Lee Min Ho is scheduled to make his return to the small screens just months after the successful run of his comeback series titled The King: Eternal Monarch. The former boyfriend of Suzy Bae is leading the upcoming international drama series called Pachinko.

It was, previously, revealed that Lee Min Ho has started the production on multiple continents. Pachinko, which is based on the novel of the same name written by Min Jin Lee, will, also, star Minha Kim from Call, After Spring; Anna Sawai from Fast & Furious and Ninja Assassin; Jin Ha from Devs, Love Life; and Jung Eun Chae, who also starred in The King: Eternal Monarch.

Pachinko will have a total of eight episodes - four of which will be directed by Kogonada while the rest will be guided by Gook and Ms. Purple director Justin Chon. Song Hugh is the executive producer and showrunner. It will, also, be translater into Japanese, Korean and English.

Jung Eun Chae will reunite with Lee Min Ho to portray Kyung Hee. Reports have it that the South Korean actress' exotic beauty and fluency in the English language are, totally, an advantage for her. The operations manager of Lee Min Ho's fans club called "Minoz" revealed that even letters, flowers, or any gift are banned due to stringent safety precautions. The management, also, implemented these proscriptions for the safe and smooth filming of the artists and production staff.

Analyzing the role of Lee Min Ho for “Pachinko”

 

I bought the novel by Lee Min-jin, "Pachinko," because I wanted to know what role Lee Min Ho
would play. So, I want to share some information about his role, as well as what I conclude we
will see on our screens.

 

First of all, I will say a few words about this. It is a big-budget American TV series of Apple TV+.
Pachinko is based on Lee Min Jin's 2017 best selling novel of the same name and says about the
hopes and dreams of four generations of a Korean immigrant family. The characters become
subjected to issues of racism and stereotypes, among other events. The series is written and
produced by Soo Hugh (The Terror, Under the Dome), and Michael Ellenberg's Media Res is
adapting the big-budget show for Apple. The TV series is going to shoot in both Korea and USA,
and the story will be told in Korean, Japanese, and English. Pachinko was a National Book Award
Finalist and planned as an eight-episode limited series, as Apple ordered the entire series will
be filmed at once.

Lee Min Ho has so far played the student (Boys Over Flowers, The Mackerel Run, The Heirs, Get Up,
Secret Campus), the waiter (Love Hymn), the "gay" architect (Personal Taste), the conman (Legend
of the Blue Sea), the martial-arts expert (Bounty Hunters), the general (Faith), the avenger
(City Hunter), the king (The King: Eternal Monarch) and the poor entangled in the underworld
(Gangnam Blues).

In most of his roles, he was rich, as was in "Pachinko." The difference in this role is that he will play for the first time the father and the married man who has an illegal love affair. He will be a very handsome man, fair, well-dressed, and a merchant with trade between Korea and Japan and later with America. He hates laziness and being uneducated, and this can make him violent at times since he thinks that all this keeps you stagnant.

 

He married the daughter of the leader of the yakuza and has three daughters with her. Through this marriage involved with organized crime and falls in love with his compatriot Sunja, who is not beautiful, but attracted by her powerful spirit, the sharpness of her mind, and her hard-working nature. She is the only woman he loved, but he can not be with her and goes with prostitutes.

 

He thinks of her till the end and Sunja, too. He does not believe in religion and political parties, but he believes in education and that it will help you move forward in your life with honesty and pride. He is fair and good with Korean and willing to help them, but people must be careful not to provoke his anger. He takes care of his children and women, even from a distance, and respects their decisions. He does not consider the woman as a soulless object that the man decides for her. He lets her make her choice despite his disagreement or agreement, watches from a distance, and helps without offending the other person. His role is not very big since the story focuses on Sunja, but it does not go unnoticed.

