[Drama 2020/2021] Queen Cheorin/Mr. Queen, 철인왕후

So Yong mentioned to that it was her dream ever since she was young to be the Queen. Could it be that she liked then Crown Prince Cheol Jeong hence she wants to be a Queen (aka his wife)? Also, I wonder what she meant when she told Hwa Jin that "she will also lose someone precious to her".... I wish the real So Yong gets a character development because she seems to have an interesting backstory, maybe with the help of Bong Hwan.

Can we have an entire episode dedicated to their nightly um.....interactions? Things are so much more interesting in the night. I’m also becoming more hopeful about the romance with each episode because there’s too much development going on for that to not happen.

I'm with you. When King and Queen in their room in nights, both of them were so interesting together... Even though previously, the King was full of lie in front of the Queen, but maybe after this episode 4, if they're together again in same room, they might bickering each others...

Same! I am also a big fan of Chinese drama even though the end was some strange. But Korean version is currently even better in many moments. More serious, deeper characters, and stronger intension between the King and the Queen.

I'm also curious about the story for this Korean version. Even though they said that this drama not related to any history, but they wouldn't make it too much different from the whole pattern that should be happened. Sorry to mention another Novel to chinese drama adaption become korean drama adaption "Scarlet Heart Ryeo", this drama was an adaption version from the Chinese drama version, and they could make it not to much different from the whole history pattern.

Spoiler

Oh yah, for the next week. Curious about some people who wanna ask King a petition to demotion the Queen. Is that Kim or Jo clan? Because as I remember, Great Queen Dowager's little brother said to cut off the problems, and I'm afraid that refers to the Queen, they wanna throw the Queen...

Nah because of this demotion, from Kim clan, maybe this will make King become sure that Queen is different from Kim Clan, from his Great Queen Dowager. Remember that he already said that to his brother in episode 4.

Or because of this Queen's demotion, this will make Queen join in hands with King, and agree to bear offspring for the King. Hahahahahaha... Just like in Chinese version, the Queen agreed to sleep with the King to keep her position as a Queen.

Interesting series.

From what I gather so far:

Bong Hwa (the male chef) is smart and has high adapt skills. But he is still very self-center. This reflects in his actions. He wants to be on the Kim clan side because in history, it is the winning side.

On the hand, we're being revealed little by little how miserable Se Yong (the real queen)'s life is. It seems that even since getting in palace, she can see the chaos, the lies and the tensions between the family. She doesn't get the king love and being used by the Kim clan for political move. That short flash back of her crying in hiding really reflect how trapped she feel... that poor woman. She feels like the palace life changing her (maybe she realised she start to be more cynical and evil which she feels conflict with her own gentle heart. )

I wonder how the society back then see suicide. Do the king now feel more sympathise toward her knowing she wanted to kill herself even though she was about to become queen and technically possess more power? People wouldn't understand why she seeks death if she were about to have everything in their eyes. Or would that be taboo or crime to commit suicide?

My guess is as Bong Hwa found out more about Se Yong life, he will start feeling sympathised with her. I can imagine his character development is that he will be less selfish and use his smart wit to help the good guy (which I believe is the king in this series).

Same here! When she begged the king to love her, how sad. Begging for a man's love is a big no no. Not only it makes her look miserable but also makes him pushed her away. I mean, you deserves someone better, girl. She always been suspected by the king, even he attempted to murder her. No matter what happened or how many good things she do she is always seen as 'scheming evil' one because of her clan, and coz the king only have eyes for Jo Hwa-jin.

So I'm glad she has Byung-in, Hong yeon and court lady choi at her side. Having someone that promised to protect you and actually kept his promise is a boon. Especially if you are staying inside a palace.

Hi! :star:

So, I'm still convinced that there's more to the king's feelings than what we see. He cherishes the person who saved his life when he was a child and I bet Hwajin isn't that person. I think he feels indebted to her and has decided to repay her no matter what. Even if that means repaying with his death. Does he love her? No. It's deep gratitude and the concubine is manipulating him with lies. I think HJ hates SY so much because she knows SY is the real hero. In the intro analysis someone posted here, the person who saved his life was little Soyong and I truly believe that's the OTP of the show. They have a childhood connection and in kdramaland universe that can only mean one thing: #fated soulmates.

I'm also not buying that CJ was going to kill SY/BH. When he kept his brother from killing her and said he would do it, he took his sweet time to even start threatening her. He was stalling and trying to figure out how to avoid killing her. If he had wanted her dead, he would've knifed her right away, but he didn't because he wasn't able to. When he fed her the truth serum, he would've fed her poison and get it over with, but he didn't because deep down he didn't want to.

