"Pachinko," produced by Apple TV in the U.S., is drawing keen attention again

Interest in the novel "Pachinko," which is produced by Apple TV dramas in the U.S., is increasing. Sales are also increasing, and it is also listed in the best-selling charts of each bookstore.

It is drawing attention as news of drama production and casting news of actors such as Yoon Yeo-jung, Lee Min-ho, Jung Eun-chae and Jung Woong-in continued late last month.

"Pachinko" is a novel by Korean-American writer Lee Min-jin. It consists of two volumes. It was first published in March 2018.

spacer.png

The book tells the story of four generations of Korean-Japanese from the Japanese colonial era in 1930s to the 1980s. It tells the story of the hardships faced by ethnic Koreans who crossed from Yeongdo to Osaka in Busan. At the end, the story is about moving from Japan to the U.S.

Pachinko, the title and main subject of the novel, is also used as a metaphorical expression that reflects the lives of Koreans in Japan. It depicts the struggles and sorrows in their lives, meaning "unfated gambling."

The author was born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1968 and settled in New York as a family immigrant. Her father is from Wonsan, Hamgyeongnam-do, and his mother is from Busan. At the age of seven, she is an immigrant who lives as an American, but she sticks to her Korean name.

The novel received "The New York Times' Top 10 Best Books in 2017," "USA Today," and "The BBC 2017 Book of the Year." "The second Jane Austen" is also coined to the author.

In 2019, former U.S. President Barack Obama introduced it on social media as a book he enjoyed reading. "It's a novel that catches the eye from the beginning," he said.

Kim Hyun-hee, editor of the publisher's Literature History, said about the work, "It seems that the writer's hardships as an immigrant are reflected a lot. In addition, if you look at the female-centered narrative, which revolves around three women, Yang-jin, Yang-jin's daughter Sun-ja, and Kyung-hee, who Sun-ja finds out when she gets married, you will be able to make a new impression."

The magnitude of interest in the work can be seen in bookstores' sales volume.

In Kyobo Bookstore, the first volume entered the fourth week of the overall chart in January at 31st, and this week in February, it rose 18 steps to 13th overall. It ranks third in the novel category and first in the foreign novel category.

In the fourth week of January, the first and second volumes ranked fourth and sixth overall, respectively, and this week ranked fourth and fifth. At Yes24, it ranked 12th and 14th last week, and this week ranked seventh and 10th, respectively.

The publisher's record of publishing books continues this trend.

"Last year, 300 to 400 copies were sold a month, including the first and second volumes, but 8,000 copies were sold last month after the news of the drama's production," the Literature History said in a telephone interview with Newsis. After looking at sales trends, additional printing is also planned to prevent inventory from falling.

The story of four generations of an immigrant Korean family.

Apple TV+’s international production Pachinko is about to start filming in Vancouver.

Pachinko was shooting in Busan, Korea, and Japan last Fall.
Working title: Eleos.

Vancouver filming dates: February 6th – April 9th, 2021.

In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja (Minha Kim), the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant–and that her lover is married–she refuses to be bought. Instead, she accepts an offer of marriage from a gentle, sickly minister passing through on his way to Japan. But her decision to abandon her home, and to reject her son’s powerful father, sets off a dramatic saga that will echo down through the generations.

Richly told and profoundly moving, Pachinko is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty. From bustling street markets to the halls of Japan’s finest universities to the pachinko parlors of the criminal underworld, Lee’s complex and passionate characters–strong, stubborn women, devoted sisters and sons, fathers shaken by moral crisis–survive and thrive against the indifferent arc of history.

Pachinko will stream in Korean, Japanese and English.
Cast:  Min Ho Lee, Jin Ha, Anna Sawai, Minha Kim, Soji Arai, Kaho Minam.

Characters:

Min Ho Lee is Hansu, an enigmatic outsider and merchant with ties to organized crime who embarks on an illicit romance with far-reaching consequences.

[Weekly Hot Book] ② Focused again on Pachinko, a US drama production.

