Watch: Jang Keun Suk Is A Homicide Detective Going Up Against Notorious Criminal Heo Sung Tae In Teaser For New Crime Thriller Drama
Coupang Play has shared an action-packed trailer for its new drama “The Bait”!

“The Bait” (previously known as “Chronicle of Crime”) is a crime thriller that follows a lawyer-turned-homicide detective searching for the truth behind unsolved past cases by investigating current crimes. The series marks Jang Keun Suk’s first drama role in five years, and it will also star Heo Sung Tae and Lee Elijah.

Jang Keun Suk stars as Goo Do Han, a detective who is determined to uncover the truth after Noh Sang Cheon, the culprit of South Korea’s biggest fraud case (played by Heo Sung Tae), is named as a suspect in a present-day murder case even though he supposedly died eight years ago.

A new poster previews the upcoming fierce confrontation between Goo Do Han, a righteous detective who will stop at nothing to reveal the truth, and Noh Sang Cheon, a notorious criminal who holds the key clues to a past fraud case and the current murder case. Adding to the curiosity over the upcoming battle betwen the two men is the simple yet intense caption: “He who must catch [the culprit] in order to live vs. he who must die in order to live.”

In the trailer, Noh Sang Cheon is introduced as having committed 5 trillion won (approximately $3.9 billion) worth of fraud, then having reportedly died while on the run, leaving behind thousands of victims crushed by the significant losses they suffered.

However, eight years later, lawyer-turned-detective Goo Do Han is summoned to solve a mysterious case in which the victim claimed that Noh Sang Cheon had come to kill him. Goo Do Han then embarks on a journey to find out if Noh Sang Cheon is indeed dead, who the real culprit of the current murder case is, and what the link is between the past and the current case.
“The Bait” will premiere on January 27 and will air two episodes each week. Part 1 consists of a total of six episodes, and Part 2 will be released in the first half of 2023.

[News]Jang Keun Suk And Lee Elijah Piece Together A Puzzle Leading Them To Heo Sung Tae In “The Bait”
Upcoming Coupang Play series “The Bait” has dropped a new poster and teaser!

“The Bait” is a crime thriller that follows a lawyer-turned-homicide detective searching for the truth behind unsolved past cases by investigating current crimes. The series marks Jang Keun Suk’s first drama role in five years, and it will also star Heo Sung Tae and Lee Elijah. Jang Keun Suk stars as Goo Do Han, a detective who is determined to uncover the truth after Noh Sang Cheon (Heo Sung Tae), the culprit of South Korea’s biggest fraud case, is named as a suspect in a present-day murder case even though he supposedly died eight years ago.

The new poster features detective Goo Do Han, who persistently digs into a murder case, and Cheon Na Yeon (Lee Elijah), a reporter who joins Goo Do Han in uncovering the truth behind the case.
Surrounding the characters like pieces of a puzzle, there are pictures of a bloody murder scene, a note framing a murder on Noh Sang Cheon who is known to have already died, a crowd cheering at someone, and a person engulfed in flames.

dummy.jpeg?s=900x600&e=t

These puzzle pieces are gathered to complete the silhouette of Noh Sang Cheon, who is known to be the worst swindler in crime history. In particular, Noh Sang Cheon’s and Goo Do Han’s faces are attached next to each other, foreshadowing an intense confrontation between the two.

Meanwhile, the second trailer that was released along with the poster previews the main pillars of the story. The clip begins with a scene in which a mysterious assailant appears deep inside a forest and kidnaps someone. After eight years, Noh Sang Cheon, who is known to have died, is named as a suspect in a murder case, and detective Goo Do Han starts digging into the case. When a voice says, “It may not be Noh Sang Cheon who is committing murders right now,” the atmosphere of the trailer takes another turn. The characters take turns omniously stating, “People who deserve to die,” “We all die together,” and “I didn’t kill them,” suggesting that more people besides Noh Sang Cheon are involved in the murder case.
“The Bait” will premiere on January 27 and will air two episodes each week. Part 1 consists of a total of six episodes, and Part 2 will be released in the first half of 2023.

[News] Actor-singer Jang Keun Suk returns after 5 years with crime thriller series 'The Bait/ Decoy'
South Korean actor-singer Jang Keun-suk is coming back after a five-year hiatus as a lawyer-turned-detective who investigates a mysterious murder case in Coupang Play's new crime thriller series "The Bait."

In the show, Jang plays Goo Do-han, who formerly served as a lawyer for wealthy people and now as a detective who follows a murder case. Lee Elijah plays Cheon Na-yeon, a reporter who teams up with him to uncover the truth.

Heo Sung-tae appears as Noh Sang-cheon, who is named as the main suspect of the murder case although he is known to have died eight years ago after being accused of masterminding a massive fraud case.

Jang, who formerly enjoyed massive popularity in Asia with his roles in rom-com dramas, said he chose the crime thriller after the long break to show his new side as an actor.

"I thought (Goo Do-han) would be a new challenge as it breaks my old, predictable image," Jang said in a press conference to promote the series Wednesday. "I grew a mustache and tried to restrain myself to portray a wild man."

fd80c79f0a27d0d40f7e70a6f41ace29.jpg

The 36-year-old actor said five years passed too quickly as he completed his mandatory military service from 2018 to 2020 and had a refreshing period afterwards.

"I didn't know the break would take this long. I treasured the script of 'The Bait' to make the time meaningful," he said.

