Cafe Minamdang: Episodes 1-2

by meryl

Things are off to a quick start in the endearingly quirky world of Cafe Minamdang. As an allegedly omniscient shaman continues to gain popularity by solving criminal cases, an up-and-coming detective relentlessly pursues every suspicious lead she can, and we happily bear witness to a whole lot of hilarious shenanigans.

EPISODES 1-2 WEECAP

We first meet our suave swindling shaman NAM HAN-JUN (Seo In-gook) showing off his “spiritual” abilities at MK Hotel’s open recruitment, “reading” the candidates through a TV screen while jumping around chairs.

Despite his eccentricity, MK Hotel CEO LEE MIN-GYEONG (Hwang Woo-seul-hye) absolutely trusts him, even allowing him to barge in and conduct a shaman ceremony, complete with a huge fan and brass bells. After “sensing” a vengeful spirit, Han-jun zeroes in on the MK Hotel president. It turns out the president is guilty of sexually assaulting a former secretary until she took her own life.

Everyone’s in awe of Han-jun’s skills, but behind his shamanism is a hardworking team. His younger sister NAM HYE-JUN (Kang Mina) is a genius hacker always gathering intelligence, while former detective GONG SU-CHEOL (Kwak Shi-yang) takes care of on-ground investigation. Finally, as a former profiler, Han-jun can fill in the blanks and paint a complete picture of their clients’ lives.

On regular days, Han-jun sees his clients at Cafe Minamdang, which is always filled to the brim with fans hoping to see him and people seeking his advice. Good thing they’ve got part-time employee JO NA-DAN (Baek Seo-hoo) helping out. He’s not as in the loop as the other two, but he does occasionally assist the crew with their schemes.

Despite their small size, the Minamdang crew has a lot of power. For example, they can easily monitor if someone is fleeing the country, like the MK Hotel president plans to do. Hye-jun tips off Daeun Police Team 7, and the recently appointed leader HAN JAE-HUI (Oh Yeon-seo) answers the call. She gives chase, fights off armed gangsters, and successfully apprehends the escaping criminal.

After being mistaken for a rookie, Jae-hui finally gets to introduce herself. Her much older teammates JANG DOO-JIN (Jung Man-sik) and KIM SANG-HYEOP (Heo Jae-ho) recognize her as Han the Ghost, who became infamous for allegedly taking down a drug cartel without any weapon or back-up. While gossiping about their new leader, the team gets shocked — the first of many — as she sneaks up on them like, well, a ghost. Lol.

Back at Cafe Minamdang, Han-jun gets a call from hotel CEO Min-gyeong, who is worrying about the weird behavior of her husband, Chairman SHIN GYEONG-HO (Kim Won-shik). Han-jun assures his VVIP client he will “consult the spirits” — by which he really means he’ll watch CCTV and dash cam footage.

As the Minamdang crew retrace Gyeong-ho’s trail, they learn that he was driving drunk, crashed into a motorbike, and buried the man’s body. The crew searches for the hit-and-run victim’s body, and after getting scared of a “zombie” at a cemetery, they find him alive — but barely.

Jae-hui decides to take on the case. Doo-jin warns her to be careful since many eyes are on her, but she shows little care about the higher-ups who want her out. After uncovering Gyeong-ho’s involvement, Jae-hui learns this isn’t his first rodeo with the police. According to Doo-jin, Gyeong-ho has already been accused of murder before, but after some bribery, his case was ruled as an accident.

This just encourages Jae-hui to continue pursuing the investigation, so she enlists the help of prosecutor CHA DO-WON (Kwon Soo-hyun), a.k.a. the Chatterbox, to secure a warrant, and he easily agrees.

Unfortunately for Jae-hui, Han-jun is out to foil their plans to take care of his VVIP chaebol client and her husband. After accurately deducing the events of the first murder, Han-jun tells Gyeong-ho to follow his instructions if he wants to be saved.

Using the technicalities of the law, Han-jun renders Team 7’s hard evidence illegal and useless after rookie detective NA GWANG-TAE (Jung Ha-joon) received the dash cam footage just one minute earlier than the warrant’s arrival. Even through the screen, I can feel the frustration coming off Team 7, especially Jae-hui.

Seo In Guk, Kwak Si Yang, Oh Yeon Seo, And More Investigate Through Unusual Means In “Café Minamdang”

tvN’s “Café Minamdang” shared new stills previewing the upcoming episode!

Based on the popular web novel of the same name, “Café Minamdang” is a comedy-mystery starring Seo In Guk as Nam Han Joon, a fraudulent male shaman who used to be a profiler. Oh Yeon Seo plays Han Jae Hee, a detective in the violent crimes unit who is passionate about justice.

Spoilers

Previously, Nam Han Joon helped Shin Kyung Ho (Kim Won Shik) escape by claiming that Han Jae Hee’s team illegally obtained the black box containing crucial evidence. Han Jae Hee chased after Nam Han Joon in anger and delivered a sharp message to him, raising anticipation for how their relationship will change going forward.

The newly released stills capture Nam Han Joon and Gong Soo Chul (Kwak Si Yang) holding a Gut (ritual performed by Korean shamans). Gong Soo Chul bows his head down low to plea earnestly to Nam Han Joon.

Han Jae Hee and Cha Do Won (Kwon Soo Hyun) are at a loss while witnessing the ritual take place. Not to mention, Han Jae Hee is suspicious of Nam Han Joon being a baksumuduang (male shaman) in the first place. However, armed with a brazen attitude, Nam Han Joon will scold Han Jae Hee and Cha Do Won.

