Are Lee Seon-gyun and Moon Chae-won siblings in 'Beopjeon'? Birthday party with cone hats

SBS's new Friday-Saturday drama "Beopjeon" (written by Kim Won-seok/directed by Lee Won-tae/produced by Red Nine Pictures), which will premiere on January 6, 2023, is a thrilling revenge drama with "money merchant" Eun-yong and "legal technician" Joon-kyung who fight against the cartels of "law" and "money." Writer Kim Won-seok, who showed meticulous writing skills with the drama "Queen's Classroom" and "Descendants of the Sun," and director Lee Won-tae, who showed his own beauty with the movie "Villain Exhibition" and "Captain Kim Chang-soo," will join forces, and this acting lineup is considered the best in 2023.

In the drama, Lee Sun-kyun plays Eun-yong, a troublemaker who visited a juvenile detention center as a child and who became a huge capitalist, and Moon Chae-won plays Park Joon-kyung, a former prosecutor who took an elite course. The two, who have been walking a completely different path since childhood, build a strong relationship after their first accidental meeting, and they are already together like family members who rely on each other.

In this regard, Lee Sun-kyun and Moon Chae-won are seen having a good time with their faces constantly smiling. In the drama, Eun-yong (Lee Sun-kyun) and Park Joon-kyung (Moon Chae-won) celebrate the birthday of Park Joon-kyung's mother, Yoon Hye-rin (Kim Mi-sook). The two put on cute cone hats, put candles on the cake, and sing a birthday song together. The three then put their arms around each other's shoulders and burst into laughter as they enjoy the game on the DDR board, a game in their memories.

However, Eun-yong and Park Joon-kyung, who seemed to be together forever, meet again after 10 years of unexpected separation. Attention is being paid to the decisive event that will make Eun-yong and Joon-kyung "on the same side" once again, and the difficult journey the two will take.

On the other hand, Lee Sun-kyun and Moon Chae-won showed enthusiastic enthusiasm for the work by matching their lines and analyzing the script whenever they had time. Thanks to this, they presented excellent interpretation and acting skills that smoothly express the epic story that goes back and forth between the past and the present, and is leading the admiration of the "perfectly customized casting" from the production team at the scene.

The production team said, "Every time, scenes that can be made are being created because of Lee Sun-kyun and Moon Chae-won," adding, "Please pay attention to the two people's relentless moves that will confront the huge evil of the cartel of law and money."

Meanwhile, SBS's new Friday-Saturday drama "Beobjjan" will premiere at 10 p.m. on January 6, 2023. / / hsjssu@osen.co.kr [Picture] Red Nine Pictures

Here's an interview with the director. One of his movies was screened at the Cannes, although it did not enter into competition. This would be his first time directing a drama.

Director of 'Beopjeon' "Lee Seon-kyun has everything... I thought that this is why Moon Chae-won is called 'Moon Chae-won'"

사진: 레드나인 픽쳐스 제공

Director Lee Won-tae of SBS' 'Beopjeon' told the story of the birth of 'Beopjeon' full of passion and strong confidence in the work.

SBS' new Friday-Saturday drama 'Beopjeon' (played by Kim Won-seok, directed by Lee Won-tae), which will be broadcast at 10:00 pm on Friday, January 6, 2023, is a 'money dealer' Eun-yong and 'law' fighting against the cartel of 'law' and 'jeon'. It is an exhilarating revenge play of ‘technician’ Joon-kyung. The appearance of those who refuse to be silent in front of incompetent and unjust power and fiercely confront them in their own way is expected to provide a thrilling thrill and catharsis.

