Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist: Episodes 9-10

by Unit

PoongTheJoseonPsychiatrist10-00001.jpg

Our hero is faced with a choice when confronted with his past: run away or run towards it. Running away might mean safety for him and his loved ones, but with his strong sense of justice, our hero isn’t one to just give up without a fight.

EPISODES 9-10 WEECAP

We begin with Shin-woo admitting to Poong that he has been ordered by the second state councilor to kill him. But because Poong saved his life last week, Shin-woo tells him to leave the village and never return. Poong refuses to run away and despite Ji-han’s objection, he decides to face the matter squarely by going to Hanyang to uncover the truth about the second state councilor’s role in the late king’s poisoning.

Eun-woo, who doesn’t want Poong to leave, tries to stall him under the guise of going home to return some of his things, but she’s startled by a thief on her way and she faints. Anyway, her mission still ends up being a success because Poong now has to stay back in the clinic to look after her. Lol. But Shin-woo is upset at the incident, believing that Poong’s refusal to leave is inevitably putting Eun-woo in harm’s way.

Poong The Joseon Psychiatrist: Episodes 9-10

After some back and forth on how they’re individually in the best position to protect her, Eun-woo’s knights in shining armor are forced to team up to investigate the incident. They visit the house where the thief was escaping from, and though the madam of the house tries to cover up the incident, they learn that a bossam (men who kidnap widows for remarriage) almost kidnapped her daughter. Poong finds the incident odd because the young lady is single and not widowed, and her symptoms are more of heartbreak than shock at her attempted kidnap.

The thief breaks into the clinic to drop off some herbs (and escapes again right in the midst of all the family members, pfft), but Poong is able to trace his house thanks to smart cookie Jang-goon who knows all the village herb collectors and the specific type of herbs they collect. The herb collector is found passed out at home and when he’s brought to the clinic, Poong realizes he has the same symptoms as the young lady – symptoms synonymous to love sickness. Apparently, both of them are in love and planned to run away by staging the botched bossam-like scenario.

The herb collector is soon arrested at the clinic, and Poong begs Shin-woo to release him since they now know he’s not a thief. Shin-woo wonders how Poong can comfortably ask for favors from someone who’s under orders to kill him. However, he relents when Poong tells him that he’s a person who doesn’t follow unjustified orders. Shin-woo actually looks touched by Poong’s words, and I want him to officially join the clinic team already.

Eun-woo and Poong arrange for the lovers to meet in the woods, and encourage the lady to express her feelings aloud. Eun-woo gives the lady an example, but really, all she does is express her feelings to Poong, saying she doesn’t want him to leave. Awww. The lady then gets the courage to admit that she loves the herb collector and wants to be with him. Voila, the love of her life comes out of hiding, and the lovers happily run away with each other. Shin-woo is furious with Poong and Eun-woo for allowing the lovers to escape, and Eun-woo scolds him, saying he doesn’t know the burning feeling of love. But that’s not true since he’s totally in love with her. Lol.

Shin-woo questions his father as to why he has to kill Poong, and the second state councilor, deciding that he has outlived his usefulness, sends an assassin after him. But while Shin-woo fights the assassin off, he is literally stabbed in the back by Commander Im who previously alerted the second state councilor that Shin-woo is investigating the curious case of the color-changed needle. As Shin-woo drags his bloodied self away, the needle slips out of his possession, and gets into the hands of Commander Im. Ugh!

Meanwhile, Eun-woo learns about the late king’s death and the second state councilor’s involvement from Poong. Wanting more answers, they go in search of Shin-woo, and hear that he has been transferred to another station. Poong guesses that Shin-woo is in danger and true to his guess, they find an almost passed out Shin-woo in the woods. Shin-woo tells them that no one must know he’s still alive, and they hide him in what looks like the isolation center from last week. This is the second time Poong is saving Shin-woo’s life, and Shin-woo should be grateful that he didn’t torch down the place.

Due to Poong and Eun-woo’s frequency in sneaking out of the clinic with food for Shin-woo, the rest of the family conclude that they’re moving in together. Ji-han also jumps into conclusions when the king disguises as a scholar on a visit to the clinic in search of Poong. He sees it as an opportunity to extort a rich scholar, and Poong almost enters the ground on seeing him being all flippant with the king. Heh. The king has found the court maid who witnessed Poong’s father’s assassination, and brought her for treatment because she’s still traumatized by the incident.

When the family learns that the scholar is the king, they turn on Ji-han who actually looks like his soul is about to leave his body. And in another case of jumping into conclusions, Poong recognizes the maid as one of his former patients in the palace when he sees the birthmarks on her chest while Eun-woo performs acupuncture. But all Ib-bun and Eun-woo hear is his oblivious description of the birthmarks and assume he was in some kind of playboy relationship with the maid. Lol.

Commander Im reports to the second state councilor that Shin-woo (who is now missing from the isolation center) has been taken care of and receives new orders to confirm that the maid is in the clinic — like it wasn’t enough to have previously ordered for the slaughtering of her family, the second state councilor wants to silence the maid himself. Commander Im also has a new business proposal for the second state councilor that involves the sale of an addictive drug, and I wonder why we even need this when the drama is ending next week.

