I think it's safe to say that this writer, director, and this drama is on my never again list. There's no sugarcoating it, because it was horrible from episode 20 going forward. I don't care. Villians getting their desserts on the last episode does nothing justify the complete incompetent writing and directing of this drama. If this was billed as a comedy, maybe I would change my mind.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I was excited for the show at the beginning with  Taepoong’s excellent acting and his mother,  who is a fabulous actor. The drama went downhill when Taepoong became “normal” adult and his mother died.

The writer wasted everyone’s acting skills with the awful script full of irredeemable characters. Couldn’t stand watching YR. I had to stop for a while because she grossed me out with her screams and nastiness.

YJ could not dress worse if I dressed her and the writer made this beautiful actress the most boring wet doormat character on TV. The writer did her best and succeeded in making every single character of the show worse and less than what they could have been. Such a shame.  No saving grace for this writer.

The PD should thank the actors for saving the show with their acting. They did their best to make something out of such horrid writing.

I’m glad the drama is over. I hope the actors get better work for the sacrifice they made in this show.

I think most of revenge drama focus on villains. I am not surprised that YR was under the spot. We saw this in Left Handed wife, A place in the sun, Fatal promise. So it is not a matter of bad writing. It is the case in most revenge drama. Kang Eun Tak did a good job. Lee Chae young was good too. Most of the actors and actresses were acceptable. I don't expect much of revenge drama.

choices.

I appreciate that so much from the writer.  I think maybe this story isn’t about revenge but about THE VEIL PEOPLE WEAR WHEN THEH ARE AROUND PEOPLE.

In that case, it should be Man with a veil, behind a veil, hidden by a veil. It's not like in a fog, in a shroud, in a shadow...

but kdrama titles have always bamboozled me. So there may be a valid reason for the name.

We sometimes forget that writers write characters that they want, not necessarily following some psychological profile or genetic pattern. So we try to analyse why TP, SJ, Joo etc. did what they did.

This writer seemed to have thrown everything in to attract viewers. What is the logic of operating on TP in ep 105? Was it to make him normal? Not from my side. I actually watched more than 90 % of the episode. Almost all.

I would have liked it if YR regrets not giving the bone marrow to DH, because now it would be his turn to donate.

Bye again chingus... I found  a show called meal or supper something which is like a modern Dae Jang Geum. Come join me. No revenge.

I agree. I ain’t revisiting this drama or touching anything by this writer ever again, it gives me the same level of disgust as Wanna Taste and its writer. I honestly feel bad for LCY having to spent so much energy playing YR, it feels like she would’ve had a much more relaxing time playing horror.

I really don’t like the overdelayed retribution for the baddies too, I get it that they feel like they’d run out of some more drama but even “happy endings” can have some drama after that, just like you can still have feuds after marriage. It’s more realistic like that for me.

sorry about that; usually set it for 3 days but this time, did it really quickly and I didn't check the date. :sweatingbullets:

You mean Good Supper/Be a meal. Right? I started it a month ago lol. I am unable to catch up though. It is different. By the way, Jae Hee and the old woman are enemies :D I expect revenge

I just started a week ago . The old lady is real piece of work. Her husband is clueless to what is going on . I miss the child actors , they act better then the adults. I also expect lots of revenge and as usual a love triangle.

Liked how the series finished with YR, JH and Mr Koo having their crimes exposed in court.

What I did not like was YJ SJ love line.  If the writer intended to make them related by blood he should never gone with a story line which put them together.  For me it was quite off putting to watch and altered the perspective on how I viewed YJ and SJ.  Also the Han family, I felt their punishment was not enough especially the mum,  she  was plain awful for 95% of the series and I was not buying her redemption.

Enjoyed everyone comments. Look forward to reading your comments in other series.

My final thoughts on the drama overall:

Spoiler

I've been a long time K-drama watcher since 2001 and to be honest.... I thought the drama was okay. Considering how over the years, the plot in daily dramas mostly seem not-so-great for me, so to be honest it was okay for me lol. I did like TP & YJ as couple though. When it came to the frustrating parts of the plot (Yura, etc.) I just skimmed through the parts and I was fine. I mean I was frustrated with the drama, but not nearly as much as everyone else was, I think. Honestly, Kang Eun Tak's 'Beautiful You' (2015) was 10 times more frustrating than this drama was for me. Maybe it's because I was doing full-blown detailed episode recaps for 'Beautiful You' in the soompi thread when it aired, so I guess I was WAY more frustrated then lol.

