'The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938' during the Japanese colonial period, the meaning of 'time to hunt'

PD Journal = Popular Culture Critic Deok-Hyeon Jeong] Lee Yeon (Lee Dong-wook), a nine-tailed fox who flew away during the Japanese colonial period in 1938. tvN's Saturday and Sunday drama <The Tale of a Gumiho 1938> opens with a fantasy action action drama between Lee Rang (Kim Bum) and Lee Yeon.

In this fantasy where mountain gods appear, such as Lee Yeon a nine-tailed fox, Hong-ju (Kim So-yeon), the eagle-owl owner and owner of Myoyeon-gak, Lee Rang (Kim Bum), a half-human, half-fox and Lee Yeon’s brother, and Cheon Moo-yeong (Ryu Gyeong-soo), who is a tiger in Baekdu Mountain, flying around is basic. And there is a scene where dozens of people fall down in one room. Scenes of riding horses, shooting guns, and chasing trains remind us of westerns, but they remind us of the so-called ‘Manchurian Western’ genre, which is familiar to us from director Kim Jee-woon’s film The Good, The Bad, and The Weird.

A Manchurian Western featuring a nine-tailed fox. It is also the appearance of Korean superheroes against the backdrop of the Japanese colonial era. Interestingly, not only the protagonists of indigenous tales, such as the nine-tailed fox, but also Japanese monsters such as Akira Saito (Ji-ho Lim) and Ryuhei Kato (Do-kwon Ha), whom they will face in the future, appear. In particular, Kato Ryuhei is a well-known Japanese monster known to us as 'Tengu'. <The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938> is also a work that establishes a structure for a confrontation between Korea and Japan in a fantasy action action drama of ghosts unfolding against the backdrop of the Japanese colonial period.

Tale2_15_2f9a2578ee.jpg

As you can see from <The Tale of a Gumiho 1938>, the way our contents deal with the Japanese colonial period has become much more flexible than in the past. Works like <Mr. Centered around a woman named Go Ae-shin (Kim Tae-ri), Eugene Choi (Lee Byung-hun), a former slave who returned as an American officer, a pro-Japanese  who abandoned the past (Yoo Yeon-seok), and Lee Hee-seong (Byeon Yo-han), a writer who studied abroad in Japan, form relationships as they develop, drew a story.

Comparing it to <Kyungsung Scandal>, which aired in 2007, it is quickly revealed that the film has become much more flexible in the way it handles the Japanese colonial period. As contained in the line, “Love to your heart’s content and be happy to your heart’s content,” this work, which added an anti-Japanese movement and romance in the background of Gyeongseong in the 1930s, was controversial at the time because of this point. This case tells us that the kind of trauma we have about a certain period of Japanese colonial rule has suppressed freedom in content.

However, the fact that <Chicago Typewriter> (2017), written again by writer Soo-Wan Jin, who wrote <Kyungsung Scandal>, against the backdrop of the Japanese colonial era, received favorable reviews, speaks to viewers' changed views. As expected, viewers sympathized with this work without much discomfort (?) about this work, which overlaps the narrative of the anti-Japanese movement during the Japanese colonial period and the passionate love story of young people.

For us, the period of Japanese colonial rule is like an old trauma. This trauma was also revealed in the content, making the works set in this period stay in a single narrative called the ‘anti-Japanese movement’. However, researchers who study this period point out that it is undesirable for content to confine this era in the frame of the “anti-Japanese movement” too much. Even in a gloomy era like the Japanese colonial era, our lives still continued, and there was also a vitality overflowing with vitality within it, which means that content containing a uniform approach to this era can erase it.

It is an unchanging fact that <Eyes of Dawn>, written by Ji-na Song and directed by the late director Kim Jong-hak, which caused a sensation when it aired in 1991, is a masterpiece that will remain forever. <Eyes of Dawn> is evaluated as a work that contains important moments in Korean history from the Japanese colonial period to the present.

