Kim Hye Soo In Talks For Lead Role In Historical Drama

cc8df3035f7449c6891da1cc78226446.jpeg?s=

Jul 12, 2021
by C. Hong

Actress Kim Hye Soo might be taking on her first historical drama in 20 years!

On July 12, entertainment industry sources began reporting that Kim Hye Soo had decided to appear in the tvN drama “Shuroop” (a historical term for “umbrella”).

“Shuroop” is about the conflict within the palace to make the troublemaker princes, who cause nothing but headaches for the royal family, into proper crown princes. There are several modern dramas that have tackled the topic of children’s education, but this drama is described as a “education drama” set in the Joseon Dynasty.

Kim Hye Soo was reportedly cast in the role of Im Hwa Ryung, the mother of the troublemaker princes and the wife of a great king. Instead of having an aura of elegance and grace, Im Hwa Ryung is a prickly, sensitive, and hot-tempered queen. Although she used to have a calm temper, she changed after people kept pushing her buttons. She is a queen who sometimes lets go of her pride and even swears. Every day of her life is full of trials, but she withstands it all for the sake of her children.

A source from tvN stated, “We made the casting offer to Kim Hye Soo and she is currently reviewing it.”

This would be Kim Hye Soo’s first drama since 2020’s “Hyena” and her first historical drama since “Jang Hee Bin” in 2002. She has also been cast in the upcoming Netflix series “Juvenile Judge.”

“Shuroop” will be directed by Kim Hyung Sik (“Secret Door,” “Twenty Again”) and written by Park Ba Ra.

Rookie Hyun-seong Bae becomes the main character of 'Shroop'.

On the January 27th, a representative from the entertainment industry told Sports Chosun, "Bae Hyun-seong will be joining the main character of tvN's new drama 'Shoorup' (written by Park Bar-ra, directed by Kim Hyung-sik)." 'Shuruop' is a drama that draws the royal education solution of troubled princes. In the face of the crisis of the children, it depicts the struggle of an 'extreme heavy war' in which the princes who have thrown away their dignity and have to make the princes who are troubled by the royal family.

Bae Hyun-seong plays Lee Kang, Daegun Seongnam. He is the most dynamic and the most ambivalent, a man who sometimes trembles and is serious at times. He is expected to be portrayed as a macho man and beastly man, with cheeky, sloppy eyes, sad eyes, and pure feelings towards Chungha, but with a cold-hearted character. Here, unlike other princes who grew up in the palace, he is the owner of an unconventional spirit who grew up living the life of grasshoppers outside the palace in Seochon. As Kim Hye-soo is already in discussion with Kim Hye-soo in the middle battle, anticipation is focused on the mother-to-child breathing that she will show with Kim Hye-soo.

Kim Hye Soo Is A Royal Queen Who Holds Charisma Behind Her Gentle Smile In “The Queen’s Umbrella”

by S. Kim

“The Queen’s Umbrella“ has revealed new stills of Kim Hye Soo, who is transforming into a loyal queen!

tvN’s upcoming historical drama follows the conflict that ensues within the palace while trying to educate the troublemaker princes, who cause nothing but headaches for the royal family, and make them into proper crown princes. While focusing on the special palace education system of the top one percent of the Joseon Dynasty, the drama will also draw out a touching and relatable story highlighting the passion of mothers.

The stills feature Kim Hye Soo as queen Im Hwa Ryung, the mother of five troublemaking princes and the wife of a great king. Her sharp eyes suggest a tough life in the palace where she cannot loosen her guard. Kim Hye Soo, who has breathed life into her characters with her own unique aura in each project, raises anticipation for her portrayal of Im Hwa Ryung.

kim-hye-soo.jpeg

Nurturing five princes who are different in personalities, interests, as well as the troubles that they get into, Im Hwa Ryung became the fastest and busiest person in the palace. Due to this, rumors were created in the palace that she is spiteful. However, it is just that her initially beautiful personality become rough in the process of enduring many restless years. She is full of motherly love, and she can give up her pride for the sake of her children.

kim-hye-soo2.jpeg

Kim Hye Soo introduced her character as “a person with strong love and a person who is willing to face the stormy rain to protect the one she loves.” The actress continued, “Im Hwa Ryung follows principles, but she’s not old-fashioned. As a person who is more enlightened than anyone else in that era, Im Hwa Ryung is very intuitive and careful, and she makes more daring and quicker moves than anyone else. On top of that, she is even witty.” Viewers are curious to find out about Im Hwa Ryung’s struggles to protect her children in the middle of the battlefield within the palace where veiled enmity and conspiracies are rampant.

Kim Hye Soo is set to star as queen Im Hwa Ryung, the mother of the troublemaker princes and the wife of a great king. Looking after her troublesome sons all these years has caused Im Hwa Ryung to lose her dignity and she is merely known for being quick on her feet. Every day of her life is full of trials, but she withstands it all for the sake of her children.

