Synopsis:

In the age of the Great Liang Dynasty, the Kingdom of Northern Xuan gained a short reprieve after a war. Chang Geng, who resides in a small town, was attacked by a pack of wolves during an outing, but was saved by Shen Shiliu. To repay his kindness, Chang Geng acknowledges him as his foster-father. The enemy forces, the Heavenly Wolf tribe waited for an opportunity to invade and set off a war. In a critical moment, Chang Geng discovers that he is the fourth prince of Northern Xuan, and Shen Shiliu is Gu Yun, the commander of Xuan Tie army. Gu Yun defeated the Heavenly Wolf tribe, and escorted Chang Geng to the capital city.

The current Emperor of Northern Xuan passes away, and Li Feng ascended the throne as the new Emperor. However his foundation is not yet stable. The ambitious Prince of Wei is eyeing his throne, and saw this as an opportunity to create a crisis. Li Feng, wary of Gu Yun's military powerless, sends Gu Yun to guard the boarders. Chang Geng also chooses to join the Linzhou Court, and followed the experts of the court around the world to travel and experience life. After several years, he grew up into a talented person with ambition and a talent for governing. At this time, Northern Xuan faces both internal and external problems. Chang Geng returns to the capital, and uses his knowledge and new-found skills, assists the Emperor in securing his reign. However, problems continuously pour in, such as rebellion by the inner court officials, assassination of Li Feng and Jiang Nan being attacked by external forces. At last, Chang Geng manages to ascend the throne and resurrect Northern Bei, fulfilling his vision of world peace.

The story is based on a fairly well known novel by priest, the author also wrote the novel Guardian is based on. I'm excited to see Tan Jianci finally getting lead role, since I really liked his performance in Advisor Alliance and he was the bright spot in 2018's Never Gone. I skipped out on the new Handsome Siblings so I haven't seen Chen Zheyuan, fingers crossed the script and production team is good.

Based on info from twitter this SPL is set for Q2 2021 airing! Can't wait! This is like one of Priest best novel ever and both Tan Jian ci and Chen Zi Yuan looking so pretty in the stills. Ohmg Gu Yun is like one of the best character she ever written too yumm..

Hi everyone! September is already around the corner, and we still have nothing (((. In addition, I've just watched one blogger's review of some rumored decisions made by officials re the industry, among them a decision is rumored to be "no bl dramas in 2021".

I enjoy Chen Zhe Yuan's acting a lot,  and since other highly anticipated drama with him playing a supporting role-the Golden Hairpin- is gone now,I am waiting patiently for Winner is King, so I'm now a bit nervous.

I wonder if there are any news or/and updates re this drama?)))

Yeah, I agree that this may fall under the BL drama restriction or the girly looking guy restriction.

So many dramas getting postponed these days.

Winner is King? It's the stupidest English name they could come up with.

Why couldn't they keep the original name?

 

 Anyway, this is based on a novel titled Sha Po Lang (杀破狼). To be frank, I can't see this turning out well as the novel has steampunk technology, which will be difficult to include in the drama if their budget is limited. But if they remove those elements, they'll need to rewrite the plot heavily and it just can't turn out well. I'm sure they are going with the second route though... for reasons... In the novel, the romance actually plays a very important role in plot progression, and turning it into 'bromance' will just not work in the setting (why would an adopted son be obsessed to such an extent with the father who adopted him?) - I'm rather dreading the final result... It's not like the writers can make it into 'becoming inseparable best friends' because the two leads are already family...

It is my understanding, that sometimes is done to help the drama in order to pass the censorship, I mean, to decrease the level of "association" between BL original and the drama (and vice versa).

But they kept the Chinese name of the novel for the drama... It's only the English title that doesn't make sense.

Then, I really don't know . Who knows what is required/requested to be done in order for the drama in China to be broadcasted...

Is “Winner is King” really the official title? It sounds like a direct translation of 胜者为王。 I guess they feel Sha Po Lang has limited attraction for English-educated viewers. In any case, the Chinese name is unlikely to be the same. I saw word that the Chinese title has been changed to 烽火流金.
 

I very much doubt any BL drama will be screened in the near future. I’m a little concerned whether BL authors will be affected by the direction of the new policies. For instance, Priest has been requested to make changes to works that have been adapted to dramas, both the ones already broadcast and those waiting to be broadcast.
