[Taiwanese Drama 2020] Lost Romance 浪漫輸給你

Hope you've all watched the episode by now because I can't get the spoiler tag to work (we're also pretty close to the release of Episode 7 anyway)

Things I liked about Episode 6: Xiao En and Qing Feng were pretty comical at the hotel when they were trying to spy on Aoran. And I laughed the whole time when she found him in the hot tub and then when they get the room together and she's like, we'll just sleep on the bed like comrades. Poor Qing Feng, haha. Qing Feng's innocent smile at the hotel staff and then glare at Xiao En was pretty funny.

I'm finding both the progression of Aoran + Xiao En and Qing Feng + Xiao En to be moving along really well this episode. Aoran finally starts associating everything to Xiao En, so at least I don't feel so bored watching the Aoran/ Chu chu scenes. I laughed at the confession that Xiao En shouted out at Aoran and then her reason for liking him being Money :joy: I hope the story line and comical pace is kept like this episode - looking forward to the next one soon!

I have a question. Is this drama based on some novel/or comic book? Because it does seem like a comic plotline.

I am not new to Taiwanese dramas but so far this is the first ongoing drama I am watching and the wait is killing me.

Like  the show will go on till October and only one episode per week.

I think this is an original drama by the screenwriters but that they made use of the comic book tropes here so it seems like it was based on a novel/ comic book plotline. That and throw in all the romance tropes they can possibly insert and voila! hahaha, Romance Trope Drama on steroids!

:fullofhearts:

I'm loving the way they portray it here though, its self deprecating enough and doesn't take itself too seriously so you can enjoy the hijinks the caharacters get into and how they get themselves out of it.

Totally agree on the wait time... 1 episode a week is killing me too! Though from the previews, it looks like episode 8 is the turning point for Aoran. Sunday can't get here fast enough!

:crybaby:

@cheekychipmunk_stv I was thinking: what if QingFeng is the author of the comic book that's why he doesn't "appear" in the real world? At least not yet, but here's to hoping he will. Hahaha, just a thought...

 :idk:

@Ayame Haha, I usually wait for the subs, but because I saw the holding pic for that episode 8 preview you put on this thread, I watched episode 7 raw just so I could watch the preview. Won't put any spoilers yet, but my god. Qing Feng is so much more observant and considerate of Xiao En. Watching episode 7, I felt impatient with Aoran's slowness to understand her....QF is the better choice in my opinion...and that Episode 8 preview is killing me!!

@Anjali Punia It's an original story as far as I know - Taiwanese dramas often have slapstick comedy element to them. I think they just enjoy that type of humour culturally. The slowburn of one episode per week has it's good points too - The silver linings are: You get more promotional & behind the scenes content (Taiwanese actors tend to do more interviews/ fan meets/ social media for their dramas than Korean actors), you have something to look forward to weekly until October & probably healthier not binge-watching 20 episodes of something, haha!

@Yseia Romance tropes on steroids is right! I think that's why QF is such a second lead syndrome inducing character - it's such a big part of the romance drama trope to have a strong love triangle!

Yes, I've watched it already @Feby Valentiya. You can watch it on Vidol raw - you'll need to log in with Facebook. But yeah, no subtitles.

I also do the same . Subs on Viki don't get updated till Wednesday. Even the raw comes out at Wednesday morning and subs late at night or on Thursday.

So I usually watch the raw on vidol app.

And then the subbed version.

Marcus Chang all the way.

Lol when he did the show Between/sandwich girl I used to get so shy watching him on screen I used to close my eyes . Now I can't get enough of him

Yeah, he's so much better for her! It's nice to see him step up and be her knight in shining armor but at the same time, the frustrations are starting to build coz you know he's already displaying classic 2nd ML characteristics so much, based on the preview. I'm hoping for more cutesy Xiao En and Qing Feng interactions before the angst and jealousy kick in and/ or he gets relegated to the side again.

I really like how Xiao En and Qing Feng's relationship evolved here. It's like QF who is so used to being in the background was suddenly thrust in the spotlight and that person who "saw" him was Xiao En (we all know it's coz they're both the 2nd Leads then), but now that he's in the game, he's stepping up from being a shadow/ silent support to fully embracing his role as Xiao En's friend/ protector as well.

Spoiler

My Fave Scene from Ep.7 was when Xiao En was back at work and the "boss walk" happens and Aoran doesn't see Xiao En at all as he walks past, however Qingfeng does and gives a small smile as well...

I usually watch raw on dramacool but until today they not yet upload it.

Preview for ep 8 contain mixed feeling, I feel betrayed when saw Aoran go to date with Chuchu and smile from ear to ear.