Above all, 'Bopjeon' is directed by Lee Won-tae, who boasted a bold mise-en-scène with the films 'The Bad Guy' and 'Captain Kim Chang-soo', and writers Kim Won-seok, who showed meticulous writing skills with the dramas 'The Queen's Classroom' and 'Descendants of the Sun', and Lee Seon-kyun-Moon Chae-won. -Kang Yoo-seok-Park Hoon-Kim Hong-pa and other acting lineups are raising curiosity with the fresh spirit of harmony. In this regard, I heard directly from director Lee Won-tae, the head of 'Beopjeon', the story behind the production of 'Beopjeon' and his thoughts ahead of the first broadcast.

Q1. I'm curious about the background of planning the drama 'Beopjeon'.

As a director, the topic I am most interested in is 'social ills and human irrationality'. When I first encountered the project of 'Beopjeon', I liked it because it was a story about 'money' and 'power', as it was in line with the theme consciousness pursued as a director. 'Beopjeon' is set in modern Korean society, but in fact, it talks about the fundamental theme of human desire and the human world of all times and places. So, even though there were various drama proposals with various themes at the time, I ended up choosing 'Beopjeon'.

Q2. 'Beopjeon' is also director Lee Won-tae's first drama work. Are there any differences from the movie?

While going through changes in the times and the social environment of 'diversification of platforms and media', including OTT, I was always thinking of expanding the field without being bound by the style of film. If a movie is like a substance that concentrates the theme and characters in two hours, the process of conceiving, developing, and ending the entire story in a drama is long, and the budget and time are less than that of a movie, so the director has to make choices. There were many moments. It is true that I feel sorry for the things I gave up artistically in this process, but I made the best decision within the rationally given conditions moment by moment.

Q3. How was the location work in Mongolia?

For the week-long filming, we prepared meticulously by holding a video conference with the Mongolian local staff about two months in advance. The most difficult thing during filming was that, in my eyes, most of them were just vast grasslands. Even when the space is different, the picture doesn't look very different, so it was not easy to decide which space best fits the scenario. And I couldn't bring a lot of shooting equipment and lighting equipment, so I set up the equipment the way I used to shoot about 20 years ago and took most of the scenes. I put the jimmy house on the truck bed and shot the horse running through the bumpy dirt meadow. However, the picture came out as good as the one taken with the shooting car. It was difficult, but it was also fun, and I think the results came out well enough because of the experienced and skilled staff.

Q4. I wonder what, if any, you paid the most attention to or worried about while directing 'Beopjeon'.

Let's not lose sight of the theme of the story, let's not lose sight of the ideal vision of law and justice. If, while developing a drama, you become engrossed in the incident, lose consciousness of the subject matter, and end up in vain, the work eventually becomes a failure regardless of viewership ratings. So I always paid attention to the whole story and the episode-by-episode story, and to make sure that each scene and character served the theme well. And what I always kept in mind was to do the most reasonable shooting. I always thought hard and made the best choice to make the best video under the given conditions.

Q5. I am curious about the reason for casting actors Lee Sun-gyun and Moon Chae-won and how satisfied they were.

What the two actors have in common is that they are good at acting enough to nod their heads. The exclamations of “Wow, that’s great” came out naturally every time they entered the screen. First of all, actor Lee Seon-kyun, as a person who has both a free-spirited human side and the status of a global star, created the character Eun-yong very well. There was an image of Eun-yong that I had imagined while meeting and talking with actor Lee Sun-gyun several times before filming, but that image was shattered at the same time as the first filming in Mongolia. Lee Seon-kyun's Eun-yong was much freer, unstoppable, brave, and bigger than I thought. He is an actor who has everything: a face that easily crosses between good and evil, a unique deep voice, and acting skills that can pull off anything.

Actress Moon Chae-won thought, “Ah, this is why Moon Chae-won is doing Moon Chae-won.” In a word, it is called 'immortality'. The clear and perfect pronunciation and the dialogues pronounced like that contain the basic emotions of Joon-kyung in the play, the emotions required by each scene and dialogue, without overflowing or lacking. He is an actor who learns really well and prepares hard. He is an actor who calculates, studies, and accomplishes everything without wasting a single line or breath.