Poong and the clinic family take the maid to her childhood home to relive happier times, but the house is a mess when they arrive, and they clean up the place so that the maid comes to a near perfect home rather than one that has been set upon by destruction. Awww. While Jang-goon unpacks, he puts together some papers the maid has been scribbling on and the resulting image is the picture of a butterfly – the shape of an ornament worn by the assassin.

I didn't realise this is the last episode until I saw the courtmaid reappear.

Everything was until the last scene.....Can someone explain the purpose of the last scene?

They are having a season 2 in Jan 2023. So we can expect that they will end with a cliffhanger for the last scene which will be continued to Season 2.

They did clear Poong’s name from the late king’s death and the real culprits did get their comeuppance so they did wrap up Season 1 main story line properly. I am satisfied with Season 1 and how they wrap things up in the last episode.

Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist: Episodes 11-12 (Final)

by Unit

PoongTheJoseonPsychiatrist12-00022.jpg

In the battle between good and evil, only one side will emerge victorious. And as our story comes to its conclusion this week with the final showdown between our hero and the villains, we are left to wonder if everything is truly over until it is over.

EPISODES 11-12 WEECAP

Shin-woo’s re-alliance with the council of wickedness makes him vow to his father to kill Poong and retrieve the color-changed needle while at it. He rightly guesses that the needle is with Commander Im (who looked very shocked to see him alive lol), but with Im’s realization that the needle must be very important to the second state councilor, he refuses to give it up for insurance purposes.

Poong travels to Hanyang to report the court maid’s death to the king, and pretends to be newlyweds with Eun-woo when they’re questioned by the guards at the city’s gate. This is totally Eun-woo’s idea, and she looks very pleased to be his fake wife. Lol. The king is devastated to learn about the maid’s death, and he orders them to carry out the autopsy of his court lady who died earlier in the show. And to nobody’s surprise, Poong and Eun-woo confirm that she was poisoned just like the late king.

Back in the village, Commander Im also links the color-changed needle to the king’s death. And when his addictive drug (a pro-max version of opium) hits the market, Ji-han finally realizes that Commander Im wanted to take over the clinic’s land to grow opium. Commander Im cannot be arrested without proof but he’s not one to sit around waiting for proof against him to surface. Hence, he uses the needle to threaten the second state councilor into protecting him and his farm. It’s almost laughable how the cartoon villain thinks he can threaten the live action one. Pfft.

The second state councilor is unfazed by the threats, and Commander Im goes into pleading mode instead. He swears allegiance to the second state councilor and promises to hand over the needle after harvesting the current batch of opium. Thanks to his acquired immunity from the second state councilor, Commander Im is able to avoid arrest, and he uses his newfound powers to take members of the clinic family into his custody. Ugh! I hate him so much!

Poong and Eun-woo return from Hanyang to meet the clinic in disarray, and learn about the arrest from Grandmother who is the only one left. Between Grandmother and an addicted patient’s ramblings, they get an idea as to where Commander Im’s farm is located. It’s in the middle of a deserted forest on which lies the remains of escapees killed during the barbarian invasion. And it’s sad that by growing opium – which is ruining the lives of the people in their village – on this same ground, Commander Im is effectively killing the escapees twice!

As a testament to how disbelievingly resourceful the members of the clinic are, Poong and Eun-woo whip up a smoke bomb of sorts to disarm the guards at the farm. Poong is caught by Commander Im when he goes to rescue Ji-han, but Commander Im doesn’t get to gloat for long with the arrival of the district governor’s men. Cornered, Commander Im tries to negotiate for his freedom, but he comes to his inglorious end when he’s struck down by an assassin’s (Shin-woo’s) arrow. The clown even dies while still trying to hold on to his opium plants. Tsk.

With Commander Im’s death, the needle returns to Poong who takes it to the king as evidence with a ledger of the dirty transactions between Im and the second state councilor. Ji-han also goes to Hanyang separately, to meet with the royal physician – an old colleague of his, and a co-conspirator in the late king’s poisoning. Unfortunately, the royal physician is too scared of the second state councilor, and refuses to turn against him.

The royal physician gets arrested alongside Shin-woo who is taken in for killing the court maid but they both maintain their silence. The stress from all of this takes a toll on the king’s health, but he doesn’t trust the medical office with his treatment. This is where Eun-woo comes in to administer acupuncture, and she invites the rest of the clinic family to Hanyang to prepare the medications for the king. They all look so happy to be reunited in the big city, and Man-bok is all boastful about the size of Poong’s house. Lol.

Over dinner, Eun-woo realizes the late king was poisoned through his last meal, and the king orders for the same dish to be prepared for all the ministers. The other ministers dig into the food, but the second state councilor leaves his bowl untouched, and somehow, this proves that he’s the only one who knows how the late king was poisoned. (It’s hilarious how the other ministers begin to push their bowls away when they hear about the poisoning. Heh.) The second state councilor is arrested on the spot, but he manages to slip a note to one of the guards.

