Premiere Watch: Behind Every Star, Revenge of Others, The First Responders

by missvictrix

We have three premieres to look forward to in the coming week, all of which seem to be on schedule despite abrupt broadcasting changes due to last week’s national mourning. Comedy, revenge, and emergency services await.

Behind Every Star

https://www.dramabeans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/behindeverystar_sr.jpg

Time slot: Monday-Tuesday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Comedy, drama
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: It’s interesting to me that tvN is pushing this drama so hard and fast after Shooting Stars. Granted, I’m sure the two dramas will have very different takes on talent management and PR disasters — and it will make for some interesting comparisons. Behind Every Star stars Lee Seo-jin, Kwak Sun-young, Seo Hyun-woo, and Joo Hyun-young as managers at Method Entertainment. They work thankless and unglamorous jobs, and I can’t wait to see it play out on screen.

TL;DR: Call My Agent! remake, Lee Seo-jin, Kwak Sun-young, chaos of celebrity managers, expect epic cameo

@agenth It's not on my Netflix. :tears: It just has a poster with text on it, and a "Remind Me" option.

But yes, let us know how you like it!

ah same for me...

I thought it was good enough that I am interested in Ep 2. As usual not sure  about the "FL", but let's see how she will develop. I like the guy who played the journalist in Flower of Evil, not really the Marriage Contract guy, but he is not that much of a focus yet.

Behind Every Star: Episodes 1-2

by DaebakGrits

BehindEveryStar1-2_00.jpg

Yet another adaptation has hit dramaland, and while I cannot say if this comedy lives up to its inspiration, it’s off to a solid start — with a lot of name dropping and big name actors cameoing as fictional versions of themselves.

EPISODES 1-2 WEECAP

Any drama that begins with one of its main characters wearing a helmet with one of those little spinning propellers on top immediately has my attention, and that’s exactly the comical note on which our new drama starts. Set in the behind-the-scenes world of talent management, it’s fitting that Behind Every Star opens with KIM JOONG-DON (Seo Hyun-Woo) frantically driving his scooter — helmet propeller spinning wildly in the wind — to intercept a reporter on behalf of actress JO YEO-JUNG (as herself), who has been delayed at her horseback riding lessons.

Although Joong-don is just an agent, he should win an award for acting — or at the very least, lying — because he successfully stalls for time until his absent actress appears for her interview. The reporter is eager to hear about Yeo-jung’s latest casting rumor, and yes, she confirms, she’s up for the leading role in Quentin Tarantino’s latest time-traveling-revenge-porn epic. Yeo-jung is all too happy to gush about the project even though the contract hasn’t been signed. So, of course, the gods of dramatic irony — meaning Tarantino’s representatives — choose that exact moment to text Joong-don that Tarantino is no longer interested in working with Yeo-jung because she’s “too old” for the (rewritten) part — ooof!

Joong-don can’t bring himself to relay the message to Yeo-jung, so he sits on the bad news until WANG TAE-JA (Lee Hwang-eui), the president of Method Entertainment (who is about to depart on an overseas vacation), asks for an update. While most of the agency’s employees react with somber quietness, one young staff member gets scolded for not reading the room and being overly helpful — which leads to her rage-quitting in the middle of the meeting.

Although the young woman’s boss, CHEON JE-IN (Kwak Sun-young), is put out at having yet another newbie quit on her, it turns out to be a serendipitous opportunity for SO HYUN-JOO (Joo Hyun-young), who is looking to start a career as a manager. Having already tried and failed to use her (mysterious) connection with DIRECTOR MA TAE-OH (Lee Seo-jin) to secure a spot on the Method Entertainment staff, she volunteers as tribute when she overhears Je-in complaining that she needs a new fledgling manager on her team ASAP.

Hyun-joo is very wet behind the ears and clearly has a lot to learn, though, and on her first day, she commits a monumental faux pas. She accidentally tells Yeo-jung that she did not get the role in the Tarantino film because of her age — oopsie! To be fair to Hyun-joo, though, Joong-don had ample time to break the news to Yeo-jung himself, but he went out of his way to dodge her calls and hide under a desk when she unexpectedly dropped by the office to locate her wayward manager. So after CHOI JIN-HYUK (Kim Tae-oh) casually spills the tea while giving Hyun-joo a tour of the swanky storage room full of luxury goods, it’s no wonder Hyun-joo thought the actress had already been informed of her rejection.

Yeo-jung handles the situation like a pro, but during the long walk she takes in order to process the bad news, she stumbles upon Joong-don’s lunch “date” with KANG HEE-SUN (Hwang Se-on), the office secretary and a wannabe actress. Now that she’s cornered him, Yeo-jung plays dumb and backs Joong-don into a corner until he’s forced to admit that she didn’t get the part, but he fibs that Tarantino rewrote the script so that the lead character was male. She’s so upset by his lies she claims the trust is lost between them — which is awfully hypocritical of her given her exaggerated horseback riding skills — and she dumps him as her manager.

