Apple has dozens of original TV shows and movies in the works for its Apple TV+ streaming service, which debuted on November 1, 2019. In this guide, we've rounded up everything that Apple is working on, including shows that have launched, and shows and projects that are still in development.

Details about TV shows and movies become clearer as these shows are cast and as episodes are filmed, so for some of these titles, we don't have a lot of information at this time. This guide is updated on a regular basis with all new original content details, and more information on each title can be found on Apple's Apple TV+ press site.

Spoiler

Dr. Brain

"Dr. Brain" is a Korean-language series based on the popular Korean webtoon of the same name. The show tells the story of a brain scientist who works to find new technologies to access memory, tools that he uses when his family is in a mysterious accident.

Dr. Brain is an emotional journey that follows a brain scientist who is obsessive about figuring out new technologies to access the consciousness and memories of the brain. His life goes sideways when his family falls victim to a mysterious accident, and he uses his skills to access memories from his wife’s brain to piece together the mystery of what actually happened to his family and why.

"Dr. Brain" will be written and directed by filmmaker Kim Jee-Woon, and it will star Lee Sun-Kyun, best known for "Parasite." The series is in production in South Korea and is expected to debut later this year.

Pachinko

Apple has secured the rights to create a TV show based on Min Jin Lee's bestselling novel "Pachinko," which chronicles the lives of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family in Japan. Apple officially ordered eight episodes of the show in March 2019.

The story begins in 1911 with the birth of Sunja, who becomes involved with a married yakuza, falling pregnant and facing ruin in her small village. The town's minister offers her a new life in Japan as his wife, where she is alone, lost, and unable to speak the language. The book then follows the Sunja's family through eight decades and four generations.

Notable names: Korean superstar Lee Min Ho will play Hansu, Jin Ha will play Solomon, Anna Sawai will play Sunja, Minha Kim will play Sunja, Soji Arai will play Mosazu, and Kaho Minami will play Etsuko.

"Let's make a second Squid Game." What is the global OTT outlet strategy for Korea, Korea, and native OTT?

spacer.png

As both Netflix and Disney Plus, the world's No. 1 and No. 2 OTT companies, enter the Korean market, domestic OTT companies are also speeding up their entry into overseas markets by strengthening content investment.

While the online video service (OTT) Netflix original series "Squid Game" was an unprecedented hit, Walt Disney Company's Disney+ also heralded a massive investment in the Korean content market. As both of the world's No. 1 and No. 2 OTT companies have entered the Korean market, domestic OTT companies are also preparing for a "counterattack" by strengthening content investment and speeding up their entry into overseas markets.

Disney+, which began its entry into the Korean market in earnest, said at a Media Day event on the 14th, "We plan to invest heavily in Korean content and all contents in the Asia-Pacific region over the next few years." Disney did not disclose the specific investment amount on this day, but it is active in entering the Korean content market by investing 66 billion won in Studio & New in April and signing a contract to receive more than one content every year for five years. The meeting also emphasized collaboration with Korean production companies several times, and seven of the 20 new contents in the Asia-Pacific region that were released were Korean contents.

On top of that, Apple TV Plus is also producing contents with domestic producers. Prior to the formalization of its entry into Korea, it started to discover Korean contents first at a time when it is discussing ways to cooperate with telecommunication companies. Directed by Kim Ji-woon and starring Lee Sun-kyun, the drama series Dr. Brain was produced and organized as the first original Korean series. Pachinko, starring actors Yoon Yeo-jung and Lee Min-ho, has already finished filming and is waiting for the release.

Min Jin Lee's "Pachinko": A Korean Woman in the Immigration Whirlwind

spacer.png

Her favorite quote:

Absorb all the knowledge you can. Fill your brain with knowledge - it's the one form of power that no one can ever take away from you.

Why this book?

-Because this book of almost 620 pages is a real nugget. An ode to family and values.