However, the Japanese colonial era was also the time when “dance halls” were built and new women appeared, drinking coffee, and free love began to unfold. It is for this reason that dramas such as <The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938>, which bring various genres more flexibly and unfold infinite imagination, are welcome. It is because the scenes without obsession show around that there was a life of love, pain, struggle, and enjoyment at that time as well.

image_readtop_2023_366835_16838944215467

'The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938' Lee Dong-wook's efforts were captured at the action shooting site.

On the 12th, King Kong by Starship released behind-the-scenes stills of Lee Dong-wook, who is appearing as 'Lee Yeon' in the tvN Saturday and Sunday drama 'The Tale of a Nine Tailed 1938' (written by Han Woo-ri, directed by Kang Shin-hyo), which is much loved as an action restaurant.

Lee Dong-wook's performance at the beginning of the play properly imprinted the direction of the drama, which is a 'K-fantasy action action drama'. In the scene of his first appearance, where he was thrilled by overpowering dozens of Japanese soldiers, he perfectly digested different action movements and sequences each time he dealt with one person. Lee Dong-wook freely used pistols, long guns, and swords to enrich the spectacle.

In addition, Lee Dong-wook doubled the splendor of the action with fantasy elements. In the play, the scene where he lands from the roof to the ground to catch the red and white mask showed his ability as a nine-tailed fox at once. In particular, Lee Yeon, who made an emergency landing in 1938, and Lee Yeon, who lives in that era, presented both surprise and delight with the explosive synergy of 'Lee Dong-wook vs. Lee Dong-wook' that has never been seen before.

Among them, in the public photos, Lee Dong-wook hangs a wire and focuses on monitoring even in the middle of filming. In the following photos, he practiced over and over again to skillfully express gun action scenes even during breaks. As such, it is said that Lee Dong-wook not only prepared for action acting safely and meticulously at the filming site, but also constantly consulted and worked hard with the martial arts team to create good results.

From the first week of the broadcast, Lee Dong-wook captured the hearts of viewers with colorful actions that made it impossible to take your eyes off the whole story. Lee Dong-wook's actions that do not buy his body will continue in the future. In the trailer for episode 3 of 'The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938', Lee Yeon wearing an eyepatch heightened tension while being surrounded by an unknown group. In addition, the spectacular action of Gumiho Yiyeon, which appeared in the teaser video released before the broadcast, is raising the expectations of many people. Meanwhile, 'The Tale of a Gumiho 1938' will be broadcast on the 13th at 9:20 pm.

The fight between Lee Dong-wook and Ryu Kyung-soo begins in earnest. Ahead of today's broadcast, the production team revealed Lee Yeon (Lee Dong-wook) who was in a desperate crisis. What is the intention of Cheon Moo-yeong (played by Ryu Kyung-soo) who delivered the unwelcome gift to Myoyeon-gak?

In the last broadcast, Lee Yeon's crash landing in 1938 was depicted. Yi-yeon succeeds in rescuing his dying younger brother Lee Rang (played by Kim Bum), but gets trapped in the past. Looking for a way to return to the present, he found out that the door of time would open on the lunar eclipse 29 days later. Until then, Lee Yeon went out to find the red and white mask that had imprisoned him in the past, and when he learned that the 'three insects' that confused the area were also the work of the red and white mask, he intuition that an unusual enemy had appeared.

According to the production team, it is revealed that the identity of the red and white mask was once Lee Yeon and his best friend Cheon Moo-yeong, and his cold face, which began to take revenge on Lee Yeon, further heightens the sense of crisis. What is Chun Moo-young preparing for after drawing the line to Ryu Hong-ju (played by Kim So-yeon) who found him, saying, "I'm no longer the Chun Moo-young you knew."

Then Moo-young Chun, who appears with a mysterious girl (played by Yu-ha Kim), and Yi-yeon, who leads the way. In particular, the precarious figure of Yiyeon confronting someone's attack with her eyes covered in a forest where darkness has fallen is captured, adding to the tension. It is noteworthy what the crisis that faced Lee Yeon will be.

