, as long as I can work with good directors."

'Everybody Has a Secret' Rights Sell for US$5.5 Mil to Japan

SEOUL, July 14 (Yonhap) -- The rights to a new South Korean film about three sisters falling in love with one playboy was sold to Japan for US$5.5 million, the highest export price won by a homegrown movie, its producer said Wednesday.

Taewon Entertainment Co. said it signed a contract with Japanese entertainment group Amuse to screen the film at more than 200 cinemas in Japan. The romantic comedy titled "Everybody Has a Secret," scheduled to open at local theaters on July 29, cost only 3.2 billion won ($2.78 million) to make. The previous export price record was shared by director Ahn Byung-gi's high-school horror film "Bunshinsaba" and Kang Woo-seok's blockbuster "Silmido."

The rights to both sold for $3 million to Japan. Park Chan-wook's "Old Boy," which won the Cannes Film Festival's Grand Prize of Jury award, was exported for $2 million to the same country. Taewon officials attributed the successful pre-sale of the film by director Jang Hyeon-su to the growing popularity of Lee Byung-hun, the playboy, and Choi Ji-woo, one of the three sisters. The two acted in "All In" and "Winter Sonata," dramas being broadcast in Japan on NHK and that TV station's satellite channel, BS-2, respectively.

SEOUL, July 23 (Yonhap) -- Can a secret make people happy? Can larger secrets make people more happy? What if they are about your lover who flirted with your sisters?

Director Jang Hyeon-soo says "yes" in his new film "Everybody Has a Secret".

The Romantic Comedy, a remake of the 2002 Irish flick "About Adam", is about a handsome, intelligent guy who secretly falls in love with three sisters is a chant to playboys.

Mi-yeong (Kim Hyo-jin), a jazz vocalist and the youngest of the three sisters, has a crush on a good-looking, cool guy who dropped by the jazz bar where she sings. That was Soo-hyun (Lee Byeong-Heon), a man born to be a Don Juan. An advocate of free sex who thinks love is like a shopping, Mi-yeong tells her sister Seon-yeong (Choi Ji-woo) that Soo-hyun is perfect and like a man who just walked out of a novel. She later asks him to marry her.

December 1, 2004 S. Korean Romantic Comedy Opens Successfully in Japan

SEOUL, Dec. 1 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean romantic comedy "Everybody Has Secrets" had a successful opening in Japan last weekend as it placed fourth in the local box office, a Japanese on-line movie magazine said Wednesday.

The film, about a South Korean playboy who flirts with three sisters at the same time and keeps his love affairs with them a secret, trailed two local movies and "The Polar Express," a Hollywood film starring Tom Hanks, Eiga.com said.

Everybody Has Secrets, directed by Jang Hyeon-soo, stars several South Korean soap opera stars who are famous in many regions of Asia, like Choi Jii-woo and Lee Byung-hun. Other South Korean movies also had success when they debuted in Japan, with "Untold Scandal," a love story during the Jeoseon Dynasty, finishing in 8th place during its first week and "Old Boy," the winner of the Grand Prize of the Jury at this year's Cannes Film Festival, in 10th place.
