Yes, I think the message is: there is no monster worse than a human being. Something like that.

I am enjoying this show, but there is this... weirdly detached quality. I'm seriously kind of in love with Han Hyo-Ju now, but it's... weird? unique? ... that both her and the ML remain large unfazed and nonchalant about this horrifying thing that is happening. She mostly just has a disgusted look on her face. And she seems to be sleeping and eating just fine. Like, this is just another day in her life.

(I would be a basket case.)

I think that’s what makes this show work.  The detached quality where everyone sticks to their own agenda in spite of the dangers all around.  Not everyone is in a mad panic cowering in their apartments.  It’s almost as if they are living some alternate reality?  Like they expect to come out of this alive?  The writer’s brother is still harping on about his sister’s apartment?  The snooty Ahjumma who wants to be apartment rep?  Who does that during a zombie apocalypse?

Btw I think I may have worked out why snooty Ahjumma is so hung up about getting the apartment rep position.  We are shown that she’s not all that she seems?  Her apartment is bare?  Her “I-am-better-off-than-you-renters” is all a facade?  They don’t look particularly well off at all?  She looks to have sunk all their funds into the apartment so she can’t afford for property prices to drop and affect resale value.  I am not sure if her reason for getting the apartment block rep position is so that

1. she can control the funds and possibly siphon some off for her own use

or

2. as apartment rep, she has the power to order landscaping and maintenance of the grounds to make it more appealing for buyers.

Or maybe both?

This drama is humorous almost?  In a dark warped way?  Like when Evil Dermatologist appears from his bathroom after frenzied washing of the blood off his face, and his mistress just sits unperturbed on the couch with a golf club handy in case?   He doesn’t seem to even bother to yell at her for her audacity?  They just sit there and have an almost normal conversation about his wife?   There’s also something strange about the mistress?  I thought she was after his money but she’s looking for something else?  She went to the freezer and looked through all the wads of money?  And didn’t bother to take any?  What is she looking for?

The evil dermatologist from 601 has so far been extremely lucky: he escaped his wife going after him, got away from gym instructor with YH's help and surprisingly avoided anyone infected in the basement when he went to find the remaining supply of next. For sure he plans to use it with other tenants. Karma's gonna catch up to him real soon and my guess is that he will be bitten by representative ahjumma

Happiness: Episode 5

by quirkycase

Happiness05-00953.jpg

Skepticism further divides our already divided residents, and they begin turning on each other in fear. Our leads struggle to keep things afloat and ensure everyone’s safety, particularly with a certain resident scheming for his own benefit. The stress is a lot for everyone to take, and even our steadfast cop finds himself feeling the strain.

EPISODE 5 RECAP

https://www.dramabeans.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Happiness05-00042.jpg

Sae-bom rushes back to the apartment and checks on Seo-yoon (while also retrieving a bat in case she needs to beat back a zombie horde). They no longer have cell or television service. All that’s on TV is a message telling everyone to stay put and wait for rescue, as if they have a choice.

Back in the lobby, trainer Seung-beom is frantically barricading the doors while Yi-hyun and Jung-kook stand guard. Young-ok enters and is horrified to see this undignified state of affairs.

Upstairs, Sung-shil wonders if her racing heart and itchy wound are signs of infection. Dong-hyun dismisses her symptoms as old age and heads out. He runs into siblings Hyun-kyung and Soo-min in the hall and gets excited to hear other buildings’ residents are infected.

Everyone makes their way to the basement where Yi-hyun and the cleaning ajumma show bloodstains on the door as proof that there really was a zombie. Naturally, Dong-hyun immediately starts recording.

Young-ok pulls Yi-hyun aside and seriously asks if he’s gunning for her building representative status. Pfft. Yi-hyun is speechless and assures her he couldn’t care less about that. He rushes over to stop everyone from stupidly opening the door, but they seem intent on checking things out for themselves.

Sae-bom arrives and flings open the door, saying whoever wants to go is free to leave. Suddenly, everyone get cold feet and decide it might be better to stay inside after all. Yi-hyun reminds Young-ok they’ll need to inform all the residents of the situation. Since there’s no intercom or internet right now, they’ll have to do it in person.