-Because the story spans eight decades and four generations. It is a pleasure to follow a whole family, with its joys and sorrows, but also how it evolves with time and the innovations which are revealed and how it adapts to them.

-Because this novel allows us to discover Korea but also Japan. I admit that these are the countries that make me dream and the author presents a culture and values dear to her heart. A real joy !

-Because this novel is about immigration. A subject still relevant and this novel sheds light on how the protagonists have to face this, how they acclimatize to a new country.

The essentials in 2 minutes

The plot.  In 1920, Sunja, a young Korean, was seduced by a foreigner and became pregnant. Finding out that this man is already married, she chooses to marry a Christian pastor and follow him to Japan. From then on, she and her family will have to face many trials over several generations.

Characters.  Sunja, of course, but also her husband, her lover and their descendants.

Places.  The plot mostly takes place between Korea and Japan, two countries that bind Sunja's family together.

The time.  The novel begins in the twentieth century and ends eighty years later.

The author.  Min Jin Lee is a Korean author and journalist. She wrote Pachinko , her second novel, when she was living in Tokyo. She now lives in New York with her family.

This book was read with a  lot of surprise and emotion. I liked following this family, their values but above all their difficulties in finding their place in society as immigrants. I closed the book with lots of stars in my eyes but with a lot of respect for immigrants.

Shelf Life: Sarah Ruhl

Welcome to Shelf Life, ELLE.com’s books column, in which authors share their most memorable reads. Whether you’re on the hunt for a book to console you, move you profoundly, or make you laugh, consider a recommendation from the writers in our series, who, like you (since you’re here), love books. Perhaps one of their favorite titles will become one of yours, too.

When theaters closed last March because of the pandemic, playwright Sarah Ruhl wrote a New York Times op-ed encouraging people to read and write poems as Shakespeare did. Just a month before, she had published her first book of poetry. Now comes her memoir, Smile (Simon & Schuster), about her struggle with Bell’s palsy she was diagnosed with after giving birth to twins in 2010.

The Chicago suburb-raised, Brooklyn-based Ruhl is a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist for The Clean House in 2005 and In the Next Room, or the vibrator play in 2010, which was also a Tony Award nominee. The MacArthur Fellow and Whiting Award winner teaches at the Yale School of Drama and is a playwright-in-residence with Signature Theatre.

...I last bought:

The last novel I bought was Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. I devoured it; I think it is a contemporary classic. I don’t know how Lee is able to sketch so deftly an entire generation in such bold quick strokes, you feel you know every character intimately, and then time passes in an instant, and the reader is on to the next generation, and then the next—meditating on the complicated tragedy of how generations are interconnected, from one country to another.

Competition to secure K contents for next "Squid Game"...Apple and Disney are also participating.

Recently, the number of contents representing Korea is increasing. As a result, global online video platforms (OTTs) are focusing on the Korean content market. While boasting as high quality as the Hollywood scale, there is a growing perception that "cost-effectiveness" is literally a good content market.

According to the OTT industry, Apple's OTT service "Apple TV Plus" is producing two contents with a domestic production company. Although Apple TV Plus has not officially entered Korea, it is analyzed that it will target the global market through this production.

Apple is preparing for the novel Pachinko and the webtoon Dr. Brain. Dr. Brain is Apple's first Korean work starring actor Lee Sun-kyun. The information on Pachinko is not known yet.

A big thank you to Syntyche and Nina for keeping this thread going

with really interesting articles.
I have seen SK telecoms mentioned a few times with regard to Apple TV.

Does anyone know who they are and what difference they could make?

I am astonished at the silence and secrecy from Apple so far considering them apparently having had a huge budget for the drama. Hopefully when they have everything in place they will go to town publicising Pachinko.

I read somewhere about a connection between Apple and Oprah Winfrey - wouldn’t it be fabulous if she gets involved in publicising It.

My big hope with LMH having gone off the radar for a while is that he has been working on his English so he can be involved in any interviews about Pachinko!

