The First Responders: Episodes 2-3

by quirkycase

FR03-00004.jpg

Our joint response team starts learning how to work together and manage their differences. There’s no shortage of emergencies for them to handle, keeping them busy and exhausted. But not every situation gets a happy ending, and our team members have to live with the sometimes dire consequences of their decisions.

EPISODES 2-3 WEECAP

Some of the ice starts to thaw between Ho-gae and his new coworkers Seol and Do-jin, although they still butt heads over their competing priorities. Do-jin and Seol are all about the victims and patients. Ho-gae, on the other hand, prioritizes solving the crime and gets frustrated when Seol and Do-jin trample all over his crime scene in their rush to treat victims.

Despite Ho-gae’s callous demeanor, he’s not immune to victims’ pain. It seems more like he’s laser-focused on solving the crime because it’s the only way he knows how to help. Seol, in particular, looks like she’s warming to him a bit after watching him work; at the very least, she finds him equal parts annoying and amusing.

The First Responders: Episodes 2-3

Ho-gae and Seol get the chance to work more closely together on the first case of the week. The team is called in when a mother can’t reach her young teenage daughter Hyun-seo who locked her out of their home. Our trio breaks in and rushes to get the girl to the hospital after realizing she drank poison.

The mom is rather blasé about it since Hyun-seo seems okay after vomiting, and it’s not the first time she’s done something like this. But this time is different. Oxygen causes the specific poison Hyun-seo took to speed up organ failure, leaving Seol devastated since she put the girl on oxygen in the ambulance. There’s nothing they can do, and a terrified Hyun-seo dies in the hospital minutes later.

It’s awful and heartbreaking for everyone involved, but Seol takes it particularly hard due to guilt. There’s no way she could’ve known giving the girl oxygen would be detrimental, but it must feel awful. When you have to make snap decisions based off your best guess in a crisis, there are bound to be wrong calls, despite your best efforts.

When Ho-gae decides there’s something amiss, Seol jumps in to help him solve the case. He finds threatening texts on the girl’s phone and suspects a sex-related crime and subsequent blackmail. Ho-gae asks to test Hyun-seo’s body before cremation, which earns him a slap from her mother. He’s shocked and impressed when empathetic Do-jin gets permission after one heartfelt conversation with the mother.

Ho-gae’s hunch was half right. After some sleuthing, they figure out that the culprit is an incredibly unnerving fellow classmate of Hyun-seo’s. He tricked Hyun-seo into debt, getting her hooked on a gambling app and then loaning her cash with exorbitant interest. Then, he blackmailed her into silence and coerced her into taking risqué photos as further blackmail.

When Hyun-seo refused to give him her mom’s bank account info, he goaded her to commit suicide. Then, when she actually drank the poison, he ran off, leaving her alone to die. Jesus. And this kid is in middle school! They can’t charge him with anything since he’s only 13, but Ho-gae makes sure to put the fear of God into him.

Hyun-seo’s tragedy makes Ho-gae think of another teen with the same name who also died. We don’t get the full story yet, but it’s obviously hero backstory trauma that will come into play later. Because although this is sort of an ensemble drama, it’s clear that Ho-gae is our central character.

His shady father CHIEF PROSECUTOR JIN (Jo Seung-yeon) looms in the background, unhappy that his son became an incoercible cop rather than a lawyer. He’s got ties to the powerful, rich criminal MA TAE-HWA (Lee Do-yub) who warns Chief Prosecutor Jin to keep his unwieldy son in line – he’s out on bail after Ho-gae arrested him, and Tae-hwa is not a happy camper.

“The First Responders” Writer Teases Love Line In Season 2, Raves About Cast’s Chemistry, And More

With the ongoing success of SBS’s “The First Responders,” writer Min Ji Eun has explained her thoughts on the drama!

Starring Kim Rae Won, Son Ho Jun, and Gong Seung Yeon, SBS’s new Friday-Saturday drama “The First Responders” is about members of the police force, fire department, and paramedic team as they come together to help their city in any way they can.

Although the drama is only three episodes in, “The First Responders” has seen peaks of viewership ratings surpassing 10 percent with each broadcast, highlighting the show’s popularity.