7 Types Of People You’ll Find In A Pandemic As Shown In Episodes 5-6 Of “Happiness”

7 Types Of People You’ll Find In A Pandemic As Shown In Episodes 5-6 Of “Happiness”

“Happiness” is back! Matters heat up in Building 101 of the Seyang Forest Le Ciel Apartments as infectees from the other buildings take control of the outdoors, cutting off our residents’ access to the boxed meals coming from Han Tae Seok’s (Jo Woo Jin) team outside. As Yoon Sae Bom (Han Hyo Joo) and Jung Yi Hyun (Park Hyung Sik) wade through the turbulent politics of managing so many big personalities in a cramped space, “Happiness” uses each personality type to comment on human selfishness and the lawlessness that results when societal rules are no longer useful.

Here are the seven types of personalities the show depicts as found in a pandemic:

The hypocrite

Spoiler

Bae-Hae-Sun.png

Oh Yeon Ok (Bae Hae Sun) initially refuses to believe that there are infectees running around outside at all. Only Sae Bom, Yi Hyun, and Kim Seung Beom (Joo Jong Hyuk) witness the initial attacks in the parking lot, which leave a bloody handprint as proof of anyone having been there at all. Thus, the other residents are more inclined to go along with Yeon Ok’s lead, especially since she’s the temporary building representative.

However, after seeing for herself that other infectees are indeed out there and will stop at nothing for a quick feed, Yeon Ok does a complete 180 and is willing to kill six residents, including Sae Bom and Yi Hyun, if it means that she is safe. Her airs and graces go out of the window as she screeches like a hen that no one can enter without her saying so. Thankfully, Seo Yoon (Song Ji Woo) is able to foil her plans, but it’s a stunning display of the hypocrisy people show in times of crisis, willing to risk other’s lives where they stand to gain and willing to throw those same people away where they could potentially be placed at risk.

The compassionate

Spoiler

happiness-141-e1637610272105.jpg

But not everyone is all that awful. Na Hyun Kung (Park Hee Bon) offers what food she has to the cleaning couple who temporarily reside in unit 201, as does Lawyer Kook’s (Park Hyung Soo) wife Shin So Yoon (Jung Woon Sun). Yi Hyun’s policeman mentor Kim Jung Look (Lee Joon Hyuk) ensures that the cleaning lady Nam Mi Jung has a place to stay for the night.

These same residents also vote to prevent Kim Seung Beom from being thrown off the building upon discovering that he’s infected. Despite the very large personalities of the more vile characters in “Happiness”, the quieter, compassionate residents end up being the silent majority, proving that not all is lost, even if a vampiric virus is sweeping the nation.

The egotist

Spoiler

Park-Hyoung-Soo.png

However, there are some people who manage to make everything about themselves. Lawyer Kook forgets that he has a wife five seconds after meeting Woo Sang Hee (Moon Ye Won) and pulls out every nasty trick in the playbook including peering up at her legs. She’s pretty used to the attention and more than happy to use it to her advantage, shamelessly flirting with him while rummaging through an unsuspecting Oh Joo Hyeong’s (Baek Hyun Jin) apartment for the mysterious object she’s lost.

Poor Shin So Yoon, unaware of her husband’s roving eye, even calls Sae Beom to help rescue this money-hungry wastrel from a deserved grave and is belittled for her trouble. When she dares have a different opinion from him, Lawyer Kook goes as far as to say that she’s nothing more than a secretary and that he should never have married her. Worst husband ever

The sleazy opportunist/psychopath

Spoiler

happiness-271-e1637610352691.jpg

But no husband is as bad as Oh Joo Hyeong. Having managed to kill his wife, this human trash can is quite pleased at the lockdown because it gives him time to get rid of anyone who knows the truth: specifically, Yi Hyun and Sae Bom. He eggs Yeon Ok on when she prevents their re-entry into the building, playing recordings of his wife’s screeches post-transformation. Hearing the sounds sets off a chain reaction that has all the infectees converging upon our main couple and could have killed them if it weren’t for Seo Yoon.

Joo Hyeong takes such pleasure in belittling everyone. He goes after Seung Bom, forces out the location of the remaining pills from him, triggers the man’s transformation, then attempts to kill him for it. He’s the very worst character in the show (tied only with Chairman Choi Seok Ju) and has had so many close calls at this point that it’s infuriating that he isn’t dead. Here’s hoping this cockroach dies soon. (Baek Hyun Jin’s doing such a good job as a villain that I hope he isn’t typecast!)