We need another lovely scene between Xiaoen and Aoran!! 'Holding hands' not enough for me :)

@songielove Ooh, makes sense that Mader funda is the official design work for Lost Romance. But I have to admit Taiwanese drama marketing always confuses me. They usually invest in some great magazine shoots or videos, but then sometimes they don't link it to the official channels - like Sanli has used very little of the Mader Funda marketing on their social media. Weird! It's interesting to hear about how other people watch dramas - it's great that you catch things before the spoilers! I pretty much watch as soon as it's subbed, so there's a good amount of comments, but not overwhelming - it's fun because usually people have similar opinions or good theories and it gives a sense of community. I do turn it off if there's too many comments or if they are not nice/interesting. I've never been much of a recap person - I always wondered why people read them, but it makes more sense when you mention reading after watching raws!

There's been so much discussion, how exciting! It is confusing as there are production houses and sub-specialists that may or may not be independent. I think what's true is that they contribute more than what we see. I think it would be too much for Sanlih to mention all the affiliates, but it would make perfect sense if Enjoy Entertainment and Mader Funda mentions Sanlih, for example. What I really appreciate about Taiwan dramas, and this goes with the one-episode-per-week argument (for lack of better word) is that they usually are very thoughtful and not lazy when it comes to content. There is a lot of meat in the stills and opening/ending reels, lots of print and video interviews (Marcus did a whole bunch the last two weeks), the behind-the-scenes are all organized and cohesive, and if lucky, there are some fan meetings held in between (one just announced this week). May be old age, but I prefer the schedule this way so that I can appreciate the work and let it sink in throughout the week. Sometimes it gets overwhelming having to play catch-up. A lot can and does happen within an hour. Plus, I'm not good at multitasking, so another reason I prefer watching the raw first. It's especially crucial with Lost Romance because I really enjoy watching both Marcus and Vivian's acting. They're so natural together, I don't want to miss a beat! Actually, I don't read recaps. Although I think writers do recaps mainly for the purpose of filling in viewers. The reviews and recaps I was referring to are simply the ones I know will show on my social media timeline. Some fans will share their thoughts on the episode and I don't want to be spoiled, so it's safer to watch the raw first. Sorry for the confusion. :sweatingbullets:

Welcome, everyone! I'm loving all the discussion and theories. Going to wait on discussing Ep07. :tears:

That's awesome, @Yseia! QF being the writer is one explanation for his significant presence in the novel, but not in real life.

Spoiler

Which reminds me, how much time has actually passed in real life? I'm curious as to when it would be ok for Xiao En to wake up, but I also feel that that may be dependent on CEO.. which makes me wary about timeline. It looks like she's wanting to get out in Ep08, but we all know she won't be able to. Those previews are so sad (Vivian's crying is always so heartbreaking to me). :bawling:

About QF's flames in Ep06... if I remember right, during the PR rounds of interviews, someone described the book characters as mere characters, simply following their role with no questions, no feelings. This is what you'd expect of them in these romantic comic books; they don't digress from the words on paper. Which leads me to think that when QF sees before him the devastation and sadness in Xiao En, and how much she hurts for Aoran despite him continuously misunderstanding her, his character is moved to ignite (perhaps burning the words/pages?). As in, possessing depth and feelings. I think Ep08 will show how he begins to explore and act on these inner feelings [of love]-- something not written for him nor second leads... Aoran is still in character and has yet to cross the threshold to having deeper feelings than what he's meant to have. Even for Chuchu, his feelings are on the surface. Just thinking out loud. The only way we can be sure of our guess is to see those flames again!

Awww, I still do that with Behind Your Smile. My all-time favorite drama! I thought I was beginning to be a minority here, I've yet to jump ship to QF, although he's obviously the better man. Marcus all the way haha! But why not both?

@Yseia Oh Qing Feng. He's totally playing the knight role and he really has Xiao En's back and sees the best in her. I also agree with your spoiler tag scene - it was sweet that he noticed her. I really like that he kicks Aoran to his senses in episode 7 too (Haha, and like a good friend he looked so smug about it too!) But yeh, on the other hand, he's such a second lead and I can't help thinking...stop talking her up to Aoran and save her for yourself!! Hopefully there will be some more cute moments before he gets overlooked. I don't know about jealousy, but I feel like he's the character that will be the shoulder to cry on...and then be tossed to the side because Xiao En doesn't feel that way about him :(

@songielove I totally agree with you on the thoughtfulness of drama industry marketing in producing a lot of additional content in Taiwan. It would be better if everything was linked, for sure to reduce confusion - I guess there is a sort of enjoyment though in suddenly discovering a new source of content! And I very much agree with you on the benefits of one episode per week. I'm also watching a Korean drama currently and I find myself much more involved in Lost Romance because the Korean schedule of 2 episodes per week makes it hard for me to catch up and there's no room for reflection. There's also more additional fun content for Lost Romance, both from the official media houses, but also the actors themselves. Due to the intensity of their fans, I also find Korean actors to be very guarded outside of their work on social media - The best thing about Taiwanese dramas is that the fans are more chill, so actors are not afraid to joke around and offer fan service on their social media accounts (e.g Marcus & Vivian posting pretty pics of them hugging) Ah, I see what you mean by recaps - just general spoilers on social media! Haha, I know you're a huge Marcus fan so I doubt you'll be swept into the Qing Feng camp any time soon :PThat's really interesting about the characters just going through the motions - It reminds me of what Simon said in an interview about his character not really having a soul (but I think he meant, not having a consciousness about his life). It's interesting how Xiao En is changing that, being the trigger to make Qing Feng act differently. I wonder what it means for the physical story book that is changing in the outside world?!

