Park Hae-soo, Lee Jung-jae

The drama Squid Game has recently cast Lee Jung-jae (Chief of Staff) and Park Hae-soo (Smart Prison Living) as its two leads. The title Squid Game refers to a traditional children’s game of tag involving an offense team, a defense team, and boundaries drawn in the shape of a squid. The story of the drama is centered around a mysterious winner-takes-all survival game with the ultimate prize of 45.6 billion won. It will be interesting to see how the survival game relates to the original children’s game.

Lee Jung-jae plays an ordinary company employee whose life hits rock bottom when restructuring at his company edges him out. When he hears about this secretive survival game and the astronomical prize-winning money, he jumps onboard.

Meanwhile, Park Hae-soo plays a neighborhood dongsaeng who grew up with Lee Jung-jae. Through his efforts alone, he rose above his impoverished background to graduate from Seoul National University. However, he’s caught embezzling company funds, and his livelihood becomes endangered. As a result, he also decides to join the survival game.

Netflix drama Squid Game, directed and written by Hwang Dong-hyuk (Miss Granny), will be released sometime later this year.

The cast is shaping nice so far. I had a feeling that this drama will be male centric (with many male actors on the cast members like many kmovies) but I hope there will be interesting parts for actresses as well.

The drama seems to have another name, Round Six. Probably, the English name.

NETFLIX CONFIRMS CASTING OF LEE JUNG-JAE AND PARK HAE-SOO FOR NEW ORIGINAL SERIES ROUND SIX

Popular Korean actors Lee Jung-jae and Park Hae-soo have been confirmed for lead roles in a new Netflix original series, Round Six.

SEOUL, March 11, 2020 - Netflix Inc., the world’s leading streaming entertainment service, announced that the casting of Lee Jung-jae and Park Hae-soo in lead roles has been confirmed for Round Six, an original series to be directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, whose other works include The Fortress, Miss Granny and Silenced.

Round Six depicts a story of people who decide to become the players of a mysterious survival game that has a whopping 40-million-dollar prize at stake. Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, seems defeated by life after being fired from his job. He decides to join the survival game to win prize money. Sang-woo, played by Park Hae-soo, is Gi-hun’s childhood friend and he also joins the game as he gets in trouble at work despite all the hard work he has done to be where he is at now.

Lee Jung-jae is one of Korea’s most well-known film and television actors. He has performed in such popular films and TV dramas as Along with the Gods series, Assassination, The Thieves, Svaha: The Sixth Finger, New World and Chief of Staff.

Park Hae-soo who made a name for himself in Prison Playbook, is also well known for his recent film Time to Hunt and the Netflix original anthology series Persona.

The literal translation of Round Six’s Korean title is ‘Squid Game’ (오징어 게임), which is the street game Gi-hun and Sang-woo played together when they were young. It’s quite a physical game that only ends when there’s a final winner, much like the survival game they play now. It’s named as such because players are to draw different geometric shapes on the ground, which, as a whole, look like a squid.

Round Six will premiere globally, only on Netflix.

'Sea of Calm' 'Squid Game'... Netflix's blockbuster releases

108400076.2.jpg

Thanks to the global popularity of Korean dramas, in the second half of this year, each OTT (Online Video Streaming Service) will increase the content size with a large investment and release original series one after another. It is a strategy to attract attention by investing huge production costs and presenting top stars with high prices and fresh materials that have not been seen in small screens. In particular, following the success of the 'Kingdom' series, which combines zombies and historical dramas, the recently released prequel 'Kingdom: Ashinjeon', etc.

Netflix took the lead. Netflix will invest 550 billion won this year to release original movies and dramas. A lot of top star actors are also coming out.

A typical example is 'Sea of Silence', starring Gong Yoo and Bae Doo-na and produced by Jung Woo-sung. It tells the story of crew members who go to a research base abandoned on the moon in a future earth ravaged by the depletion of essential resources to recover a mysterious sample. It will be released at the end of this year.

'Squid Game' starring Lee Jung-jae is also highly anticipated. This 8-episode drama deals with the events of those who are suddenly invited to a mysterious game about a game with a prize of 45.6 billion won. Director Hwang Dong-hyeok, who directed the films 'Namhansanseong', 'Suspicious Woman', and 'The Crucible', will direct.