In episode 3 of ‘The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox’, Saetani with a strong curse appears. The production team said, “The fight between Lee Yeon and Chun Moo-young is in full swing. What is the gift that the red and white mask sent to Lee Yeon, Lee Yeon's unique action in the dark will give you a thrill."

-Planning intention of the drama ‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’

1. The Tale of a Gumiho returns as an ‘openly’ retro fantasy: last season. When we asked about our indigenous gods and ghosts with the two keywords of ‘memories and empathy’, nine-tailed foxes, firebugs, eoducksini, fox sisters, snails, etc. found their names and appeared by our side. So, let's play a little openly this time. The genre is a time-slip action drama. The taboo disappears, the action becomes stronger, and the characters become more bloody. The only thing that remains is 'Lee Yeon's Pure Love'.

2. Gyeongseong, a city of anxiety and fascination, 1938: black rubber shoes and high heels. Topknot and permed hair. The place where bed bug-infested thatched houses and high-end department stores were mixed together was ironic in itself and a stage where ‘East and West’ and ‘past and present’ competed. ‘Modern’, which landed on the Korean Peninsula riding the wave of Seo Se-dong Branch, may have blossomed more brilliantly. If it wasn't for the 'colonies'. In fact, the traditional Joseon Dynasty was killed. Stigmatized with words like ‘uncivilized, underdeveloped, barbaric’. I don't know if I don't know, but our native monsters must have suffered from the times too.

3. Connect with Gyeongseong in 2023: Despite the gap of about 100 years, Gyeongseong at that time only resembles ours today. Intellectuals who graduated from prestigious schools went to coffee shops because they couldn’t find a job. Just like today's youngsters who have nested in Starbucks. It was an era when the worst unemployment rates were just making headlines. Still, the youth found a way to 'small happiness', tried to be 'cheerful', threw off the custom of early marriage, and started warm love. This is the story of a 'one nine-tailed fox' who passed through the middle of that variety era.

-Drama ‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’ episode information Episode 3: An uninhabited hermitage guarded by a skeleton monk named “Saetani.” In the sanctuary, there is a ‘big tail’ with a lot of amulets attached to it, and Mu-yeong is standing in front of it... It appears in front of Myoyeongak holding it. Unfolding the cloth covering her eyes, she searches for Yi-yeon, echoing the bleak sound of bells. "Where are you? Where are you?... Found it!" A girl facing the sleeping Yiyeon. Opening her eyes to the girl's whisper, Yiyeon makes eye contact with the girl and wakes up screaming. Is it a nightmare... The postponement of an ominous premonition.

Lee Yeon, Gumiho

‘It didn’t matter if the place I crash landed on was hell. Unless it’s a conventional toilet.’ The days when hot showers were a different world. Those they encountered wore lice and nits on their heads, and were blackened with bed bugs wherever they went. In 1938, he was greeted with a shocking hygienic situation. furthermore. no wifi No mint chocolate ice cream. More than anything, my beloved Jia is not by my side. 'I have to go back. To the place where I lived.'

By the way, this guy and that guy catch Lee Yeon's ankle. A woman who had a crush on him to die. She was once my best friend. and his lost brother, Lee rang. When he meets Lee Rang again, he refuses to tell him that he is from the future. The fact that they became brothers again. 'Keep on hating. If you open your heart, you will get hurt. Never again... die for me.'

In fact, Lee Yeon had never properly seen the scenery of colonial Gyeongseong. At that time, he was an opiate addict. In exchange for his own dark history, Lee Yeon throws himself into the turbulence of his time. As Joseon's 'last mountain god'. The Government General's counterattack was tough, but there was one thing they overlooked. In the era of 'with no lovers to protect', he is much more ruthless than we know. Now is the time to hunt.

Ryu Hong-ju,  The owner of Myoyeon-gak, former Western Mountain God

Myoyeongak, the finest restaurant in Gyeongseong. Strangely, there is a woman rumored to 'never age' here. A truckload of men dying to get their hands on her, who is both a saviour and an untouchable. But... "If you can beat me in a drinking contest, you can have her." Where does the liquor go in her slender body, I wonder, and it's a trick that even a few bosses can't break. It's no coincidence that she has the word "liquor" in her name. Moreover, no one knows, but she is the possessor of immense power.

