Excerpt from a Japanese article:

Latest "Korean Entertainment Information".

One corner "TOKYO SAVVY" of "ALL GOOD FRIDAYS" broadcast on J-WAVE. On the air on Friday November 6th, Korean entertainment specialist Minshiru gave an update on Korea ...

[Drama] The production of the great bestselling novel continues.

Minshiru: I think there are still a lot of people who are into Korean dramas on Netflix, but this time from Apple TV + (Apple's video-on-demand service), the original drama will also appear. The name "Pachinko" is based on a Korean novel. In Japan, the Japanese version was published from the spring and fall of Bungei until the summer of 2020, and in the United States it is a big bestseller with over 1 million copies. The main character is Lee Min Ho from the Korean version of Boys Over Flowers. In addition, Anna Sawai and Kaho Minami from Japan will also perform. It seems to be a global project bringing together actors and production groups from Japan, Korea and the USA.

[Entertainment] What is the current status of Korean stars?

Minshiru: ... "Lee Min Ho opens YouTube channel."

Web trends over broadcasting...Fewer TV dramas and more OTT dramas

The structure of the media has begun to move from TV to Over the Top (Online Video Service).

As the media environment itself has changed, the number of viewers watching dramas on the air has decreased significantly, and the term "TV drama crisis" can also be found in recent films, as they taste the humiliation of the highest viewer ratings of 3 percent and in severe cases 1 percent ratings (Nielsen Korea, national standards).

Broadcasters have already started to reduce the number of dramas aired on TV, and OTT dramas are undergoing changes such as increasing the number of dramas aired on TV.

In the case of the three terrestrial broadcasters, it is inevitable to adjust the number of production and broadcasting stations next year. The biggest reason is the pressure on the drama industry and production costs. Just as it is said that they incur more than 100 million won in losses every time they air a drama, not only can we expect any more economic effects, but broadcasters are also falling into a pit of losses.

In terms of ratings, we can't expect the same "big hit" as before. In the case of dramas that have been aired or are being aired recently, most of them remain in the 3% range, except for 14.5% (Nielsen Korea, national standards), recorded by SBS' "Penthouse" (played by Kim Soon-ok, directed by Joo Dong-min). JTBC, which wrote a 28.4% (Nielsen Korea, nationwide standard for paid households) record for "The World of the Married" earlier this year, has a different atmosphere in the first half and the second half. Currently, only 1% of dramas are in the drama category, which has led to concerns among officials.

Therefore, advertising revenue cannot be expected. There are no dramas that have been sold out recently. KBS and MBC are expected to earn more than 10 percent less advertising money than last year.

On the other hand, due to the introduction of the 52-hour workweek, the production period of the drama has increased, resulting in an increase in the amount of money spent, namely production costs. Although it had maintained production cost of 400 million to 500 million won in the past, it has increased from 700 million won to 1.2 billion won in recent years. After producing the entire 16-episode drama, it costs about 15 billion won. Therefore, broadcasting companies are focusing on entertainment programs that produce similar effects at a small cost. The drama is gradually disappearing from the schedule.

The way out is the OTT platform. They often receive investment in production costs. KBS2's "Zombie Detective," which has already ended, was jointly invested by KBS, platform Wavve, and IPTV's SK Broadband, while MBC's "Kkondae Intern" and SBS's "Alice" also received investment from Wavve. Dependence on Netflix is increasing. Shows are already aimed at playing Netflix, and there are many works that decide on partnerships even before airing.

Things have gotten better for Netflix and Kakao TV. Interest in the Web has also increased since the Covid-19 era. Netflix has introduced a total of five films this year, including "Itaewon Class" and "The School Nurse Files," and will increase the number to nine next year. Kakao TV will also provide new dramas one by one through collaboration with Wavve. If shortform dramas were released this year, about 15 films will be produced starting next year, including "City Couples Way of Love."

On top of that, Apple TV+' entry into South Korea is also becoming visible. Apple TV+ will make its debut in the Korean market by introducing "Pachinko," starring Lee Min-ho.

Yoon Yeo-jung, the main character of Apple TV+ 'Pachinko'

Starts Filming in Steel Secured Security

Actor Yoon Yeo-jung will be the main character of the drama "Pachinko" by Apple TV+, a global video streaming service.