I also think that his reasons for disliking her go beyond the family she belongs to. I mean, it does make sense from his POV. Families used to raise their children to fulfil a selfish purpose back then. However, I think he was initially developing a soft corner for her (maybe not romantically) and something changed his mind and made him deeply dislike her. I don't think he's falling in love with the new SY, I think he's slowly remembering his first impression of the SY he once cared about. Remember we were told that she used to be lively and sweet before the palace changed her. I think he met the good SY before she turned into the lonely witch, and that this SY was somehow meaningful to him. He took that hairpin with him and didn't return it after all. What for? That's his subconcious that keeps playing tricks on our king. Her hairpin means something to him. I'm curious to find out what.

SY was being threatened with something and she decided to take her own life to avoid doing what her family (?) wanted her to do. She was between a rock and a hard place and figured killing herself would protect Cheoljong from her family because they wouldn't be able to use her against him.

Another thing, there was an obvious foreshadowing when the cousin visited that guy who investigated the origin of CJ's piece of cloth. The guy said that cousin could visit him whenever he needs something "dirty" done. Since cousin seems to think that SY had feelings for him, he'll probably go nuts when he finds out that SY still loves the king and won't answer his feelings. I think he'll go to the dark side eventually and I think his family is bad news too.

I agree with you. Especially about kings feeling towards queen. Sometimes it seems to me that he is actually in love with her but doesn’t realise it. And yes, he tried to avoid killing her every time.

I love the pervert royal couple! I can't stop fangirling over the FL. She's amazing! Her mannerisms are spot on! My confused heart has fallen for the King too.His face is adorably cute!

I cannot figure out the concubine yet. She seems to be too good to be true. Everything about her screams perfection, innocence, purity, beyond anything evil.

Anyone has any guesses who the masked man torturing the concubine's maid was. He's pure evil!

This has become my most anticipated drama. I look forward to it so eagerly. I was not ready to say goodbye to Joseon dynasty after I binged watched 100 days My Prince. I am glad I met Mr. Queen to give me my weekly dose of Joseon dynasty.

Could anyone please give suggestions for historical romantic dramas? I have not explored this genre yet. But it intrigues me. The costumes, the palace politics, the jaw dropping action sequences.... are enough to keep anyone on the edge of their seats.

I observed the relationship chart again and I just realized that the king's brother, Prince Yeongpyeong has arrow to king's concubine with the word "affection". I think we will fully see that when the king falls for the queen later.

Spoiler

credit to the owner

We can see when the king start wavering with his feeling towards the queen after their confrontation and wondering if it is true that the queen is evil like he believed before in episode 4, his brother didn't seem to like it. His brother mentioned thing like "You must focus on the righteous goal", "If the results are righteous, the means are also righteous".

I believe when concubine realized that the king falls for the queen, she will start scheming to get the king affection back. The info below Hwa Jin mentioned that "Her heart gradually darkens in attempt to protect her love with the King Cheoljong"

When the king's brother see how pitiful the concubine in attempt to get king's affection back, I wonder if he will resent/blame the queen. I'm just hoping he won't betray the king and then sacrifice himself to make up for his mistake.

Spoiler

When the king and queen fall with each other and they cooperate with each other against enemies, I think all these characters have potential for sad/tragic ending because of their reasons:

1)King's concubine, Hwa Jin: she will does some scheme when king falls for the queen.

Potential ending: die/banish from the palace.

2)Kim So Yong's cousin, Byung In: after hearing the queen's confession that she tried to commit suicide before wedding and later know that king tried to kill the queen that night, he will scheming because he think the king didn't deserve the queen. Don't forget that his father, Kim Jwa Geun is also the king greatest enemies since he hold power more than the king himself.

Potential ending: die to protect the queen from his father's scheme after realized that the queen falls for the king

3)King's brother, Prince Yeongpyeong: has affection for Hwa Jin and one of the king's ally

Potential ending: die to protect Hwa Jin/his brother

Of course all these characters ending are just my assumption but in historical drama especially if the setting is involving palace we know that it is usual for the screenwriter to kill off one of the support characters (usually second male lead) whenever there is a plot about fighting for the power/throne LOL

This "feed you the potion/medicine through my kiss" scene is one of the usual trope scene between main couple in my experience of watching Chinese dramas but I'm still squealing when that happen between our royal couple here LOL

i dont watch much saeguk, but i'll recommend empress ki and dong yi (and dae jang geum if you haven't seen it). just the classics. if you watch chinese dramas, scarlet heart (there's also a korean remake of this series) and nirvana in fire are highly recommended

To be honest I watch Chinese historical dramas more than the Korean historical dramas since China produces more historical dramas than Korea and I love watching the varieties of Chinese historical costumes from different dynasties while Korea usually produce historical dramas from Joseon dynasty like Mr Queen.