Q6. How is the breathing between the director and the actors on set?

I think of an actor as a complete artistic body. A character is completed by applying a role in the play to the original personality accumulated throughout life, but if the director intervenes in this in advance, the original color of the actor is damaged. Once the casting decision has been made, the actor is left alone. I think the more time you spend thinking alone, the better the character will be created.

And when I meet an actor on set, I make him do the most natural way to act, and set up the camera and lighting according to the actor's motion. Occasionally, when an actor acts in a different way than I thought, we discuss it on the spot, and as colleagues, we check and match each other's thoughts. There is rarely any dissonance or failure in this process. This is because the lead actor already has the insight and ability of a protagonist.

Q7. While dealing with the worldview unique to 'Bopjjeon', I wonder what was the most worrying thing.

Since the content is not easy, I thought it should be visually easy to see. Even if you don't know the terminology or the development process in the play in detail, I worked on the script to make it easy to follow who is the enemy, who is on our side, what is the purpose of their fight, and how the story flows. And in order to maintain interest, we tried to add visual points such as action scenes, car chasing scenes, montages, and intuitive pictures using CG in the middle of the play, as well as a relatively large amount of music. I tried to make aesthetically high-quality pictures in every scene as much as possible.

Q8. Do you have a message you want to convey through 'Beopjeon'?

'Beopjeon' has a clear message within the revenge play genre. The world is not good, but if we know the absurdity of power and money, we can protect ourselves and live. Even if you can't do it, you should at least know the truth of the absurdity, I think this is it. Machiavelli said this. “If you don’t want to go to hell, you must first know the road to hell.”

Q9. Before the first broadcast of 'Beopjeon', what would be a point to watch?

The charm of 'Beopjeon' is the clear confrontation between good and evil. Eun-yong (Lee Sun-kyun) - Park Joon-kyung (Moon Chae-won) - Jang Tae-chun (Kang Yoo-seok) and Hwang Ki-seok (Park Hoon) - Myeong Chairman (Kim Hong-pa)'s fight will progress and it will be interesting to see how it will end. 'Beopjeon' is a heavy story dealing with the absurdity of the world, but it is also an action drama led by a charming character named Eun-yong. I hope you will join Eun-yong in a bout to fight against the evils of the world.

Lee Seon-kyun masterminds a stock market heist in Payback

by Jenzy

Strap in boys, it’s revenge o’clock in the upcoming SBS thriller Payback. Starring Lee Seon-kyun (Dr. Brain) and Moon Chae-won (Flower of Evil), the new teaser gives us an action-packed glimpse into what we can expect: cartel bosses, vigilante justice, and lots satisfying beatdowns.

Lee Seon-kyun plays Eun Yong, a former juvenile convict turned capitalist’s capitalist. For the past ten years, he’s been grinding at the millstone overseas, amassing large amounts of wealth with the plan of returning back to Korea and enacting his revenge on the corrupt system that put innocents like him in jail. His plan? To use his stock market knowledge and business savvy to take down the mother of cartels and the paid-off prosecution office.

By his side is Park Joon-kyung (Moon Chae-won), a former top prosecutor turned disillusioned army judge. While she used to believe in using the strong arm of the law to apprehend criminals, after an incident when prosecutors — under the orders of a crime boss — pinned the death of her mother on her, she realized that the only way to catch the bad guys would be to become one herself. She and Eun Yong also share some kind of history from ten years ago, before he left overseas, so his return to Korea opens up questions as to what their relationship will look like now he’s back. Brother-sister? Partners-in-crime? Something more? Asking for a friend.

Of course, no one said taking down a criminal organization would be easy, especially when you have the objectively terrifying Kim Hong-pa (Casino) playing your crime boss, Myung In-joo. Not to mention when you factor in the money-hungry and amoral head prosecutor Hwang Ki-seok — played by Park Hoon (Big Mouth) — in his pocket.