Behind Every Star: Episodes 3-4

by DaebakGrits

BehindEveryStar3-4_00.jpg

Nothing is what it seems this week as our cast of characters prove to be as skillful in acting (re: lying) as the stars they manage. With the fate of the company still up in the air and everyone trying to save Method Entertainment (or themselves), surely some secrets are bound to be exposed in the process, right?

EPISODES 3-4 WEECAP

After having their president die unexpectedly and leave Method Entertainment to his eager-to-sell widow, our already floundering agents aren’t prepared to handle yet another company curveball — but when it rains, it pours. Joong-don, Tae-oh, and JANG MYUNG-AE (Shim So-young) are appropriately concerned when tax auditor LEE SANG-WOOK (Noh Sang-hyun) shows up and sets up shop in President Hwang’s old office — especially when there’s a pretty good chance that President Hwang used company funds for personal reasons. Je-in, on the other hand, is more than happy to roll out the red carpet for the oh-so-delectable auditor.

One look at Sang-wook and his sexy glasses (yummmmmm), and she eagerly volunteers to keep an eye on him while he digs into Method Entertainment’s financial statements. Her motives are purely unprofessional, of course, and she cranks up her flirting game to an eleven. Her technique is comical in its overt innuendo, but it’s effective. As much as Sang-wook tries to rebuff her — still smarting from her recent rejection via a dating app — the sexual tension between them is so thick, you’d need a chainsaw to cut through it. He may be saying no (for now), but his eyes linger on her in a way that indicates his pride is the only thing holding him back.

Behind Every Star: Episodes 3-4

While Je-in is off playing seductress, Joong-don and Tae-oh are busy trying to sign mother-and-daughter-in-law duo KIM SOO-MI and SEO HYO-RIM (as themselves) to the same drama production. At first, the actresses are eager to sign on with the project, but then they both intentionally tank their meeting with the screenwriter. Hyo-rim has second thoughts about working on a drama with her mother-in-law, feeling extremely pressured to live up to her expectations, and Soo-mi is tired of being typecast as characters whose only defining trait is their maternal connection to another character.

The screenwriter is willing to give them both a second chance because she believes their real-life dynamic will translate well to her drama, but neither Soo-mi nor Hyo-rim is a fan of her interpretation of their personal relationship. Things get a little violent, and — for the second time — the screenwriter decides she doesn’t want to work with either of them. On the bright side, the whole situation mended the broken fences between mother and daughter-in-law. However, they are less happy with Tae-oh when they find out he manipulated them in order to sign both of them to the same drama and — therefore — make twice the money.

Behind Every Star: Episodes 5-6

by DaebakGrits

BehindEveryStar5-6_00.jpg

Everyone is mad at someone this week, as both platonic and romantic relationships hit potholes and go skidding off into ditches. While many find reconciliation, others aren’t as lucky, and they end up either the sleeping on the couch or ugly crying tears of regret.

EPISODES 5-6 WEECAP

We jump right into our celebrity cameos this week and join actor PARK HO-SAN and actress OH NA-RA (as themselves) on the set of (what I imagine to be) a Mr. Sunshine spin-off — I see you iconic Glory Hotel. Unfortunately, the ill-fated love story between a wealthy heiress and a rickshaw driver may never see the light of day because Ho-san and Na-ra’s constant bickering is delaying the filming schedule and driving the director bonkers. Je-in and Joong-don arrive on set to diffuse the situation, but their placating, babysitter-like methods don’t work on the actors, whose beef with each other apparently originated during the filming of My Mister.

Hee-sun is also on set, cast as a maid who shares a scene with Ho-san’s character. When Ho-san agrees to run lines with her, she suppresses her inner fangirl and stuns him with her no-holds-barred interpretation of the character. But after her scene is cut from the filming schedule, she worries that she failed to impress Ho-san with her acting abilities. Joong-don assures her that it’s common for scenes to get cut — sometimes even during editing — but honestly, with the way she got up in Ho-san’s face, I was half expecting Ho-san to have requested the scene be axed because he feared being upstaged by a newbie.

BehindEveryStar5-6_02.jpg

Je-in and Joong-don stay overnight near the filming location so they can coach Ho-san and Na-ra through their (hopefully) passionate kiss scene the next day, but Je-in finds an unexpected guest in her hotel room: Sang-wook. The man jumped through some crazy hoops to locate Je-in and gain access to her room, and while he waited for her to arrive, he helped himself to a bubble bath — like a freaking serial killer.

WTF, y’all? Last week, Je-in’s sexual harassment was portrayed as humorous flirting, and now Sang-wook’s stalking and invasion of privacy is being romanticized as overzealous puppy love. Would I be giving the writers too much credit if I assumed that this gender-reversed portrayal of toxic traits is actually an intentional commentary on romantic tropes? Or are we simply supposed to take their courtship at face value?
