The Most Mind-Boggling K-Drama Endings

a3ndW8B.jpg?width=683&height=910

cr. @Sleepy Owl @partyon

Chingus, we've all experienced it, a kdrama starts out so well only to transcend into something that looks like what the Truck of Doom ran over. :grimace: In this event we not only look at bad endings, but at the endings that made no sense - the most mind-boggling endings of kdrama land.

We have compiled a list of mind-boggling endings and have also written a short synopsis of each one. If you were planning on watching any of these dramas, we suggest you don't open the spoiler tags below. :joy:

Feel free to vote for the dramas you find the most mind-boggling - even if you didn't watch them. You are allowed to vote for dramas just based on the description of the ending below.

Group 1:

Spoiler

49 Days
After suffering so much, and ensuring that she is able to live and wake up from coma since three people genuinely shed tears for her, the FL is told that she does not have much and will die soon in a few days by the Grim Reaper.

A Good Supper
Murderer 2nd FL doesn't go to jail or get any punishment. The most selfless character gets terminal cancer and dies. He is the FL's guardian whom she's known since she's 6. They fall in love, but since he dies she ends up with her childhood friend she has no feelings for.

Again My Life
The ML realizes that he cannot defeat the bad guy using law, so he decides to run for the Presidency to challenge the bad guy. The bad guy flees after his bad deeds are revealed to the public, only for his body to have been found somewhere. It is never revealed if it is his body or not. All the people working for this bad guy seem to join a new organization and plan to do pretty much the same thing which the ML had been trying to stop. So basically all the ML did kind of end up in nothing.

Alchemy of Souls
Possessed FL shoots her lover, the ML. He dies but resurrects from the fire. She jumps into a lake but is pulled up from it by two unknown characters. What happens to the ML and FL? Why has the Crown Prince turned evil? Why is the bad guy still alive? Why is the fraudster blind girl still not dead? Why did the ML's appa have to die? How much did the cancelled wedding cost? Why are there so many questions left?

Alice
The secret killer ended up being a variant of ML himself. He was the one who killed his mom, and the one pulling all the strings in the background. In the end, FL is the only one who remembers everything, while everything seems to have changed. ML does not remember her, and then they hint towards them meeting in the end.

Arthdal Chronicles
While the Bad guy declares war on the tribe ML is in, the ML is presumed to yet another reincarnation of a different "Prophesized Hero" in that tribe. The drama then shows the continuation of the story in brief with painted scenes and some background dialogues, hinting towards a 2nd season, which never came for years.

Awaken
After blowing up the secret lab ML's mom was operating, the ML and his mom are presumed to be dead in the fire, but their bodies are not found. Months Later FL gets to know about someone looking similar to ML in a nearby village living with his mom, but she is unable to find him. In the end, while FL is arresting a criminal, she briefly sees the ML's back as he walks away, taking out his favorite lollipop.

Big
The happy ending was supposed to be between the heroine and the hero of our story - i.e. the boy in a coma in the hospital. Not between the heroine and the body he was borrowing while she fell in love with him.

Big Mouth
The ending is "sorta" wrapped up in the last 10 minutes, killing off the FL, making the ML into a murderer and not answering crucial questions that had been central to the plot. These writers have botched more than one drama ending btw... :unamused:

Cheat on Me If You Can
Mystery writer FL suspects her hubby ML is cheating on her, and the drama revolves around him trying not to be caught as they have a contract that he will die if he cheats. In the end, the FL gets a call that her hubby wants her to be killed and finds out he really was cheating on her. The ML returns home with flowers; she surprises him from behind and stabs him as she smiles. Problem is that we don't know if she used her fake knife (that she would test different murder scenarios with for her books) or a real one.

Cheese In the Trap
ML just left and FL's heart breaks. Then, the episode jumps three years into the future… where they still aren’t together. Instead, we see the FL still sending the ML emails that go unread. Finally, he opens one email. And then we hear ML calling out to FL. Then it ends. Seriously?"

Crash Landing On You
The OTP realize they can’t be together in either of their countries - so they see each other for a couple of weeks each year on neutral ground. Like Switzerland. And oh, the 2nd ML dies.

Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol
Adult ditzy broke pianist falls in love with runaway rich high-schooler. He gets cancer and noble idiocy syndrome and disappears from her life without a trace or explanation. She is heartbroken but he comes back after some years when he is cancer free, and she forgives him in less than 2 seconds.

