larus
Behind Every Star: Episodes 7-8 by DaebakGrits Both the company and our agents’ personal lives are in chaos, so it’s almost a relief when a new boss steps up to take control and put forth fresh and innovative ideas. But is he actually Method Entertainment’s savior? Or will he destroy everything our agents have been striving to protect? EPISODES 7-8 WEECAP There’s a proverb that states “the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know,” and in the case of Behind Every Star, Tae-oh is the devil everyone knows — for the most part. This week we saw a softer side to Tae-oh’s character, and while I’m still not his fan, I did feel a little twinge of sympathy at the sight of him laying in bed, unable to fall asleep at his new bachelor pad. His separation from his wife has triggered more than insomnia, and his regrets seem to have softened and humbled him a tad bit. He’s making an effort to spend more time with Hyun-joo, and his suggestion that they reveal their father-daughter relationship to their coworkers indicates that the time he’s spending with her isn’t just because he’s lonely and feeling adrift without his “real” family by his side. It’s Hyun-joo, though, who decides they should keep the true nature of their relationship a secret because she’s worried about how the news will affect their professional relationships. Tae-oh may be making some progress with Hyun-joo, but Method Entertainment is still a sinking ship. Without Eun-ha’s family money to finance Tae-ho’s ambition, he can’t swoop in to save the day — not officially, at least. Unofficially, he remains seated in the captain’s chair and tries to keep the company afloat by making drastic budget cuts — starting with employee salaries. Ahhhhh, there’s the devil we all know and love to hate. As you can imagine, the (supposedly temporary) pay reductions don’t go over well with the staff, and without much incentivizing his loyalty, Jin-hyuk decides to accept a position at a rival company and burn bridges on his way out. Too bad the offered promotion was rescinded when the other company realized that he wasn’t the Jin-hyuk that they were looking to hire. At least he managed to eat his words — literally — and dispose of his scathing tell-all resignation letter before Joong-don read it. Jin-hyuk isn’t the only one whose loyalty to the company is waning, as we see with the first of this week’s celebrity cameos. Tae-oh’s marriage troubles and company woes are reflected in his management of married musical theater actors KIM SO-HYUN and SON JUN-HO (as themselves). When So-hyun fears that she was caught hugging a male friend that Jun-ho had forbid her from seeing, Tae-oh advises her to be honest with her husband, a sign that Tae-oh has matured and learned from his past mistakes. Unfortunately, the new leaf he’s turned over does not undo all the wrongs of his past, such as the fact that he helped Jun-ho hide his failed investments from So-hyun. So even though the couple eventually reconciles, So-hyun no longer trusts Tae-oh as her manager. She and Jun-ho leave Method Entertainment and sign a new contract with Star Media. Meanwhile, Je-in visits her rural hometown to accept an award for being a distinguished and successful member of their community. At the ceremony, she’s reunited with KOO HAE-JUN (Heo Sung-tae), who had a very obvious crush on Je-in when they were younger. In the present, he’s an extremely successful business man who invented the very dating app Je-in has been using. When they cross paths again, Je-in sees dollar signs — not hearts — and a possible investor for Method Entertainment. She invites Hae-jun to a nearby filming location where one of her actresses is shooting a movie. On set, it quickly becomes apparent that Hae-jun has absolutely zero understanding of the entertainment industry. He tries to be helpful and loan out his car to the film crew so that their schedule won’t be delayed while they try to fix the broken stunt vehicle, but Hae-jun doesn’t take kindly to the fact that his generosity is rejected. larus
Behind Every Star: Episodes 9-10 by DaebakGrits This week our agents are pitted against the Big Bad Businessman as they set out to prove that their experience with talent management is superior to his profit-driven strategies. But does anyone really care about Method Entertainment’s internal drama when we have some of our most internationally recognized Hallyu cameos to date? EPISODES 9-10 WEECAP After Myung-ae’s departure from Method Entertainment (and seemingly the drama), life and business move forward at the company. Only Hyun-joo dwells on the senior agent’s absence for longer than 15 seconds — but guilt will do that to a person. She feels responsible for Myung-ae’s forced retirement, so when the time comes for the staff to let Myung-ae’s clients know that they are terminating their contracts, Hyun-joo volunteers to deliver the bad news. It’s a task no one else wants to take on, but Hyun-joo does it to take responsibility for the role she played in Myung-ae’s termination. There might also be some self-imposed punishment going on, too, because it’s not easy for her to look into the eyes of Myung-ae’s former clients and tell them that they are no longer wanted. It’s so difficult, in fact, that when she reaches the last actor on her list, she makes one last ditch effort to see if she can sign him as her personal client, but Sunny quickly rejects the idea. He doesn’t make them money. And money is at the forefront of everyone’s minds this week because Hae-jun is slashing budgets in areas that emphasize his complete lack of experience in the entertainment industry. The senior agents gather to convince him he should leave the management decisions to them, but Hae-jun rebuts by issuing a challenge. If Tae-oh, Je-in, and Joong-don can bring him a significant win within the next week, he will turn the day-to-day management over to them. Otherwise, they will be seeing more budget cuts — starting with contract terminations for the actors who haven’t been securing gigs. (Insert meaningful camera shot of Hee-sun here.) Luckily, all three of them are already in the early stages of securing a major deal for Method Entertainment. Tae-oh has proposed a joint production to the president of SY Pictures, Je-in has been courting model-turned-actress JOO AH-HYUN (Kim Ah-hyun), and Joong-don’s client KIM JOO-RYUNG (as herself) is on the verge of being cast for an extremely popular reality television