Shin Hye Sun is in talks to star in a new tvN drama!

On March 17, News1 reported that Shin Hye Sun had received the offer to star as the female lead for the upcoming tvN drama “Queen Cheorin” (literal title).

Following the reports, Shin Hye Sun’s agency YNK Entertainment commented, “Shin Hye Sun has received the offer to star as the female lead Kim So Yong for ‘Queen Cheorin,’ and she is positively reviewing the offer.”

With Joseon Dynasty as the background, “Queen Cheorin” will be a bright and comedic fusion sageuk (Korean historical drama). The drama will be written by scriptwriter Park Gye Ok who wrote “Doctor Prisoner” and “Inspiring Generation,” and it will be helmed by PD (producing director) Yoon Sung Shik who directed “Hwarang” and “Tower of Babel.”

“Queen Cheorin” will be about Bong Hwan, a man living in modern times whose soul gets trapped in the body of a queen from the Joseon Dynasty. The drama will tell the story from a refreshing perspective while showcasing a new type of genre as it takes on the fight against gender stereotypes.

Shin Hye-sun considers becoming a queen for tvN fusion sageuk

by tineybeanie

shineheesun1.jpg

Actress Shin Hye-sun (Angel’s Last Mission: Love) is positively considering a new project. It’s a tvN fusion sageuk called Queen Cheorin, after the wife of the illiterate King Cheoljong. According to her agency, Shin Hye-sun has received an offer to play the main character, Kim So-yong, and is currently in negotiation talks, although nothing has been confirmed.

Written by Park Gye-ok (Doctor Prisoner, Inspiring Generation) and directed by Yoon Sung-shik (Babel, Hwarang), Queen Cheorin is a sexy comedy taking place in the Joseon era, when strict rules about men and women were enforced as the social norm. I’m excited to see what Shin Hye-sun does with this drama because she does comedy really well, and I can’t wait to see all the preeetty fusion sageuk dresses.

No other information on the drama has been released, but here are a few notes on the historical figure Queen Cheorin. When King Heonjong died without an heir, the rival Jo clan and Kim clan scrambled to find a weak-willed puppet to put on the throne. They found Cheoljong, who was a distant cousin from a branch of the royal family that had been sentenced to exile and lived in poverty. Kim Jung Hyun and Shin Hye Sun may be meeting in a new drama!

On April 8, an industry representative reported, “Kim Jung Hyun will be starring as a lead for the tvN drama ‘Queen Cheorin’ (literal title).”

In response to the report, the actor’s agency O& Entertainment commented, “Kim Jung Hyun received an offer for a leading role in ‘Queen Cheorin’ and is reviewing it.”

“Queen Cheorin” will be about a man living in modern times whose soul gets trapped in the body of a queen from the Joseon Dynasty. The drama will tell the story from a refreshing perspective while showcasing a new type of genre as it takes on the fight against gender stereotypes.

It was previously revealed that Shin Hye Sun is in talks to play Kim So Yong, the queen who has a man’s soul trapped in her body. Kim Jung Hyun has received the offer to play Cheol Jong, a king described as the “Jekyll and Hyde” of the Joseon Dynasty. He can appear to be a naive and easily manipulated person on the outside, but he also bears psychopathic qualities.

Actress Bae Jong-ok reunites with Shin Hye-sun in Queen Cheorin

1580967115245_1_085749.jpg

On the 3rd, as a result of the coverage of Joy News 24, Bae Jong-ok decided to appear on the new drama'Chun In-cheol' (directed Yoon Sung-shik, drama Park Gye-ok) scheduled to be broadcast on tvN and is adjusting details.

'Queen of Iron Man' is a fusion historical drama that captures the incident of the soul of a man who lived in the modern world, trapped inside the body of a woman's middle war. He was born again as Queen Cheol-in and is riding a roller coaster of rising status with Cinderella Man Cheoljong, the representative of the Joseon Dynasty. Against the backdrop of the Joseon Dynasty, which was strict about sex, it is expected to convey differentiation to a fresh genre that could not be easily seen in dramas. (Google translate)

The soul of a man from modern time trapped in the body of a queen from the Joseon Dynasty can bring a lot of laughter but I am curious how this drama will end. The soul will remain in the woman`s body?

Nice to see Bae Jong-ok again. The last time I saw her in drama Live.

Shin Hye-Sun & Kim Jung-Hyun cast in tvN drama series “Queen Cheorin”

Queen_Cheorin-a00.jpg

Shin Hye-Sun and Kim Jung-Hyun are cast for lead roles in tvN drama series “Queen Cheorin” (literal title). Bae Jong-Ok and Kim Tae-Woo are also cast for major supporting characters. The drama series is a period-comedy, but with a major twist. The twist is that a man in the present day’s spirit somehow takes over the body of Queen Kim So-Yong (played by Shin Hye-Sun) in the Joseon era. Kim Jung-Hyun will play King Cheoljong.

Plot Synopsis by AsianWiki: In the present day, Jang Bong-Hwan works as a chef at the President’s Blue House. He has a free spirit, but his spirit somehow finds its way into the body of Queen Kim So-Yong (Shin Hye-Sun) in the Joseon period.

