Namgoong Min, Kim Ji Eun, And Choi Dae Hoon’s Goals Couldn’t Be More Different In Fun Posters For “One Dollar Lawyer”

SBS’s upcoming drama “One Dollar Lawyer” has introduced its three leads through fun character posters resembling magazine covers!

“One Dollar Lawyer” is a new drama starring Namgoong Min as Cheon Ji Hoon, a lawyer who only charges an attorney’s fee of 1,000 won (approximately $0.72) despite his renowned skills. A hero who comes to the rescue of clients without money or connections, Cheon Ji Hoon isn’t afraid of facing off against the rich and powerful who use expensive lawyers to escape the law.

Cheon Ji Hoon’s magazine cover proudly declares, “I’ll defend you fruitfully for a fee of 1,000 won!” Describing him as “a true hero of this day and age,” the headlines reveal that he’ll sincerely do his utmost “even for a lawsuit that doesn’t bring in any money or a case that has little chance of being won.”

Meanwhile, Kim Ji Eun will star in the drama as Baek Ma Ri, who hails from a “royal family” among judicial circles and is in the final stages of training to become a prosecutor. However, her life turns upside down when her powerful grandfather Baek Hyun Moo (Lee Deok Hwa) orders her to work for Cheon Ji Hoon for two months.

In contrast to Cheon Ji Hoon’s relaxed posture, Baek Ma Ri is visibly exhausted in her poster as she holds a phone in one hand and a pen in the other. Although she also promises to “defend you passionately for a fee of 1,000 won,” Baek Ma Ri complains in her caption, “I graduated from the Judicial Research and Training Institute at the top of my class, I’m the granddaughter of the chairman of the country’s biggest law firm, and I’m working as a probationary employee for a 1,000-won attorney’s fee in real life?”

Finally, Choi Dae Hoon will play Seo Min Hyuk, a blue-blooded prosecutor who has his sights set on something else: marrying Baek Ma Ri. While he also hails from a royal family among judicial circles, Seo Min Hyuk is determined to turn Baek Mari’s family’s law firm Baek into law firm Baek&Seo.

As Seo Min Hyuk cheesily winks at the camera with an engagement ring and flowers, he declares, “I’ll only look at you and no one else!” Although he is “ready and prepared” to be “top-notch marriage material,” it’s hard to find any sincerity in the prosecutor’s professions of one-sided love for Baek Ma Ri as he dramatically insists, “Oh, to my beautiful beloved, while I have been a prosecutor who protected the law up until now, from now on, I want to be a prosecutor who protects you.”

Namgoong Min is a value-for-money attorney in One Dollar Lawyer

by solstices

odl_post1-1.jpg

Everyone needs a lawyer when they’ve landed in hot water, but not everyone can afford one. SBS’s upcoming legal comedy One Dollar Lawyer solves this problem with an eccentric yet capable lawyer whose skills far surpass his rates.

Namgoong Min (The Veil) plays Cheon Ji-hoon, the titular lawyer. For the low price of 1,000 won (approximately $1), he’ll back up those who don’t have anyone in their corner. Ji-hoon’s character poster depicts him as a man of many contradictions — just like how his refined three-piece suit clashes with his wacky disposition, and the fancy little teacup he’s holding is at odds with the pot of ramyun on his table.

In the drama’s latest teaser, Ji-hoon asks the camera what one could possibly afford with 1,000 won. That paltry sum may not be worth much, but it can certainly buy the full range of his services, from investigating to defending. Reassuring the viewers that the low price doesn’t mean they’re forgoing quality, Ji-hoon croons that not only is he extremely competent, but he also defends his clients with all his heart. Where else can you find such a value-for-money lawyer? (And with such expressive eyebrows to boot!)

Ji-hoon will be joined by the new intern Baek Mari, played by Kim Ji-eun (Again My Life). Mari hails from an established family in the legal realm, with extensive qualifications and a dazzling future ahead of her. Except all of that is put on hold when her grandfather sends her to work at Ji-hoon’s tiny law firm for two months. Mari is appalled by Ji-hoon’s unconventional ways, and she simply can’t wrap her head around why and how he could possibly charge such a low fee.

Rounding out our main trio is Choi Dae-hoon, whom I’m very excited to see in a lighthearted role, following Insider and The Good Detective 2. He plays Seo Min-hyuk, a sheltered golden spoon prosecutor who’s young at heart and innocently immature. Now that he’s back from a two-year stint in Brooklyn, romanticist Min-hyuk wants nothing more than to get married to his longtime crush Mari. Of course, that means he’s in for a shock when he finds out she’s working with resident nutjob Ji-hoon.

