My husband is on season 5 of Money Heist and here's a kdrama he's intrigued by! But he's curious, too, about how it will play out, especially with them putting in new characters and trying to condense it to a shorter series.

I started Money Heist when it first came out but it was way too stressful for me! But I've liked Yoo Ji Tae ever since watching Healer so maybe he'll make it better .

“Squid Game” star Park Hae-soo is set to star in the Korean adaptation of the popular Spanish series “Money Heist (La Casa de Papel),” Netflix announced on Tuesday.

Park is set to play Andrés “Berlin” de Fonollosa, one of the drama’s main characters. The news of his casting hits as the original series approaches the conclusion of its five-year run on Dec. 3, and as the streamer revealed that Berlin is set to appear in an origin story spin-off scheduled for 2023.

Berlin is played by Spain’s Pedro Alonso in the original. Park is the first cast member of the Korean version to be announced.

“In the past five years, fans around the world have shown their love for the series. I hope our Korean version also receives your love and support,” said Park in a Korean video message, dressed in a dapper suit and holding one of the show’s signature heist masks. “It is an honor for me to participate in such a wonderful series and above all to make Berlin an amazing character. I’m sure the rest of the cast of the Korean version feels the same way as I do.”

He continued: “As an actor and as a fan of the series, I want to thank the cast and crew of ‘Money Heist’ for the great series they have created. We are looking forward to sharing the Korean version of Money Heist with you in 2022.”

He thanked Pedro Alonso for giving him the “famous mask” and promised to give him the one they use in the Korean version next year in return.

The news of the Korean adaptation of “Money Heist” was first unveiled last November. Series creator Alex Pina will executive produce while Kim Hong-sun (“Voice,” “The Guest”) will direct off a screenplay written by Ryu Yong-jae (“My Holo Love”).

Until the launch of “Squid Game,” “Money Heist” was Netflix’s most-watched non-English-language drama, seen by 180 million households globally.

From the iconic jumpsuits of Squid Game to the supernatural beings of Hellbound, Korean shows dominated global popular culture in 2021, and we have the numbers to prove it.

Overall, global viewing hours of our Korean shows grew six-fold last year, compared to 2019. To date, Squid Game is the biggest show we have ever launched, reigning as the most viewed Netflix show in 94 countries at its peak. In fact, 95% of Squid Game’s viewership came from outside Korea, and many of these viewers went on to explore other Korean content.

Two months after Squid Game, we launched Hellbound, whose premiere clocked 43.48 million viewing hours. Hellbound was among the Top 10 Netflix shows in 93 countries, and ranked number one in 34 countries. Sci-fi mystery The Silent Sea also made it to the number one spot on the weekly non-English Top 10 lists for its premiere.

Credit for this growing global interest goes to the talented Korean creators we have been working with for the past few years. From 2016 to 2021, we launched more than 130 Korean titles. As a result, Netflix has become a compelling destination for fans of Korean content, who know that this is the home of diverse and high-quality Korean storytelling.

As this fanbase increasingly includes viewers from all over the world, we are excited to continue collaborating with Korean storytellers to bring the K-wave to new heights.

To do that, we always ask ourselves: what are the kinds of stories that only Netflix can help these creators tell? You’ll find the answers in the more than 25 compelling Korean shows we are launching this year — our largest number to date.

‘Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area’ Unmasks Its Thrills on June 24

By Joe Cho (hcho@netflix.com), Communications | 28 April 2022

The heist genre never goes out of style, thanks to the adrenaline-pumping thrills and spills that come with trying to snare a coveted treasure. And in the case of Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area Part 1, set to premiere on June 24 with six episodes, the characters carrying out the titular heist will even be veiled in masks inspired by treasures.

The new teaser poster for this action-packed series reveals a traditional Korean Hahoe mask. It’s the perfect key visual aesthetic for this Korean remake of La Casa de Papel, the series that captured global viewers’ hearts and created a devoted fandom. Famously, the heist team in the Spanish series wore masks depicting the face of artist Salvador Dalí.

The Dalí mask even appears in the previously released title announcement, which showed the Professor (Yoo Ji-tae) — the heist’s instigator — contemplating a selection of masks. Just before we got to see which one he chose, the trailer ended, igniting much curiosity among fans.

Today, we finally answer this question with the reveal of the teaser poster, where the Hahoe-inspired mask sports a big empty smile. But the bloodstains scattered on one side of the white mask raises yet another question, foreshadowing that this heist will also entail life-threatening overturns.

Reborn in Korea, the new series is set in a fictional Joint Economic Area, in a world where the Korean Peninsula faces reunification. Besides this refreshing and alluring setting, what’s also creating excitement is the formidable cast that’s taking on the characters from the original series: Professor (Yoo Ji-tae), Berlin (Park Hae-soo), Tokyo (Jun Jong-seo), Moscow (Lee Won-jong), Denver (Kim Ji-hun), Nairobi (Jang Yoon-ju), Rio (Lee Hyun-woo), Helsinki (Kim Ji-hoon), and Oslo (Lee Kyu-ho).

