Story:

 

Park Tae-Yong (Kwon Sang-Woo) and Park Sam-Soo (Bae Sung-Woo) fight for judicial victims who are falsely accused.

Park Tae-Yong is a public defender. He was born as the son of an undertaker on an island. He did not take the typical route to become a lawyer. After graduating from high school, he did not go to a university. He later passed the bar exam and became a lawyer. He is full of justice and has empathy for others. He will defend all kinds of petty offenders. A turning point occurs in his legal career when he becomes the first attorney to win a general criminal retrial case.

Park Sam-Soo is a reporter. After he graduated from a university, he worked as a non-permanent employee. Thanks to his excellent writing skills, he became a reporter. He looks for stories which are ignored or passed over by other reporters. He is easily moved to tears and is soft-hearted.

Actors Kwon Sang Woo and Bae Sung Woo will join hands as a delightful duo.

SBS’s new Friday-Saturday drama Flying Gaecheonyong (literal translation) has confirmed the casting of Kwon Sang Woo and Bae Sung Woo.

Flying Gaecheonyong tells the story of two men who represent the voices of judicial victims who are falsely accused.

Kwon Sang Woo plays Park Tae Yong, a high school graduate public defender. He uses “being nosy” and a sense of justice as his weapons. He wins the retrial of a criminal case for the first time in judicial history, marking a change in his life.

Kwon Sang Woo said, “It is an honor to meet you with a meaningful role. “I will make a good drama with great staff, so please look forward to it.”

Bae Sung Woo plays Park Sam Soo, an unemployed reporter. He leaves a successful career to look for stories that others can’t see. He meets Park Tae Yong by chance and enters the “rough” road he has never faced before.

Bae Sung Woo said, “I’m excited and thrilled to be part of a meaningful work. I will do my best to show you a great drama.”

A pleasant synergy between the two is expected. The drama will deliver a cool counterpunch to unreasonable reality, offering empathy and catharsis.

Flying Gaecheonyong is written by producer Kwak Jung Hwan and author Park Sang Kyu, who introduced the series Miss Hammurabi and Chief of Staff series. It is scheduled to air in the second half of this year.

SBS drama ‘Delayed Justice’ sends message of hope

Actor Kwon Sang-woo returns to the small screen as a public defender in SBS’ new drama “Delayed Justice.”

The Korean title for the new drama literally translates to “Fly, Stream Dragon” and is derived from a Korean idiom meaning a dragon born in a stream, similar to the expression “rags to riches.” 

Kwon takes on the role of Park Tae-yong, a lawyer who comes from humble origins with only a high school diploma. He partners with journalist Park Sam-soo, played by Bae Seong-woo, to help people at the bottom of the social ladder.

“I remember reading an article that said rags to riches doesn’t happen anymore in Korea, which made me extremely sorrowful and angry,” said director Kwak Jeong-hwan in an online press conference Tuesday. “In a drama, everything is possible. Those things that seem difficult and challenging in reality can happen in a drama. I wanted to make a drama that could relieve the anger and complaints in a fun way and quench the public’s thirst.”

Veteran actor Kwon said he was captivated by his character, who is lacking as a lawyer in many ways but makes up for it with his empathic nature and his concern for justice.

“I was excited the most for this drama than any other drama I’ve been in since my debut,” said Kwon.

The drama is based on the true story of lawyer Park Joon-young and journalist Park Sang-kyu, who succeeded in obtaining retrials for people who had been wrongfully convicted -- most famously, in a 1999 case in which three innocent people were convicted of robbery and murder, and in the 2000 murder of a taxi driver at the Yakchon five-way intersection in Iksan, North Jeolla Province.

“I was attracted to the drama because it was based on real events. Also, I was able to see both the fun aspect and the message of the drama,” said Bae.

While the drama deals with heavy subject matter, there are many lighthearted elements to keep viewers entertained.

