[Drama 2020] The Flower of Evil, 악의 꽃

Ji Won is torn between her love for Hyun Soo, she's conflicted if he's truly the ruthless killer everyone seem to imply. I of course have stood by my stance that he's not LoL. Although I wonder who the accomplice is?

I wished Eun Ha wouldn't be so mean to Mommy.. just 'cause she's Daddy's girl and well who could blame her LoL!? Her Mommy does her best to provide for her too. She just is busy at work.

This is what I dislike on Korean society. Just because someone doesn't act the way they should doesn't mean they're a bad person ok? Like if a person is tanned they think it's dirty..? In Backstreet Rookie one of the characters is into reggae. And because of his dreadlocks, others quickly judged him as a beggar or a pervert tsk.

I feel like the drama is also subtly making a case on capable women; on the sacrifices they have to endure because of their choice to pursue a career. That's why I love Ji Won as a character. Sometimes there is a tendency for some writers to overdo the "strong and capable woman" archetype that they end up too cold. But Ji Won is warm and emotional. Her womanly instinct to protect her family is palpable. Yet, her judgment is hardly swayed by mere emotionality. She draws her strength both from her ability to love and to think rationally.

Putting the whole angst of the show on the side, there is a lot to admire about their relationship as well and how they are managing their family life. There's mutual respect on what they do and bring to the table. Hyun Su is happy and willing to assume the roles that are traditionally expected from the woman in the family. He's not spiteful that it's Ji Won who's "wearing pants", so to speak. Though this kind of arrangement is hardly new in the landscape of today3married life, there is still a strong adherence to tradition in most Asian societies. And often, there's animosity among couples who have to deal with reversal of roles in the family. So kudos writernim for creating this lovely family whom you're putting in so much pain right now. Haha!

BTW what do you think of this scene? JW didn’t outright say she knew about his real identity but she was obviously very angry and devastated. Do you think HS knows what she was implying? He looked quite shaken after she left.

Finally watched episode 6 with subs. It was surprising that Jiwon found out about her husband's secret so soon. I thought she would learn about it around ep 10-11. Funniest thing is DHS himself revealed his secret before his wife even started to suspect him. One things I am loving about CJW is that she didn't immediately believed those rumours like others. She was shocked and heartbroken at first but then decided to find out the truth herself. I can't blamed her if she becomes angry at him or take some time away from him. She's been lied for years. But I don't think she will go into revenge mood. Seems like she wants him to be punished only for the crimes he has committed. Even if his sister had murdered that village foreman he might still get punishment because he hid the truth.

There are some suspicion that Do Haesoo might be her father's accomplice I also think so but the one who put Jung Mi Seok on car seemed like a man. It can't be Do Min Seok because he had been with Hyun Soo that day. Was it real Beak Hee Sung or a character that hasn't been introduced yet?

I am glad that Moon Chaewon and Lee Joongi  finally have a drama that gives them the opportunity to showcase their talent. Both of them are brilliant actors but their scripts are not always great.

So Theory time :

1) Ji won’s only ground for arguing that Hyunso isn’t a psychopath/sociopath is that he can take care of the weak aka: his relationship with Eunha. But what if he watches parenting videos and imitates it like he imitates his emotions?

2) why is he in a good relationship with Eunha ?  Is he trying to use her does he genuinely care about her? We can only know when Eunha grows up and seeks boundaries and independence that if intentions are genuine or self motivated?

3) He’s in a good relationship with his sister and thinks about her a lot and cares for her. Contrary to what many people think, Ji won is not the first woman he loved or the first one to give him warmth or stability. She was the first one to give him normalcy that’s all.

4) He didn’t kill the driver specifically because the other detective was growing suspicious and he would be considered as a suspect if he died. So psychological torture.

5) What the eff does his mother feel for him that she even hates Eunha... please let it not a variation of odiepus complex

Wow, 6pages to back read, you guys  are on fire

I will be enjoying your posts while waiting Viki finish the subtitles for episode 5 & 6

And Two Weeks. Scholar was the latest  one on Netflix, so it has been quite some years his dramas not appearing there....don’t know why

it's all about money/biz contracts and who has the rights to broadcast the dramas... Netflix produces some new ones and buy some older ones... but some of the other dramas probably still own by other broadcasting companies...

woooooww you are right. DHS is also wearing the same teal shirt with white at the sleeves. soooo fast.

Lee Joon Gi said that FOE is like a puzzle game.