King Cheoljong (Kim Jung-Hyun) has secrets. He seems like a figurehead, who is gentle and easygoing. In fact, he hides his strong aspects. Queen Sunwon (Bae Jong-Ok) is the late King Sunjo’s wife. She wields the true power in the country and, thus, relegates King Cheoljong as just a figurehead. Kim Jwa-Geun (Kim Tae-Woo) is Queen Sunwon’s younger brother. He is extremely ambitious.

“Queen Cheorin” does not currently have an air date, but it will be broadcast on tvN.

Thanks for making this thread. I'm so excited for this drama. This pairing is my dream pairing. This line-up is so amazing. Can't wait.

I wonder how they will play out the romance part? A man's spirit now is supposed to be in the queen, right? How can the queen (he) is in romance with the king, as long as it is not a BL story. I'm a little confused.

While I watched the original Chinese version of this drama, I never had feeling that this is BL story because.

1) From the outside appearance and dresses, the main characters are a beautiful woman and a handsome man ,  not two men. So at least audience will not see the two good looking guys interacted with each other.  :D

2) Even though the queen/princess has the soul of a man, but with her traditional dress and royal customs, most of time she had to act like a woman to disguise her true self. Sometime she might talk fierce or had some awkward manners but she's not masculine or a warrior type.   In modern time, he/she was more like a playboy, who was funny and enjoy eating, not a macho man.  So when he became a queen he had to learn to behave in Joseon era , and the important thing is that the king didn't know the queen has the male soul inside, he always saw her as a woman.  That gave a feeling more like a guy in love with a tomboy girl who gradually changed into a woman.

3) At first the king/prince and queen/princess hated each other but with some situations they've been through, both starting to see the good side of each other.  The point that emphasized in the original version is that the way the queen became to realized that it doesn't matter about her past gender conflict but to accept her new identity as a woman and to live happily.  (spoiler)

Spoiler

So at the end she completely became a woman inside and outside.

Those above are based from the original version, I don't know how much the Korean version will be different.  The news article also said that the drama is trying to tell the refreshing persepective and fight against gender sterotype.  In terms of a drama character in Joseon era, this is quite a challenge to overcome the conflict of time and gender swap.  And also quite a challenge for audiences in year 2020 too to watch the drama with opened-mind , to focus more on true heart/identity and to look beyond the sterotype.

Personally I don't think this Korean version will be too extreme on this gender issue or have many sexy scenes like in original version because it will be aired on tvN and internationally, it's not like the original version which was aired on internet channel. An also the writer-nim is well-known for his quality work.  So I expect to see a good mix between the gender conflict, comedy and historical/serious story in this Korean version.

Very well said! But, It is not a remake of Princess Go Go. Perhaps it may be also be a different plot with just a similar base story.

Well, if they follow the original story of Go Princess Go, the Queen character with man's spirit  should eventually accept the fact that he is now a female and he decide to live as a female. So, no, it's not BL as the Princess character basically "let go" of his previous male identity  and accept her female identity.  I guess if anything, you could say that the story is a transgender love story of a man becoming a woman. Of course audience never see this Queen character physically as a man, only have a woman's body, so to audience it will look like a  regular heterosexual woman and man interactions. And I think in the original the Prince never know that the Princess spirit is a man, so he always just thinking he is falling in love with and kissing and having sex with his female wife.  If they follow original plotline of Go Princess Go, then we will see the Queen character start to fall in love with King character and at first have internal monologues about "OMG, I'm starting to fall for my husband...but I'm a man...but I'm also a woman...what am I?"  Then finally accept that while in the past they were male, now they are female and they will live as a female . They also come to realization that love is love regardless so male or female doesn't matter, and they not going to worry about it so much and just accept their feelings and their attraction.

It will be interesting to see how this Korean version handles the sexual aspects of the story. In GPG, when the man spirit first arrive in the female body he is always chasing the palace maids and trying to kiss them, etc. so there were hints of lesbian love scenes. And the original drama have bed scenes too.

Thanks you so much for your explanation. I used to watch some dramas with BL theme mostly from Thailand, and China. I love them. But, in Korea, I doubt they openly accept BL or Lesbian story in dramas or movies. There is a short BL Korean drama currently airing ( I forgot the drama name).

Still, Korean viewers and K-netizens probably would make a lot of noises and criticism obviously. I hope everything works out well for this drama since I am a huge fan of both leads.

Moreover, Kim Jung Hyun needs now a solid drama to resume his male lead status again after his outstanding performance in cloy.

Sure, no problem. I think this drama seem inspired by C Drama Go Princess Go but of course it is not a direct remake so it will be interesting to see how they handle the ideas in this Korea version. South Korea is not very open to LGBTQ  themes in the television dramas, it is true. This drama will be on cable TV so we might see some more serious exploration and explicit content, we will have to wait and see.

The publicity materials are rather vague about the sexual and gender politics of the drama. I am thinking the drama may focus more on just the gender politics of how women were repressed by the patriarchy in Joseon times, trapped in very strict roles and rules and not even try to explore any sexual politics. Of course modern day people, both men and women, would rebel against the restrictions. So we probably going to get a lot of "fish out of water" type comedy as the modern day man spirit try to figure out the Joseon palace and how to act like a proper lady and he probably not like the restrictions on women as well. Perhaps they will not even have any loveline between the  Man Spirit trapped in Queen and the King. Who knows.

Anyway, I am like you and hope that the script is good quality and interesting and that the drama will be good and well received as I like the cast as well.