Written by the scriptwriter duo Choi Soo-jin and Choi Chang-hwan (Heart Surgeons, Defendant), with PDs Kim Jae-hyun and Shin Joong-hoon at the helm, One Dollar Lawyer premieres on September 23 in the Friday-Saturday slot on SBS. It will also be available via the OTT platforms Wavve and Disney+.

Watch: Namgoong Min Firmly Refuses To Change His Fee Despite His Fear Of His Angry Landlord In “One Dollar Lawyer” Teaser

SBS’s upcoming drama “One Dollar Lawyer” has unveiled a new teaser!

However, her life turns upside down when her powerful grandfather Baek Hyun Moo (Lee Deok Hwa) orders her to work for Cheon Ji Hoon for two months.

The third teaser highlights Cheon Ji Hoon’s reasonable double standards about money. In the beginning, a client who seems to be well-off requests Cheon Ji Hoon to be his lawyer while handing over a large sum of money. He offers, “I’ll pay you whatever you want.” Cheon Ji Hoon takes a whiff of the money before coolly rejecting him, saying, “Oddly enough, I don’t want to receive this money.”

Baek Ma Ri finds it ridiculous that Cheon Ji Hoon’s attorney’s fee is only 1,000 won, despite the fact that his rent is overdue. He quickly hides when his landlord appears, hilariously leaving Baek Ma Ri to deal with it on her own. Cheon Ji Hoon says, “We could be kicked out anytime,. That’s the kind of situation we’re in.” Beak Ma Ri covers her mouth with her hand as she witnesses him sleeping behind the couch with nothing but a piece of newspaper as a blanket.

Baek Ma Ri states she doesn’t understand why Cheon Ji Hoon is doing this, and Cheon Ji Hoon explains, “People who come here don’t come because they want to know about the law. They come because they need help.” His warm words make drama fans smile, piquing curiosity about his journeys as an attorney who values justice over money.

Nam Goong Min's character here remind me a lot of his character in "Chief Kim". The witty dialogue & humor is pure gold.

I do wonder however how does he sustain himself with such low charges LoL? I mean those fancy suits he wears don't look cheap.

His female co-star from "The Veil" is here too. It's nice to see Goong Min lookin' normal 'gain 'cause his physique on "The Veil" is scary LoL!

One Dollar Lawyer: Episode 1 (First Impressions)

by missvictrix

ODL01_0.jpg

One Dollar Lawyer wastes no time with its premiere episode: we jump right into the tale of our low-fee lawyer, and see his eccentric ways play out first-hand. The drama excels at random offhanded moments of comedy, and that’s totally what I’m here for.

Editor’s note: Continued drama coverage is pending based on Beanie feedback.

EPISODE 1 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

First, in case you missed it, the animated opening sequence for One Dollar Lawyer is just sheer 80s anime goodness, so please enjoy it here. After watching the intro, my only thought was this: please take that fun energy and bring it into the drama! And sure enough, the anime intro seems like the perfect way to describe the quick-paced zany show we’ve got in front of us.

We meet our hero LAWYER CHEON JI-HOON (Namgoong Min) under some appropriately crazy circumstances. A desperate man is on the truss of a bridge and about to jump into the Han River. No one can stop him, but there’s someone crazy enough to saunter over, climb up the bridge, and then — pretending to be cool as a cucumber but internally freaking out from the height — secures his client’s safety. Oh, and his 1,000 won fee (about $1 USD).

It’s the perfect intro to our hero, but it only gets better once we see him interact with his reluctant yet also strangely committed helper, dry cleaning owner SA MOO-JANG (Park Jin-woo). Moo-jang still can’t believe Ji-hoon only charges his clients 1,000 won, and asks if it’s for the wordplay, since his surname, Cheon, also means a “one thousand.” But we quickly see that Ji-hoon is dead serious about the clients he takes on and protects. He’s equally serious about collecting the fee. And he’s even more serious about fighting for justice by whatever crazy and unconventional means it takes.

We see this play out with the case Ji-hoon took on the bridge, and we move through this case with speed and with humor — two things sorely necessary if I’m going to make it through a legal drama and enjoy myself.

Ji-hoon and Moo-jang camp out at a loan shark’s empty office, waiting for their return. In a perfect example of the show’s campy humor, Ji-hoon suggests they order jjajangmyeon while they wait, and the two scarf their food down regardless of situation or circumstances. It’s hilarious.

Then our trainee prosecutor BAEK MARI (Kim Ji-eun) marches in with a crew of men and the notorious blue boxes. She assumes that Ji-hoon is the loan shark, and it sets up quite the crazy scene of hijinks and misunderstandings between them. (Also, her all-white pantsuit is amazing!)