Domestic OTT Teabing is also focusing on the original series. Following 'Come to the Witch's Restaurant' featuring Song Ji-hyo and Nam Ji-hyun, dramas such as 'I'm Watching', which will be released on August 26, and 'Drinker City Women', which will be released in the second half of the year, will be produced and released. Seo Kang-jun and Kim Ah-joong's 'Grid' and Kang Daniel's 'You and My Police Class' are said to be ambitious works by Disney Plus, which is preparing for a Korean service in the second half of this year.

How did people of various ages, occupations, and stories come to participate in the game, and the curiosity of who is hosting this huge game deepens. In addition, the vivid colors and emotional spaces and the strong contrast created by the participants' father Gyu-hwan make the audience look forward to the different visuals and stories that 'Squid Game' will present.

At the same time as the production announcement, 'Squid Game' drew a lot of attention with its unconventional title and material, huge scale, and trusted production crew and actors. This teaser for Squid Game looks so intense! Starring Lee Jung-jae (Chief of Staff 2) and Park Hae-soo (Smart Prison Living), Squid Game is an upcoming Netflix drama about a survival contest amongst 456 participants to win 45.6 billion won (approximately 40 million USD).

The drama is a creative commentary on the ruthless workplace competition of today’s society portrayed through the lens of a nostalgic children’s game. The poster above reads, “45.6 billion won, the harmony of adults will be destroyed,” as a pink-uniformed individual forcefully drags a bleeding contestant to a ribboned coffin. The circle, triangle, and square lines symbolize the shape of a squid.

456 desperate contestants of different ages, occupations, and backgrounds are gathered to play one game a day, until there’s only one person left standing. The penalty for losing a game is to lose one’s life.Other actors in this drama include: Oh Young-soo (Chocolate), Wie Ha-joon (Eighteen Again), Jung Ho-yeon, Heo Sung-tae (Racket Boys), Anupam, and Kim Joo-ryung (The School Nurse Files).

In the teaser, a golden masked figure welcomes the contestants. A troop of pink hooded figures with triangle and square shapes on their masks fill an underground room. The display shows the 456 players of the survival game. A man walks on a digital floor that shows each of the players labeled by a number (potentially their current scores). An army of pink hooded figures sit in front of computers, calculating aspects of the game.

The contestants, all dressed in the same green tracksuit, move through a cartoonishly bright landscape. The first game seems to be tug-of-war with five minutes on the clock. The contestants line up in an orderly fashion as pink hooded figures supervise once more in an adult-sized playground. One woman pounds her bloodied fists on a steel door that won’t open. The number of players decreases to fewer than 277.

In a scene that looks to be a huge indoor field with fake landscapes painted on the walls, all the contestants are gathered to one side, except for the ones that are strewn on the ground, presumably dead. The announcer says: “If you do not want to participate in the game, please let us know now.”

A woman screams as the person in front of her is shot, spraying blood into her face. The contestants begin to crowd the door, with not many seconds left on the clock. Glass shatters, and someone falls through. Woman No. 67 looks extremely determined as she dashes ahead of her competitors.

We see that the game of tug-of-war results in one team’s plunge to death. Back on the field, competitors run as they dodge the bullets being aimed at them. A short cut of Lee Jung-jae is shown as the clock counts down to “00:00.” The last scene shows the golden masked figure again as an announcer says: “Let the games begin.”

Netflix’s upcoming series “Squid Game” has released a new trailer!

“Squid Game” is a new drama about a mysterious survival game with a reward of 45.6 billion won (about $40 million). Lee Jung Jae and Park Hae Soo star as two childhood friends who wind up joining the game—only to learn that there’s much more at stake than just the prize money.

The trailer begins with a group of people dressed in the same green tracksuits, like a prison or a school. Mysterious figures in red tracksuits and masks explain that everyone in the room is desperate and has no hope of paying their debts back and getting their lives on track. They will now participate in a game that can make them rich beyond their dreams.

The participants enter a strange facility where they are led around by the masked people and their information stored in computers. To ensure “fairness,” none of the participants are told what the games will be in advance. The participants are then led out on a field where a giant robot plays a children’s game that involves a group of people running up to one person who has their back to the crowd and trying to tag them before they turn around. If the person turns around, the other contestants must remain frozen in place or be tagged out. The participants are baffled at the childishness of the game until it is discovered that the people who are “out” are brutally killed.

As expected, the participants try to escape the facility as a robotic voice proclaims, “This is just a game. As long as you follow the rules, you can leave this place with the prize money.” Ominously, the voice adds that no player can stop playing the game, and that those who refuse to play will be “eliminated.” At the end, Lee Jung Jae screams, “A person has just been killed!” to the cameras as a group of faceless people watch the deadly game.
