Yes, it is confirmed. They are filming from March and probably they did not finish filming. Probably Shin Sung Rok will have time to make a cameo. Or he will play Logan Lee. We don`t know who is playing this character, who is not a lead character in season 1.

From what I saw in previews, Jo Dan tae is much similar with his Return`s character. Perhaps he will have other oportunities to play in another drama of Kim Sun Ok.

Eugene recently gave an interview about her upcoming drama, “The Penthouse.”

“The Penthouse” is a new drama from SBS set in an exclusive luxury 100-floor penthouse apartment and centers around the conflict between three women: the unapproachable queen (Lee Ji Ah), the prima donna with endless greed and ambition (Kim So Yeon), and the woman who will stick at nothing to enter high society (Eugene).

Eugene’s character, Oh Yoon Hee, hustles every day of her life to make sure that her daughter, Bae Ro Na (Bae Hyun Soo), will not grow up poor like she did. She has bet her life on entering the Hera Palace, the exclusive penthouse apartment that is the best of its kind in the country, but she ends up transforming into a villain to get what she wants.

Eugene said, “I got thrills while reading the script. I remember that after I finished, I sat there and read it again. Each character in the script felt so alive. Yoon Hee was also a character I’d never played before, so I felt drawn to her.”

She continued, “Every time I start a new project, I have the desire to take on a new character that I haven’t tried before. I crave playing diverse characters. Oh Yoon Hee is completely opposite from me in real life, so I thought it would be a new challenge. That’s why I’m both excited and worried about playing her.

“I tried hard to imagine what Oh Yoon Hee’s early life would have been like. Since Yoon Hee’s nature would have developed in her childhood surroundings, I did some research and thought about how her personality would change naturally from there.”

Although Eugene is the mother of two daughters in real life, her onscreen daughter is much older. She said, “I understand her maternal love that makes her give it all for her daughter, but to be honest, she is a character who has a different personality and perspective from me. If it was me in that situation, I think I would have made a different choice. But as an actor, I am trying to convey Yoon Hee’s sincerity so that viewers can relate to her.

Actor Bong Tae Gyu spoke frankly about gendered expectations in clothing in response to his wearing a skirt to a press conference.

On October 24, Bong Tae Gyu shared a screenshot of an article about his fashion choices for the press conference of his upcoming drama “The Penthouse.” At the press conference, which was held on October 22, he wore a long skirt and blazer that was inspired by school uniform styles. The screenshot of the article included the caption, “Bong Tae Gyu, fashion that crosses lines.”

I don’t really think that I crossed a line… It was very comfortable. I wonder how nice it would have been if I could’ve worn it from the start? At least now I understand how practical skirts can be. More dramas you say? Coming right up! Even though it feels like we’ve just had a ton of dramas premiere, there are three new shows this week, and they couldn’t be more different. At the top of the list (and rightly so) is our time travel thriller Kairos, but if you want the thrills without the time travel component, there’s SBS’s Penthouse, which looks like it could be fun. Finally, we have a legal comedy to round out our premieres, this one starring a pair that stands up for the wrongfully accused.

Reasons to watch: My brain says weekend makjang, but the facts (and the sumptuous-looking production level) say no, SBS primetime slot. Dramas that take a deep (and dramatic) look at social strata are always interesting experiments, and this one gives off SKY Castle vibes, but has a cool microcosm all its own: a luxury apartment building. Some characters rule there, some will do anything to get in there, and thrills, secrets, and red-hot pokers are promised. It will definitely be crazy, but it’ll also be fun to see the performances that come out of this one.

I can`t see how this intense characters who had to shout a lot could be stressed releaved for the actors but that`s my number one problem in Kim Sun ok`s dramas. I hate the scenes while the characters yell, hit one another all the time. I could not resisted The Last Empress very much , just 6 episodes. I watched some videos of The Last Empress or other famous dramas of Kim Sun ok and I hate it so much the conflict she brings in her dramas. I just thought this time it will be a little different. Because the women are in the upper class, I thought they will show more restraint but I doubt. In the last dramas the characters were in the royal family and they acted like low class/slum people all the time.  I`ve already heard a lot of shouting in the preview. Poor Soyeon! I feel you. She had to shout more than she thought and she made the eyes look so big to express an extremely frustrated and angry character. I saw this expression in all of crazy makjang dramas. I will not wish for anything but to be able to resist all 40 episodes. For the cast and crew I wish this drama to be a success.

 

I understand why Eugene liked to eat the prop food on the set. I would have tried to eat it too.

I watched without subtitles. I want to feel the vibe of this drama. I saw a lot of opulence. The set must have cost so much.

 

I felt bored. I want to see with subtitles again to know what they said. Seo Jin`s seduction on Jo Dan Tae was funny and spiced up things for me. They were almost caught two times by their spouses, one time by Su Ryun and next time by Yoon Chul. I got the impression that they weren`t in an affair before but I could be wrong. I don`t know what is missing from this show. I expected a better first episode. But probably it is just me. It is just my impression.

