[Drama 2020] Convenience Store Saet Byul / Backstreet Rookie, 편의점 샛별이

Recommended Posts

@ailanthus

Yes I saw that on naver knetz are searching the meaning of  giving tulips flower or red tulips.  Why do they change the BGM on SBS and IQIYI.  On SBS IG, viewers are asking for a kiss (such high demand in the history of kdrama).  Someone even refer to PDmin Lee as Rebecca Pdmin....lol.

BTS for ep 12 from Lifetime (shorter version and some different cuts)

I just finish rewatching this episode again and I learned new things that I missed earlier.  So it's said that the girls mother died and his dad raised the two girls by himself.  So may be Jangmi is a side story for DH's parents.

Now I have a feeling that the kiss will happen on the rooftop.  It's a hiding place and a special place for SB and her sister which DH didn't know.  We now see that  he brought her there.  It looks like he has set up something special.  He said he missed her and has something to tell her HERE. It's a perfect place WITHOUT ANY INTERRUPTION.

Notice the heavy kick bag positioned in plain sight.  I think the Special Hiding Place is the rooftop of their dad's old dojo *or* the dojo is still operating with a new owner with the girls having visiting rights.  Could it be that rumoured cameo by Kim Bo-young?  Hmmmm...

Good Morning, everyone! :D

Had to make myself a coffee first because this was me just now when I woke up:

tenor.gif

(for those who don't know my spirit animal is a bunny.)

I'm weirdly okay with the ratings. Yes, I'd like them to rise again but I also think knetz are waiting eagerly for the kiss to happen. And here we're in episode 13 and we're still wearing our clown outfits. Let's hope we can take off the clown mask after episode 14, @ailanthus and @Ming Lim.

I have high expectations for episode 14. Since they now built it so nicely. I still think the pacing wasn't that great with Yeon Joo breakup but I'm still happy with our couple because I feel like their foundation is stronger as we see Dae Hyun being more serious about telling Yeon Joo he doesn't want to give Saet Byul the wrong idea. He was never like that with Yeon Joo. He tried so hard to set a boundary between them but in the end it never really worked out. So I liked that a lot about Dae Hyun. He was so very clear to me when it comes to Saet Byul. :D

@ailanthus

The scene was sure extra and I laughed so much when Saet Byul said in her mind "it would've been so nice".

:loolz:

Dae Hyun mom, they just want to kiss! I wonder who will interrupt them now in episode 14 because we sure won't get a tulip kiss, right?

I'm a bit anxious about the rooftop scene/date. I hope the preview isn't tricking us or anything. We need all the fluffly moments. And I'm okay with a rooftop kiss (ANY kiss really) at this point of the drama.

Here is the article for tomorrow.

[xportsnews] Backstreet Rookie made viewers sleepless with its exciting ending.
The scene of Choi Dae-hyun gives a bouquet of flowers to Jung Saet Byul, amplified curiosity about the next story.

In the 13th episode, Choi Dae-hyun and Jung Saet Byul built their faith and showed them getting closer. Choi Dae-hyun was not swayed by everyone's misunderstanding of Jung Saet Byul but rather comforted by supporting Jung Sae-byeol. Viewers are cheering for the two people who share their hearts, eager to become a couple.

Among them, the 14th episode of "Backstreet Rookie," depicts Choi Dae-hyun holding a special event at a special place for Jung Saet Byul The romantic atmosphere, such as the rooftop with a view of the night sky and the candles on the table, is causing excitement.

In the photo released, Jung Saet Byul smiles brightly at the event prepared by Choi Dae-hyun. Choi Dae-hyun, who sees Jung Saet Byul likes him, is also smiling brightly, creating a warm atmosphere. Then, Choi Dae-hyun's serious look at Jung Saet Byul and the tearful Jung Saet Byul make us even more curious about the situation. What did Choi Dae-hyun say to Jung Saet Byul while preparing the special event and gifts?

In the 14th preview video released earlier, Choi Dae-hyun collapsed from overwork and Yoo Yeon-joo advised Jung Saet Byul to "think about what is the best for Dae-hyun." On the same day, Dar-hyun will have to choose between Shinseong branch in Jongno and advisory committee at the headquarters. The situation that separates Choi Dae-hyun from Jung Saet Byul will create tension.
It makes us all looking forward for the 14th episode, which will air tonight on August 1 at 10 PM KST

I'm looking forward to Saet Byul taking care of Dae Hyun's sister. Might she be the reason why Dae Hyun overworked again? :o It's gonna be interesting. And how "nice" of Yeon Joo to put the responsibility on Dae Hyun. We can only hope that she will remain strong. But I also think Saet Byul might talk to Dae Hyun about the possibility to go back to the office job. They didn't talk about that and Saet Byul might give him her opinion on the whole matter and that he shouldn't stay in the store for her sake. It's definitely gonna be interesting how things works out today. :D

On another note:

We will get 2 more cameos this episode. First Ayumi who I guess might play Jangmi? But I'm unsure she looks a bit too young for Jangmi. But she is also looked young in the preview. And the other cameo will be by Shim Hyun Seob. :)

Synopsis for ep 14:

"Dae Hyun became a representative advisor to the store franchise. Saet Byul works harder to fill Dae Hyun's place, but the convenience store without Dae Hyun feels empty. Dae Hyun, who worked too hard as an advisor and as a convenience store worker at the same time, eventually collapsed...

It's funny that it was trending on Naver for "meaning of red tulips". I searched the same thing on Google right after watching episode 13 too.