I'm compiling a list of puzzle pieces, and will try to update once their role has been explained in the drama:

1) Do Hae Soo's necklace - unknown. might actually belong to one of DMS's victims.
2) Baek Hee Sung's watch strap - semi explained. role is for CJW to identify him at the scene of the warehouse struggle
3) Fish key chain - semi explained to link the taxi driver to Hyun Soo, for Hyun Soo to realize his sister is suspicious/someone involved in the murders was alive and still in touch with his sister
4) Do Min Seok's Dog harness and Do Hyun Soo's pet dog - unknown
5) Kim Moo Jin's voice recorder - unknown. Was lost in the ahjumma's house.
6) Tape of Kim Moo Jin in Doo Min Seok's basement - contents unknown
7) Swimming pools/dried up pools - unknown, but seem to foreshadow something that will happen in the future
8) Do Min Seok's house - unknown, but secrets in the house might be revealed next week
9) Do Hyun Soo's walkman and cassette tape - unknown. what is in the cassette tape
10) Kim Moo Jin's video compilation from the past - unknown. however, the DHS who was captured in the tapes was smiling and having a good time. Could be used in the future to prove that DHS is not a psychopath.
11) that particular brand of beer - don't think it is an actual brand, so am not sure why it appears so many times.. anyway love it that the drama is not overwhelmed with product endorsements

If you have any more, please feel free to add on to the list!

FOE is full of twist and from the beginning the thought that Do Min Seok is a serial killer has been implanted on our head but after watching ep 6 with subs I now think that the screenwritter is setting up for the biggest twist, that Do Min Seok is not the serial killer. What if he’s also the victim? And he’s there watching for HS wanting to protect him from the real killer? The witness of the Jung Mi Sook's kidnap said 'the monster' was not Do Min Seok. The real serial killer is still alive (probably the same person who threatens Nam Soon Gil). It must be someone who has been introduced to us, but whoo.....

And I understand now the comments about how strong Ji Won is emotionally... goshh she held back tears and only let it out when she was by herself. Such strong woman.

I love the scene when HS asked the taxi driver how he was feeling when the wife is dead, he was trying his best to understand how Ji Won was feeling. It's clear he cares about her

Just rewatched ep 6 with subs. And I have to say, there is some quality film making especially for the opening sequence. The thing I really love about this show is the level of intent placed in each and every shot, some captures clues that will help the viewer solve the puzzle, others are edited in a way to enhance the viewers empathy with the characters. There is none of the touch and go, or flimsy cliff hangers from other k dramas, everything is planned and executed to perfection.

The editing in the opening sequence was just chef's kiss!!! The way the editor does a mixed montage of scenes from both the past and present almost seamlessly disorients the viewer. When he woke up I was still wondering if the scene was a flashback or not. The viewer is pushed into the same place of confusion that hyun soo is in after waking up from a coma. And it is significant that ji won is the one to break that spell for both hyun soo and the viewer. I think she is some sort of pathfinder for the show. I think it is also a subtle way of hinting to the viewer, if u want the truth, look at ji won, as hyun soo is often an unreliable narrator in his own story. If you want to find out who the real hyun soo is, it is probably the version of him that ji won sees.

This show is so rare in Kdrama. It's already ep6 but the thrill, mystery and intense is still intact and there's no slow episodes. But i didn't expect Ji Won to protects him there might not be any innocent character here except for EH also i don't think Hae Soo is involved in the murders as i believe everything Hyun Soo says at this point. I hope i'm not getting manipulated by him. Did i say i love Moo Jin i look forward to every scene he's in :D. BTW how did they manage to make the baby call him dad that's some A+ acting haha. I'm liking LJG's new hairstyle next episode  excuse my shallowness.

Who is the accomplice of Do Min Seok? Do Hae Soo, the parents (Baeks), Do Min Seok's wife or a new character?

why is Kim ji hoon's character also baek hee sung? is LJG's charac his brother? sorry but i'm still in the dark LOLs is he the real son's killer? woah i'm quite baffled hahaha

Kim Ji Hoon is the real Baek Hee Seong, son of the older Baek couple. Sadly, he's in a coma. Lee Joon Gi is the adoptive son who has "borrowed" Baek Hee Seong identity. His real self is Do Hyun Su, son of the serial killer Do Min Seok. I don't think Lee Joon Gi character is related to Kim Ji Hoon character. I hope i got these right and sorry if I gave you spoilers, I wasn't sure which episode you are now.