Eunbi Kim
2021.02.07

According to the Kyobo Bookstore Bestseller Rankings on February 1, Korean-Korean writer Lee Min Jin "Pachinko" was ranked 13th overall. This is 18 positions more than last week. Late last month, "Pachinko" was followed by news of the drama production and casting news for actors such as Yoon Yeo Jung, Lee Min Ho, Jung Eun Che and Jung Woon In. An official from Kyobo Book Center said, "Korean readers are more interested in news of famous Korean actors appearing."

Pachinko, published in March 2018, consists of one and two volumes. The book focuses on the history of four generations of Koreans who lived in Japan from the 1930s to the 1980s during the Japanese colonial period. It tells about the hardships that Koreans have gone through when they moved from Yeongdo, Busan, to Osaka, and how they survived there. After all, it even contains the story of the transition from Japan to the United States.

The author, also 1.5 years of Korean descent, was born in Seoul, Korea in 1968 and settled in New York as a family immigration as a child. My father is from Wonsan, Hamgyongnam-do, and my mother is from Busan. At the age of seven, Lee Ming lives as an American but sticks to his Korean name. Featured in the New York Times Top 10 Books of 2017, USA Today and the 2017 BBC Book of the Year. There was also a modifier for the writer - "the second Jane Austen".

As a result of the analysis of the ratio of book sales by gender and age, women accounted for more than half - 53.9%. By age, the share of persons over the age of 40 accounted for a high share - 31.6%, and for persons aged 50 - 31.2%. They were 60 years old and older (17.2%), 30 years old (13.2%), 20 years old (6.4%) and adolescents (0.4%).

The imbd of Pachinko has been updated with the inclusion of an intimacy coordinator, which is exactly that, a person in charge of the coordination of the sex/more intimate scenes. I think it was to be expected according to the original material.

Here is her profile: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm10658916/

Here's more information on this topic:

Another talent joins Pachinko.

Amanda Blumenthal - She is the premier intimacy coordinator in Los Angeles and the founder of Intimacy Professionals Association (IPA). She is a Los Angeles native and comes from a family of filmmakers. Prior to her career as an intimacy coordinator, she worked as a sex and relationship coach with private clients. Amanda has been actively involved with advocacy work related to sexuality since college, serving in leadership positions in groups such as Advocates for Survivors of Sexual Assault and Sex Positive Los Angeles. As a member of these groups she has led workshops on LGBTQIA+ issues, consent, kink, and many other topics.

Hello, global viewers.

Overseas expansion through OTT centered on Netflix
I've heard from actors about the significance of global expansion.

Actor Lee Min-ho has been cast as the main character in the drama series "Pachinko," produced by Apple TV+. It is a drama about four generations of Korean immigrant families. Lee Min-ho auditioned for the role - his first time after a while as he is a leading actor who continues to receive love calls. It was a challenge for a new platform, a new working environment, and a global expansion for which he had to audition for the first time in more than a decade.

I asked the actors what this trend meant to the actors and what they thought about entering the global market.

"OTT is amazing. It seems that Korean content is especially drawing attention these days, so it's amazing and I want to accept the challenge," said Jung Woong-in, who appeared in " Pachinko" with Lee Min-ho. "I'm curious to have new experiences in other production environments and act there, and I wanted to try it.". "I am excited to go to Canada and think about my work from a set to a new system," he said, expressing curiosity about the work process that is different from what he has been doing so far.

SURREY NOW & THEN: ‘Pachinko’ filming now the focus of former newspaper press building

spacer.png

PICTURED: Surrey Studio City on a recent Wednesday afternoon, at 12091 88th Ave. (Photo: Tom Zillich)

Into a big Surrey building that once printed newspapers, film crews have brought lights, cameras and action not meant for the general public to see, or even know about.

A veil of secrecy tends to surround Surrey Studio City, the new name of the former Pacific Press plant located on 88th Avenue in Kennedy Heights, east of Scott Road.

These days, the place buzzes with filming of Pachinko, described as “a chronicle of four generations of a Korean immigrant family” on imdb.com, in an Apple TV+ series based on the 2017 novel by Korean-American author Min Jin Lee.

The series has caused the parking lot of Surrey’s largest film studio to be full of trucks, trailers and tents, and in one area a backlot is being built for outdoor scenes, much like the one created at Cloverdale Fairgrounds for Superman and Lois shoots.

“It’s quite significant in size, and it’s good for Surrey,” James Monk, the city’s filming manager, said of the 200,000-square-foot studio.