Poong gets accosted by an assassin at home, and Ji-han is slashed while trying to protect him. Before the assassin can do more damage, he’s stopped by the arrows of a hidden marksman. Hmmm. This incident leaves Poong with a burning desire to get justice for everyone harmed by the second state councilor, but the second state councilor and the royal physician obviously deny all the charges even in the face of overwhelming evidence.

Watch: Kim Min Jae, Kim Hyang Gi, And More Reflect On “Poong, The Joseon Psychiatrist,” Rave About Cast’s Chemistry, And Share Excitement For Season 2

The cast of “Poong, The Joseon Psychiatrist” has temporarily bid farewell to the drama before returning with Season 2!

Based on the novel of the same name, tvN’s “Poong, The Joseon Psychiatrist” tells the story of Yoo Se Poong (Kim Min Jae), a well-known internal medicine doctor who gets expelled from the royal court after getting caught up in a conspiracy. When he meets Seo Eun Woo (Kim Hyang Gi) and Gye Ji Han (Kim Sang Kyung) in the strange and beautiful village of Gyesu, he works to become a true doctor who heals the heart.

Following the Season 1 finale that aired on September 6, “Poong, The Joseon Psychiatrist” shared a making video from their final filming day featuring the cast’s closing comments. After the last filming, Kim Min Jae brightly shares, “I feel…the same as usual! Why? Because we have Season 2! Because we will film Season 2 in a week.” He adds, “I think we’ve always felt like a big family. Very warm, loud, and fun memories [from set] will remain deeply. I’m hoping that many, many more of those images will appear in Season 2.”

Kim Hyang Gi shares similar feelings of excitement for Season 2 as Kim Min Jae and explains, “I think it’s important to conclude well until the very end.” Regarding her co-stars, Kim Hyang Gi comments, “I really, really love our Gyesu clinic family members. I think that lovable chemistry became a big strength for our drama. My Gyesu clinic family, thank you so much.” Kim Hyang Gi adds that Season 2 will offer a new atmosphere and shares, “I think you’ll be able to see a little more about what happens in the palace. I think I’ll be able to show a new image so I’m also looking forward to it!”

Kim Sang Kyung explains that he feels lighthearted now that they’ve wrapped up Season 1 well and praises his co-stars, saying, “Our members are quite unusual. Our ages and genders are all different but we get along well. Seeing how we always stay together to chat instead of scattering when we’re resting from filming, we’ve said that we think we have a really great relationship.”

Ahn Chang Hwan commented, “I was sincerely happy. I really felt like I had become family with the actors and I feel lighthearted. Now, I plan to diligently prepare again for Season 2.” Just like his co-stars, Ahn Chang Hwan shared that the cast’s chemistry was so good and added, “It’s not easy to be able to rely on one another but just being able to be on set together made me happy.”

Jeon Gook Hyang explained that she felt both sad and relieved now that filming was over while Yeon Bo Ra revealed she bawled while reading their last script. Yeon Bo Ra shared, “It felt like Se Poong, Eun Woo, and Gye Ji Han were saying the words I really wanted to hear in that moment so I received a lot of healing while reading the script. I was hoping that viewers would also be able to feel that too.”

Kim Soo Ahn shared the same enthusiasm as her co-stars about their chemistry as she commented, “To the point where my mouth hurts [from smiling], it was the best. If I did something, they played along with all of it. While watching, I’m sure there were a lot of lines that made viewers confused as to whether it was a line or an improvisation. Among that, I predict that nine out of 10 of those were improvisations.”

Han Chang Min excitedly reflected on acting in his first-ever historical drama and explained that he had so much fun on set while learning lots from his senior actors. After, Yoo Sung Joo, Oh Kyung Joo, and Jung Won Chang thank viewers for tuning in and ask them for their continued love on Season 2!

Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist teases Season 2 coming this January

by missvictrix

poong2_1.jpg

Like it or not, tvN’s Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist took a “hang on we’ll be back for Season 2” approach to its ending a few months back, befuddling many a viewer. Now, however, Season 2 is just around the corner, and tvN has released a cute teaser to get you excited to return to the beloved village clinic.

Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist 2 stars Kim Min-jae, Kim Hyang-gi, and Kim Sang-kyung — along with the rest of the cast who are reprising their roles from Season 1. Indeed, the readiness level of this “season” makes me think that it was already filmed as a continuous drama, and that the creating of this seasonal break was more of a broadcasting decision than a thematic break that was required by the story itself.

This sense of seasons or dramas being split into parts “just because” has definitely been in the air lately. And I’m not gonna lie — I hope it’s unsuccessful, and that broadcasters find themselves recommitting to the one-and-done drama format where a show airs from beginning to end in a continuous fashion. You know, like the drama gods intended.

But back to Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist 2, the recent teaser is really just a little peek into the continuing world of the drama — we see flashes of our favorite found family and clinicians being their cute selves, and our hero himself introduces the drama’s premiere date. There’s not much else to say except: let the cuteness continue! (And end properly this time.)

The second season of Poong will be 10 episodes, and has migrated to the Wednesday-Thursday slot, premiering on January 11 on tvN.
