The upcoming historical drama “River Where the Moon Rises” (literal title) has finalized its main cast lineup!

“River Where the Moon Rises” retells the love story between Pyeonggang and On Dal, who are characters in a classic Goguryeo folktale. Pyeonggang, also known as Yeom Ga Jin, is an ambitious woman who dreams of becoming the first female to lead Goguryeo, and she uses On Dal’s feelings for her to achieve her goals.

As confirmed previouslyKim So Hyun will play Pyeonggang, who is born a princess and raised a soldier. She is clever and level-headed. Ji Soo has been cast in the role of On Dal, a peace-loving, pure man who goes against his principles in order to protect Pyeonggang. Kang Ha Neul will play On Dal’s father On Hyup, the chief of the Sunnobu tribe and a general for Goguryeo.

Lee Ji Hoon will play the elite general Go Geon, who is perfect in every way. For the first time in his life, he longs to make Pyeonggang his and dives into an intense fight for her heart.

Choi Yoo Hwa will be Hae Mo Yong, who is determined to control Goguryeo and play with it as she wants. She is a woman with a beautiful face, a meticulous personality, a special power to foresee the future, and a big secret of her own. Hae Mo Yong falls in love with Go Geon and adds to the excitement of the drama.

A source from the drama shared, “We have completed the cast lineup that is 100 percent in sync with the characters in the script. We focused on strong acting skills and the chemistry between the characters during the casting process. Please look forward to seeing how these actors will portray the love story between Pyeonggang and On Dal in the Goguryeo tale and what kind of message and emotion they will extend to modern-day society through the drama.”

“River Where the Moon Rises” is written by Han Ji Hoon, who previously wrote dramas such as “Woman of 9.9 Billion” and “Tempation,” and directed by Yoon Sang Ho of “Saimdang, Light’s Diary” and “King Maker: The Change of Destiny.” It is slated to air in the first half of 2021.

SOME OF THE BIGGEST HALLYU NAMES OF THIS GENERATION ARE COMING TOGETHER TO WEAVE AN UNFORGETTABLE PERIOD DRAMA.

The upcoming historical series, 달이 뜨는 강  The Moon Rising River (literal translation), is already stirring anticipation as the star-studded line up of casts was revealed.

 

The Page Turner romantic pair of  Ji Soo, and Kim So Hyun reunites as the lead characters for this series. Kang Ha Neul, Lee Ji Hoon, and Choi Yu Hwa will also render their exceptional artistic performances as supporting characters.

 

 

With the actors’ impressive acting skills and stellar presence, the drama is already drawing excitement and curiosity from prospective viewers.

The Moon Rising River is a love story adaptation of the famous Goguryeo folktale characters, Pyeonggang and Ondal. The narrative will revolve around the tragic fate of Ondal who once dreamed of becoming a Taewang (the greatest king). However, his life ended by sacrificing his heart for peace.

The production team shared that the epic story of the beloved folktale lovers will be told in a whole different light.

 

ROUGH CHARACTER SKETCH

PRINCESS PYEONGGANG (KIM SO HYUN)

 

Kim So Hyun, will portray the role of Pyeonggang. She was born as a Goguryeo princess and lived her life as majestic royalty in Salsu. Trying to save Goguryeo Kingdom from an impending collapse, Kim So Hyun will depict an intelligent and graceful female leader.

Historical series have been a quintessential part of the young actress’ blossoming career after landing on lead roles for period dramas such as Tale Of Nokdu and The Emperor: Owner Of The Mask.

 

ONDAL (JI SOO)

After so much anticipation, Ji Soo recently confirmed his participation in the series as he takes the role of Ondal. Known in the Korean folktale as “Ondal The Fool”, he is the story’s main protagonist.

His character will depict his rise in social status from being a commoner to a well-respected figurehead in Sunnobu, Goguryeo Kingdom. With natural leadership skills and strong inclination to non-violent means, he will become a beloved leader in the entire Goguryeo Kingdom. However, he will eventually develop a desperate love that will bring him to a battle against his own principles.

Ji Soo has already carved his name as one of the brightest stars of his generation. His performance in the recently concluded melodrama, When I Was The Most Beautiful, has proven his capability to top-bill high-profile series.

 

ON-HYEOP (KANG HA NEUL)

Kang Ha Neul will portray the character of On-hyeop, Ondal’s father. As the chieftain of the Sunnobu region in Goguryeo Kingdom, he was a revered general of the people who received support and loyalty from the masses. On-hyeop’s role will pave the way for the major narrative progression at the start of the drama.

Enjoying the peak of his career, Kang Ha Neul has been sweeping awards this year with his acclaimed performance in When The Camellia Blooms.

GO GEUN (LEE JI HOON)

Lee Ji Hoon will portray the role of Go Geon, Goguryeo’s elite general. Embodying the characteristics of a man with a powerful rank in the kingdom, he has the capability to mobilize people through his words. Vowing to achieve ultimate peace for the kingdom, he enters into a fierce battle with peace and order at stake.

After his exceptional presence in previous projects such as Woman Of 9.9 Billion and Dinner Mate, Lee Ji Hoon promises to deliver another unforgettable performance in this upcoming series.

HAE MO YONG (CHOI YU HWA)

Rounding up the top-notch line up of stars is Choi Yu Hwa. The actress will suit up for the role of Hae Mo Yong. The story sketches her character as a beautiful woman who possesses a special foresight and keenness to details. However, she conceals an important secret.

Choi Yu Hwa’s addition to the project will surely add a strong impact in the drama. She is currently showing impressive performance in the suspense thriller, My Dangerous Wife, as a cunning mistress.

Kang Ha-neulKim So-hyunJi SooLee Ji-hoon-I and Choi Yu-hwa have been picked up for "Moonlit River".

This drama is one of the most anticipated dramas of early next year and it is a story of Pyeong-kang who uses On-dal's heart in dreams of becoming supreme king and the mournful love story of On-dal, who only makes foolish sacrifices.

Based on the Goguryeo tales recorded in the Three Kingdoms Period, the epic poems of Pyeong-kang and On-dal, which no one knew, will be reborn as a masterpiece historical drama.

First, Kang Ha-neul will appear as On-dal's father, On-hyeob, who holds the key to the drama's early development. On-hyeop is the chief of the Sunnobu and a national general of the Goguryeo who fulfills his duties and responsibilities for the country and its tribes.

Kim So-hyun plays Pyeong-kang/Yeom Ga-jin, who was born as a princess of Goguryeo but lived as a roughneck. She will show both intelligence and cool-headedness as a woman who runs to establish the status of Goguryeo that has collapsed.

On-dal, the icon of Goguryeo's pure love, is played by Ji Soo. On-dal is a naive non-violent person who fights for his beliefs. On-dal becomes the sword of peace and goes through bitter love that's against his beliefs.

Lee Ji-hoon-I plays the role of Go-geon, the most elite general of Goguryeo. Go-geon is a man who has all the power, character and personality. For the first time in his life, he enters a fierce battle, vowing to have have Pyeong-kang for himself.

Lastly, Choi Yu-hwa plays Hae Mo-yong, a woman who decides to play with Goguryeo in the drama. Hae Mo-yong is a woman who has a great appearance, a meticulous personality, and even special foresight, and has her own big secret. Such Hae Mo-yong will have a strong impact on the story of "Moonlit River" as she cares about Go-geon.

"Moonlit River" is directed by Yoon Sang-ho and written by Han Ji-hoon. It is to premiere early next year.