Hi, all. So thrilled about the character descriptions >.< The descriptions about HS's biological and adoptive fathers actually made me think HS really is innocent. but we will see... Here's my translation of all the character descriptions.

-

FLOWER OF EVIL

Characters

-

Baek Heesung (39)

| Metal Craft Artist

“I lied.. Just a little bit..”

He would do anything and go to any length to hold on to what he has ‘now’.

A devoted husband, loving and caring father, and ordinary man. But the man who has a secret that he does not want anyone to find out. Just like a sailboat caught in a storm against its will, his life has always been on the verge of capsizing.

But he endured. He endured and met a woman. Meeting this woman brought ‘calm’ back to his life. That woman is his current wife, Jiwon. But Jiwon knows nothing: that Heesung changed his identity to hide his past. And what kind of person he really is.

Heesung will keep Jiwon in the dark until the very last moment. He has no guilty conscience. Because if the man loses the “now,” his life will end up in burning hell anyway.

-

Gong Mija (64)

| Pharmacist

Heesung’s mother who runs a pharmacy. She loses her patience and gets hysterical when she feels something gets out of her control, whether it’s about a person or some situation.

She is often overbearing, but deep inside, feels strangely possessive towards Heesung because of her excessive attachment to him.

So when Heesung coldly draws the line, she feels a pang of disappointment. And the disappointment turns into words that put pressure on Heesung. “You think your life is your own?”

-

Baek Manwoo (67)

| CEO of University Hospital

Heesung’s father. Surgical specialist and emergency medicine specialist. As CEO of a university hospital, he is revered and admired by everyone. Gentle, warm, and competent, he often sets a great example for his colleagues and junior doctors. He lives the kind of life everyone wishes they had.

But just like the dark side of the moon, no one has ever seen the other side of Manwoo. The family’s secret that no one has ever imagined. 15 years ago, Manwoo found himself in the biggest crisis of his life. It was an accident.

But he made a deal to keep this embarrassing part of his life buried. At the time, he thought it was the best he could do.

-

Cha Jiwon (37)

| Homicide Detective

“You… Who really are you?”

A woman who has passionately loved Heesung, but also a homicide detective who pushes him to the edge of a cliff.

When she’s at work on a crime scene, she is a competent detective who solves the case with her sharp instinct and investigative skills. At home, in front of her husband, she lets her guard down completely. She’s helplessly in love with her husband.

But as she becomes suspicious of her husband’s past, she starts to dig into the layers of secrets he has hidden. What if the past and the identity of my husband as I have known – are all a lie? What if her husband is the link that connects all these mysterious and terrible crimes?

And she has to answer the most brutal question that she asks herself: What if she still loves him…?

-

Moon Youngok (61)

| Convenience Store Owner

Jiwon’s mother. She’s run this convenience store since Jiwon was a child.

She lives near Jiwon’s and often takes care of her granddaughter Eunha. She also loves and cares for Heesung, her son-in-law as if he was her real son.

-

Baek Eunha (6)

She feels a strong attachment to her dad Heesung because she spends more time with him than with her mother Jiwon, who works outside.

She is happiness and peace personified, who makes Jiwon and Heesung smile and even make Mija and Manwoo let their guards down.

-

Do Haesoo (37)

| Special Effects Makeup Artist

“Everything has changed… We cannot go back where we used to be.”

Daughter of a serial killer who has borne the brunt of her family’s terrible past.

Older sister of Do Hyunsoo. She has such a delicate, fragile appearance, but also has this unapproachable, serious aura around her. Her mother was killed by her father, and her brother is a fugitive. No wonder her family’s tragic story has attracted nationwide attention.

Wherever she went, the cameras and reporters made sure to find her, and they plague Haesoo with questions about her past. Why her father did that, how that murder made him feel, how he chose his victims, and what kind of person he was. Haesoo knows nothing about them. Because father and Hyunsoo were so close she couldn’t come between them.

18 years ago, on that brutal night, no one knows what really happened. “Sister, you live an ordinary life.” Hyunsoo left her just like that. Since then, she has never seen him. Then, Haesoo’s first love Moojin and the past come back to haunt her. The serial killings her father committed 18 years ago – the case is not closed yet.

-

Do Minseok (Deceased)

| Serial Killer

Father of Do Haesoo and Do Hyunsoo. Culprit in the ‘Yeonju Serial Killings’ that sent shockwaves through the entire country 18 years ago.