The first Korean blockbuster to kick off the second half of the year, Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area Part 1 will be released on June 24, only on Netflix.

Excitement Builds for ‘Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area’, With Release of Main Teaser

By Joe Cho (hcho@netflix.com), Communications | 19 May 2022

As a border looks set to vanish, the people of a long-divided peninsula seem about to reunite — but there are unsettling consequences. That’s the intriguing premise of Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area. As the series’ new teaser reveals today, under the new economic union, “only the rich got richer.” Into this ruthless new world of inequality steps a crew of thieves from North and South Korea, led by the Professor, who set out to pull off a history-making heist.

A remake of Spanish series La Casa De Papel, Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area is the first Korean blockbuster to kick off the second half of the year, and it will feature director Kim Hong-sun and writer Ryu Yong-jae’s distinct take on this popular story.

In this new retelling, there is a Joint Security Area – located where today’s North and South Korea are divided – which contains a mint that becomes the focus of the action. Amid reunification, the mint is printing a new unified currency as the groundwork to build a stable joint economy.

Ryu was a big fan of the original Spanish series, and says: “It felt like destiny when I was offered to adapt the original story. I was intrigued by the premise of the remake because not only is it about the conflict between robbers and police, but also it adds new layers such as the tension, mistrust, and harmony between North and South Korea. A situation where thieves from Nnorth and Ssouth Korea join forces, and police from north and south join hands to stop their way adds a Korean lens into the original IP."

Kim adds: “I loved the original story. It features numerous characters, and every one of them is intriguing in their own way. I believed the characters would be fascinating whenever and wherever they are set.”

The new crew sports Hahoe masks, an iconic cultural symbol

The previously released teaser art whets audiences’ appetite for these re-imagined characters. Besides unveiling a new crew dressed in Money Heist’s signature red jumpsuits, fans also got a first look at the striking traditional Hahoe masks sported by this gang of thieves.

They have also caught a glimpse of “The Professor”, played by Yoo ji-tae (from the iconic Korean movie Old Boy). This genius strategist trying to change the world through this heist is joined by a formidable cast, including Park Hae-soo from the blockbuster hit Squid Game and Kim Yoon jin from the legendary US series Lost.

Yoo Ji-tae plays The Professor, the mastermind of the heist

"When this creative team came to us with their vision for a Money Heist remake, we saw the opportunity to bring a new perspective and uniquely Korean lens to this beloved story,” said Keo Lee, Director of Content for Netflix Korea.

“The original Money Heist demonstrated how superb storytelling can be loved everywhere, and Korean content has proven to have this same power. We can't wait to see how the world will react as we unite this epic story with top Korean talent and a passionate global fandom.”

Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area Part 1 premieres on June 24 only on Netflix.

‘Money Heist Korea’ Trailer Dropped by Netflix Ahead of June Release

By Patrick Frater | May 19, 2022

A crew of thieves including Tokyo, an ex-soldier, unite under the leadership of a mastermind known as the Professor to plan an unprecedented heist – stealing money yet to exist! If that sounds familiar, it should.

The twist is that Netflix hit series La Casa De Papel (Money Heist) has been given a cool Korean favor.

First-look footage is now available. And the K-drama reinterpretation “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area Part 1” premieres from June 24.

The plot twist is that Korea is on the verge of unification and there is a Joint Security Area – located where today’s North and South Korea are divided – which contains a mint that becomes the focus of the action.

Amid the reunification process, the mint is printing a new unified currency as the groundwork to build a stable joint economy. But despite people’s hopes for unification it seems that only the rich got richer.

The only things standing between the gangsters and their prize is a joint task force led by South Korean negotiation specialist and a North Korean agent.

The new show is directed by Kim Hong-sun and produced for Netflix by BH Entertainment and Zium Content.

“I was intrigued by the premise of the remake because not only is it about the conflict between robbers and police, but also it adds new layers such as the tension, mistrust, and harmony between North and South Korea,” said writer Ryu Yong-jae, who was also a big fan of the original Spanish series. “[It is] a situation where thieves from North and South Korea join forces, and police from North and South join hands to stop their way, [adding] a Korean lens to the original IP.”

The teaser also highlights the fan-favorite characters – Professor performed by Yoo ji-tae, Tokyo performed by Jung Jong-seo, and Berlin performed by Park Hae-soo of “Squid Game” –  all in iconic red jumpsuits, with traditional Hahoe masks.

“The original ‘Money Heist’ demonstrated how superb storytelling can be loved everywhere, and Korean content has proven to have this same power. We can’t wait to see how the world will react as we unite this epic story with top Korean talent and a passionate global fandom,” said Keo Lee, director of content for Netflix Korea.