"Yoon Yeo-jung has become the main character of the Apple TV+ drama 'Pachinko' in the U.S.," an entertainment industry source told Sports Chosun. "Pachinko" is based on a best-selling novel of the same name written by Korean-American author Lee Min-jin. It is a global project produced by global cast members from Korea, Japan, and the United States in three languages: Korean, Japanese, and English. Previously, Lee Min-ho's work on the casting board made headlines.

"Pachinko" is a novel that captures the miserable lives of Zainichi (Korean residents in Japan), who were both Koreans but were eventually strangers, and was nominated for the 2019 National Book Award and selected by many media as the "Book of the Year." It is a novel written by Korean-American author Lee Min-jin, who lived in Tokyo for four years from 2007 and covered Korean residents in Japan, and is considered one of the best works of the times.

Apple TV+' drama series, "Pachinko," features a total of eight episodes of individual stories penetrated by history on a vast scale and in depth through four generations of Korean immigrant family epic stories. Korean, Japanese, and American actors have been cast, and all-location shooting in Korea began on the 26th of last month.

Yoon Yeo-jung, who is already an "actress to trust and watch" in the Korean film and drama scene, is already famous overseas for her passionate performances regardless of genre. As she has already appeared in the Netflix series "Sense 8 Season 1," attention is focusing on what synergy Yoon Yeo-jung, who is familiar with the global market, will show with "Pachinko." Yoon Yeo-jung began filming today (13th) amid tight security.

"Pachinko" will be produced by the production company Media Reds, and Soo Hugh, author of "The Terror" and "The Killing," will participate as the main writer and general production and show runner. In particular, it has been confirmed that Korean-American directors Kogonada and former director Justin, who are famous for their sensuous production, will take charge of four parts each.

So she will play old Sanju??

omg   I never had her on my list of FL for Min Ho :grimace:

That thought crossed my mind, too. According to the article, she's playing the main character, so she might play old Sunja. And the take of the drama is a flashback type with Sunja interacting with her grandchildren, hence the casting announcement of the 4th generation.

omg

i think we discussed this before that Sanju will be more of the narrator in this drama, I even remember @leeminhosny mentioned titanic

Wow, I like this idea! Good! Flash back type is good!! It kinda gives you  chills, imagine Han Su is young and Sanju the narrator is old

the contrast of Han Su playing as a young man and Sanju narrating the story as an old woman is so good.

Yoon Yeo-jung-Lee Min-ho Appears in Apple TV Plus Drama 'Pachinko'

The four generations of Korean immigrant family chronicles.

Actors Yoon Yeo-jung and Lee Min-ho will appear in the global video service (OTT) Apple TV+ drama "Pachinko."

Following Lee Min-ho's earlier announcement of the casting, Yoon Yeo-jung's agency Hook Entertainment also said on the 13th that "Yoon Yeo-jung started filming 'Pachinko' today."

"Pachinko" features an eight-part story of a four-generation Korean immigrant family with a historical background. Starting with taboo love, it goes back and forth between Korea and Japan and the United States, drawing a chronicle of war and peace, love and separation, victory and referee.

Yoon's role is not yet known, and Lee plays Hansu, a merchant who has ties to Yakuza. In addition, Korean actors Ha Jin, Kim Min Ha, and Japanese actors Anna Sawai, So Ji Arai and Kaho Minami will also appear.

The production company is Media Res, and Su Hugh, the writer of 'The Terror' and ' The Killing', will participate as the main author and general production and show runner. It is directed by Korean-American directors Kogonada and Justin. It started shooting in Korea on the 26th of last month and also has plans on shooting in Canada. It will be presented in three languages, Korean, English, and Japanese. The release date is undecided.

That makes sense @syntyche.  Otherwise, if she was to portray old Sanju in real time, they would be at the end of the novel.  The only other older person (I'm only halfway through the book) would be Sanju's mother.

*********

She was in Dear My Friends?  OMG, one of my top 10 kdramas.  I loved it.

lol, that made me laugh @Nikaa94:lol:  At least we are prepared knowing we may not see him as much as we'd like, unlike LMH's last drama which was a total shock, at least to me, that he was not a prominent character until the end.