Regarding the process of planning and writing the drama, writer Min Ji Eun shared, “The very first time I thought of the item ‘The First Responders’ was the moment I personally witnessed a fire station right next to a police station in Busan. In the late night, their lights were shining brightly. In that moment, I thought about the image of firefighters and police officers who keep their lights on late into the night and run out for others no matter the time.”

She elaborated that this imagery made her think about things like their relationships with one another, the true atmosphere in these stations, and the banter between these officers who fight for the same purpose, but inevitably have different values and rules.

When asked about the main cast’s synchronization with their roles, Min Ji Eun commented, “While planning the characters, I decided on the imaginary MBTI [Myers-Briggs Type Indicator] of each lead. Jin Ho Gae [Kim Rae Won] was ENTP, Bong Do Jin [Son Ho Jun] ENFJ, and Song Seol [Gong Seung Yeon] ISFJ.” She then excitedly remarked, “To say that the casting of these three actors surpasses 100 percent synchronization and is 1,000 percent is not sufficient enough.”

Even before the premiere of Season 1, “The First Responders” was confirmed for a second season. To explain this decision, Min Ji Eun shared, “They say that each year, approximately 13 million reports are filed with police departments, and approximately 10 million with fire departments. Within those countless cases, the various emotions of conflict, greed, love, and hate between humans are likely swirling around.”

She concluded that because these countless cases exist, there was a desire to show a longer process of these emergency departments through multiple seasons.

At the Season 1 press conference, lead actor Kim Rae Won teased that he was anticipating his character’s love line with Song Seol in the second season. In response to this, Min Ji Eun vaguely remarked, “There’s a policeman who has caught countless criminals but does not know how to catch the woman he holds dear in his heart, a firefighter who has extinguished fires countless times but does not know how to put out the fire in his heart, and a paramedic who treats others’ wounds well but does not know how to treat the wounds in her own heart.”

She continued, “If a fire occurs, police officers have to call 119 too, and when firefighters encounter crimes, they must also call 112, but will they be able to call each other? In this series, I figure that the direction of the future season’s love line will be homework that I’ll have to create together with the viewers.”

Lastly, the drama’s producers commented, “The First Responders’ is a project that could not have been created without the outstanding imagination, detailed composition, and meticulous research of writer Min Ji Eun. In the future too, there will be an overflow of unpredictable episodes. We plan to capture heart-pounding tension, exhilarating fun, and heartwarming humanism, so we ask for your consistent interest.”

Episode 4 of “The First Responders” will air on November 25 at 10 p.m. KST.

I like the cast. The cases are interesting and brutal but Detective Hogae's way of solving the cases

is unusual but effective.

I wonder why the part-time worker in the convenience story is important to the chaebol and if Hogae knows it.

hmm..a love triangle...

The First Responders: Episodes 4-5

by quirkycase

FRwk3-00007.jpg

It’s another intense week as our response team handles a tough case involving a child that leaves them all reeling. In addition, our brash cop begins his own sting operation that goes awry. Thankfully, he’s got dedicated, competent colleagues ready to help.

EPISODES 4-5 WEECAP

We jump right back into the hit-and-run case, and wow is it heavier than I expected. Fair warning, this case is rough, mostly because the victim is a child. Thankfully, the little girl Ye-seul is alive after being hit and flung onto the bus stop roof, although only just. Seol risks punishment for going beyond her role when she performs an emergency operation in the moving ambulance, but it saves little Ye-seul’s life.

Chief Baek is particularly riled – we learn later his daughter was the victim of a hit and run years ago – and leaves no stone unturned to find the vehicle. Once they manage to locate the driver, they find him attempting suicide in his car, wracked with guilt.

Then, things take a darker turn. Ye-seul’s medical scans show evidence of long-term abuse. Ho-gae does some digging and suspects the mother’s ex-boyfriend. She tells the police that the man was a con artist who ran off with her money after they started getting more serious.

The First Responders: Episodes 4-5

Ho-gae and the team find the man after tracking down his fake name and burner phone. And what do you know, it’s the hit-and-run driver. Even stranger is that the mother happened to see the driver when he was brought into the hospital after his suicide attempt and attacked him. But she didn’t say a word about knowing him.

