Oh this drama with  ensemble cast.  Just like Sky Castle was.

I see Park Sung Woong ahjusshi! I've seen a most actors in other dramas.

This wil be period drama because it's set in 1987. Maybe this will be flashback.

I'm actually looking forward to this drama. Feels like heartbreaking love story romance.  I want an old school type of romance like early kdramas.

Second tandem of  writer and director of Sky Castle.  (went to win baeksang award  for best director sky catle)

The writer for this is the one who did Gaksital aka Bridal Mask, Green Rose ( now  that's old kdrama), Home Sweet Home, Scales of Providence, Want to Love Again. Sky Castle.

JTBC have mada a statement regarding Snowdrop to clarify knetz concerns about the synopsis. :) I used google translation.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CM4huV6HRS8/

"JTBC announces its position on the controversy related to the drama'Snow Ganghwa'.

'Seolganghwa', which is scheduled to be broadcast in the second half of this year, is by no means a drama that undermines the democratization movement and glorifies the Ahn Ki-bu and spies.

'Seolganghwa' is a black comedy that satirizes the presidential election state in a confrontation between the two Koreas in the background of the military regime in the 1980s. It is also a melodrama for young men and women who are sacrificed in the tornado. ㅤ

As part of the unfinished synopsis leaked online, various criticisms continued based on specific sentences without context, but these are only speculations. ㅤ

In particular,'Nampa spies lead the democratization movement','Reflect a specific person who led the student movement to the character','Beautify the face and donation' are not only different from the contents of Seol Ganghwa, but also completely unrelated to the production intention. ㅤ

JTBC clarifies that the current controversy has nothing to do with the content and production intention of'Seolganghwa'. In addition, please refrain from reckless accusations of undisclosed dramas."

So, a controversy on a drama where none of the complaints have actually read the whole script or seen the actual show. How very American as we’ve seen this before from Netflix shows to Dr. Seuss, where controversies were overblown. Let artists tell their tale. If you don’t like it, it will be felt in the ratings. Judge it by something concrete, the show, not by synopses and snippets and names of characters that can be manipulated to meet a point of view.

Don’t be insensitive to one’s culture

it is not up to the international fandom to decide, the koreans are very sensitive to this student democracy activism history

Especially if this could involved Gwangju Massacre era. Script could be fictional but it is a topic that strikes the hearts of the Koreans.

Petition For “Snowdrop” To Stop Production Gains Over 100K Signatures

by Chaerul , March 27, 2021

JTBC has given their official statement regarding the controversy surrounding the drama "Snowdrop."  Further enraging the general public.

SBS drama series "Joseon Exorcist" was previously engulfed in controversy over its controversial distortion of historical facts, which led to its cancellation.  With the historical fiction drama's abolishment and current suffering from its losses, viewers have now shifted their focus and are voicing out their concerns against JTBC's upcoming series "Snowdrop."

The upcoming drama "Snowdrop" is a fictional series known to be based on the handwritten notes of a man who escaped from a political prison camp in North Korea.  Fans became excited upon the announcement of Jung Hae In, Kim Jisoo, Yoo In Na, and Kim Hye Yoon as leads.

It was announced that BLACKPINK's Jisoo will portray the female lead role of Eun Young Cho, a clear reference to Cheon Yeong Cho, a Korea University student who was South Korea's symbol of the democratization movement.  Cheon Yeong Cho was said to have married Jung Mun Gyeong, a genius student from Seoul National University who at the same time was a reporter for the movement.  He was accused of espionage, and suffered from severe torture.

Jung Hae In is set to play the male lead role named Im Soo Ho, a Korean-German which allegedly, is a reference to the East Berlin Incident where Koreans emigrated to escape the war and dictatorship. In 1967, South Korea's government abducted nearly 200 German citizens of Korean descent, accusing them of being North Korean spies who received orders from the North Korean embassy in East Berlin.   They were tortured to extract false confessions, and six were sentenced to death.

Along with these, the plot for the said drama was reportedly leaked, drawing great concerns among South Korean netizens accusing the series of misrepresenting the painful history of South Korean Democratic Movements.  Stating that the drama's release would undermine democracy, justify dictatorship, and romanticize North Korean spies.  The currently filming drama began to lose sponsorships  following the said issue.

On March 26th, in response to the ongoing controversy, JTBC officials have released a statement explaining their side on their official Twitter account.

JTBC's response further disappointed and enraged viewers. On the same day, a formal petition was made requesting the Blue House to put an end to the production of the controversial drama.  As of writing, 109, 286 South Koreans have signed a petition filed on the website of the Office of Korean President Moon Jae In demanding that the filming of “Snowdrop” be stopped.