As soon as I finished reading the book, I dare say that I liked the first half more, while the second
half of the book that the children grow up spoiled me a bit. In American projects, focus on the
sexual part and the prostitution that is more present in the second half of the book, didn’t impress
me. It is something that makes me hesitant since I do not like American series that have a shallow
script, focus on sex and violence.
I also noticed that Ko Hansu in the entire story looks the same with a few wrinkles and gray hair.
So, I conclude that we will see him with professional make-up to look old. I will like this. In the
book, the role of Ko Hansu often disappeared and re-appeared later, but in the series of 8 episodes,
I guess we will not be able to realize his absence since the events will have to run faster than the
book.
Korean actress Jung Eun Chae will also star for Pachinko and has a bigger role than Ko Hansu
–at least for the book. Her addition made me feel sure about my opinion for “The King: Eternal
Monarch” that it was a huge success abroad through Netflix. It is not a coincidence that the two
stars of the American TV-series played in The King: Eternal Monarch and the rest cast are from
American series and movies.
Isn’t it a success for the King? These are the actors who confirmed in the cast.

In ‘Pachinko’, a Record of Forgotten Lives

Even in the most extraordinary of political times, someone must tend to the crops. Someone must weave clothes for the winter. These everyday tasks fall not to the revolutionaries who earn our tributes but to ordinary folk persevering through wars and famines without recognition. History, says Min Jin Lee in the opening line of Pachinko, has failed them. 

 

In a sprawling family saga spanning four generations from rural 1910s Korea during Japanese occupation to bullish Japan of the 1980s, Lee offers a corrective. The 20th century's most notable events are footnotes in Pachinko (Grand Central Publishing, 2017). The spotlight is on the people that history has forgotten.

 

The novel centers on Sunja, the hardworking and illiterate daughter of a Korean boarding-house owner. Just as the Japanese are tightening their grip on the Korean peninsula, two men arrive to disrupt her meagre existence. With yakuza-connections, Hansu brings starry-eyed glamour into Sunja's privations, leaving when she reveals she is with child.

 

Isak, a kindly pastor, then transports Sunja from the backwaters to Osaka as his wife, saving her from dishonour and making her the Baek family matriarch. In Japan, Isak's idealism and naiveté burrow the family deeper in poverty as they weather the major upheavals of the 20th century, including the atomic bombings of Japan, where at least 40,000 Koreans died.

 

Pachinko's ensemble of immigrant characters brings to light the plight of ethnic Koreans in Japan who migrated or were forcefully brought over between 1910 and 1950. Their descendants, known as the zainichi, continue to face discrimination and social isolation. "This place is only fit for pigs and Koreans," says Isak's older brother, Yoseb, when the couple arrives at the Osaka ghetto they will call home. For a Korean man, the choice is always RickRoll'D, Yoseb thinks to himself in another moment of reckoning.

 

The immigrant's ache for dignity and belonging are captured in the family's second generation, Sunja's sons Noa and Mozasu. Each takes a different route through education, wealth, and denial of Korean heritage, only to find the deck stacked impossibly high. By the novel's end, the family has been in Japan for three generations. They are yet to be recognised as Japanese. Change, the novel concedes, takes time.

 

Written in the tradition of the 19th century novel, Pachinko is a triumph of interiority. Lee is deft with characterisation and elegant in introducing and exiting characters seemingly at will. Her roving omniscient narrator flits between men and women, the rich and the deprived, Japanese and Korean, making every scene intimate and revealing.

 

The book is not without its clichés. Hansu is somewhat of a contrivance, too, carrying the two halves of the story on his back. But Lee knows how to sharpen the edges of her narrative with an observation, context, or commanding interiority, making familiar moments meaningful. Her careful pacing helps tremendously, slowing down and picking up speed as needed.

 

This is Lee's second novel, published a decade after her first. In this time she lived in Japan, interviewing Korean-Japanese people there, and wrote multiple drafts for what became Pachinko. Her in-depth research shines through here, giving us an intimate view of the cultural dissonance of contemporary Japan.

 

For a Bangladeshi reader, Pachinko's key themes of belonging, racism, cultural erasure, and resilience against the odds resonate deeply. We have had our own tormented history with refugees in this country. With a million more joining in recent years, Pachinko offers a sobering glimpse into what the future might hold.