The ratings of this drama on SBS doesn't include viewers on Lifetime and SKY channels in Korea, so it's not a comprehensive rating for Backstreet Rookie. It's the first time ever that a Korean drama has been aired at the same time by multiple channels, so the ratings on SBS alone doesn't really reflect the true total viewership ratings in Korea. If you notice on WAVVE online streaming platform, the hit drama "Once Again" has been trending at 2nd place while Backstreet Rookie has been on top 1 for the past few weeks even though drama 'Once Again' often has very high ratings on KBS channel of around 30%. It means that drama Backstreet Rookie is quite popular, right?

Recently both KYJ and JCW had some exclusive interviews with Taiwanese media. I think Backstreet Rookie is also popular in Taiwan now even though it is not aired on any major broadcast station in that country yet (Viewers can only watch it online via iQIYI). I knew JCW is well-known in Taiwan since Empress Ki, but it's very interesting that 3 different magazines recently invited him for interview with questions related to his current drama while Backstreet Rookie still has not yet finished.

A+E Networks Korea’s first Korean drama series ‘Backstreet Rookie’ hits international popularity

Backstreet Rookie the first Korean TV series invested in by global media group A+E Networks®, has found fans both internationally as well as on Lifetime® Korea and on SBS Korea since its premiere in June.
It is being aired as an SBS Korea Friday-Saturday primetime drama in Korea and ranks No. 1 in viewer ratings among all mini-series in Korea in its timeslot. In its second window on Lifetime, it ranks first in the same time slot for cable viewing in multiple key demo targets (Male and Female) every week. The show recorded the highest ratings of 2020 for Lifetime in its target demo (women aged 25-39). With Backstreet Rookie as the anchor, Lifetime’s mix of local dramas and global shows have found an expanded viewership of 186 percent over the same period last year. (as per Nielsen Korea)
According to iQIYI, which simultaneously airs the show globally ex-Japan and Mainland China, Backstreet Rookie was consistently rated as the top TV series from its 1st to 10th episode in Asia markets, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam etc. It also made it to the top among 30 Korean TV series aired on the platform during the first half of the year.

The amazing chemistry of lead actors Ji Chang-wook (as Choi Dae-hyun) and Kim Yoo-jung (as Jung Saet-byul), has led to high praise for their performances. The series is also the most talked-about program (according to iQIYI’s social media pages) in online communities that obsess over Korean dramas.

The show is the first Korean TV series invested in by global media group A+E Networks and produced by Taewon Entertainment. It is simultaneously aired globally on Fridays and Saturdays at 10:00 p.m. (except for China and Japan) by the Korean broadcasting company SBS and iQIYI, the world’s largest OTT platform. In Japan, the local OTT platform U-NEXT has acquired broadcasting rights. Viewers can also watch the show on the Lifetime channel in Korea.

Youngsun Soh, General Manager, A+E Networks Korea said, “We are very pleased that the first premium Korean drama, “Backstreet Rookie” produced and invested by A+E Networks, has fulfilled the expectations of fans who were familiar with the webtoon. We will continue to look for drama opportunities that satisfy fans from around the world, works for our production partners, and serves to grow the Lifetime brand in Korea.”

I think there is also a different between getting hit with a piece of wood - depending of course how heavy it is - and being kicked and beaten up on the floor. So Saet Byul couldn't take that. :( And of course this is a drama in which a lot is overexaggerated, just like Saet Byul's cool fighting scene later that episode. So she gets away with a lot. Her healing is also extraordinary.

At this time we don't know what Dae Hyun wants. Does he really want to be doing the job Yeon Joo has set up for him, or is he doing it because his mom and Saet Byul says he should. I don't get why she is trying to "correct" something with out actually listening to what Dae Hyun wants. At this moment she is the catalyst for him being overworked. but she wants everyone else to take responsibility for it and make him do what she wants him to do.

Yeon Joo is just annoying at this point.   rich people gifs | WiffleGif

I also don't know what he really wants. He looked in his element though when he was at the company to present his ideas. But at the same time, I wonder: would he have been happy in the office/company if he hadn't quit for Yeon Joo? Does he actually want to return? I also got the idea that he actually liked working at the convenience store from what he said. He just need to hire more people and those better not be his sister. In a store which is open 24/7 you need at least 4 or 5 people, so some people got a day off inbetween their shifts as well. So I think it's just a matter of organizating and human resources.

But I think the drama wants to aim for Saet Byul and Dae Hyun to follow their own dreams and maybe in the end Dae Hyun decides to go back or maybe he doesn't. But I think it's time for him say what he wants for sure.

I liked how he told Yeon Joo how many times he must repeat himself. But for us he is still a mystery sometimes. :D

From the text preview, could we expect that this time DH will make the ultimate choice to come back to run the convenience store with SB? It'll be great if that confirms his wish to be a convenience store owner rather a HQ business man. Especially because in the first place he opened the store more because he was kicked out of the office against his own wish.

@Jillia it would have been nice if we had continued to be inside his head, like in the first episode. We wouldn't have so many question, and I think we could have had a lot of fun with his inner struggle of being around Saet Byul. :D

Yes, I think it's fine if Saet Byul doesn't know his dreams as of now. But we as the viewers should have an understanding what he really wants. I don' t think he likes that Yeon Joo is manipulating her way back into his life and believes to know what's best for him. But what did we expect from her right? And I mean Saet Byul said the same actually. She told him to stay away from the company and I hope she will go back from that and think about what Dae Hyun wants. And maybe she will finally ask him?

She did ask him why he became a convenience store manager at such age and he didn't really answer. And maybe he finally will this episode. :D

I wonder if Saet-Byul knows how to do CPR when she sees Dae-Hyun collapse. He needs more oxygen, right?

I wouldn't mind a CPR kiss.

I love the shock in Dae Hyun's eyes before he smoothly pushes Saet Byul to the side. :joy: Boy, you're 29 years old not 19.