“I think it’s meaningful for a drama to contribute to society,” said Kwak. “If the relationship between the characters striving for justice can give hope and leave an impression, I think the drama can be worth more than just a drama and can contribute to society. In that aspect, ‘Delayed Justice’ is a superb drama.”

The 20-episode drama will air on SBS at 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, starting this week.

ooh, this is really interesting and now I want to check out the drama. normally, just the tag 'based on real life events' means we are in for a ride of tears even if it is supposed to be uplifting. so it is intriguing how PDnim aims to make this drama into a fun ride. crossing fingers it is good! off to check out ep 1 & 2.

I did see it premiered last week and was wondering if I should start it.

so got around to watching ep 1 and I like it! PDnim has been very serious about putting together a plucky, uplifting drama even as it centers around rather depressing themes. what I liked about the characters of tae young and sam soon is that these two are not whiners or depressed. they accept the world they live in but at the same time are sincerely passionate about righting wrongs. so there is a shrug factor about their humble beginnings. they are neither bitter or angry about it and neither are they ashamed or super proud. it is simply part of who they are.

 

the drama also shows how going to the top schools and having this image gives an advantage to some. as sam soon says, if others wear old shoes, it is called 'vintage' but when he wears them, people see it as 'dirty' -- that was a really striking piece of dialogue but really sums up society well. it also shows the instincts vs the education system. neither men have top notch education or even scores but yet both have really good instincts when it comes to cases and a story.

 

while the drama is matter of fact about how people place importance on the right school and connections, it also shows that there will also be people who value trust, human connection and the talent. sam soon's boss took a chance on him 10 years ago and even his editor recognizes his talent. there is also a matter of fact attitude that one cannot do good without access to money and for that one needs connections. tae young thought he had hit the jackpot with the spotlight but instead finds himself financially struggling. his assistants leave for better jobs but there's not much he can do about it. one has to pay rent and food. rather than moan or get depressed, tae young congratulates his co-workers and then gathers himself to work alone. so very plucky attitude from both. also really liked PDnim's choice of upbeat music. usually in such dramas, it is all dramatic and super dark. instead, here it is almost like western cowboy gunfight kind of music but with upbeat tone. wish more would check out this drama. it looks like it will be a fun ride.

@corey ~ I wasn't sure if I wanted to watch the drama but it feels like a good cake -- as in not too dense but at the same it is not fluffy icing, if that makes any sense. so this feel is simply based on ep 1. the drama is inspired by a real life lawyer-reporter duo and some real life cases. so I like that these two guys are good at their jobs and are not naively optimistic they can change the world. instead, they have done it and believe it is possible but at the same time, are not bitter about climbing an uphill mountain. simply matter of fact about it. for the mood am in, it is a good fit for me. so am going to keep watching. check it out. maybe it is your taste.

ep 2 thoughts ~ so we get a bit more background into tae young's childhood and how that has shaped him. rather than disillusion him about life, it has made him far more empathetic and he is quite protective of his clients. as for sam soon, we can see that even though he claims to have no pride and a very strong survival instinct to be pragmatic, he is also hard working and quite focused on his goal. liked how quickly tae young and sam soon figured they are being played. now it will be interesting to see how these two combine their talents. the issue of money and opportunity is not something they can just gloss over and the drama shows well how costly it is for these men to do buck the trend. is prosector jang a sleaze person or just someone who grew up poor and decided the way of the world is to join the dark side? it was rather cute to see tae young's reaction to reporter lee -- she might be inexperienced but it looks like she is pretty smart and sincere. so will we have a budding romance there? and why does tae young have so many siblings? what does sam soon's girlfriend do? she seems very supportive of him despite him losing his job... on to next week!

ep 3 thoughts ~ the court room scene was well acted. while the girl may have lost the case, it still shows that understanding what happened to her and emotions made her feel more human -- it gives her strength to go on to the next phase as she is better able to understand how domestic violence impacted her.  liked the goo eyes reporter lee made as she was so impressed with tae young and the eye rolls sam soon made watching them -- basically all the non-shippers looking at shippers/romantics. hahahahah.. would make for great gifs -- calling @Ameera Ali...