The number of victims that have been discovered so far totals seven. There may well be other victims yet to be found. But he killed himself before he got caught by the police. So there is no way to find out now.

-

Do Hyunsoo (36)

| Accomplice in Serial Killings?

Younger brother of Do Haesoo. Father Do Minseok killed himself and rumors started to circulate throughout town. That there is an accomplice of serial killer Do Minseok.

That the accomplice is his son, who looks just like his father. When the chief of the town was murdered, Hyunsoo was 18. And he vanished into thin air.

-

Kim Moojin (36)

| Reporter for [Hanjugan Weekly]

“How come I always end up finding out dangerous secrets I should not know?”

Reporter who wind up breaking exclusive news as things happen by a twist of fate.

Free-spirited, egocentric, and cunning. He has an extraordinary adaptability wherever he goes.

In his first year in journalism, his work ethic just disappeared along with his passion as a reporter. Moojin just lurks and hunts for scoops and clickbait news stories.

Let’s see… Psychopathic father who tried to kill his obese child? The case totally sounds like Moojin’s cup of tea. Moojin is greatly interested in psychopaths. Why? Because they are sensational. Today, as usual, he lingers around a crime scene and bothers detective Cha Jiwon, who he met when he used to work with the police to report news. Hearing that her husband is a skilled metal craft artist, his eyes flash with recognition.

Metal craft artist. It sounds so familiar to Moojin. The culprit in the serial killings 18 years ago back in his hometown was also a metal craft artist. His daughter happened to be Moojin’s first love. Do Haesoo… My first love… Is she still harboring resentment towards me? Has she changed a lot? Does she often think about me?

-

Gang Pilyoung (51)

| [Hanjugan] Team Leader

Moojin’s immediate supervisor who doesn’t hesitate to offer Moojin advice.

She recognizes Moojin’s journalistic skills at getting exclusive news items, and even enables his obsession with scoops.

But at the back of her mind, she cares for Moojin as a person, like her little brother.

-

Investigation Team

Lee Woochul (43)

| Leader of Homicide Investigation Team 3

Leader of Homicide Investigation Team 3 where Jiwon belongs. Very rational and patient.

Maybe he appears too rational, so some might think he is too cold. He always bickers with Jaesup. But he is a thoughtful leader who puts the safety of his team members first.

-

Choi Jaesup (43)

| Veteran Detective

Veteran detective and immediate supervisor of Jiwon. He’s unrivaled when it comes to ‘connections.’ ‘Old-school’ detective who often ignores the law and proceeds with investigations using his instinct.

Typical old guy who says whatever that comes to his mind, but he also speaks up when the other team members stay respectful.

-

Lim Hojoon (29)

| Youngest Team Member

Youngest member of the investigation team and Jiwon’s partner detective. Whenever he wants to quit because of the heavy workload, it’s Jiwon who has always encouraged him not to quit. Hojoon finds himself becoming a better person when he is with Jiwon. He respects and admires Jiwon.

-

Yoon Sangpil (51)

| Section Chief

Chief of the homicide investigation section.

He often just relies on routine procedures when handling cases, but when it’s really important, he provides as much support as Investigation Team 3 needs. Short-tempered, he is often seen yelling at the detectives who get into trouble.

Let Wait for another surprise. Like a puzzle we must collect one by one dialog to see the secret about murder case.Cha Ji Won maybe find evident in Do Hyun father workshop.I also interest what  cassette recorder that Do Hyun Su have). In episode 6 Detective Choi start to suspect Do Hyun Su. Thank God DHS don't kill taxi driver, he really not psychopath. He just can't express his feeling. I suspect Baek Man Wo (Baek Hee Sung real father). He is like keep secret and he like don't like Do Hyun Su.He just don't want his family reputation down.He is misterious person in this drama.Who's car is use to kidnap taxi driver wife? and who's voice in cassette recorder to blackmail ahjummas witness? So many mystery to solve in this drama. How about the serial murder victim? Is also never exposed clearly. We hope Cha Ji Won keep support her husband and help him clear his reputation. They must life happily ever after

Yes. Do Hyun Su mother is also one of serial murder victim. In episode 6, Cha aji Won read Do Hyun Su File investigation, ahjummas said that he didn't even to care even when he heard that they found his mother's body. Why Do Meon Soek kill his wife? Why Do Min Soek must suicide if he really a psicopath. So confused.