Not only did the mom not mention knowing the assailant, but she also lied about how the accident happened. (My gut says this is a money-making scheme, but I so want to be wrong.) They find video evidence from a passing deliveryman that shows it wasn’t an accident at all – the couple worked together to intentionally hit the little girl.

In a sickening twist, the mom and her boyfriend have been injuring Ye-seul for years to collect insurance money. It’s horrifying and disgusting how they so carefully orchestrated the “accident,” trying to make her lose a foot to get a larger payout.

The truly heartbreaking part is that Ye-seul was so desperate to please her mom, she willingly participated in her own injury all these years. Watching her cry that she’ll “do better” after they failed to break her foot is gut wrenching. The reason this time led to such severe injuries is that Ye-seul was so eager to please, she ran toward the car when the boyfriend drove at her a second time.

This case made me SO angry and has been the most emotionally difficult case by far. Everything was so calculated – both the abuse and the coverup with the fake suicide attempt and the concerned mother act. Ye-seul means nothing more than her profit value to them.

Although there’s no possible happily-ever-after in a case like this, thankfully, Ye-seul wakes up without permanent brain injury. Ho-gae and the team arrest the appalling couple, and then Ho-gae kindly pays little Ye-seul’s medical bills. Seol is impressed, but Ho-gae thinks it’s only natural since he put her mom in prison.

“The First Responders” released some shocking stills for Episode 6!

Starring Kim Rae Won, Son Ho Jun, and Gong Seung Yeon, “The First Responders” is a drama about members of the police force, fire department, and paramedic team as they come together to help their city in any way they can. The drama highlights the teamwork these three departments work hard to maintain.

Spoilers

Following some stills the drama released earlier showing Jin Ho Gae abruptly arrested after he was falsely accused of being an arsonist and a murderer, the newly released photos have him actually arriving at his worst nightmare: jail.

The first two photos depict Jin Ho Gae entering jail wearing a suit that tells viewers he is a prisoner awaiting trial. Although trying his best to put up a good front, the look on his face shows signs of fear and helplessness. How can he not when all the prisoners’ eyes are on him like he’s fresh meat in a tiger cage? After all, Jin Ho Gae is the detective with the highest arrest rate and the people he’s thrown in jail could fill up a truck.

Kim-Rae-Won1.jpeg

httThe other photos capture Jin Ho Gae surrounded by prisoners who look big and tough. Tension is rising to see how Jin Ho Gae will cope with the fierce confrontation as he fights alone against a large group of inmates who are more than eager to get to him. Questions are also mounting over how Jin Ho Gae can get out of this sticky situation when all the evidence appears to be pointing at him as the culprit, and what the real reason is behind Jin Ho Gae being suspected as a murderer and arsonist.

Kim-Rae-Won3.jpeg

The production team remarked, “The sixth episode, which will air on December 2, will depict Jin Ho Gae’s turbulent entry into jail,” adding, “Please don’t miss it because it will present Kim Rae Won’s stellar performance and an unconventional story that will keep you guessing.”

“The First Responders” Ratings Return To All-Time High As “Reborn Rich” Takes The Night Off

SBS’s “The First Responders” enjoyed a significant rise in viewership in last night!

On December 2, viewership ratings for the action thriller starring Kim Rae Won, Son Ho Jun, and Gong Seung Yeon climbed back up to the drama’s personal all-time high. According to Nielsen Korea, the latest episode of “The First Responders” scored an average nationwide rating of 9.4 percent, matching its personal record from its second episode.

The nearly 2 percent jump in the drama’s ratings may be partially attributed to the fact that JTBC’s hit drama “Reborn Rich,” which airs in an overlapping time slot, did not air a new episode last night.

The next episode of “The First Responders” will air on December 3 at 10 p.m. KST, while “Reborn Rich” will return to air just half an hour later at 10:30 p.m. KST.

The JTBC K-drama "Reborn Rich" - airing three days a week - canceled the schedule for its 7th episode, which was supposed to be broadcasted on 2 December, due to the  South Korea vs Portugal World Cup match.

JTBC mentioned, "We've decided to take a break due to the schedule of the global sporting event that the nation is paying close attention to."

The fantasy drama will resume its 3-episode-per-week schedule from next week. The K-drama also received its highest rating of all-time - 14.88% - for its 6th episode that aired on 27 November.