The unflappable

Spoiler

Han-Joon-Woo.png

Yet, amidst all this trash, are people like Andrew (Lee Joo Seung) and Kim Se Hun (Han Jun Woo), the t-shirt-requesting owner of unit 1501. Come what may, these people are unshakable. They stay calm during crises and are more than capable of taking care of themselves and others if need be. There appears to be more to Se Hun than meets the eye, with him having bought so much of the Next pill, but there’s no denying that he’s always been ready for the end since day one.

The soldier

Spoiler

Jo-Woo-Jin3-e1637610409177.jpeg

Han Tae Seok, however, is trying to stave off the end as much as he can. His wife has only a month more to live under present conditions, and there’s no cure in sight for this virus, now being called the Lytta virus. Pressure is piling as the number of infectees surge, bodies are carted off to the landfill without any place for storage, and protestors call for an end to the blockades. The latter group has Tae Seok between a rock and a hard place.

Spoiler
jo-woo-jin.gif

jo-woo-jin2.gif

If he lifts the blockades as the protestors wish and lets the infectees run free, the entire country will be infected within 72 hours minimum. If he admits to the government that none of their potential curses are working, the government will start killing all infectees in an attempt to stop the spread. Tae Seok doesn’t consider the infectees fully human, but he’s no hypocrite. He won’t save his wife and sit back as the government kills all other infectees. So he lies to the government and presses Lieutenant Lee Ji Soo (Park Joo Hee) to keep trying all possible curses because a soldier’s job is to think about the greater good. Tae Seok is willing to be the bad guy in everyone’s eyes if it means saving as many lives as he can, especially because he knows that he unwittingly helped this whole thing begin in the first place by getting Next approved for distribution.

The power couple

park-hyung-sik-han-hyo-joo51.gif

Finally, we have the power couple. The fearsome duo that weathers everything out together. Panic buying? In moderation. Protecting each other? Always.

Spoiler

Beating down bad guys? Only when necessary (and Oh Joo Hyeong really deserved it). And why not take turns beating down the same bad guy?

Even if Sae Bom disagrees with Yi Hyun’s overly kindhearted decisions (like accompanying the group that wants to go outside), she goes with him anyway because she’s not about to leave him on his own. And vice versa.

park-hyung-sik-han-hyo-joo7.gif

Lytta virus who? Lockdown or no lockdown, these two are going strong, ready to take on anything. And they’ll need that rock solid foundation, because Building 101’s first line of defense has been breached and a free-for-all is about to begin.

During the interview, Han Hyo Joo talked about her bold and perceptive character Yoon Sae Bom. She said, “As soon as I read the script, I thought she was no different from me. I liked how I was able to portray myself. Just like Yoon Sae Bom, I act first, think later, and my appetite is also similar to hers.”

Regarding her co-star Park Hyung Sik, she commented, “Park Hyung Sik has good energy that brightens his surroundings. When he comes to the set, everything automatically lights up.”

“Happiness” is Park Hyung Sik’s first post-military drama. The actor remarked, “[The drama] was attractive because the characters were simply and clearly expressed and the developments coolly unfolded. The action scenes also tried to capture survival-type actions that could be used when a real detective is faced with extreme situations”

Then he praised Han Hyo Joo, saying, “Sometimes she’s like an affectionate nuna, and at other times, she’s playful and free-spirited. Filming consumed a lot of my physical strength, but thanks to her, I was able to endure well.”

Ep 7 confirms he is a psychopath. I know the writer needs him for drama but PLEASE KILL HIM OFF!

It's so frustrated that I want to drop the drama couple times because of how stupid most of the residences are. I know that real life people are like that but they can't be THAT ignorant. I can tolerate the stupidity and ignorance of the streamer dude and his father, the lawyer, and representative lady but OMG this mf needs to go ASAP. I hate the main couple cannot do anything to this psychopath.

Moments where I rolled my eyes :expressionless: (Ep7)

Spoiler

- YH didn’t mention anything to Penthouse guy about the pills?  What harm could there be to tell him that they were dangerous?  As expected, he’s just a doomsday prepper.  He stockpiles everything.
- writer lady frees gym trainer.  At this point I am almost to the point of thinking she deserves to get bitten too?  .  It wasn’t even a convincing reason he gave her?  I thought she might’ve tried to trick her by saying something like, “I need to toilet”.  But no… she just frees him… after asking if he was thirsty…

Moments when I went

Spoiler

- SeoYoon (little girl).  She’s like a mini SB.  Street smart.  Reads people well.  Calm under pressure.  Picked up that HTS was up to no good when he tried to convince her to pressure SB to leaving the complex with him.