I saw an IG post, based on anna sawai's post (talk about hearsay!), that the Pachinko staff is still working on ADR (automated dialogue replacement):open_mouth:  Anyone else read something similar?  I looked at AppleTV+'s schedule and still do not see an air date for Dr. Brain, although we heard it will be in 2021.

(LEAD Apple TV+ to land in S. Korea on Nov. 4

SEOUL, Oct. 25 (Yonhap) -- Apple TV+, the subscription-based streaming service of tech titan Apple Inc., will be launched in South Korea next week, the company said Monday, heating up the competition in the local streaming market.

Apple announced on its website that it will launch Apple TV+ and its set-top box Apple TV 4K on Nov. 4 here, in partnership with local internet service provider (ISP) SK Broadband Co.

The platform will be the first among the over-the-top (OTT) media services in the country to solely offer original content to its subscribers, the company said.

Apple is set to unveil its Korean-language original series "Dr. Brain," a sci-fi thriller series based on a popular Korean webtoon of the same title.

spacer.png

Although it is not in its lineup released Monday, Apple TV+ has already embarked on a TV adaptation of the critically acclaimed novel "Pachinko," written by Korean American author Lee Min-jin. Starring Korean actors like Youn Yuh-jung and Lee Min-ho, the show is now in production, featuring Korean, Japanese and English dialogue.

The service is competitively priced in the country against rivals, with a monthly subscription fee of 6,500 won (US$5.50) compared with Netflix's lowest monthly price of 9,500 won.

Up to six people can simultaneously use an Apple TV+ account.

Apple said it will offer Korean subtitles and dubbing for its content, as well as subtitles for the hearing impaired.

Subscribers can also get recommendations for content available on other streaming services, such as homegrown players Wavve and Watcha, as well as the soon-to-be-launched Disney+, through the Apple TV app.

At the same time, streaming services in South Korea have been accused of free-riding on local internet networks without paying usage fees despite increased traffic.

Last month, SK Broadband said it filed a lawsuit against Netflix to demand network usage fees after a local court ruled against the video streaming giant earlier this year.

This is Apple TV content + surprise domestic news release !!  Apple TV Plus, what are the advantages and disadvantages?  (Free trial, monthly fee, release date, exclusive content, etc.)

FCy0XuYVcAAzqOK?format=jpg&name=medium

Hi it's me!  Istra recently published an introduction to the worldwide izves One of them, Apple TV +, announces that it will be launched in Cor!  Accordingly, I would like to present the advantages, disadvantages and monthly fees of Apple TV.  Apple TV + Apple Original

Release date? Planned Release Schedule

According to industry data announced on the 26th, Apple TV + will be released on November 4th.  This is about 8 days ahead of Disney Plus, which will be released on November 12, and SKt is believed to have been selected as an official partner.  Again, it's hard to say that I didn't know about Disney Plus.  ("For reference, Disney Plus is operated by LGU + and CT together.)

Benefits

It supports Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision by default. In addition, by using the highest bit rate, you can enjoy high quality sound and picture.  boast the highest quality of existing OTT services.

disadvantage

As you can see above, Apple TV + was launched less than two years ago and didn't even have a studio like Disney or Paramount.  Therefore, the exclusive content itself is very small compared to big OT companies like Netflix and Disney Plus.  masterpiece Morning Show, Dickinson, SEE and others.  There is exclusive content that can only be viewed on Apple TV.

masterpiece

FCwn5CgVEAcP4CC?format=jpg&name=small

Morning Show, Dickinson, SEE and others.  There are exclusive content that can only be viewed on Apple TV.  Success in Korea seems to depend on how successful Korean-style exclusive content is.  Kim Ji Young's "Doctor Brain," starring Lee Sung Kyung, is slated to be released in Korea at the same time as the release.  The production of the drama "Pachinko," which has confirmed actresses Yoon Ye Jung and Lee Min Ho, is slated to release early next year.  After that, actor Kim Ui Sung recently announced that he would be filming the new drama "We Crash" on Apple TV +.  Incidentally, Anne Hathaway and Jared Leto are due to appear in the aforementioned drama.