Heo, who played villains in Netflix series "Squid Game" and the Disney+ series "Casino," said he wants to write an "encyclopedia of villains" with his "unforgettable" character in the new work.

"I tried to control my power. I thought acting would be a challenge as it is an epic tale of Noh Sang-cheon," he said.

The first two episodes of "The Bait" will be available on the streaming platform by e-commerce operator Coupang on Friday. The second part will be released in the first half of this year.

[News] Jang Keun Suk feels ready for his long-anticipated comeback
Though his new character Do-han in the upcoming crime thriller series “Decoy” seems a departure from his previous roles, Jang Keun-suk is certain that he will not disappoint his fans, who have been waiting a long time for his return.

“Time flies. Even I didn’t expect it would be so long before my next project. But I can assure you that ‘Decoy’ was the series, which makes the last five years not in vain. Whenever I visited the on-site shooting location, discussed ways to improve the scenes with actors and staff, I felt alive,” Jang said in a press conference at Megabox Coex in Seoul, Wednesday.

Playing a hard-boiled, aggressive detective for the first time in his 26-year acting career, Jang expressed a mixed bag of emotions.

89c10d50ea946fd60a5e53d3580d64e5.jpg

“‘Decoy’ will be the first series to show my performance in five years. I wanted to challenge myself and show a different side, which is far different from what I have been doing before starting my two-year mandatory military service in 2018,” the actor said.

Jang added that he was concerned about misinterpreting the character and creating Do-han who does not match the stories of “Decoy.” The actor talked over even the small details with the director and screenwriter, from makeup to clothes. Jang said he took additional acting training sessions to hone his performance.

Jang said that the five-year break allowed him to grow both as an actor and a person.

“As an actor, I personally felt a huge catharsis after hearing the public praise me for my role in the 2009 mystery film ‘Where the Truth Lies.’ Many people commented that they did not expect to see a new side from me and my performance as an actor. I wish I can receive this reaction once again with ‘Decoy,’” he said.

“Decoy” is a 12-part series, which centers around the man behind South Korea’s biggest financial fraud case, who dies while in hiding from the victims and police. The story develops as the deceased criminal is named as a suspect in a new serial murder case, eight years after his death.

d9e593bb8d026fc3565d5f397a170a6a.jpg

Jang plays a lawyer-turned-detective, who tries to reveal the truth behind the mysterious case.

When asked whether the series is based on the true stories of con artist Jo Hee-pal, who took about 4 trillion won ($366 billion) from more than 40,000 people in a pyramid scheme played out from 2004 to 2008, director Kim Hong-sun explained that “Decoy” is not based on a specific person or event.

“There were increasing numbers of murder cases in the early 2000s. The screenwriter’s personal experience also played part in our project and we wished to present some of those tragedies throughout the series,” Kim said.

The first two episodes of the 12-part crime thriller will be available Friday on local streaming service Coupang Play. Following that, two episodes each will be released over the next two Fridays.

After a short break, “Decoy” will return with part two in the first half of the year to present the remaining six episodes, according to the streamer.

[News] Jang Keun Suk steps out of his comfort zone with 'The Bait'
Actor Jang Keun-suk said that his small screen return after five years to play the lead role of Ku Do-han in Coupang Play's new original series, "The Bait," was a new challenge in his career to break him out of his comfort zone.

"Since this series is my comeback after a long time, I thought about what I can bring to the role. So I felt deviating from the established image of me by playing Koo Do-han could be a new challenge," he said during a press conference for the series, held in Gangnam District, southern Seoul, Wednesday.

"So I grew my beard and reined in my emotions to create a tough character."

The crime thriller series revolves around Koo (Jang), a detective who used to be a lawyer. He takes a serial murder case linked to a major fraud case from years earlier. As he deepens his investigation into the murder, he finds clues pointing to the prime suspect, notorious con artist No Sang-cheon (Heo Sung-tae), who was believed to have died eight years earlier.

52647634417_13aeac120b.jpg

Jang took some time off from his acting career in 2018 to serve his public service duty as an alternative to mandatory military service, making the legal series "Switch: Change the World," aired earlier in that year, his last work. He said that he took the time to recharge, leading to him feeling the urge to reinvent himself as an actor.

"As an actor, I had the urge to break my own mold. When I starred in the film 'Where the Truth Lies,' people were saying 'I didn't know he was capable of such actions.' And I wanted to feel that catharsis I had at that time," he said.

The 36-year-old, who debuted as a child model at the age of six, said that he took acting training which helped to reignite the passion he had in the earlier phase of his career.

"I've never taken a break from work. So I took the time to do the things I've been wanting to do … And the opportunity to showcase what I've gained and let go of is 'The Bait,'" he said. "I took acting training before starting filming the series and I felt so happy. It reminded me of the excitement, feelings and hope I felt when I was young."

The series is led by director Kim Hong-sun, who led the Netflix series "Money Heist: Korea ― Joint Economic Area." The director shared that the series is based on multiple fraud cases from the early 2000s, rather than being based on one specific case.

52651293642_dba994667e.jpg

"We brought together various fraud cases that happened in the early 2000s. There were also experiences from the writer and few parts from other cases," he said.

Kim added that he felt Jang was the right fit to play the character. "He has such a positive image, especially being dubbed the 'Asian Prince.' But when I met with him, I felt he has become mature and a real adult," he said. "I had no doubt that he can pull off a detective character."

"The Bait" will hit the streaming site on Friday and will release two episodes every week.