But thankfully, there will be upcoming Korean historical dramas with a different dynasty, Goguryeo:highonflowers:

https://mydramalist.com/68055-cut-to-heart

Korean historical costumes from different dynasty:

http://kkul-jaem.blogspot.com/2017/02/1336-if-you-could-wear-clothing-from.html

Anyway, if you like historical drama with amount of romcom like "Mr Queen", you will like "The Romance Of The Tiger And Rose".

It is a low budget Chinese time travel drama (the main female lead is a screenwriter and time travel from the real modern world to her script world) but the main couple (main cast: Zhao Lu Si and Ding Yu Xi) is so cute and have good chemistry together:fullofhearts:

This one is my top favorite for Chinese historical drama in the tragic historical romance genre:

https://mydramalist.com/21684-good-bye-my-princess

Spoiler

The main female lead costumes as ninth princess and then crown princess are so gorgeous and not to mentioned that the actress, Peng Xiao Ran really looks like as a beautiful princess in historical time with her costumes here.

Some people complained about this drama because it seem to focus more about the political part than romance part but I love it. And the novel, it is more heart wrenching:tears:

https://www.novelupdates.com/series/eastern-palace/

@poopytubby mentioned about drama Scarlet Heart.

There are 2 version, the first version is Chinese drama in 2011

https://mydramalist.com/2969-scarlet-heart

Spoiler

while second version is the Korean drama in 2016

https://mydramalist.com/15999-moon-lovers-scarlet-heart-ryeo

For me, I like the original version more. Spoiler for anyone who dislike sad ending, it is not a happy ending drama ok:sweatingbullets:

Also, if anyone wondering about the Chinese version of Mr Queen which is "Go Princess Go",

https://mydramalist.com/16159-go-princess-go You can watch it on the links below.

But before watching, I want to remind you that this drama is ridiculous and nonsense. I like it because it is silly in funny way. So don't be serious or thinking too much when watching this version if you want to enjoy it.

Whoaa @enzek  I am impressed !    Thanks for the list.  I like to watch Chinese historical dramas - just that they are soooooo long.   And their movements , whatever you call that .. are so graceful.   The costumes or robes are simply FABULOUS.

Welcome.

Yes their costumes are fabulous and sometimes their women have the anti gravity hairstyles but I'm addicted to them haha

I really want a romance between them. It is fine even their romance is slow burn because I'm already used to reading slow burn romance novels LOL

Mr. Queen: Episodes 3-4 Open Thread

by missvictrix

Queen0304_1.jpg

As our hero in a queen’s body gets drawn into court politics and the mystery around the lake incident, he’s slowly able to piece together the queen’s story. There’s a lot of details to fill in, but what we learn this week sheds light on some of the queen’s political and emotional conflicts.

EPISODES 3-4 WEECAP

So-yong’s drunken escapades at the gisaeng house put her in quite a dangerous position, and one second she’s stumbling back to the palace, and the next she’s being attacked by a masked assailant… who’s actually her husband, King Cheoljong. Another hero swoops in to save her, though, and we enjoy one of many well-choreographed, swashbuckling fight scenes.

Who’s this other guy that saves her, though (and knows she’s So-young and not some young rapscallion?) He’s KIM BYUNG-IN (Na In-woo), So-yong’s cousin. We’ve seen him in bits so far, but it’s this week’s episodes where he becomes important — and also kinda sexy?

A flashback brings us to a night before the lake incident, and for the first time we see the real So-yong. She’s absolutely distraught when Byung-in finds her. He attempts to console her and quiet her doubts… but this actually turns into a swoony confession of love, and a kiss, too. Hah, way to sneak a secret romance in there, Show! I actually really like this dynamic between these two, and now I’m looking forward to Byung-in’s role as he continues to help and protect So-yong.

Thank you @enzek for the Eng Sub BTS -  the casts and crew are so warm-y on the set - that's nice to see.

The King often stares at his Queen in bewilderment because he can't fathom why she does this or that or says this or that :D  because of the smart, handsome male chef in her body.
