Won Bin Turns Down Role In Epic K-Drama With S$46mil Production Budget

12862674-won-bin-1.jpg?itok=-2S105Bk

Sorry, fans, but it looks like South Korean heartthrob Won Bin’s indefinite hiatus isn’t coming to an end just yet, despite promising recent developments.

Ever since his last role in 2010’s The Man from Nowhere (yes, it’s been a full decade), the 42-year-old has been more active as a brand spokesman and commercial model than an actor. To be honest, we can’t quite blame him — in 2018, it was revealed that he commands 600mil to 700mil won (about S$691,000 to S$806,000) per ad.

On Tuesday (Jun 23), Korean media broke the news that Won Bin had received an offer to star in an upcoming 16-episode drama called Bulgasal (the Hongkong media’s translation of the title literally means “Unkillable”).

This is no small-time serial: Bulgasal is said to boast an impressive production budget of 40bil won (S$46mil). The story centres on a seemingly immortal man who has lived for 600 years — hence the name of the show — and a woman who is repeatedly reincarnated while being able to remember the events of her past lives

According to industry sources, Won Bin had begun internal discussions about accepting the part, which made insiders believe that he was finally going to make his long-awaited return to the screen. However, even though he was impressed by the script, he decided to turn it down in the end as he felt that making his comeback with a TV series would be too big of a burden.

We wonder if it has something to do with the fact that his last television role was in 2002’s Friends. That’s 18 years ago. Perhaps he was worried that he wouldn’t be able to live up to everybody’s understandably high expectations?

Lee Joon and Lee Jin Wook might transform into mythical creatures for their next project!

On February 3, Ilgan Sports reported that Lee Joon would be starring in tvN’s “Bulgasal” (literal title) a drama Lee Jin Wook has been considering since last year.

Directed by Jang Young Woo of tvN’s 2016 drama “Entourage,” the series revolves around two characters. The first is a woman who has gone through several reincarnations over the course of 600 years and remembers all of her past lives. The second is a man named Dan Hwal who has lived as a bulgasal, a mythical creature that feeds off human blood and is cursed with immorality, for over 600 years. He used to be a human but is on the verge of losing the last remnants of humanity after so long a time. The only thing keeping him going is the desire for revenge against the woman that turned him into the monster he is today.

Lee Jin Wook has been offered the role of Dan Hwal, and a source from his agency BH Entertainment previously shared that the actor is positively reviewing the offer.

A source from Lee Joon’s agency Prain TPC also shared that the actor is positively reviewing an offer for a role in “Bulgasal.” If Lee Joon joins the cast, he will be taking on the character Ok Eul Tae, an insightful and manipulative bulgasal. He has enjoyed immorality for the past centuries and has accumulated immense wealth, which he uses to control politicians, businessmen, and the media. With his decadent beauty and overwhelming charisma, he has all the ingredients to be the most powerful figure in Korea. But because of a run-in with failure in the past, he hides the fact that he is a bulgasal and lives a subdued life in a small city.

The second is a man named Dan Hwal who has lived for over 600 years as a bulgasal, a mythical creature that feeds off human blood and is cursed with immortality. He used to be human but is on the verge of losing the last remnants of humanity after such a long a time. The only thing keeping him going is the desire for revenge against the woman who turned him into the monster he is today.

Kwon Nara is in talks for the role of Min Sang Un, who was once a bulgasal but is reincarnated as a human. Sports Chosun’s report states that after suffering the loss of her mother and twin sister at the hands of an unidentified murderer, Min Sang Un escapes with her younger sister Min Sa Ho and lives quietly in hiding. Although she works hard to conceal her name and identity, the appearance of a bulgasal alters her life of secrecy.

tvN shared a new behind-the-scenes video from the script reading for the upcoming weekend drama “Bulgasal” (literal title)!

“Bulgasal” is a fantasy drama about a woman who has experienced many reincarnations over the past 600 years while remembering all her past lives and a man who is immortal and has lived for over 600 years as a bulgasal, a mythical creature that feeds on human blood.

The new making-of video begins with the actors sharing their thoughts on the title. Kwon Nara and Lee Joon mention that they first thought of the word “bulgasari,” which means starfish in Korean, while Gong Seung Yeon, Jung Jin Young, and Park Myung Shin remark that they’ve heard of the term bulgasal in traditional folklore. UP10TION’s Kim Woo Seok shares that the title reminds him of immortality, and Lee Jin Wook finally explains that a bulgasal is an immortal being who doesn’t die or age that existed in ancient times on the Korean peninsula.

Lee Jin Wook will play the role of the bulgasal named Dan Hwal. He shares, “A really long time ago, he was human, but he experiences an incident that makes him a bulgasal, and he dreams of getting revenge. He’s a being who lives to get revenge.”

Kwon Nara will be taking on the role of Min Sang Woon, the woman who keeps getting reincarnated while fleeing from the bulgasal that is pursuing her. The actress reveals, “She has a lot of pain because she experienced many tragedies when she was young, but she’s a character who tries to win and overcome that pain.” Kwon Nara comments that the drama’s fantasy elements will intrigue viewers while Lee Jin Wook tosses the question, “Since he was born human and became a bulgasal, will immortality really be a blessing?”

Lee Joon will play Ok Eul Tae, whom he introduces as a refreshing and energetic person with a good personality. Lee Joon shares, “He’s a mysterious figure about whom nothing has been revealed yet.”

Gong Seung Yeon will transform into Dan Sol, Dan Hwal’s wife 600 years ago. The actress reveals, “She has a really special ability, so people are scared of Dan Sol and avoid her. She was forced to marry Dan Hwal by her father.”

Jung Jin Young introduces his character Dan Geuk, who is Dan Sol’s father. The actor shares, “He was a great general who was military officer 600 years ago.” Park Myung Shin plays Munyeo (a female shaman), who lived 600 years ago. Park Myung Shin explains, “She’s a character who predicts the entire process in which Dan Hwal becomes a bulgasal and watches out for him.” Finally, Kim Woo Seok shares, “I’ll be playing Nam Do Yoon, who doesn’t feel overpowered by the bulgasal and follows him around like he’s an older brother.”

'Invincible' Lee Jin-wook, legacy poster released 'Unique atmosphere'

image_readtop_2021_1062396_1636512169484

Jin-wook Lee (as Dan-hwal), Kwon Nara (as Min Sang-woon), Lee Jun (as Ok Eul-tae), Gong Seung-yeon (as Dansol), Jin-young Jeong (as Dan-geuk), Myeong-shin Park (as the maiden as Doyun Nam), and Woo-seok Kim (as Do-yun Nam) as the long time. In the midst of foretelling the entangled relationship, the legacy poster has been released, drawing more attention.

In the legacy poster, the modern image of Dan Hwa (Lee Jin-wook), who has lived 600 years from the past to the present, is contained. He was a warrior who defended the country in the past, but no longer wears armor that smells of battlefield, and he hid himself in the dark, dreaming of revenge in eternity where he could not die. In the sight of him walking alone with the bright light behind him in an alley where there are few people, not only the force that overwhelms the backlight but also the lonely loneliness is deep.