“Productions can film there and also use the space for set construction, and they can set up their production offices there too,” Monk added. “So it’s almost a one-stop-shop for film productions, whereas some productions can’t house everything under one roof like that, they have to spread out a bit more, in other parts of town. That building seems to accommodate what productions are looking for.”

As for Pachinko, a story posted on deadline.com sheds light on the “epic international drama series,” written and executive-produced Soo Hugh and starring Min Ho Lee, among others.

“Epic in scope, intimate in tone,” the series bio says, “the story begins with a forbidden love and crescendos into a sweeping saga that journeys between Korea, Japan and America to tell the unforgettable story of war and peace, love and loss, triumph and reckoning. The series will be told in three languages: Korean, Japanese and English.”

Generational Legacy: Identity In The Context of Family Histories

Available to all · Event · organized by Gold House and 2 more

Wednesday, Feb 10, 2021 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM PST

More about the event

Join the Gold House Book Club for an intimate discussion about identity, belonging, and generational legacy featuring February’s featured author Min Jin Lee and her book Pachinko, moderated by Kimmy Yam of NBC Asian America. Like most indelible novels, Pachinko resists a succinct synopsis, but at the core of this intergenerational tale is the concept of family and the devotion, sacrifice, and grit that one must employ for not only the benefit of immediate family members but also for subsequent generations.

We’ll explore how the themes in the book are also relevant to API today especially within the context of our current social and political landscape. In 2020, the disproportionate effects of Covid-19 plagued many Asian American communities and perpetuated our eternal foreigner status despite calling the US our home. Now, in 2021, as we enter the Year of the Ox, how will the API community bounce back and in what ways will we be chasing success for not only ourselves but to secure a legacy for future generations.

Tune in on Wednesday, February 10th at 3pm PDT / 6pm EDT at Facebook.com/GoldHouseCo. RSVP now and invite your friends.

Presented in partnership with CAPE, Korea Society, AAPI Women Lead, and Walmart.

Korea's 'Famous' Content in OTT

·The domestic and foreign media industries are likely to increase their status due to accelerated competition in supply and demand.

According to the Korea Communications Commission's "2020 Survey on the Usage Behavior of Broadcasting Media," the OTT utilization rate rose sharply. Its utilization rate of OTT was 66.3 percent in 2020, up 14.3 percentage points from last year-on-year.

Content markets have been hot since late last year. More global OTTs are preparing to enter the Korean market, and domestic OTTs are also keen to secure quality content to expand their businesses. Korean contents are now showing their presence in the Middle East, the U.S., and Europe beyond Asia. Global OTTs, which inevitably need to increase the number of global subscribers, are actively investing in Korean content production.

The industry is seeing moves to secure Korean content for Disney Plus, which announced its entry into Korea this year, and Apple TV Plus, which is expected to launch official services in the near future. Recently, it has been confirmed that several original works of Apple TV+ have been reviewed by the Korea Video Rating Board. Videos, movies, etc. shall be reviewed by the Video Rating Board before distribution in Korea. Initially, the industry expected Apple TV+ to enter South Korea by next year, but considering its move, it is likely to be advanced. Apple TV+ added 'Korean subtitles' to its original contents at the end of August last year. Korean actors and directors are also stepping up efforts to produce works that participate in production. "Pachinko" (8 episodes), which Lee Min-ho and Yoon Yo-jung are scheduled to appear.

Anyone interested in participating in the thread spotlight for Pachinko, please PM me especially those who have read the book.   I'll create a PM group to discuss

:fullofhearts:thanks much @CarolynH

chingus -- the spotlight would be like a mini book review; the idea is to help soompi chingus who:

a. may like reading but don't have the time or energy to read the book at this time

b. not book readers in general; not sure if they can get through 490 pages

c. not sure whether their English level is good enough to read a prize-winning book and finding it a bit intimidating

so the mini book reviews will be like google movie review style -- you know a few sentences; just enough to give a person an idea of the movie. it does not require lots of analysis or dissection (you can have the fun of doing that once the drama airs :D).  so if you have read the book and would like to help other chingus who haven't, please get in touch with @CarolynH for more details about the spotlight.

kamsamhida! :)