The production team shared, “In episode 3, Nam Han Joon, Han Jae Hee, Gong Soo Chul, and Cha Do Won will have a shocking encounter. Please keep watch of the interesting process in which Nam Han Joon and Gong Soo Chul, who habitually use foul and expedient means, and Han Jae Hee and Cha Do Won, who investigate within the boundaries of the law, face off while resolving the case.”

More stills also preview the first meeting between Nam Han Joon, Gong Soo Chul, Nam Hye Joon (Kang Mina), and Jonathan (Baek Seo Hoo). Nam Han Joon is lost deep in thought at a shrine, while Gong Soo Chul looks shockingly different with long hair and a mustache. The two show unlikely teamwork as they work determinedly together in another photo. Nam Hye Joon and Jonathan watch on with unimpressed gazes, raising questions about how Café Minamdang was originally formed.

Seo In Guk, Kwak Si Yang, Kang Mina, And Baek Seo Hoo Showcase Spectacular Teamwork In “Café Minamdang”

KBS 2TV’s “Café Minamdang” has shared an exciting glimpse of the next episode!

Spoilers

Previously, Lee Min Kyung (played by Hwang Woo Seul Hye) made a plan to destroy her husband Shin Kyung Ho (Kim Won Shik) before the shareholders’ meeting and made a deal with Jung Chung Ki (Kwon Hyuk), who had swept Shin Kyung Ho’s murder charges under the carpet. Realizing what’s going on, Shin Kyung Ho called Jung Chung Ki to the mountain villa, and the members of Minamdang, who intuitively realized that he was in danger, headed towards the location.

In the first set of newly released stills, Nam Han Joon and Gong Soo Chul (Kwak Si Yang) are in a rigid atmosphere. From their serious expressions, it can be assumed that something unexpected happened to them. Furthermore, Nam Han Joon looks around with sharp eyes, and he seems greatly troubled, creating a sense of tension.

The second set of stills exude a completely different atmosphere from the first one. This time, Nam Han Joon, Gong Soo Chul, Jonathon (Baek Seo Hoo), and Nam Hye Joon (Kang Mina) are at the amusement park.

Nam Han Joo is holding a cute headband that sharply contrasts with his serious expression, whereas Gong Soo Chul shows maximum cuteness with his adorable pose. Jonathon increases excitement as he speaks into a microphone, and Nam Hye Joon is enjoying the festive mood with high spirits. The production team hinted that these four characters will show more of their superb teamwork in the upcoming episode.

Cafe Minamdang: Episodes 3-4

by meryl

Cafe0304-00470.jpg

This week, we learn how our motley crew of shamanism frauds came together, and we also witness our usually serious detective getting all tangled up in her complicated feelings for a certain profiler-turned-shaman.

EPISODES 3-4 WEECAP

We continue right where we left off last week. While Jae-hui breaks into the cafe, the Minamdang crew sets up a trap for Inspector Jung Cheong-gi with the help of hotel CEO Lee Min-gyeong. In a secret meeting, Min-gyeong asks Inspector Jung to hand over his phone so Hye-jun can hack into the phone and track his communications.

Back at the cafe, Jae-hui barely gets away from being caught, head-butting Han-jun and wounding his forehead. Poor Han-jun woke up briefly only to once again be KO’d by his sister’s smelly feet.

The next day, rookie detective Na visits Cafe Minamdang for a consultation with the infamous shaman. Stalker Jae-hui insists on joining him, but she starts off her visit with a series of embarrassments after she thinks Han-jun is heading her way, only to realize he just wants to admire himself in the mirror.

Then she gets pushed onto Han-jun, caught in his arms (complete with romantic leg lifted up), but then subsequently dropped to fall on the floor. Ouch, the secondhand embarrassment is real.

Nevertheless, during the consultation, Jae-hui calls Han-jun out on the bullcrap he’s spewing, asking him how he even ended up being a “shaman.”

This reminds Han-jun of Minamdang’s beginnings after he got out of prison two years ago. After his sister picks him up, they head straight to Su-cheol’s private investigation agency — except it looks less like an office and more of a dumpster full of shaman artifacts.

They get into a tearful reunion just as a customer comes in before immediately turning around to leave because of all the statues and shamanism tools. Han-jun captures her attention after claiming she’s here to find her runaway son. To the customer, it seems he’s the real deal, but in truth, Han-jun simply overheard her talking about her problem on the phone.

Impressed with Han-jun’s so-called “abilities,” the customer promises to pay any amount they ask for. Blinded by the prospect of easy money, Han-jun immediately puts on his act.

Using the now familiar strategy with Han-jun as the mastermind, Hye-jun as the hacker, and Su-cheol as the brawn, they rescue their first customer’s son from school bullies and loan sharks. Here they also meet Na-dan, who insists on joining them.

Seeing the success of their first case, Han-jun suggests they pose as shamans in order to draw out Gopuri, a.k.a. the real murderer of Prosecutor Han Jae-jeong. One of the only clues they have about the culprit is how he was holding a gopuri knot (i.e. a knotted cloth used to comfort the dead) when Jae-jeong died, leading them to think the culprit is either into shamanism or a shaman himself.

Everyone is on board — even if Hye-jun enumerates a lot of demands that Han-jun grudgingly agrees to — but Hye-jun reminds her brother that their mother, a Catholic deaconess, would protest with his chosen occupation. So he proposes to hide their shaman business behind the facade of a cafe, the name of which is aptly thrown together via a misunderstanding — and some convenient wordplay around their good looks. Thus, the birth of Cafe Minamdang.

I was thinking the same thing, the timing of that person with the caffeine allergy suddenly dying, she's feeding him the information innocently and he is one step ahead of them.

I really like this drama, the chemistry, humor and suspense is good!
