“Youn’s Kitchen” is returning as “Youn’s Stay” (literal title)!

 

On December 22, a source from tvN confirmed that the network is launching “Youn’s Stay,” which is directed by Na Young Suk and Kim Se Hee. It will be a reality program set in a hanok (traditional Korean home) in South Jeolla Province.

 

The main cast of “Youn’s Kitchen” returns for this new spin on the format, with Youn Yuh Jung, Lee Seo Jin, Jung Yu Mi, and Park Seo Joon taking part. As previously confirmed, they’re joined by Choi Woo Shik, who starred alongside Jung Yu Mi this year in Na Young Suk’s reality show “Summer Vacation.” The cast of “Youn’s Stay” recently wrapped up filming in the county of Gurye.

 

 

The first season of “Youn’s Kitchen” featured the stars opening a restaurant on an island in Bali, Indonesia, and in the second season they did so on the Spanish island of Tenerife. Due to COVID-19, the show decided to film in Korea this year.

 

tvN stated, “There is not much travel happening between countries due to COVID-19, but there are foreigners who have come to Korea during the COVID-19 period after being appointed by their business or for their studies, and they are not able to enjoy the atmosphere of Korea. We wanted to create an opportunity for them to experience Korea’s charms and the beauty of hanok while doing a homestay in a hanok.”

‘Youn’s Stay’ hopes to give foreigners little taste of Korea

New tvN entertainment show “Youn’s Stay” plans to bring the warmth of hanok, or traditional Korean houses, to the small screen this winter.

 

 

In the program from star director Na Young-seok, veteran actor Youn Yuh-jung runs a hanok guest house in Gurye, South Jeolla Province, for foreigners who have been in Korea for less than a year. Guests include those who came to Korea on business or for education, as the COVID-19 situation hinders tourist travel.

 

While Youn’s previous program “Youn’s Kitchen” brought Korean tastes to other countries, this program gives visitors a taste of Korea in the most traditional setting, in the form of hanok.

 

The first season of “Youn’s Kitchen” was set in Indonesia while the second took place in Spain. The third season of “Youn’s Kitchen” was to have been shot abroad early last year, but the protracted pandemic situation forced a change of plan.

 

“If people who came to Korea during COVID-19 times had come at a better time, they would have been able to experience Korean culture and have diverse experiences,” said Na in a live broadcast Dec. 26. “Through their one-night stay in a hanok, I wanted to make them truly experience Korean culture.”

 

Actors Lee Seo-jin, Jung Yu-mi and Park Seo-joon, who were with Youn in “Youn’s Kitchen,” once again join her as assistants, along with a new intern, actor Choi Woo-sik, known for his role as Ki-woo in “Parasite.”

 

A six-minute highlight video released Wednesday through online platform Naver TV shows the five actors gathering at the site of the new show, as well as doing everything from cooking to cleaning.

 

“Youn’s Stay” will air Fridays at 9:10 p.m. on tvN starting Jan. 8.

Operating a guesthouse is tough, say Korean actors Lee Seo-jin, Park Seo-joon of 'Youn's Stay'

Youn’s Stay – a spin-off of the popular Korean reality TV show Youn’s Restaurant – got off to a good start with a rating of 8.2% in South Korea.

 

The show features foreign guests staying at a hanok (traditional) guesthouse in Korea run by a group of celebrities.

 

It began with the production team expressing concerns about airing a programme during the pandemic. It noted that all celebrities and guests on the show had tested negative for the coronavirus.

 

Youn’s Restaurant was a hit tvN reality show series that featured a group of Korean celebrities opening up Korean restaurants in small towns overseas.

 

While producers had to change the concept of the show due to restrictions on travelling abroad, it kept its original casting, featuring actors Youn Yuh-jung, Lee Seo-jin, Jung Yu-mi and Park Seo-joon.

 

The ratings for Youn's Restaurant, filmed in Indonesia, peaked at 14.1% and ratings for its second season, filmed in Spain, peaked at 16%, both considerably high for a cable channel programme in Korea.

 

The plan for a third season of the show last year was scrapped due to the pandemic and the team came up with a spin-off show Youn’s Stay to film in South Jeolla Province as an alternative.

 

After the first episode aired in South Korea, the hanok stay – Ssangsanje in Gurye, South Jeolla Province, where the show was shot – was flooded with inquiries about reservations.

 

“We have temporarily halted our operation due to other schedules. We will soon provide information about our reopening, ” the owner of the accommodation said on its website.

On its first episode, the actors compared their experiences in both shows.

 

Lee told Park that it is very difficult to operate a guesthouse and Park agreed, saying, “Youn’s Restaurant was easier.”

 

The cast prepared Korean food, including tteokgalbi (beef patties), jeon (pan-fried vegetables) and gungjung tteokbokki (royal stir-fried rice cake) for the guests’ first meal.

 

Along with cooking, the celebrities had to learn new tasks such as preparing the guesthouse and picking up guests, which they did not have to deal with when they ran restaurants.

 

The show however kept its concept of introducing Korean culture to foreigners by receiving only foreign guests who have been living in Korea for less than a year to the hanok guesthouse.