- Not sure if this should be here or in the category above but mistress should win some acting award for her damsel in distress gig in front of sleazy lawyer.

Moments when I wondered.

Spoiler

- why did the infected bail on religious hubby?  When he flashed the crucifix?

- why did they just obey Andrew when he told them to leave the rooftop?  HTS was flabbergasted when Andrew told him that.  Andrew had a hammer?  And he wears those glasses.

Something metal?  Or is something reflective?  So the infected see a reflection of themselves and it scares them off?  Is that it?  Hmm…

@WANGYEO I agree about the Evil Dermatologist.  I hope his mistress drinks some of that spiked water and turns on him and the sleazy lawyer.

Why the **** is Ju Hyung still here LoL!? Good on Seo Yoon for not lettin' that zombie guy into the apartment. Sheesh he's creepy af. He gain entry by tricking the residents with empathy etc.

I cannot believe Tae Seok allowed Sae Bom to be attacked. The punch Yi Hyun gave was SO satisfying!

I also liked how Yi Hyun gave that good for nothing streamer a good beating. His parents are just.. sigh. I give up LoL. I think the granny turns in next ep. Her stupid son probably will get it live on air for views/likes etc. Despicable.

The gym trainer was killed. This zombie disease is pretty funny actually. The infected appear to get back to normal after they turn. It's like hulk or somethin' they get triggered but can withhold themselves if they have the willpower. Though when that pastor held up his crucifix they recoiled ha-ha?! Are they religious LoL??

Btw did Tae Seok lie about Seo Yoon's mom's condition..?? There's 2 weeks left to finale. Hyung Shik was so cool when he stopped Tae Seok from taking Sae Bom away. What a man.

I think Tae Sook lied about Seo Yoons mums condition as a ploy to get her to agree to leave with him and convince Sae Bom to come with them. He was counting on the bond between SY & SB, but the smart little cookie got creepy liar vibes from him and didn’t fall for it.

Park Hyung Sik And Han Hyo Joo Try To Hunt For Peace In The Midst Of Being Surrounded By Troublemakers In “Happiness”

Happiness” has shared new stills from the upcoming episode!

“Happiness” is an apocalyptic urban thriller set in the near future inside an apartment building that is stratified by social standing. The high-rise apartment is sealed off when a new infectious disease emerges, and the drama depicts the fear, psychological battles, and desperate struggles for survival that ensue.

Han Hyo Joo stars in the drama as Yoon Sae Bom, a tactical agent in the Seoul Police Special Operations Unit, while Park Hyung Sik stars as detective Jung Yi Hyun, her former high school classmate who has feelings for her.

Spoilers

On the previous episode, tension escalated with infected patients invading the building and people going missing. Han Tae Suk (Jo Woo Jin), who had no other choice, visited Yoon Sae Bom at the quarantined apartment because she had the antibody necessary for the development of treatment. In return for getting tested, she requested he provide food and weapons. The episode ended with the someone opening the door of apartment 101 and allowing an infected patient to enter.

A new glimpse of the upcoming episode shows that things aren’t going to get any better. In one photo, Yoon Sae Bom and Jung Yi Hyun are confronting Oh Joo Hyung (Baek Hyun Jin) with the problematic medication Next. He backs up to avoid them, but he has nowhere else to hide. Oh Joo Hyung was previously seen extracting the pill ingredients and diluting them into drinks. What is Oh Joo Hyung trying to achieve with Next, and what kind of events will his risky experiment call forth?

happiness-53.jpg

The atmosphere in the following photos are also unusual. Yoon Sae Bom and Jung Yi Hyun head outside, and the silence further heightens the sense of crisis. The apartment cleaner (Nam Mi Jung) gets surprised by something, and Yoon Sae Bom closely examines an object the woman gives her. The trace of someone wiping their blood hints that someone infected is lurking in apartment 101.

happiness-111.jpg

The production team hinted, “Survival in a situation with a declaration of martial law and no water and electricity will become increasingly catastrophic. People who have become sensitive due to anxiety will suspect trivial things, which will gradually lead to strong collisions. With the promised four days approaching, please wait and see if daily recovery will be possible or a bigger crisis will strike.”