Free trial, fee, concurrent view

The free trial is available for 7 days.
Simultaneous viewing is possible for up to 6 people.  Price in Korea on a 4K basis is 6,500 won per month.  The US rate is $ 4.99 per month, but the actual payment amount is the same as the US rate plan as it does not include VAT.  It seems that Apple in the world has taken into account a small amount of content.

Netflix - 14,500
Disney Plus - 9900
Apple TV Plus   6,500

Will Applé TV + work on Android?

Apple TV + is Apple's OTT service launched on November 1, 2019, and it looks like Android TV is also operating overseas.  It looks like you should be able to see it on Android TV shortly after its release.  November looks like it will be an interesting month.  There is Netflix firmly on the throne, but Apple TV + at the beginning of the month and Disney + in the middle!  (It's so good for viewers) Of course, if these OTTs will be compatible with Android TV in the future, we also have to check Istra TV, but both of these OTT Android TV companies are supported overseas.  They can't help but realize the importance of Android TV clients.  Even after release, even if it doesn't appear on Android TV just prior to release, we think the Android TV app will be registered soon.

So Apple TV+ has launched in Korea and Dr. Brain will be released weekly

**************************************

Apple TV available on Android phones, too

Apple's Internet video service (OTT) "Apple TV+" began its domestic service on the 4th. As a result, the world's top three OTT services along with Netflix and Disney will compete in earnest for the domestic market.

In particular, Apple is the first paid service to provide Apple TV on Google's Android device. Some of the free features, such as the video call service "FaceTime," can be used on Android phones, but Apple TV is the first paid service to be provided outside of Apple devices.

Apple provides Apple TV through a web method that can be accessed by entering a web address rather than an app on an Android phone. Apple has no plans to release apps related to identity for Android phones.

The industry sees Apple's support for Android phones as Apple's desperate measure to secure more subscribers due to fierce competition for OTT. According to a Counterpoint Research survey, 83% of Android phones and 17% of Apple iPhones are used in Korea, an absolute high for Android phone users. Therefore, it is difficult to get ahead of OTT competition if only Apple users are targeted.

The monthly fee is 9,500 won for Netflix and 9,900 won for "Disney+" to be launched in Korea starting on the 12th, while Apple TV+ is the cheapest at 6,500 won. Netflix and Disney+ have four users who can access at the same time, while Apple TV Plus has the largest number of users with six.

In addition, Apple has launched an "Apple One" plan that combines music service Apple Music, Internet storage service iCloud, game service "Apple Arcade" and Apple TV+, and sells them at a discount of 14,900 won. The industry believes that the Apple One plan will be a powerful means to keep Apple device users such as existing iPhones from leaving.

spacer.png

In addition, Apple will sell the "Apple TV 4K" set-top box for 239,000 won separately so that TV users who do not have Internet access can watch Apple TV. Basically, Apple TV can be viewed by installing the Apple TV Plus app on smartphones, tablets, smart TVs with Internet access, and "PlayStation 5" game consoles and signing up as members. However, if it is not a smart TV, you need to connect a set-top box to enjoy it on TV. This is also Apple's strategy to catch old TV users who do not have Internet connection.

In line with domestic services, Apple produced its own drama "Doctor Brain," starring director Kim Ji-woon and actor Lee Sun-kyun, and released the first episode on the same day. Apple plans to release the second episode on the 12th and continue to increase its own videos, including the drama Pachinko starring Yoon Yeo-jung and Lee Min-ho.