Fashion King
The ML is assassinated. The killer's identity is never revealed. Driving the audience crazy.

Feel Good to Die
FL tries to transform her prickly and unreasonable boss (ML) into a "normal person". Somehow she ends up falling for him instead of the adorable and empathetic 2nd ML (whom she ends up with in the original webtoon).

God's Gift: 14 Days
One character commits suicide only because a fortune teller ahjumma tells him to. Turns out he was a killer. Instead of saving the FL in another timeline, he drowns himself.

Gu Family Book
The FL dies in the arms of her sobbing lover (ML) who has just asked to marry him. Then our ML hero is propelled four centuries into the future - an ending that resembles no earthly logic.

Hellbound
The truth behind the Grim Reapers is never really revealed in the drama, and how people are being chosen to be killed by them. Moreover the show ended with one of the victims of them getting back into life leaving room for a second season without really explaining anything

I Summon You, Gold
All the married couples are still together. The FL was the main character but somehow along the way they cast her to the side, moreover she was left alone, everyone is happily married and enjoying their life and the FL has ……………her career.

Innocent Man
ML may or may not have lost his memory when he proposes to the FL. They may have started a new romance or rekindled an old one. We may never know. But what we do know, is that the ending makes no sense.

Group 2:

Spoiler

IRIS
Unfortunately, the ML was shot by an unknown IRIS member - on his way to a lighthouse ready to propose to his fiancé - engagement ring ready. No idea who the shooter is. The end.

Jirisan
As if bad CG and CGI wasn't the biggest issue with this drama, in the last episode the FL was buried in a rockfall and had to use a wheelchair. But then she regained her health a year later. The ML who had been in a coma due tot he accident, also recovered happily and reunited with the FL - but not in a romantic notion.

King 2 Hearts
Poor 2nd FL (the princess) is left severely injured (paralyzed from waist down) in a terrorist attack. A royal bodyguard (2nd ML) is by her side and they fall in love. Then he's killed off.

Korean Odyssey
The ML becomes indebted to the FL for what he did to her when she was a child. Then it is revealed that FL is a Sam Jang and is fated to die at the hands of her true love, the ML. In the end, the FL dies in the ML's arms. The poor female zombie didn't get justice either. These writers tend to kill off their FLs in every drama. :unamused:

Love Alarm
Love triangle - all including a Love Alarm app which determines who the user is in love with. FL and ML1 end up together in season 1 but FL had installed a shield on her Love Alarm app so that she could hide her true feelings. In season 2 she's still conflicted if she should be with ML1 or ML2. She ditches the app and goes with her gut feeling and ditches ML2 in favor for ML1, leaving many viewers frustrated.

Love ft. Marriage and Divorce - Original Barf Drama
Three seasons of barf plot making no sense, the ending proved to be the big finale with the writer's obsession with naked grandpa ghosts, grim reapers, deaths, sudden pairings that made no sense and dialogues that made the audience want to stuff their ears forever. The writer should probably be banned from this network too...

Lovers in Paris
The main character imagines her romantic fairy tale. In the end, leaving viewers to realize that the whole series was not really real - only imagination.

Memories of the Alhambra
The drama ends at Hyun Bin's silhouette with a sword in his hand. But the question is, Is he alive? Or just alive in the game? If he is in the cave, where is his body?

Mirae's Choice (Marry Him if You Dare)
The whole point of the drama was the FL making a choice who she should marry the second time around, and the audience never sees who she marries. WTH?

Missing 9
The bad dude killed many members of the group who were struck on the island with him. He tried to continue the same when he came back, only to be caught and imprisoned. In the end, it seems he is free from the prison, joins the same group of people who he wanted to kill, and play colors with them having fun.

Mouse
The ML realized that he was actually the one who was the killer that he was investigating. After getting another guy’s brain being transplanted to him, he seemed to have changed. He was pretty disappointed by the whole revelation. In the end he ends up in prison, kills his father chopping off his head. In the end it is hinted he seems to have been forgiven, since he dies peacefully in a church.

Mr. Queen
Male womanizer chef ends up in a coma and wakes up in the Queen's body in Joseon times. He/she and the ML (King) fall in love, but they part forever when he/she wakes up from his coma and leaves the Queen's body  - leaving the original Queen's soul in charge. Chef is teary eyed and the King feels as if something important is missing. Could have been a progressive show, only to be watered down into an illogical ending.

My Name
The leads sleep together without much hint of romance between them before. The next morning the ML is shot by the bad guy since he wanted to kill the person FL loves, so that she comes after him to take revenge.