She is one of the four mountain gods who ruled the Korean peninsula along with Hong-joo's identity and Yi-yeon. The body is a natural monument and an endangered grade 2 eagle owl. The reason why large birds of prey, called the king of the wild, settled in Myoyeongak. 'Ah... I'm bored. Do you have anything interesting to do?" I've broken all the taboos of the mountain gods, and I've been caught and sentenced to hell by the Changelings. I'm surrounded by people, but I don't have any friends. I don't make friends with people who are weaker than me. Actually, I might have been a little lonely.

Her eyes suddenly lit up: "Yi Yun?!!! I said to Lee Yeon from the moment we first met, a long time ago. "You're mine." And then it happened. I was furious when I heard rumours that the impudent Kumiho had fallen for a human woman, and now Yi Yun had appeared in Myeongyeongak on his own?!! Once she sets her sights on something, she never lets go. If she is not mine, I will kill him.

Spoiler

Lee Rang, a half-human, half-fox hybrid born between a human and a nine-tailed fox

He became an enemy of his older brother and wandered the fields and mountains like a living corpse. Someone attacked Lee Rang. It was a group of wolves who had lost their home and transformed into a group of bandits. Of course, the leader of the group of bandits who touched the half-human, half-fox with depression had his head blown off with a single knife. ‘I’ll make everything into eagle rice.’ But, they who lost their leader, are they kneeling down to Lee Rang?!

That's how Lee Rang lived through the 30's as the leader of a bandit. In the place where they passed, there was a rumor that not even a corpse was left behind, and they became cold-blooded murderers. In front of such a person, the older brother he hated to death appeared. After a bloody battle of ‘Death!!!’, he is caught by Lee Yeon and dragged around barbershops and boutiques, and is reborn as a fairly modern boy. However, in Lee Rang’s eyes, the identity of ‘Lee Yeon next to her’ is suspicious. We'll find out later, but OMG!! come from the future 'Am I alive in the future? How are they living?' For some reason, a deep sadness gleamed in his older brother's eyes.

And 'I-Rang's first love'. His first and last love, the one he'd give his life for if she were a fox. It just so happens to be a mermaid. His mother-in-law, Yi-yeon, teases him, saying, "No seafood in our house," and it drives him crazy. He learns to walk a little slower, matching his stride to her still clumsy, rough, imperfect legs, and plays the piano for her as she sings, discovering that 88 keys make more chords than he thought.

[Writer Rewind (81)] The ‘Enchanting’ world led by Han Woo-ri, author of ‘The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938’

news_1683858651_1232947_m_1.jpeg

<Editor's Note> You can enjoy the drama more abundantly if you understand the author's view of the work and world. Artists give familiarity with similar colors in each work, such as genre, message, and development method to solve it, but also show growth through appropriate variations. It also surprises you with an unexpected transformation. We will help you understand more deeply by digging into the filmography of the writers of the works that are currently being aired.

Writer Han Woo-ri, who worked as a writer for SBS' 'I Want to Know That', expanded her field of activity into drama through the OCN drama 'Children of a Lesser God' in 2018. It is a drama in which two detectives track down conspiracies and secrets related to an unprecedented mass death.

Afterwards, through the tvN drama 'The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox', She challenged the complex genre of fantasy action romance and built a fascinating world view and was loved. Unlike 'Children of a Lesser God', which used the experience of a writer in a current affairs program to convey social messages, it was an artist who broadened the genre spectrum by interestingly capturing the story of a nine-tailed fox who settled in the city and a producer chasing him.

‘The Tale of a Gumiho’ is currently expanding its world view through ‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’. This time, it is a fantasy action action drama in which a nine-tailed fox, who made an emergency landing in the age of chaos in 1938, unfolds to return to the modern age.