Apple TV Plus Launches in Korea, Increasing Competition in Streaming Market Where Local Content Is King

Apple TV Plus launched in South Korea on Thursday with the premiere of its first original K-drama series, “Dr. Brain.” The sci-fi thriller series is based on a Korean webtoon of the same title and is directed by Kim Ji-woon (“I Saw The Devil” and “A Bittersweet Life”), one of the country’s most preeminent movie makers.

The new service will provide Korean viewers notable originals such as American award-winning comedy drama series, “Ted Lasso” and Jay Carson’s “The Morning Show” with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. American sci-fi and thriller genres flank the Apple TV Plus launch with “Foundation,” “For All Mankind” and “Servant.”

Also in the pipeline is “Pachinko,” a TV series adaptation of Lee Min Jin’s acclaimed historical novel depicting the heart-wrenching story of a Korean family’s immigration to Japan, with poverty, racism and family loyalty as its central themes. A star-studded cast includes Lee Min Ho (“The King: Eternal Monarch”) and Oscar-winning Youn Yuh-jung (“Minari”).

The Korean launch is one of the first in Asia for Apple TV. But it is priced at a deliberately affordable KRW6,500 (US$5.50) per month, reflecting the tech giant’s late entry into a streaming market that is already tight and set to get tighter. Disney Plus will launch in Korea next week.

Korea’s SVOD market is currently headed by Netflix ahead of local platforms Wavve and TVing. In a public address earlier in the day, Netflix’s Asia VP of public policy, Dean Garfield said that Korea is possibly the most competitive streaming market in the world.

“Doctor Brain” and “Pachinko” notwithstanding, Apple’s lack of local content is considered a weakness. Analysts are speculating that in order to play catch up, Apple will seek partnerships with telcos or some of the local streaming operators, such as Wavve or Watcha.

“Partnerships could be really important because Apple TV needs content. Right now it doesn’t have enough compared to Netflix and Disney Plus, so these will be a key element in Apple growing a user base in Korea,” Yves Gueron, professor of economics at Seoul National University told local media.

Jeana Gockley: New multi-generational novel is a compelling and addicting read

Have you ever gotten a book recommendation that was so good you could not wait to tell everyone else about the book? “PACHINKO” by MIN JIN LEE is that book. This epic multigenerational story draws you in and pretty soon the characters feel like your family and friends.

I love multigenerational tales — “The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane” by Lisa See and “Homegoing” by Yaa Gyasi are two of my favorites. While reading “Pachinko,” I joked with the person who recommended it to me that I could barely live my life. All I wanted to do was read the book. It was so compelling that I could not wait to see what happened next.

The novel set in Korea starts in 1910 and focuses on a family who runs a boarding house in a small village by the ocean. This couple has only one son, Hoonie, who was born with a cleft palate and twisted leg but manages to survive childhood and grow into a dependable son who makes his parents proud. Hoonie eventually takes over the boarding house with the help of his wife, Yangjin, and the couple have a daughter named Sunja.

As a naive, sheltered teenager, Sunja makes a mistake. She meets and falls in love with a much older Korean man. Unbeknownst to her, he is already married to a Japanese woman and when Sunja becomes pregnant, he offers to take care of her as his Korean mistress. Sunja refuses, and thus, starts a family-centered tale that readers will be unable to put down.

After Sunja’s rejection of Hansu, an unusual and timely solution is provided for her situation, and soon she is on her way to Japan to start a new life. Over the course of the next several years she deals with many struggles. She and her children and grandchildren endure harsh discrimination, financial troubles and have their lives affected by world events. Despite the hardships, Sunja’s life has love and friendship, and raising her children brings her much joy.

I am not sure how I missed this captivating book when it was first released four years ago, but if you have not read, it I highly recommend it. Lee has created a beautiful, enthralling tale of family. The characters are well written, flaws and all, and the setting and use of world events creates a strong, thought-provoking novel.

saw an IG post, based on anna sawai's post (talk about hearsay!), that the Pachinko staff is still working on ADR (automated dialogue replacement)

Is that a form of dubbing?  Ugh!