It’s in this lion’s den where the last member of our main cast, Kang Yoo-seok (I Haven’t Done My Best Yet), plays the burgeoning rookie prosecutor and Eun Yong’s nephew, Jang Tae-choon. Without any top school or affluent family connections to his name, Tae-choon is desperate to prove that he has what it takes to be a top prosecutor, but the question is, will his ambitions lead him to follow the powerful Ki-seok? Or will he join his uncle in his fight for vigilante justice?

In the same vein as the previous teaser, this teaser is 40 seconds of a nonstop onslaught of action and character info. We start on Eun Yong executing his stock market manipulation scheme, telling his army of computer hackers that this task will require perfect cooperation from all of them.

We then cut to Joon-kyung being questioned by the police for her role in the stock market manipulation, with Ki-seok looming behind the glass. He tells Tae-choon in another scene that the world of idealistic justice only exists in the courtroom: “Out here, this is reality.” Concerningly, Ki-seok appears to have taken the young Tae-choon under his tutelage, leading him out to see the reporters while Joon-kyung threateningly tells Eun Yong in the background, “Anyone who stands with Hwang Ki-seok is my enemy. Whether it’s your nephew or anyone else.”

In the next scenes, we’re shown why In-joo isn’t a foe to scoff at. From hitting Eun Yong with a car, to threatening to burn a tied up captive with an iron, to stowing away stacks of money in safes, our crime boss is determined to keep his empire together. But our hero is unfazed by the challenge, telling Tae-choon, “You can’t fight someone like In-joo through the law. I’m a businessman. I’m going to use money, not the law, to buy out the entirety of Korea’s prosecution office.”

In our last set of scenes, Eun Yong is in a prison suit, being escorted to his jail cell, and in voiceover we hear the gauntlet being thrown between our two power players, with In-joo challenging Eun Yong, “So you’re determined to take this to the very end?” and Eun Yong responding, “Just don’t touch my family.”

My goodness, I’m pretty sure that was the most information dense teaser I’ve ever covered for a drama, but it absolutely delivered on the epic revenge caper vibes with all the moving pieces and the ominous villains. Looking forward to this!

Haha yup. B)

Also, it’s sad to see Joon-kyung’s mom in the birthday party still cuts, knowing that she’ll die at some point. It looks like there were happy times before. I wonder if she took in Eun Yong after juvie, and if she’s the one that was unfairly sacrificed, the one that Eun Yong was always grateful for.

Writer of 'Beopjeon': "I like Lee Seon-gyun's humane warmth and Moon Chae-won's intelligent neatness.”

30000814201_500.jpg

Writer Kim Won-seok told the story of the birth of 'Beopjeon', which he struggled with for 7 years.

SBS' new Friday-Saturday drama 'Beopjeon' (written by Kim Won-seok, directed by Lee Won-tae), which will be broadcast for the first time on January 6 next year, is an exhilarating revenge story about a 'money dealer' Eun-yong (Lee Sun-kyun) and 'legal engineer' Joon-kyung (Moon Chae-won) fighting against the cartel of 'law' and 'money'.' The appearance of those who refuse to remain silent in front of incompetent and unjust power and confront passionately in their own way is expected to provide a thrilling thrill and climax of catharsis.

Above all, 'Beopjeon' is attracting attention as a work that announced the return after seven years of writer Kim Won-seok, who boasted delicate writing skills in a dense worldview in the dramas 'The Queen's Classroom', 'Descendants of the Sun', and 'Man to Man'.

Regarding the longest break since his debut, writer Kim Won-seok said, "I just spent my time writing the script diligently."

I wanted to talk about the justice of 'Beopjeon', revealing the secret story of the story’s birth and intention. Kim Won-seok said about the points he cared and worried about the most while writing 'Beopjeon', "It was easy to write and develop with a sense of speed. Iwas moved. I wanted to create a story that could not be found in reality, which we all hoped for, and where 'our side', which is just with common sense, wins."