Similarly to "Reborn Rich", Kang Ha Neul's melodrama "Curtain Call" also canceled its schedule for its 8th episode, which was set to air on 28 November. It was broadcasted on 29 November instead. The KBS drama also postponed its episode schedule due to World Cup coverage.

Meanwhile, despite the World Cup excitement, Kim Rae Won's "The First Responders'' managed to bag its highest ratings of all time this week. According to Nielsen Korea, the K-drama got an average nationwide rating of 9.4% on 2 December, which is the same as its second episode.

Unlike other K-dramas, the SBS series did not cancel its episode this week.

The First Responders: Episodes 6-7

by quirkycase

https://www.dramabeans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/FRwk4-00018.jpg

It’s time for our evil chaebol to take the stage as he schemes to get rid of his nemesis once and for all. Meanwhile, our dogged cop finds himself at the center of a new case in ways he did not expect. It’ll take all his wits and help from his newfound friends and frenemies to get out of this newest scrape.

EPISODES 6-7 WEECAP

I knew at some point we’d dive headfirst into the whole Tae-hwa subplot, and that point is now. We only get one case this week, and it starts with a fire at a diner. While Do-jin and team put out the large fire, Ho-gae rescues a teenage boy from a nearby building filled with smoke.

Inside the diner, Do-jin finds one fire victim. We’re treated to an overly detailed autopsy – it involves rib cutters is all I’ll say about that – and discover the man didn’t die in the fire but was strangled prior. Silly me thinking it might just be your average fire, because we all know fires only happen when murder is afoot. It’d be nice to have some average, non-murdery cases. I find it hard to believe every emergency involves murder and nefarious mayhem. Sometimes, probably most of the time really, a fire is just a fire.

We do get to see Do-jin in his element here, annoying Ho-gae with his impressive ability to recreate the burned-down crime scene. Ho-gae feels vindicated when he’s the one to find blood on the scene, though. The only problem is, when they run the DNA test, it comes up as Ho-gae’s blood.

And that’s not all. Every piece of evidence they find neatly points to Ho-gae: a shoeprint that matches his, a lighter fluid bottle with his fingerprints, and nearby CCTV footage that shows Ho-gae near the crime scene right before the fire. (And that’s why you shouldn’t go into remote areas alone when you get mysterious phone calls.)

Naturally, Ho-gae is arrested. It all screams set-up by Tae-hwa, but it’s so meticulously planned that it’d be hard not to suspect Ho-gae. Tack on his temper and violent streak, and all but Ho-gae’s current, closest teammates are convinced of his guilt. Seol and Pil are especially upset by the framing, but even Do-jin works extra hard to try to exonerate Ho-gae.

It’s a good thing because prison isn’t exactly the safest place for Ho-gae since he put about half the prisoners in there. He’s greeted with a beating and a shanking, in that order. Ever the risky opportunist, Ho-gae uses his hospital transport as a chance to escape. He gets a message to Seol through the kid he saved from the fire.

She doesn’t hesitate to show up to Ho-gae’s hiding place and treat his multiple stab wounds to the abdomen. Despite the risk of being charged with aiding and abetting, she sticks around to help him figure out who the real culprit is.

Once they find the likely culprit by matching his shoes to the shoeprint found near the fire, they waltz into the police station with the man in tow. Of course, it’s not that simple since Tae-hwa and his people are hella prepared. But Ho-gae has a lot of friends who have his back and come together to invalidate the evidence against him so the prosecutor in cahoots with Tae-hwa has no choice but to let Ho-gae go.

Love the latest episode! But I went to rewatch the fighting scene between Jindo dog and the bad guy on the rooftop, both their hands were clearly not cuffed together when they were fighting, so how did they get cuffed just before the bad guy fell off?

Starring Kim Rae Won, Son Ho Jun, and Gong Seung Yeon, “The First Responders” is a drama about members of the police force, fire department, and paramedic team as they come together to help their city in any way they can. The drama highlights the teamwork these three departments work hard to maintain.

The new stills preview Jin Ho Gae (Kim Rae Won) from seven years ago on his way to work. Jin Ho Gae, who was working as a traffic police officer at the time, is handed eggs from a girl on the street. Unlike now, Jin Ho Gae exudes positive vibes with a bright smile on his face where there is not a single scar.