Nevertheless
We don’t get answers for why the ML suddenly disappeared and came back, we don’t get any real conversation about their relationship, and there are quite a few loose ends left untied. Oh, and they changed the ending of the original work too where they don't end up together. Forced loveline anyone?

Now We Are Breaking Up
In the last episode, the main leads are still “breaking up”.  They go separate ways, the FL pursues her dreams, while the ML travels around. Years later, in the final scene, they meet again, smile at each other and the drama ends.

Oh My Lady Lord
ML gets hit by a truck in ep 1 and dies, but gets 49 extra days by his biological father who wants him to experience true love. Everyone thinks he's going to survive in the end, but then he disappears (presumably dead). Time jump - 1 year: FL receives a letter from the ML, but it turns out it was written a year ago - before he died.

Penthouse 3
After all the fight and revenge for money and power, all the adult main characters either get killed, commit suicide or die of cancer.

Princess Aurora
This drama was extended and ended up with 150 episodes. The writer killed off so many characters, there weren't any left. Even the dog was killed off. The writer was subsequently banned from the network.
Full case study on this mess can be found here:

https://www.dramabeans.com/2013/12/when-dramas-go-crazy-aurora-princess-a-case-study/"

Record of Youth
Whole drama was about ML trying to be the same kind of person he is and not let the celebrity status affect him or also his relationships. In the end he has to break up with the FL, but also goes abroad to film a movie (not sure about this one), only to return and be kinda friends with the FL and not go out with her again.

Group 3:

Spoiler

Red Shoes
"Omma and Appa had attempted to murder the FL among other things, then it was 'we are family'." synopsis by @maribella

Rooftop Prince
The lovers were split apart by 300 years: The heroine got a second chance with a reincarnated version of her prince, while the prince… died alone, forever devoted to the sweetheart he left behind in modern Seoul.

Scarlet Heart: Goryeo
The FL dies because of her illness waiting to see the King one last time before dying. Her letters to him were never answered. It is revealed that the King was ignoring those letters since FL’s now husband (King’s brother) was sending those letters under his name, and the King was ignoring them because of that. Once dead, the FL is back in the present, and sees in a museum all the great work the King did, but also the fact that he was left alone. There was hope that the two would somehow find a way to be together, but the finale left viewers heartbroken.

Sisyphus
Everyone “dies” in the finale and then all of a sudden, FL and ML are together on a plane holding hands. You know when there are countless webpages with the title <insert drama title here>: ending explained, that the ending was anything but clear.

Something Happened in Bali
Love triangle gone awry. FL can't decide who she loves - neighborhood oppa or rich spoiled volatile chaebol. When chaebol throws her away after a brief fling and marries someone else because of pressure from his family, FL goes to Bali with poor neighborhood oppa and sleeps with him (who btw stole 30 million USD from chaebol's company). Chaebol shoots them both in a fit of rage and sadness. FL tells chaebol she loves him with her last breath. Chaebol, overwhelmed by sadness, walks to the beach and commits suicide. Probably the most epic kdrama ending ever.

Start-Up
Startup ended up drowning in loopholes and the ending was rushed! How did the company grow so fast? What happened to the 2nd leads!? And Is Granny fine?

The Last Empress
Empress FL has a psychopath cheater husband (emperor). ML (emperor's bodyguard) falls in love with her and protects her. Makjang writer decides to extend the already convoluted drama, resulting in an ending where the ML is killed off a couple of episodes before the end (due to RL filming committments elsewhere), leaving the FL alone in the end.

The Third Charm
After being dumped by FL who sort of cheated on the ML, the ML was supported over the years by 2nd FL who he started dating later. They are about to get married, only for him to meet FL again, who is about to get divorced from her husband. The ML has mixed feelings, decides to break his marriage with the 2nd FL just a few days before marriage. The worst part is, both the leads don’t end up together, and decide to stay friends.

Tomorrow
The audience gets to experience this tortured marriage spanning centuries, making the audience root for a happy ending for them as they parted ways under the saddest premises. The FL's and the 2nd ML's chemistry is palpable. Yet when they finally come to terms and forgive themselves and each other, no signs of reconciliation is shown. C'mon show! You failed us on already so many levels, and you couldn't even give us the kiss of the century in the end?

Twenty-Five Twenty-One
After awesome romancing throughout the drama, the FL and ML break up in the end. Who did the FL end up marrying then? Who was the father of the FL's daughter?