To begin with, I only chose to watch this because I'm familiar with the actors & actresses. I still watch miniseries length (16-20 episodes) dramas all the time, but when it comes to daily dramas, I'm really picky with choosing unless there's an actor/actress I really like because I know daily dramas will get frustrating—at least in my experience. The only daily drama that I would recommend is 'Ugly Alert' (2013). 'Ugly Alert' is the one daily drama that I genuinely enjoyed.

But reading all of the interviews and messages from the actors, actresses and staff... it sounds like they had so much fun filming together. I'm glad for that at least. I always love seeing their cute interactions with each other on Instagram, so that was fun at least. (Even though they're back to posting their day-to-day regular pics, the actors/actresses are still having cute interactions in each other's comment sections on Instagram. It's really cute honestly. ^^)

Also, random comment, but since everyone kept mentioning Yujung (Uhm Hyun Kyung)'s outfits...  it was Hyun Kyung's stylist, Yuju who chose the outfits. Hyun Kyung thanked her for choosing the 200+ outfits for the drama, haha.

Those are all of my thoughts. Sorry that was all over the place lol. This is my final big post here. See you all in another thread... which will probably be soon because I'm always on soompi, haha.

Goodnight. MAoiu9n.gif

Lol well, I did say my previous post would be my last, but turns out it wasn't. bFXOHkk.gif

Lee Si Kang did a interview after I posted my last post so here I am back again. 0hYmPwv.gif

I also posted some other things I missed aside from Lee Si Kang's interview. The only one of the main cast who hasn't done an official interview is Uhm Hyun Kyung, but I'm not sure if she plans to do any interviews, so this should be my last post... I think. echrUod.gif

(Also side note, Lee Chae Young did more interviews, but her answers are pretty similar to her previous interviews I posted so just check my previous post for that. The only new thing she mentioned in the interview was that she didn't have time to do anything else because she was so busy filming the drama. So now she wants to see the dramas and movies she didn't have time to watch.)

EDIT: AH, I forgot to add this in. But here's the video of Kang Eun Tak & Lee Chae Young winning their awards at the 2020 KBS Drama Awards with English Subtitles.

A Man in a Veil - Lee Si Kang's Interview Post-Drama (English Translation):

(*He did multiple interviews a few days ago, but I decided to compile it into multiple parts—it would be even longer if I didn't. Also the translation is loosely summarized through Google Translate & Papago.)
Interview Part 1 (His General Comments):

[Note from the author, for those interested: "Lee Si Kang, a former soccer player turned to an actor after debuting in a Kpop idol group 'KINO' in Japan in 2011, has shown his presence in various dramas and musicals. He is also drawing attention as a rising Hallyu star thanks to the appearance as the main character of the Taiwanese drama "Because Of You" and the airing of "Man in a Veil" in Japan."]

His comments:

I cried a lot when I saw the ending. At first, I didn't understand [the ending]. I was sad, but I thought [Seo Jun] would sacrifice himself to make everyone happy. I thought no one would predict it, but there were many people who thought Seo Jun was going to study abroad. The death was a shock and twist to me, too. I cried a lot at the end because it was so emotionally hard to act the scene. It hurt my heart, and I had to let him go, but it was heavy. It was really hard mentally, but I was able to finish the shoot happily thanks to the cast and crew.

I don't know if I look rich, but I played the role of a chaebol. Seo Jun is also a person who has a lot of money, but is not authoritative. The drama made me want to be an actual chaebol who spends money.

I feel relieved. Maybe it's because of its good ratings, but I'm realizing the drama's popularity through SNS [social media].  Even though I wear a mask and a hat, people take good care of me when I go to a restaurant, and when I pass by, they open the car door and hand me candy. I think it's because I seem friendly, but I'm grateful. Many people call me by my name in the drama and tell me that they're heartbroken [for me]. It made me think, "This must be the power of the drama ratings."

While filming, there were many disruptions and difficulties due to COVID-19, but I think it's a great relief that it ended well without an accident.

I thought that when I went to the villain position with Cha Seo Jun's true heart, I could be understood by many people about what I did. I think that's why many people understood and loved Seo Jun.

As the drama developed, it was really hard. I had a lot of worries, but I am very grateful as an actor in that I encountered Cha Seo Jun. It was a time where I could grow as much as I had difficulty, and I want to sincerely thank Seo Joon."

There were quite a lot of things I talked about and tried to do with Uhm Hyun Kyung. As a result, there was good chemistry, and I think many viewers cheered for Seo Jun and Yu Jung a lot. I also think about how great it would have been if Seo Jun was able to be with Yu Jung. My love style is also very straightforward [like Seo Jun]. If you like someone in a relationship, it's very straightforward for me.