 

like how the leads are both very empathetic individuals (in how they relate to these clients) but also highly pragmatic and want to make money. neither of them are rich and there are bills to pay. so it is good tae young is not expecting his family to live on air and is concerned about their own welfare as well. he also wants to be famous and validated. will he find his philanthropist soon? will tae young be able to keep the fee and pay off his debts?

 

it was fun to see the dentist lend him money only for the purpose of having people sued. LOL. kind of nutty but it makes for good entertaining commentary on society and divorce. it makes sense why the trio would take the money -- after all, a retrial could take five years. so it is a realistic view on justice and how people's way of making peace with an imperfect system.

TBH, at first I wasn't interested in this drama. A few days ago I was surfing the channels and stumbled upon this drama ; I only watched a couple of scenes ; e.g. the one when Mayor Kang bullied Park Sam Soo (who was assigned to interview him by his ambitious boss) and the one when the three wrongfully accused men begged Park Tae Yong to represent them for a retrial. I thought that this is just ordinary power-corrupt-office drama. Moreover in that channel, this drama is titled Fly River Dragon (which was quite uninspiring for a noob like me).

 

Then I read the description and the synopsis. The fact that this drama is based on true story intrigued me. So I gave it a try for 3rd and 4th episodes. Wow, turned out it's more than the usual zero to hero trope or legal drama. 

It's also depicting David vs Goliath-style  battle, the blatant power abuse and manipulation by law enforcers from the basic to highest levels, that the case the Park duo is fighting for and their efforts seem hopeless against all odds. Considering that this story is based on real events, it is quite disconcerting for me ; imagining that even if only some portions of what are depicted in the drama really happened IRL, that's so horrible.

 

 

However the bleakness of their predicament is tempered by the warm and realistic portrayal of each main characters' background, personality and their interactions ; sometimes these things lead to hilarious and comical moments that lighten the atmosphere of the drama.

One more thing, (I will confess first that I haven't watched first and second episodes properly and even missed some scenes in 3rd and 4th ones).

Is Park Tae Yong really married with kids? Is that really his wife and kids that currently live with him?

Because he seems smitten and sometimes quite flirtatious with Yoo Kyung.

 

I will try to keep watching this drama, if my situation allows. Because frankly speaking, I'm also lagging behind and have to catch up  with Money Flower rewatch event (mianhae, fellow Money Flowerers). So....we'll see.

I think it is his sister's kids but not too sure. yet to catch ep 4. he also has a half brother who is studying for university and so it is quite possible that the two kids are also some sort of half siblings as his father seemed to have other women...

The real identity of the woman living with him is not clear yet for me.

They talked about the mundane household stuff like rent, deposit money etc. But they never use any distinguishing words yet;  like noona or yeobo or whatever while addressing each other.

I really hope it's really his sister and the kids are his siblings/nephew/niece.

This drama is not melodrama or romance-centered, I know it will focuse on legal processions and investigations not on romantic relationships.

Still I'm not really keen on watching extramarital affair twist.

in the press conference article, the PD said he wanted to create a cheerful upbeat drama that lifts spirit of viewers and will give viewers an optimistic feeling that things can be good. so given that attitude of PD and that it is based on real life person who have good reputation, don't think we will see a twist of an affair. more likely, it is some sort of sibling or cousin type relationship....

She is his sister.

 

Tae-Yong lives with his younger brother Tae-Seong (studying for his college exam), younger sister, and her two children. So the two kids are his nephew and niece.

 

It's very sweet how he takes care of all of them.

So this is a really good show, so far. I have never seen any previous Kwan Sang-Woo show before, but he's pretty great here. And Bae Seong-Woo is a major powerhouse actor.

 

It's apparently a true story, and the script was written by the character Sam-Su is based on, which is pretty cool. (His name is Park Sang-Gyu.)