When the loan shark Fire Bear finally comes in (whom Ji-hoon hilariously keeps calling Fire Chicken instead), we confirm that Ji-hoon was a former prosecutor and that he’s there on behalf of the bridge ajusshi. But also, we learn that his plan — concocted on the spot — is to defend Fire Bear against the prosecution. He charges this guy an exorbitant fee (which we learn about later), and then reveals his cleverness by rendering Mari’s search warrant illegal. It’s a quick, packed scene, full of characterization and comedy — and actually, that description goes for the entire first episode as well.

Ji-hoon works his magic with his legal fee for Fire Bear and the bridge ajusshi’s debts, and despite only having three or so scenes of this story line, it’s somehow really touching — and satisfying — when Ji-hoon and his client bow to each other before parting ways. Ji-hoon has his 1,000 won; the client has his crisis solved and his life turned around.

One Dollar Lawyer: Episode 2

by missvictrix

ODL02_1.jpg

Our one dollar lawyer and spunky prosecutor face off in court, but that’s not the only time they’ll find themselves thrown together. After an ultimatum is given to our heroine, she’ll have to deal with her least favorite person yet again.

Editor’s note: Coverage will continue with weecaps.

EPISODE 2 WEECAP

Ji-hoon has brought some mysterious evidence to court to win the case and set the adorable ex-pickpocketer free to be a good father again. Mari allows it to be submitted as evidence, because she doesn’t see the worth in it. Indeed, it is that very lack of intuition that loses her the case.

What Ji-hoon has brought in the lunchbox is a big fat nothing. That nothing, he says, is the amount of evidence they have to prove his client is guilty. And adding onto that, he has the pickpocket pinch a wallet in the middle of the courtroom to illustrate oh-so-effectively that this guy is so good he would never get caught in the act.

Ji-hoon wins the case, and it’s another feel-good moment for our innocent family who gets a new start on life, as well as everyone in the Ji-hoon crowd: they saved another person whom the law was discriminating against, and they did it via an unconventional method that was a small dunk, thanks to Ji-hoon knowing how to relate to a jury.

Indeed, there was someone in the courtroom who was very impressed by Ji-hoon’s skills: it’s LAWYER BAEK HYUN-MO (Lee Deok-hwa, in another powerful role with another troublesome grandchild to sort out — sans the sheet masks and drama-watching).

Lawyer Baek is actually Mari’s grandfather… and the head of the ultra prestigious Baek Law Firm where Mari is destined to land. Except not yet. Grandpa says she must intern for two months with a certain other law firm first… and sure enough it’s Ji-hoon’s ramshackle practice.

This is a super fun development, because it shows that Grandpa knows what it takes to be a truly good lawyer (not just book learnin’), and he wants his granddaughter to learn that very important lesson. But she has a mini tantrum instead, which we kind of expect?

Ji-hoon doesn’t want to take Mari on any more than she wants to be there — and Mari interrupts a hilarious running gag of Ji-hoon and Moo-jang regularly ducking their scary ajumma landlord because they’re late on the rent (again).

The fun of this whole interlude, of course, is the teasing and jokes — Ji-hoon’s deadpan humor and Mari’s prissy outrage. But she’s soon given a chance to prove herself (ish) when the landlady makes her appearance (1,000 won in tow) and asks for Ji-hoon’s legal assistance in sorting out some hyper-technical rules for Go-Stop. Ji-hoon plays a nice charade, and gets Mari to join in — it’s her first mini trial by fire.

A knock on Ji-hoon’s door one afternoon leads to his next case, of sorts. He sees no one when he opens the door and has to double back to see the little boy that’s there on behalf of his grandfather. Said grandfather is a security guard at an apartment complex, and he’s regularly pushed around and bullied by a real jerk of a resident. The old man is treated like his personal slave — and then blamed for everything that goes wrong, most recently a scratch on the bumper of his precious car.

Well, Ji-hoon has an interesting way of dealing with that. He runs a hand cart at top speed into the man’s car by “accident” and knocks the entire bumper off. Ji-hoon then walks off with a cheeky grin, telling Mari if she can solve that mess, he’s willing to take her on.

Well, we knew from the promos that Mari was going to have to intern with Ji-hoon, but I like the way the drama set up their characters and antagonism before that. This show is really all about the kooky moments and hijinks, so I hope that can continue — and increase — once Mari joins our crew.

I'm liking this show. It is fun and the leads have chemistry (in fact everyone is good, including the 'office manager') and even though they have the usual cute crying kids for dramatic hijinks, it's nice to see the ML being great and natural with kids. So, I don't care how many poor people they show crying their hearts out over their miserable (unjust) lives, as long as the ML remains witty, and FL snappy and show remains quick-paced.

The dress design for the ML is amazing (and FL looks like she likes OTT outlandish styles too - that bright pink suit on 1st day as legal trainee in a sea of black!)

And since FL has an opportunistic, gold digging suitor, I'm looking forward to her getting closer to the ML.

This is off to a very promising start of a nice fluffy 16 episode serial.
