syntyche
‘Pachinko’ Showrunner Soo Hugh Signs Overall Deal With UCP “Pachinko” showrunner Soo Hugh has signed a multiyear overall deal with UCP, the studio announced Friday. In addition to developing, writing and producing new projects for the studio, Hugh will also launch an incubator program to help Asian writers create shows and establish careers in the television industry. The program is similar to the one being developed by “Vida” creator Tanya Saracho, who signed her own overall deal with the studio last year. Hugh is currently overseeing Apple TV+’s global adaptation of Min Jin Lee’s multi-generational family drama “Pachinko,” which is being filmed in Korea, Japan and the U.S. “From ‘The Terror’ to ‘Pachinko,’ Soo has captured epic stories with intimate, complex characters,” UCP president Beatrice Springborn said in a statement. “She’s the rare talent who has the ability to write across time and place, while always making a show feel modern and unexpected. We are thrilled to partner with her to bring that vision and versatility to UCP. “ https://www.thewrap.com/pachinko-showrunner-soo-hugh-signs-overall-deal-with-ucp/

nina_mitrokhina
27.02.2021 Korean War Drama The birth and throne of streaming services has led to the transformation of the Korean film market, with content and product quality constantly being updated to enhance competitiveness. Never before has the Korean drama market broken the old order of fierce competition between streaming platforms and TV channels. The era of online broadcasting took the throne, not only cable TV channels, one after the other service channels such as OCN, JTBC, tvN came out ... directly competing with the traditional channels KBS, SBS, MBC ... direct influence on the investment process, production and the distribution of the Korean drama Kim Chi. Competition for market share is fierce ... In addition to Netflix, a number of other channels have also entered the online market or started collaborations. Watcha, Waave, OCN, JTBC, tvN or KBS, SBS, MBC didn't miss this opportunity. In addition to local platform channels, Korea is currently developing more international service channels: Disney +, Coupang Play, Apple +, HBO Max or Kakao M, Naver's Vline, or service investors like KT have also joined. The variety of service channels has led to fierce competition for market share. These channels are forced to have new exclusive content to increase user engagement ... Apple + is also investing in a multilingual version of Pachinko about the life of a Korean immigrant and an adaptation of Mr. Robin "from the online comic" Dr. Brain "... Online competition will provide users with more choice, the content of films will also become diversified, and the work will also be improved more and more due to large investment costs. Korean television needs international markets, demanding more cooperation from external partners. However, this puts pressure on the internal streaming platforms themselves. It's a long war and the market is always unstable. Soo Hugh, the showrunner of Apple's forthcoming series Pachinko, is setting up shop at UCP. Hugh, who was co-showrunner of the first season of The Terror at AMC, has signed a multi-year overall deal at the Universal Studio Group unit to develop, write and produce projects. She'll also launch an incubator program — similar to one that Vida creator Tanya Saracho is overseeing at UCP — to help new Asian writers create shows and establish careers in the TV business. "From The Terror to Pachinko, Soo has captured epic stories with intimate, complex characters. She's the rare talent who has the ability to write across time and place, while always making a show feel modern and unexpected," said UCP president Beatrice Springborn. "We are thrilled to partner with her to bring that vision and versatility to UCP." Said Hugh, "I'm over the moon to be joining Beatrice and the UCP family. They are that rare breed of excellence and class, and their track record in creating bold, quality programming in recent years is unparalleled. I'm also thrilled to be piloting the incubator program with them. We have enormous ambitions for this and I hope to offer deserving voices the same opportunities I have been given over the years. It is a privilege." Hugh is currently showrunner and executive producer of Pachinko, an adaptation of Min Jin Lee's best-selling novel about several generations of a Korean immigrant family. Her credits also include Apple's See, ABC's The Whispers and CBS' Under the Dome. She is repped by WME and Jeffrey Frankel at Mckuin Frankel. In addition to Hugh and Saracho, UCP also has overall deals with Sam Esmail, Seth MacFarlane and Sera Gamble (You). https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/pachinko-showrunner-soo-hugh-overall-deal-ucp