Queen dowager and Im Hwa Ryung’s mother-in-law will be portrayed by Kim Hae Sook. She’s a living legend among the concubines and female officials of the palace for helping her child born out of wedlock become a great king. While she is overflowing with immense love for her son, she does not spare even half of that for her grandchildren.

Choi Won Young will play the role of king Lee Ho, Im Hwa Ryung’s husband and the queen dowager’s beloved son. Lee Ho becomes king when the country heads into an excellent era and he has great love for his people. Although he is insecure about becoming king as the son of a concubine, Lee Ho works that much harder to be a great king.

Recently, the cast gathered altogether for the first script reading of “Shuroop. Kim Eui Sung will play Hwang Won Hyung with Ok Ja Yeon portraying Hwang Gwi In and Kim Ga Eun playing Tae So Yong. The princes will be played by Moon Sang Min (Sung Nam), Chani (Eui Sung), Yoo Seon Ho (Gye Sung), Yoon Sang Hyun (Mu Ahn), and Kim Min Ki (Bo Gum).

During the reading, Kim Hye Soo displayed incredible immersion into her role as she showcased her elegance as queen, as well as her chaotic motherly instincts while trying to control her sons. She also previewed the tension between her and Kim Hae Sook as two fiery and passionate mothers in the palace. The dignified aura surrounding Kim Hye Soo and Choi Won Young as king and queen was also evident.

While showing off their individual charms, the princes piqued curiosity with their fierce battle of pride. Kim Eui Sung added tension to the atmosphere with his strategy to threaten the throne. Ok Ja Yeon and Kim Ga Eun play Hwa Ryung’s fellow concubines who kick off a tense and competitive palace education battle.

Producers of “Shuroop” shared, “Even though it was the first time getting in sync, we saw teamwork that felt like we had worked together for a long time. Until the day we greet viewers, we will do our absolute best to prepare a project that makes you feel both the dignity of veterans and the ambition of youth, as actors from various generations have gathered.”

“Shuroop” is set to premiere this October.

The newly released teaser for the upcoming drama offers a brief glimpse of Im Hwa Ryung’s strong but loving character. In contrast to her regal poise, there is a deep warmth to Im Hwa Ryung’s gaze and behavior that proves she’s a mother first and foremost—and that she’s willing to make sacrifices when it comes to her children.

“The Queen’s Umbrella” has unveiled a making video from their first script reading!

tvN’s “The Queen’s Umbrella” is a new historical drama that centers on the special palace education system of the Joseon Dynasty. The drama will follow the conflict within the palace over trying to make proper princes out of its five troublemaking princes, who cause nothing but headaches for the royal family.

The drama stars Kim Hye Soo, Kim Hae Sook, Choi Won Young, Kim Eui Sung, Moon Sang Min, SF9’s Chani, Ok Ja Yeon, Bae In Hyuk, Kim Ga Eun, Yoo Seon Ho, Yoon Sang Hyun, Kim Min Ki, and more.

After the cast and crew greet each other, Kim Hye Soo introduces herself to the camera as queen Im Hwa Ryung, the wife of a great king and the long-suffering mother of five troublemaking sons. She remarks, “Although the time period in the drama is fictional, [Hwa Ryung] is the busiest queen, busiest mother, and the most fierce and active woman of that generation.”

King Lee Ho, who is husband to Im Hwa Ryung, is played by Choi Won Young. He shares, “He holds all the virtues of a Joseon Dynasty king and is a great king who opens an excellent era for Joseon. He has conflict with public servants who wish for a scarecrow king [who is powerless and controlled by others] and is someone who is insecure about being born to a concubine.” In particular, he will quarrel lots with Hwang Won Hyung (Kim Eui Sung).

Queen Dowager and Im Hwa Ryung’s mother-in-law will be portrayed by Kim Hae Sook. She’s a living legend among the concubines and female palace officials for helping her child born out of wedlock become a great king. While she is overflowing with immense love for her son, she does not spare even half of that for her grandchildren and often goes head-to-head with Im Hwa Ryung.

Additional cast members include Ok Ja Yeon as Hwang Gwi In, the No. 1 concubine who is the Queen Dowager’s favorite and a threat to Im Hwa Ryung, and Kim Ga Eun as Tae So Yong, another concubine. The princes will be played by Bae In Hyuk (crown prince), Moon Sang Min (Sung Nam), SF9’s Chani (Eui Sung), Yoo Seon Ho (Gye Sung), Yoon Sang Hyun (Mu Ahn), and Kim Min Ki (Bo Gum).

Regarding why they chose this drama, Kim Hye Soo answered, “It was so fun. It wasn’t simple fun and I thought that the range was very wide. While having the uncanny strength of a historical drama, it really felt very new. I think it’ll become a very fun and refreshing historical drama. It’ll be great if you look forward to it and we will prepare diligently!”

Choi Won Young continued, “What I couldn’t help was that the script was so fun. While these are happenings of a generation I wasn’t able to live in, human greed and one’s love for their children [that are depicted in the drama] are very similar to today’s generation.”