For those who have watched Episode 7 and want the translations for the Behind the Scenes, I've done a very limited translation of the Vivian+ Marcus, Simon parts of the video I enjoyed. I am still working on Episode 6 BTS, so will post that one too when I'm done.

@songielove & @Anjali Punia Hahahaha, yes! Marcus all the way but Simon is slowly pulling me from that ship.... nooooo!!! so i vote yes to why not both! lelz :joy:

@songielove I like your flames = awareness interpretation, makes sense actually, hopefully they do show up again for Aoran when he realizes Chuchu is not his own choice but she was chosen for him.

@JenL Right? QF forever the voice of practicality for everyone. I think being tossed aside would be even sadder in this case... :tears:

I'm actually wanting more bromance and interactive scenes between Marcus and Simon aside from the usual "explain this weirdo to me" that usually happens on screen. The BTS cuts and other fun contents do assuage that somewhat, but it'd be great if they show it on reel too. I'd like to see how their friendship began or how Qingfeng knows about Aoran's painful history... a little flashback or back story would be nice is all... Haha, just a little wishful thinking since I know this was pre-produced and filming's done already but here's to hoping *fingers crossed* :Please:

I do like Simon but you see Marcus Chang is the only one has had me infatuated with him so bad. Since back to 1989

I have watched so many dramas and have never been so smitten with any other actor like him.

But honestly Simon is also very good. Plus the second male lead syndrome is too real in this drama. Even if he doesn't get Xiao En I do hope They have enough hugs/ intimate setting scenes and I am the one of those people who is madly hoping he exists in real world too.

Aoran is too slow witted. I like the fact that he is slowly relating everything to xiao en.

Plus I am wondering if the step brother and sister exist in novel world.

The plot line has all romantic clichés but the drama is so far much more interesting and engrossing than Korean dramas.

I have been putting off watching Behind your smile because I have heard it's an emotional roller coaster.

@JenL I agree. I also see how the different fandom cultures play a big part in how one can really enjoy the drama, in and outside the show. It really is much more fun when the actors are free to call each other hubby and wifey outside the show. :joy: Speaking of which, thank you in advance for your BTS translations, they're hard work! I will read them later today. I thought it was a hilarious twist when

Spoiler

Xiao En and Chuchu kissed! Not Xiao En and Aoran, not Xiao En and Qing Feng, not Aoran and Chuchu, not even Aoran and Qing Feng (this is a real CP for some!)-- but the one ship in this quadruple love that no one shipped. Such a funny twist that caused chaos in Aoran's little mind, and forever changed the direction in the novel.

I second this. I actually think who I'm shipping is Marcus + Simon rather than Aoran + Qing Feng. I would like to see their history, but I keep forgetting that we're deep in the novel and wonder if that would later on give us some clue to the history of the He family. I'm trying to keep in mind how the information given to us (and not given) in the novel can tell us about Tian Xing. I think what's fun about Lost Romance is that it's playing on cliches we're used to, but the bigger picture is still so unpredictable. Using what we know of character tropes, it keeps us guessing and, yet, has managed to surprise us. The drama is still filming and not everything is set in place, so I'm hoping this love rivalry only equals more bromance (Xiao En and Chuchu duo is refreshing too)! I know we're not the only ones rooting for them haha.

A translated snippet of Ep07 from Sanlih.

Spoiler

I understand not all dramas are for everyone, but maybe just not at the time. Give BYS a try when you're ready. If it's anything I've learned from my old age of watching dramas, it's that timing is just as important when meeting the right drama. BYS still leaves me breathless... (Shameless plug, but talking about actors in Taiwan vs Korea above, Marcus and Eugenie still call each other by their characters' names even today. )

 @songielove Off-topic & Unpopular Opinion:

Spoiler

Oh God, I couldn't stand Eugenie Liu's acting in BYS, the drama and ensemble was great but her portrayal of the quintessential Cinderella/ wide-eyed ingenue had me rolling my eyes so hard. (I'm so sorry to her fans *peace sign*) Nobody is that wide-eyed all the time or that naive... Maybe because it was one of her earlier projects? But she was a hard no for me in that drama.

I know the character was written that way and she had to bring that character to life but yeah... as I said, unpopular opinion