show produced by NA PD (as himself). Unfortunately, nothing goes according to plan for our senior agents. The biggest challenge Tae-oh faces is keeping his deal with SY Pictures on the down-low until it’s finalized so he can later shove it in Hae-jun’s face. Seems simple, but — as usual — his personal life is imploding. Hyun-joo’s mom SO JEONG-HEE (Kim Young-ah) is in town, and she insists on having lunch with Hyun-joo and Tae-oh. The situation gets more complicated when Eun-ha shows up at Method Entertainment, looking for Tae-oh while he’s out of the office at said lunch. It’s unclear just how far things escalated between Tae-oh and Eun-soo after last week’s off camera kiss, but Eun-soo freaks out when she’s faced with Tae-oh’s wife. Normally, her level of panic would indicate that she slept with Tae-oh, but Eun-soo is also the type of person to make a mountain out of a molehill, especially in affairs pertaining to Tae-oh. So maybe they stopped at kissing? Regardless of the extent of Tae-oh’s “on-a-break” infidelity, Eun-soo tries to avoid Eun-ha by claiming she’s running late for her lunch date with Hyun-joo and her mother — oblivious to the fact that Eun-ha would be very interested in meeting Jeong-hee. As you can imagine, this leads to a very awkward lunch between Tae-oh and all the women in his life — minus Eun-soo who was shooed away. Eun-ha and Jeong-hee are extremely civil to one another, so much so that it makes Tae-oh uncomfortable when Jeong-hee willingly gives her phone number to Eun-ha. Afterwards, though, Eun-ha and Tae-oh have another fight, and she formally asks for a divorce. more https://www.dramabeans.com/2022/12/behind-every-star-episodes-9-10/

larus
Behind Every Star: Episodes 11-12 (Final) by DaebakGrits Our peek into the behind the scenes lives of talent wranglers — I mean, managers — has come to an abrupt and unsatisfactory end. It may be fitting for this star-studded story to wrap up with an elaborate award show, but it seems unlikely that this particular drama will walk away with many accolades — or a second season. EPISODES 11-12 WEECAP Let’s jump right into the beginning of the end, with Hyun-joo and Tae-oh dealing with the aftermath of having their personal connection revealed to the company. Surprisingly, Tae-oh keeps his job because Hae-jun claims Tae-oh’s experience and expertise are indispensable and integral to his future plans of expanding Method Entertainment into a production company. Hyun-joo, on the other hand, is the source of office gossip among the no-name background characters, but her close co-workers are copacetic with her birth secret. Well, that is until Hae-jun appoints Hyun-joo as the manager of his new team even though she didn’t apply for the position. Supposedly, despite her inexperience and numerous screw ups, she demonstrated that she has a particular set of skills that make her the right person for the job. (Okaaaaaay…) Jin-hyuk, who actually interviewed for the position, is understandably miffed, but considering we’ve only ever seen him complain about the mound of paperwork on his desk, I’m not so confident he’s more qualified. He seems to think he is, though, and he views Hyun-joo’s appointment as a massive betrayal. He can’t believe her — despite her unwavering support for him throughout his application process — when she says that she didn’t use her connections to snag the promotion for herself, so he has an overly dramatic hissy-fit and precedes to ice out Hyun-joo. Hyun-joo tries to turn down the new job because she doesn’t feel like she deserves it, but Hae-jun tells her to either accept the responsibility or hit the road. Unable to handle the social ostracizing and the feeling that she doesn’t belong, Hyun-joo packs her bags and returns to Busan. Hyun-joo’s departure from Method Entertainment coincides with Myung-ae’s reinstatement — although the two events are unrelated. You see, Myung-ae’s former client LEE SOON-JAE (as himself) started experiencing bouts of memory loss as a side effect of his recent stroke, and during one particularly long episode, he forgets that Myung-ae is no longer his agent. Soon-jae refuses to work until she’s by his side, and with the film’s investor lurking around the set, just waiting to pull the plug on the production, Hae-jun eats some humble pie and rehires Myung-ae. He also puts her in charge of talent and casting. I applauded Myung-ae’s triumphant return to Method Entertainment — especially Sunny’s plant-based bribe to get back on Myung-ae’s good side — but these scenes really emphasized how underutilized Myung-ae’s character was throughout the run of this drama. For a character that Hyun-joo once dubbed the “emotional anchor” of Method Entertainment, Myung-ae deserved better than having the most interesting aspect of her backstory (her past affair with President Hwang) casually tossed in the final hours like an afterthought. Not to mention, it seems like a large part of her return was so she could play the trope of the wise old woman, giving cryptic life advice to her younger peers and waxing poetic about regrets. more https://www.dramabeans.com/2022/12/behind-every-star-episodes-11-12-final/

larus
[2022 Year in Review] Year of the unexpected by quirkycase This was an odd drama year for me. There were some dramas I enjoyed, but not many stuck with me afterward or made a strong impression. Going back through the dramas I watched this year, I realized that despite feeling somewhat lackluster about the dramas overall, there were elements of those dramas that did make a distinct impression – some in a good way, others not so much. While the specifics might differ for each of us, I’m pretty sure we all had drama experiences this year that didn’t quite go as expected. So for fun, here are my entirely personal top drama double takes for 2022. Making talent agent life boring – Behind Every Star A drama about talent agents where we get a behind-the-scenes look at the bustling and glamorous entertainment industry? Surely, that’ll be exciting or at the very least interesting. Think again, because this drama was a snooze fest. If it had been longer than 12 episodes, I don’t think I would’ve managed to finish it. I’m not entirely sure why it was so boring, but somehow neither the work nor the agents were particularly engaging. The drama felt cold and lifeless, pretty much the opposite of what I’d signed up for. https://www.dramabeans.com/2022/12/2022-year-in-review-year-of-the-unexpected/