'Man in a Veil' is another work that allowed people to know the existence of an actor named Lee Si Kang, and I am very grateful. As a person who knew and tried to understand Seo Jun the most, it was so hard. I think that's how much I remember him. Thankfully, I think it will be a great help to my life as an actor.

I knew it was a tough journey because I've already filmed a daily drama before. Since I worked with such good people, it feels like it's only been about two months, and time went by so quickly. The daily drama itself is live, so it's fun. In fact, Seo Jun's emotional lines were difficult, so I was worried until the filming began. But there was a lot of joy from that as well. I think it was fun because I was able to do a lot of acting that challenged me.

This is a picture I took while preparing for a 'Men's Health' pictorial. It was difficult, but I was an athlete [before]. I am [also] very interested in fashion, and my hobby is managing. I did a lot of healing when managing my time. Because of that, I think it was relatively easy to finish the drama filming.

Because there were such [shirtless] scenes in the middle of the filming, I managed my body well during that time. I spent a little time every day, whether it was 10 or 20 minutes. The 'Men's Health' pictorial filming took place in 3 days. It feels like I've been rewarded for doing well.

I was also surprised by the drama production crew. At first, they asked, 'Can you film a scene shirtless?'. But after the filming, they shared my picture in the group chat and was proud. The writer also tried to appeal to me a lot about that.

We have a separate group chat room for all the actors & actresses from the drama, I'm very close with everyone in the drama. I usually call Kim Hee Jung and Lee Il Hwa "Noona". They love me a lot and complimented me a lot. I had a lot of emotional scenes with my mother in the drama, and I think it came out well because Hee Jung noona was acting with me.

In reality, there is a lot of difference with me and Seo Jun. (laughs) I usually use subways and buses, and I prefer walking. I think I walk around for about an hour each day. I'm living a very different life from Seo Jun. (smiles)

In the future, it would be fun to challenge the opposite role. I also want to challenge the role of psychopath and transform myself into a complete evil [character]. If I have a chance to play a role such as "Penthouse" Joo Dan Tae, played by Uhm Ki Joon, I would like to try it as an actor. I want to be remembered as an actor who others want to work with and an actor who is good at acting.

I have been active in dramas, movies, plays, musicals—all that involve acting, but each tastes different. I want to try more movies, too. I want to go all-out with my acting like now. I will try harder in the future so that I can show a good performance to everyone.

Interview Part 2 (Q&A):

Spoiler

tWv1uwO.png

Q: How do you feel about the end of the show?
A: I worked hard for about 8 months. I am grateful that it ended well without any accidents and no confirmed cases in the COVID-19 situation. Also, I'm so thankful that the ratings are good. I had a lot of difficulties playing Cha Seo Jun, but I think it's a time when I grew up a lot as an actor.

Q: Why do you think 'Man in a Veil' has received so much love?
A: I think there was a freshness about the cast. There were many actors & actresses who didn't appear too often in daily dramas. Senior cast members also felt that they were young. So, Hong Il Kwon, who appeared as my father, wondered whether he could look like a father. And no one made too many NG's.

Q: What do you think is the charm of 'Man in a Veil'?
A: The development was really fast. Of course, some of the development was frustrating, but I also had the charm of actors and actresses who were with me. And Cha Seo Jun's complex emotional lines was the charm. Han Yu Jung and Cha Seo Jun did not get together, but I acted with the goal of doing well with Han Yu Jung. I acted with the thought that it would be nice to hear that Han Yu Jung and Cha Seo Jun fit well. Thanks to that, there were a lot of people who supported Yu Jung and Seo Jun.

Q: What were you afraid of when you played Cha Seo Jun?
A: When I received the role of Cha Seo Jun, I was greedy because I thought I could play a lot of emotions. Compared to the synopsis, the emotional lines in the script were more dynamic, so I was mentally tired and scared. I was worried about how to express it, but I was able to act with more thoughtfulness. The entire synopsis started from the beginning. So Cha Seo Jun's sincere heart was important. Cha Seo Jun tried to express his true heart in the relationship with everyone he met. I tried to look sincere when dealing with Yoo Min Hyuk, when I loved Yoo Jung, and when I treated my mom or dad. The writer also left a lot of things open about the lines. The actors & actresses could interpret it as they wanted. Ah, different words can be different, I also had a lot of worries about it.

Q: What did you think about Cha Seo Jun's death ending?
A: When Cha Seo Jun died, I was so sad that I wondered if he should die even though I was a poor child. As an actor, the depth of emotion was strong. Still, I acted with the thought that everyone could be happy at the expense of me. Also, I wondered if only the death of Cha Seo Jun could stop his mother.