◆ From investigations to fantasy… Han Woo-ri's charming worldview

A writer's first drama, 'Children of a Lesser God' is a drama that raises awareness by digging into the reality of a pseudo-religion that commits evil deeds in collusion with vested interests. The theme consciousness and lively details of this drama were also possible because a writer had experience in current affairs programs.

However, the elite detective Cheon Jae-in (Kang Ji-hwan), who only believes in facts, logic, and numbers, and Kim Dan (Kim Ok-bin), a mysterious detective who sees things not to be seen, develop an interesting process of solving the case together with two different people. He also clearly showed his potential as a drama writer.

In particular, in the beginning of the drama, before the reality of the pseudo-heretical cult 'Cheonin Church' is revealed, it creates a mysterious atmosphere and heightens tension, while watching the process of solving the case in their own way by geniuses and Dan Kim. It also received favorable reviews for its tension-filled development unique to investigations.

In particular, the synergy created by the scientific investigation of a genius and Dan Kim, who demonstrates his ability to foresee the moment of crisis, gave a different fun than other investigations.

‘The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox’ was another drama that attracted attention for its unique worldview. Although there have been dramas based on the theme of gumiho, the drama secured its freshness by switching the idea of setting Lee Dong-wook, a male actor, as gumiho instead of an actress. In addition, it was fun to experience the unique worldview of 'The Tale of a Gumiho', such as the setting in which a gumiho who lost a loved one quits his position as a mountain god and becomes a warrior of the three provinces and waits for the reincarnation of his loved one.

Accordingly, She is currently expanding his worldview by meeting viewers again with ‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’. This time, the nine-tailed fox is active back in 1938. His relationship with his younger brother Lee Rang (played by Kim Bum), whom he had to fight for a long time, as well as the activities of the new villain Ryu Hong-ju (played by Kim So-yeon), etc.

Above all, as it is set during the Japanese colonial era, it is predicted that it will melt even the pain of the times, raising expectations for the unique worldview of 'The Tale of a Gumiho 1938'.

I hope they finish this plot soon and I hope they give her something else to do in this drama. I should remain optimistic. No way they will waste Hong Joo in this drama. I liked the episode and I will comment tomorrow. One thing.... where did the comedy go? :w00t: Just a few funny scenes and some questions answered.

A few thoughts about Episode 3

I am very curious who saved Mu young from his punishment? It was Taluipa`s husband ? He is my number one suspect. LOL BTW, he is having any powers? What is his job beside being the husband of Taluipa? I like how well he is getting with Hong Joo. He likes her.
I still believe that Mu Young came to the past to save Hong Joo. I have a feeling that Mu Young will die in the end of the drama and Hong Joo will steal the stone to go to the past. LOL
I liked the scene where brothers play like children, the story of the little girl who was made Saetani was sad. I like how Lee Yeon starts to realise the concequenses giving up the duty as a mountain god. But he saved her from the cursed in the end. I liked how Hong Joo protected her girls even if she does not open up to them, she cares for them deeply. All scenes of Mu young and Hong Joo. I liked how she told him that both her friends were not around when she needed them. So true.
I also liked how Hong Joo pointed out that she is getting punished for killing a human but Lee Yeon killed more and he is fine.

I still believe that Mu Young came to the past to save Hong Joo. I have a feeling that Mu Young will die in the end of the drama and Hong Joo will steal the stone to go to the past. LOL

So the actual Mu Young of 1938 is a stone (trapped in time…?) And someone in present day freed Mu Young so that he could act out his revenge? I didn’t think Hong Joo was dead in present day, just not active, but that’s a possibility. :(

There will probably be a scene of Hong Joo really crying later on.
I also liked how Yeon realized how much he trouble he brought by abandoning his position. That little girl was a monster for so long.

That was a really roomy well to swim in lol. I guess Yeon can be a little rest assured that Rang won’t be alone when he leaves, but Idk how long the mermaid will last.

In many k-dramas, the Japanese are always the villain and this is no different as it's set during the colonial period. It also is due to the dark history between the 2 countries as well.