30000814199_500.jpg

In addition, writer Kim Won-seok expressed 100% satisfaction with the casting of Lee Sun-kyun and Moon Chae-won in the role of Eun-yong and Park Jun-kyung in the work, respectively.  Writer Kim Won-seok expressed his affection by saying, “I really liked the human warmth of actor Lee Sun-gyun and the intelligent neatness of actor Moon Chae-won,” and, “They are actors with clear charms, so it is a pleasure to see their ensemble.”

Also, about the formation of actors with their own colors, such as Kang Yoo-seok, Park Hoon, and Kim Hong-pa, he expressed overflowing confidence in the casting of 'Beopjeon', saying, "It was only perfect because characters with strong personalities met with attractive actors."

Lastly, Kim Won-seok said about the message he wanted to leave to viewers through 'Beopjeon', "Even though despair is cowardly and hope is pitiful, I hope that 'Beopjeon' is a drama that approaches viewers with excitement. Follow our side. We are smart and trustworthy.” It’s a powerful word, raising expectations for the birth of an 'exhilarating revenge play' that will pierce the the New Year's home theater.

'Beopjeon' will be broadcast for the first time at 10 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 2023, following 'The First Responders.’

The recent casting news surprised me. I had thought they had wrapped up filming, but here they are still hiring new cast members and having food trucks sent to filming locations. For a 12-episode drama, they seem to take quite a long time to film. I hope this means a great product at the end.

These food trucks confirm reports that Prime Video will be carrying this drama in South East Asia. Does this usually mean PV will also be the platform for us in the West?

So far we’ve seen an umbrella trope, a childhood (teenager) connection trope, and now LSK running. Let’s see if they deliver on these.  I haven’t seen any of the director or screenwriter’s other works, but I wonder if they sometimes include romance, or if they prefer to usually focus on other themes.

He really does have great hair. Whoever styles LSK for this drama should be hired permanently for his future projects.

LSK and MCW will be attending the SBS Awards Ceremony on 12/31, probably as presenters.

Watch: Lee Sun Gyun Isn’t Afraid Of Danger In New “Payback” Teaser

Get ready for all the action of “Payback” with SBS’s newest teaser for the upcoming drama!

“Payback” tells the thrilling revenge story of those who risk everything to fight a money cartel that has colluded with the law. The drama will give viewers both thrills and catharsis through its portrayal of those who refuse to remain silent as they fight against incompetent and unjust authority in their own way. Lee Sun Gyun will star as reclusive money dealer Eun Yong, and Moon Chae Won will star as Army Major Park Joon Kyung, an elite judicial officer.

The new teaser, which highlights the connections between the characters and is full of thrilling action scenes, starts with Eun Yong entering a prison while dressed up in a suit. Jang Tae Choon (Kang You Seok), a criminal prosecutor who is also Eun Yong’s nephew, can be heard asking his uncle, “So you’re both loan sharks, but you’re different from Chairman Myung?”

Eun Yong then enters the prison cell where Myung In Joo (Kim Hong Pa), the godfather of the Myeongdong private loan market, is already imprisoned. The chairman grins at Eun Yong as he passes by his cell, and tension climbs as Eun Yong glares back.

Later, Eun Yong is confronted by mysterious figures in the elevator, and a three-on-one fight ensues. Amidst shots of other brawls breaking out in the prison between inmates, Eun Yong says, “Every high place is dangerous. But you need to get used to the danger in order to rise up.”

The trailer ends with Eun Yong reaching out a hand towards Jang Tae Choon, saying, “Now take my hand. I’ll make you the top prosecutor in all of Korea.”

A member of the “Payback” production team commented, “In the third teaser, we tried to capture the agony, choice, and conflict between the characters in an impactful way as they come to face the biggest incidents of the storyline. The incidents [in this drama] are unending and complex, so please look forward to ‘Payback,’ which will capture your attention on the small screen with its solid narrative and lethal vibe.”