Q: What was your impression of the final episode?
A: The last episode was like a causal retribution for having solved everything and received all the compensation. Cha Seo Jun did a good job at ending the game, so it seemed to have been resolved. He felt as if he had reaped what he sowed. So, Seo Jun must have been happy as he died.

Q: You haven't been in a daily drama in a long time, did you feel any pressure?
A: I didn't take a break from acting, so I didn't feel pressured. But I was casted last out of all the actors & actresses. There were already people who were doing a lot of things, so it was a burden to act together at first. I didn't want to be harmed and I wanted to do well. The writer really wrote Cha Seo Jun well. I thought he would be a villain, but he wrote me as a very complex character.

Q: How was your chemistry with Kim Hee Jung, who plays the role of your mother, Joo Hwa Yeon?
A: My first filming was with my mother, actress Kim Hee Jung. At that time, Kim Hee Jung said, "You were good." During the script reading, she said, "You were good." That really helped me a lot. There were always many scenes with strong emotions when we met, but not one scene was NG. I once wondered what if I didn't cry a few times, but I cried when I held Kim Hee Jung's hand. She also loved me so much that it was fun to act.

Q: How was your chemistry with Lee Chae Young?
A: I didn't talk about acting with Chaeyoung as much as I could. We wouldn't show each other what our characters were about to do. That's why the chemistry was better. She acted to make her character survive somehow. So, I would say that she did not show her hand until rehearsal, but acted together well in the main filming.

Q: How did you get along with Kang Eun Tak?
A: I maintained a close relationship with Eun Tak hyung, even before we started [filming]. I thought that would be a plus factor. In fact, I treated him like my own brother. So the bromance went well in the beginning.

Q: Do you want to try a daily drama again?
A: I don't think of daily dramas as a separate genre. If I have a role in the drama, then I want to work together well. I have no prejudice against it. What I like is acting. It's just a slightly different environment and framework, but it's important to just want to do good projects with good people.

Q: What kind of actor would you like to be remembered as?
A: As somone who's a good actor. I hope that there will be a perception that I'm a good actor and that working with me is fun.

Q: What role do you want to try in the future?
A: There are many characters I haven't experienced yet, but I want to play an evil role and act like a psychopath. Also, I like the romantic-comedy genre, so I want to try them. I hope I can have a good project and act well because I have many experiences that I have never done before.

Q: Is there anything you want to say to the viewers?
A: Thank you so much for your interest and love. It must have been a hard time during COVID-19, but I'm thankful that our drama cheered many people up. I think I will feel empty after this project for a while. But I will also prepare hard so that I can greet you with another good project. I hope you'll pay a lot of attention to Lee Si Kang when he comes out on TV. (laughs)

  • 1 year later...

Actually just start to watch this series yesterday. Now only on Episode 07 and I already find
Yeo Sook-Ja very pretentious, high and mighty, nosy as in wanting to know what's going on in Lee Kyung-Hye life. YSJ forgets she is there as a House helper and not a family member. Even as a family member there is certain area to keep her nose out of. She thinks so highly of her daughter Yoo-Ra and will condone whatever Yoo-Ra do. She is not even appreciative of Yoo-Jung considering Yoo-Jung is doing odd jobs to help out financially. And what a mother to give the credit card that Yoo-Jung gave her to use and YSJ gave it to Yoo-ra to go spend freely? She is so cold to Yoo-Jung and so warm to Yoo-Ra.  Why is it the fault of Tae-Poong that Yoo-ra is PREGNANT? YSJ believes wholeheartedly what Yoo-ra says. Salute Tae-Poong despite being "not that smart" he still tells the truth when Yoo-Jung ask him. Oh yes another ingrate is Han Yoo-Myung. Up to Episode 07...I still have no idea what is he doing as in "is he working?" or just sponging off his father and sister Yoo-Jung?

Both YSJ and Yoo-ra looks down on Mr Han. So what Mr Han is working as a chauffeur? At least he is doing an honest living and that chauffeur gave his family a roof to shelter from.  Mr Han is so different in terms of attitude thinking from YSJ. YSJ tendancy to overstep her boundaries and thinking Ms Lee owes her. At times I wonder who is the boss here?

Watching this series for Kang Eun-Tak, Yang Mi-Kyung, Choi Jae-Sung. These are 3 amazing artistes who shines in whatever role they are in. And just for these 3...i will continue watch on.

No...i have not read any sharing here but will do so when i finish this entire series.

Thanks to all who pop by and Stay Safe wherever you are