Vagabond
The ML fakes his death to get the bad guys and becomes a mercenary. FL sad about his death leaves her Intelligence Agent job and decides to become lobbyist to get the bad guy. We are back in the first scene of the drama where the ML is supposed to snipe, and it the FL. But he kills his partner instead, and the drama ends there.

Vincenzo
The beloved 2nd ML (Han Seo) is shot and killed by his own half-brother. His bromance partner the ML is left heart broken. If somebody should have been sacrificed, it should have been that pigeon, Inzaghi. :rage:@LeftCoastOppa @Ameera Ali

V.I.P.
Emotionless ML cheats on his wife (FL) with a vixen from their office - she's even on the same team. ML and FL later meet up in the rain and we see them walking under their umbrellas never looking back at each other. That's it?!?!? Anti-climatic to say the least.

Wang's Family

This drama makes a 30 year time jump in the last episode, not really explaining what happens to a majority of the characters and majority of the loose ends are never tied up. People had hoped for some character developments and satisfying lessons dished out to the less likeable characters, but we have NONE.

You Who Came from the Stars
Alien and Top Actress fall in love. They live in different dimensions and meet even more seldom than the CLOY couple. The alien will show up for a few minutes when the FL is standing on the red carpet. Talk about long-distance relationship.

Who Are You: School 2015

Surprise OTP in the end.

Temptation of a Wife

"surely isn't it too much that the two-timing saggy faced husband, who cheated on both his wife and mistress until way the end, suddenly in the last few minutes, decided to sacrifice himself and drown with the mistress?" by @maribella

Reply 1988

"Still have trauma. Don't want to talk about it." by Ms. Koko @kokodus

While not all dramas were so bad that the writer actually got banned from the network, some of the endings caused us to want to take a flight to South Korea to have a serious word with the writer.

What  perfect poll especially after that Big Mouth ending

Chingu, I just finished ep 16 today, and it was a disaster. :headbang:

The beginning was so great, but with ep 12 it started going downhill with Big Mouse's reveal.

These writers for me now :unamused:

Imo, School 2015, Yook Sungjae didn't end up with FL lol

Also All round wife, Shim Ji Hoo didn't get married to the student, as was supposed to be, many viewers left the show  because of that lols

I have added School 2015 to the poll (we only have room for a couple of more dramas, so can't add all suggestions I'm afraid).

Feel free to vote!:kiss_wink:

I think they didn't know how to wrap the story up and just couldn't be bothered actually writing the last few episodes :fear:

Still in shock how they wrapped it all up in literally 3 minutes, there's so many plot holes that were never explained, it's actually shocking how awful the ending was, can't get over it. Even recommended this drama to my friends in the beginning saying how good it is :criesariver:

Also, Scarlet Heart ending that will always be the one that still breaks my heart and needs a season 2, that's the one that even years later I will not get over. Beautiful drama but a tragic ending, only that deleted scene gives me hope where he gives her a tissue in the real world that they do eventually meet and hopefully one day there will be a season 2. :please:

Ahh I forgot to click on Memories of the Alhambra as well! That one made no sense.

I would sorta add in Dr. Stranger

Spoiler

(acting is great, but the plot devolves as it goes, and I have no idea what the bad guys or even the FL were trying to do by the end.)

I am still scarred by Alchemy of Souls. I know it's not the end of the whole drama, just the 2/3 mark. BUT STILL.

Spoiler

Plotwise we may get closure and a happy ending, but there is always the risk of the FL actress switch not meshing perfectly. If it works, great. If not...it will always scratch at my insides. In any case, it's the cruelest thing I have EVER seen done to a character (making her finally confess her feelings for this guy, falling asleep, and waking up to find she has just killed him and is turning to stone. Seriously??)

Big Mouth went in a direction I...really don't quite understand at the end? But maybe it's because I don't normally watch a lot of noir...

Jirisan was pure deus ex machina.

Luckily I heard about Vagabond so I stopped two episodes before the end and had some closure before they went off the deep end.

But the worst one to me is Twenty-Five Twenty-One.

Spoiler

Yes, it's realistic not to end up with your teenage crush. But what's NOT realistic is to spend 14 episodes developing way past just a teenage crush, getting through all kinds of big life obstacles together, and then just...walking away? Not to mention giving up the sport you devoted your life to without a second thought and cutting contact with all your friends for no reason. There is not even a sense that the character learned from or even remembered any of those experiences. For me it completely does not work at all, and feels like either the last two episodes are from a completely different drama, or a completely different person soul-shifted into the body of the FL.