The highlight of this series is really the eye candy of the brothers LoL - Yeon, Rang. I am not interested in anythin' else tbh.

Kim So Yeon as Hong Joo is hitting it out of the park with her savagery and fashion. I want her bag LoL!

Lee Dong Wook, Kim Bum, And Hwang Hee Unexpectedly Help Take Care Of A Baby In “Tale Of The Nine-Tailed 1938”

May 14, 2023

tvN’s “Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938” dropped new stills ahead of the upcoming episode!

“Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938” is a sequel to the hit 2020 drama “Tale of the Nine-Tailed,” which told the story of the male gumiho (mythical nine-tailed fox) Yi Yeon (Lee Dong Wook) in the present day. However, in the new sequel, he unexpectedly finds himself back in 1938, and he embarks on an eventful adventure in his quest to return to the present.

Spoilers

In the previous episode, Yi Yeon faced great crisis when he was cursed by a spirit of a young child, but he was able to undo the curse by remembering the child’s name. Furthermore, Yi Rang (Kim Bum) and Goo Shin Joo (Hwang Hee) were saved despite nearly drowning due to the red-and-white masked man, who was previously revealed to be Cheon Moo Young (Ryu Kyung Soo).

The newly released stills depict Yi Yeon, Yi Rang, and Goo Shin Joo walking the streets together while looking lost as to what to do. Furthermore, Goo Shin Joo is pushing a baby stroller in front of him, making them quite an unlikely trio. In the upcoming episode, the three will somehow end up having to raise an abandoned baby.

More stills depict Yi Yeon and Yi Rang looking at peace, smiling brightly while being absorbed with playing with bubbles. However, danger still lurks, and viewers are curious to see if the three will be able to safely raise the baby.

The next episode of “The Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938” will air on May 14 at 9:20 p.m. KST.

I also liked how Yeon realized how much he trouble he brought by abandoning his position. That little girl was a monster for so long.

Yes, the Mu Young was transformed into a stone. He was really depressed that he went mad and distroyed everything in his mountain as much as he protected before. It was a huge crime and he knew he deserved the punishment.

Hong Joo was surprised to find out what he did because he was the most gentle from the mountain gods. Hong Joo and Mu Young are really lonely and bitter. She had her brothers and parents but they all died. We could see why she is so harsh to the poor, good people who could not protect themselves. She has a trauma from the past. No matter how stong she is, she can`t proctect everybody. She is tough with her girls but she cares from them. I also think she will cry really bad as it seems that she is keeping everything inside, acting all strong.

Mu young had an older brother but Lee Yeon killed him. Perhaps he deserved punisment but it doesn`t matter for him. He was the only member of the family. Lee Yeon would be mad as hell if someone will kill Lee Rang, and his brother was not an angel either.

Let see who saved Mu Young in 2020. It could be someone powerful for a specific mission or it was someone from a mistake. I even thought that Taluipa`s husband could be the one but I don`t know how powerful he is.

Yes, Hong Joo could be around in 2020 or not. I believe she died in 1938 and that`s why Mu young came in the past. I think she fought Japanese monster all by herself and because she did not have help, she lost her life. But If I am wrong, the better. I hope Hong Joo is well.

Unless there is another reason why he came to 1938, I don`t believe he came to 1938 to revenge his brother. Mu Young could have killed Lee Yeon in 2020 and it was easier for him, without complication of stealing the guardian stone.

I also believe that all three will fight together with foreigner monsters in the end. They are powerful and they collect items to increase their power.

I liked the relationship between Hong Joo and Taluipa`s husband . He likes her. And when the stone was stolen he said it must be a reason for that. :D But he act clueless and maybe he is not the one.

I am curious about the case of episode 4. I liked the story of Saetani. I was emotional to see how she praid for the mountain god to appear to save her but he never come.

Hong Joo and, especially, Mu Young are making Lee Yeon`s life difficult at Myoyeongak. Without those events, he will be like on a vacation. :w00t: But I am glad he has time to spend with his brother. Hong Joo has to protect her girls and her business. I hope we`ll see more of their dinamic.
