This year was another stellar year for K-drama and general Korean content at Netflix, following a 500 million-dollar investment in South Korean production stages and content in the past two years. The streaming platform reported that over 60% of their users watched Korean content in 2022. In the past year, Korean content has made it on Netflix’s Weekly Top 10 chart in more than 90 countries—and three of its top 10 most popular non-English shows ever are from South Korea.

Whether you’re a complete newcomer looking to dip your toe in Netflix’s pool of Korean dramas or a seasoned fan looking to expand your list of shows to watch, here are the 10 best shows that dropped this year. All titles are available to watch on Netflix USA and are listed in no particular order.

Thirty-Nine

Grab your tissues: Son Ye-jin (Crash Landing On You) returns to the small screen in a tearjerker about the lifelong friendship between three women on the cusp of turning 40. The trio—made up of Cha Mi-jo (played by Son), Jeon Chan-young (Jeon Mi-do) and Jang Joo-hee (Kim Ji-hyun)—find their friendship put to the test when one of them is diagnosed with a terminal illness. The lows these women face are offset by the highs that come with finding small moments of joy as they support each other through the pain of inevitable loss. The show is a balm for the soul and viewers couldn’t get enough: Thirty-Nine was on Netflix’s Global Weekly Top 10 for five weeks this spring.

Top 10 Best Slow-Burn K-Dramas That You Should Add To Your Watchlist

MARCH 14, 2023

Everybody loves a good K-Drama that has you sitting on the edge of your seat to see what happens next. What better way to do that than adding slow-burn K-Dramas to your watchlist?

Slow-burn K-Dramas are characterized by a sense of yearning or angst that underlies a love line. In other words, it's when the lead characters' love line feels like it's playing out super slowly either because they are late to realize their feelings or there are other obstacles in their way. Their love seems to have a slower build-up than the average K-Drama romance.

“Thirty, Nine”

Top 10 Best Slow-Burn K-Dramas That You Should Add To Your Watchlist

JTBC

Cast: Son YeJin, Jeon MiDo, Kim JiHyun, and more.

Summary: A drama depicting the real human experience of the friendship, love, and life of three women who are about to reach 40.

Watch Because: This slow burn is rather bittersweet. It comes from all fronts of the story, romantic or not, and leaves you pensive throughout the drama. There is also this sense of an impending end that you know is coming and yet it feels like time within the drama is crawling. We mean this in the most positive way. The sadness of this drama puts the 'burn' in 'slow-burn' yet leaves you with a wholesome and compassionate impression of the story and its characters.

Just binged this wonderful sisterhood drama. It's been on my to-watch list. Wish I had watched it when it was airing, but never too late anyway.

So heartwarming, inspiring, and also, heartwrenching. Anyone who watches this drama and could stop your tear ducts from being activated, drop me a message. I have a "reward" for ya lol. I cried buckets, needless to say. But it was so darn good - the crying, the sisterhood, and the romance!

Love it! Highly recommend it!

9 Romantic K-dramas That Navigate Dating as an Adult

JUNE 21, 2023

BY REGINA KIM | NETFLIX

Few genres of television capture the magic of teenage romance quite like K-dramas. Between sweet and innocent crushes, intense love triangles and the emotional drama that comes with balancing high school and a semblance of a social life, many K-dramas expertly mix relatability and nostalgia with the right amount of melodrama and fantasy. That’s probably why teen dramas likeLove Alarm, Boys Over Flowers andInheritors have become undeniable fan favorites over the years.

But lately, Korean storytellers have been crafting a wider variety of romantic dramas that diverge from the typical shows that K-drama aficionados are used to, with steamier rom-coms, unconventional love stories, and workplace and slice-of-life tales, as well as realistic portrayals of modern dating — especially later in life.

Thirty-Nine

A scene from ‘Thirty-Nine’

Thirty-Nine is a heartfelt romantic drama that follows the lives of three 39-year-old best friends, Cha Mi-jo, Jeong Chan-young and Jang Joo-hee, as they try to navigate work, love and loss. Mi-jo (played by the acclaimed Crash Landing on You star Son Ye-jin) is a smart career woman who was adopted by a caring, wealthy family and now runs her own dermatology clinic. Serendipitous events start bringing her and fellow dermatologist Kim Seon-u (Yeon Woo-jin) closer together. Chan-young (played by the charismatic Jeon Mi-do of Hospital Playlist), an acting coach who once dreamed of becoming an actress, cannot get over her ex-boyfriend Kim Jin-seok (Lee Mu-saeng from The Silent Sea), who is now a married man. Joo-hee (Kim Ji-hyun) works as a cosmetics manager at a department store. Because she’s so shy, she’s never been in a romantic relationship, but that all begins to change when she meets restaurateur Park Hyeon-jun (Lee Tae-hwan).

Thirty-Nine takes a realistic — if at times painful — look at life, love and friendship for those who are approaching middle age. It beautifully illustrates how wonderful life can be, despite its ups and downs, if you have true friends who are willing to do anything for you.