Thanks, mods, for umm helping me relive all my Kdrama frustrations with endings, lol.

@partyon I don't remember which show triggered my suggestion, but I am sad you do not have Temptations of a Wife. That was so ridiculous. Of course, revenge dailies with mindboggling endings are a dime a dozen, it's like de rigeur. A lot of people think TOW is a great revenge show, fine, we have different tastes; but surely isn't it too much that the two-timing saggy faced husband, who cheated on both his wife and mistress until way the end, suddenly in the last few minutes, decided to sacrifice himself and drown with the mistress? The icing on the cake was the two of them, the dead lying cheating couple, appeared in the sky as if they were on Mount Olympus looking down on common mortals.

I thought the ending was funny (couldn’t take the drama seriously anyway), but added it to the poll. :kiss_wink:

am still scarred by Alchemy of Souls. I know it's not the end of the whole drama, just the 2/3 mark. BUT STILL.

Chingu, I wouldn’t keep my hopes up with season 2…

:emmm:

The Hong Sisters have a way of butchering all dramas they write. :grimace:

It is better to be prepared for an epic failure ending in this case.

Still hoping we’ll get a barf emoji reaction button on the forum someday for dramas like this. Lol

same as @partyon; I started laughing after temptation of wife ending especially when the cheating couple appeared in the sky. it was hysterical -- now that they are dead, they are good and happy with everyone?

it was a funny drama too -- usually, it is a hot guy the women are fighting for. in this case, it was uncle.

What  perfect poll especially after that Big Mouth ending

So timely!

@partyon Was the writer tired? I don't know what to say.
Superb acting from our two leads, though. Especially from Lee Jong-Suk. As much as I was disappointed by the ending, I wasn't by his acting. Would watch a season 2 if he carries the same intensity, continues to seamlessly switch from innocence to forceful determination.

Spoiler

In the end, he did kill someone, though... So regardless of his reason/his grief over his wife's death, he did switch over to the dark side. In that sense, it is like the cycle continues. The first Big Mouse became so because his daughter was killed by the NFR, like Mi-Ho was.

Also, this is haaaaard: when a drama ending has hurt my heart and brain, I tend to burry it in Forgotten Land so I quickly recover from the trauma. So how will I remember the endings that confused/disappointed me? Wait. Maybe this poll is not so hard after all. If I recognize the title, remember the story, but can't remember the ending... then

ALICE - DIDN'T MAKE IT ON ANY OF THE 3 LISTS???!!!

It was in there yesterday! I promise! But it must have gotten deleted somehow when I edited the poll. As you can see, it was in the description field in the post - so it only got dropped off from the poll by mistake. It’s fixed now!

There's a fun term I learned recently - 용두사미(龍頭蛇尾) yong-du-sa-mi. It means "dragon head snake tail." It's basically describes a thing/situation in which the beginning is awesome, but the end is lame.

And I learned the term when used to describe a k-drama that begins great and the end is bad. So... haha, this is a yong-du-sa-mi poll!

I think a drama's bad ending is the most disappointing when the beginning was so promising and so good. If the drama is kind of blah throughout, it's hard to get too worked up about the ending for a story you're not that invested in.

For me, the yong-du-sa-mi drama is 2521. That one still hurts. Because it was so good and so lovable. I think that one really hurts a lot of people still, because no one seems to even want to talk about it anymore. The viewers have all collectively blocked that one from our mind like PTSD.

Anyway, I do think that there are different types of dragon-to-snake dramas. Sometimes it seems the writer just wrote him/herself into a corner and doesn't know how to end the story, so they pull something out of thin air. Or the story was just misconceived in the first place.

And sometimes - and I think it's what happened in 2521 *AND* Reply 1988 - the show becomes its own wonderous creature that wasn't fully anticipated, so the ending that was planned doesn't fit, but the creators just stick to the original ending anyway.

The OTP realize they can’t be together in either of their countries - so they see each other for a couple of weeks each year on neutral ground. Like Switzerland. And oh, the 2nd ML dies.

Alien and Top Actress fall in love. They live in different dimensions and meet even more seldom than the CLOY couple. The alien will show up for a few minutes when the FL is standing on the red carpet. Talk about long-distance relationship.

kdrama takeaway --  impossible love is more romantic when you don't have to see each other every day or even keep in touch.