In comparison, "Joseon Exorcist" received a total of 212, 781 signatures and counting.

This is sad!

The Writernim has consistently written amazing stories in her career set in "controversial" times eg Gaksital or dealing with tough topics through black comedy like SKY Castle.....

I trust her and the PDNim as I wait for this drama eagerly.... but now I may never watch a good drama but most importantly, money and time and effort invested by cast and crew could disappear down a hole called cancelled. Cancelled by people who seem to have read the scripts for all episodes and watched the drama even before it airs....

Truly sad.

Truly sad.

maybe this will make drama based on real history will decrease significantly.

all drama will be Sci Fi / Thriller / Romcom / makjang.

if there is saeguk it will be either based on novel character ( not historical related ) or a whole new fiction like kingdom for example.

ofcourse drama that based on previous incident like the gwangju or other will also reduced.

nobody would dare to take on the risk for it.

A Taxi Driver which was based on a true story related to Gwangju Massacre was well received in S.Korea.

One of the highest grossing film for that year.

Therefore, not everything related to history are been condemned. Tell the truth and no distortion, the general public will give their support. For the film, only most elements regarding his life and the events that happened to the driver outside of Gwangju are fictional. It still stick to the essence of telling the audience about the story that took place in Gwangju and what the reporter and the driver had encountered

This drama... a period love story.

Snowdrop,” which will be helmed by the director and writer of JTBC’s smash hit “SKY Castle,” will be set in Seoul in 1987. The drama will tell the love story of Im Soo Ho, a student at a prestigious university who suddenly rushes into a female dorm one day covered in blood (played by Jung Hae In), and Eun Young Cho, the cheerful and lovable student who hides him and takes care of his wounds even while facing danger under close surveillance (played by Jisoo).

Im Soo Ho, who grew up in Germany, has a gentle charm but gives off an air of hiding a secret. After falling in love with him at first sight at a social gathering, the lively Eun Young Cho happens to run into him again at her dorm, where she winds up tending to his wounds in hiding. (via soompi page 1 post)

Waiting to watch this . For the story for the actor Jang Seung Jo, Park Siung Woo and the ensemble cast. Director and writer.

More filming content. cr as tag.

Real Story of Jung Hae In's Snowdrop Revealed; Jisoo's Name in the Drama to be Changed

Reacting strongly to people's petition to ban Korean drama Snowdrop over false charges, JTBC has released the actual plot of the drama. Based on a leaked, out of context piece of the script, Jung Hae In and Jisoo starrer drama was accused of distorting Korean history by promoting authoritarianism and glorifying North Korean spies.

JTBC has jotted down the main contentions about the drama and provided explanation by revealing the actual plot related to those concerned parts. It has also announced that BLACKPINK Jisoo's name in the drama will be changed to avert any more misunderstandings.

JTBC had previously issued statement that there was no truth in the leaked script and that it was taken out of context. But still people continue to collect signatures demanding banning of the drama, that is still being filmed. From Jung Hae In's role to Jisoo' character and role of Democratic Protest in the drama, this is what JTBC has to say.

"Doubts expounded on these fragmented information while contents that were false were circulated as if they were true. Of course, this responsibility falls on the production team that failed to strictly keep these materials that are yet to be refined, under wraps," said JTBC.

Main Plot

Revealing the actual plot, the channel stated that Snowdrop does not deal with the Democratic Movement. The male and female lead do not take part in or lead the movement. It is a story of a person who is unfairly accused and suppressed as a spy during the military regime in the 80s.

Background

The theme of 1987's political situation surrounding the presidential election is the backdrop of the drama. The story will revolve around the military regime, the National Security Agency, and how they possess vested interests, conspiring with the North Korean dictatorship to maintain power.

Main Characters

Main characters are of a North Korean agent and a National Security Agent that chases him. The characters do not represent their affiliated government or organizations. They will highlight the unscrupulous greed for power to reform the regime. National Security Agency will be shown with a critical view and there is no truth in Snowdrop romanticizing espionage and the National Security Agency.

Upright officer

The National Security Agent is shown as an upright officer because of his refusal to take on a powerful role domestically. He takes up an overseas role as a Black Agent. He sticks to his principles while turning his back on the corrupt organization.

Chun Young Do

The character in the drama, played by Jisoo, with the name Eun Young Cho has no relevance to the revered activist, Chun Young Cho. But as this might cause misunderstandings, the name of the character will be changed.

Request

With these revelations, JTBC requested people to refrain from spreading and leading public opinion based on false information. "We hope that it will be acknowledged that such actions will cause severe damage and diminute the many creators that strive to make a good piece of work," said JTBC.