 

Actor Choi Woo-sik, known for his role as Ki-woo in Parasite joined the show as a newcomer and took up the role as an intern. Choi, a Korean-Canadian who is fluent in English, was in charge of communicating with foreign guests.

Meanwhile, the shows’ main cast Youn is being seen as a strong contender for this year’s Oscars for her performance in the film Minari.

[Newsmaker] Second episode of ‘Youn’s Stay’ records over 10% viewership rating

The second episode of “Youn’s Stay” -- a spinoff from reality TV show “Youn’s Restaurant” -- marked a viewership rating of 10.2 percent, according to Nielsen Korea on Saturday.

 

During the show that aired Friday night, the cast served traditional Korean drink makgeolli, as well as Korean foods they had learned to make in the previous episode, including bugak (seaweed chips), tteokgalbi (beef patties), jeon (savory pancakes) and vegan gungjung tteokbokki (royal stir-fried rice cakes) for the hanok guests’ first dinner.

 

Despite criticism that the show is little else than a rehash of director Na Young-seok’s previous hit tvN reality show series “Youn’s Restaurant,” the show’s first two episodes proved the ability to attract viewers.

 

“Youn’s Stay” is an alternative show the tvN production team came up with after it scrapped plans to film the third season of “Youn’s Restaurant,“ which featured a group of Korean celebrities opening Korean restaurants in small towns overseas.

 

The first episode of “Youn Stay” got a rating of 8.2 percent, which is considered high for a cable network program in Korea.

 

Although the show kept the same cast and theme of promoting Korean culture to foreigners, the minor changes made the show interesting to viewers.

 

New cast member and actor Choi Woo-sik, known for his role as Ki-woo in “Parasite,” was also one of the key contributors to making “Youn’s Stay” special.

 

In the second episode, guests were surprised and excited to find out that Choi, who had been guiding them to their traditional Korean accommodations in the hanok, was the one who appears in the Oscar-winning film.

 

“It would be a total dream come true to stay in this hanok with all these famous actors,” one online commenter wrote about the scene.

 

Veteran actor Youn’s cynical but caring personality also shined in Friday’s episode, which often saw guests erupting in laughter.

 

When one of the guests joked about bugak, a food they were not familiar with, and asked “You are not going to poison us?” Youn showed her humor by responding “Not tonight. Maybe, tomorrow.”

 

Meanwhile, Youn is being seen as a strong contender for this year’s Oscars. She has so far won 11 best supporting actress awards from US film critics circles and festivals, including the San Diego Film Critics Society, Music City Film Critics Association and the DiscussingFilm Critic Awards.

Busy with the preparation of a new winter menu!

I love watching this show. But I am disappointed with the new winter menu, it doesn't look visually appealing unlike the first one. 

 

And the group seemed to be even busier than before. I like it when they were already more relaxed and used to the food preparation,  that they have more spare time to smile and talk to the guests. 

 

It would also be better if they had a separate children's meal set just for kids.

i prefer the old menu too.  The dishes in the old menu captures my imagination. The new menu looks like stuff we can get anywhere or make at home.

 

For kids, pls don't add tomato into their fruit juice.  I remember hating tomato juice when i was a kid.

Youn's stay this time a little insensitive about a lot of thing. I can see very diverse group in the current shows but they a bit lack of understanding about their guests. Maybe because they running guest house plus preparing breakfast and dinner so they have very little rest.

They are operating a sort of bed and breakfast with dinner included for foreigners of all nationality who are staying in Korea for less than a year.

One of the example, Wong Sik laughing at the guest drawing (at least it shouldn't make in the final cut). The guest looks a bit embarrassed. Another thing is some guest didn't drink and they making comment drink is joy of life. I know the guest didn't drink due to the religious reason but for me PD shouldn't include that remarks. They can also do better editing.

It would be nice if they could have celebrity friends as guests for the last episode. Just a couple of friends would be nice for a change. The foreigner guests are all nice but the most memorable still remains the couple from Iran. The husband is fun to watch as he eats. 

 

It's odd that it was more entertaining watching them run a restaurant in a foreign setting than running a BB in Korea.

 

In the first season in Indonesia after they had no choice but to change location, they hardly had any customers but it was still entertaining to watch. The second season in Garachico, Spain was even better. I wonder if it was because of the beach setting. In Spain, many of the customers are memorable with their reactions while eating. Probably because it was their first time having korean dishes. 

 

Well, I guess they just have to make do with this due to current situation since traveling wasn't possible at that time. 

 

Maybe next time they could do Youn's Kitchen Season 3.

Wow... the guests are absolutely lucky! What are the odds that you get to be served by actors in a Best Picture Movie? And now a BAFTA winner too?

 

I think having CWS in the team was a brilliant move. He is quite cheeky and quite shameless about mentioning the casts previous work. He also have that lovely fumbling look, so while he can say he is a main actor of an Oscar-winning movie, people will still do a double take like are you sure?

 

I hope we get to see them do at least another season of Youn Stay. While the overseas restaurant was fun, I think watching them running an accommodation was more interesting.