I can`t connect with the characters, not even with the good characters. The stunt that Oh Yoon hee did at that simulacrum of the school hearing was too much.  I thought it was a dream but not. She run like a cartoon character to locked down the man (the lawyer? the director? )  who accused her daughter. I was supposed to cheer for her? It was ridiculous. It was ridiculous that Baerona was accused too.  Je-nI accused her that she hurt her with a red paint? And her mother knew that it was a fake incident too. I can`t take this show serious.

 

I enjoyed to see So yeon and Uhm Ki joon in the scenes where they flirted with each other. But that`s it. And her outfits. Perhaps I will like the first episode better when I will watch it with subtiltes. I don`t think I will comment more about this show. Right now I don`t feel like I have something to say. I hope the future developments will be more satisfying. I look further to read other comments/ impressions.

Watching the first episode...

I must say sorry but the actor who plays kim so yeon's husband is really miscast in this role...

He seems more like a younger brother than a husband to ksy...and he doesnt give off a surgeon aura...

They shld have cast an older actor like e.g. lee sang yoon in this role...

The previous actor choice wld have been good too...

 

Eugene did really well so far..

And you get to see parallels between eugene's and her daughter's lives in high schools... the injustice they suffered due to not being from rich families...

 

And you get to see Eugene and ksy in high school uniforms too..

 

I will continue to watch but i will always cringe when i see ksy's character's husband in the drama...

I think the director wanted him because he wanted to bring the disfunctional bromance from Return again in Penthouse. He lost Shin Sun Rok and he brought Yoon Jong Hoon.   I knew he was looking very young when I see the casting. Park Eun seok is looking young too but perhaps he was more suitable for the role. I wish the original cast, Oh Man seok would have been perfect but I can`t see why they wanted him for the role right now. I hope we`ll see more for this character. I like Yoon Jong Hoon in other roles so I will wait to see more of his character to get an impression. 

 

I am curious how is the relationship between Seo Jin and Yoon Chul. I did not understand the dialogue so I can`t say exactly. When he saw his wife in the outfit for dinner  (the lace blouse and leather skirt) he commented something. Why she was so angry that she broke the bottle of wine?

 

The girl who dies is the tutor. Let see what is her story. She entered the Hera Palace with an agenda. Su ryun and Joo Dan tae have a comatose daughter but why he did not go to see her if there was a medical crissis? And why he put his right man to follow her? I am curious but not that curious.

“The Penthouse” Comes Out Swinging With Strong Premiere Ratings + “Kairos” Makes Modest Debut

Two new dramas premiered in the Monday-Tuesday evening time slot!

Both SBS’s “The Penthouse” and MBC’s “Kairos” aired their first episodes on October 26. “The Penthouse” is from the pen of well-known screenwriter Kim Soon Ok and stars Lee Ji Ah, Kim So Yeon, and Eugene in a thriller melodrama about the people who inhabit a wealthy 100-floor penthouse apartment. “Kairos” stars Shin Sung Rok and Lee Se Young in a fantasy thriller about a man and a woman who connect through a phone call to search for their missing loved ones despite living in different times.

According to Nielsen Korea, “The Penthouse” debuted with average nationwide ratings of 6.7, 9.2, and 9.1 percent. This is a strong start for a weekday evening drama, approaching the 10 percent mark upon its debut, and higher than the finale ratings of its predecessor in this time slot, “Do You Like Brahms?“.

I watched with subtitles and it was a little better. I still don`t like the noise and yelling, the atrocious cat fights of female characters. Nobody behaves like that. I rolled my eyes so much. I get why they show the rich people so shallow and ridiculous and I wish they made this show a little more serious. But that`s it.

 

I still don`t understand why the rich people is making their children (all of them!!!!!) go to classical music school. It is not realistic. OK, if some of them were talented and that was their passion I would have understand but no, it is not the case. In other shows (and in reality) the rich people want their children professions like laywers, doctors, bankers, not singers. I know that training in classical music is expensive but I never heard of people insisting for their children to go to such schools.

 

I still found the whole Bae Rona set up unconvincing and ridiculous. Just to show how rich are making things unfair? I get it but something more serious, please! But that`s the tone of the drama. I should not get things in this drama serious. It is a parody.

I still think that Seo Jin and Joo Dan Tae`s starting affair is interesting to watch. But I don`t think she made a good move. She doesn`t know how crazy he is. But they match. I think he can help her in what she needs but in the long term could be problematic. He is not an easy man to deal with. Both strong headed.  But we`ll see how this relationship developes. If they will part ways eventually or maybe become more close.

 

Seo Jin is a woman who likes to show her power, her beauty and her greed could be frustrating for her husband  but I found it uncomfortable to watch her husband belittle her in front to the guests. I understand her angry and frustration. Perhaps I could understand Yoon Chul if he won`t participate at those dinners or other rich social events but he is one of them now. He should know by now how it is his wife, what she wants. I don`t pity him that his wife is looking at another man. I feel sorry for Jo Dan Tae `s wife. She is indeed nice. 

 

The tutor is linked with some charcters, I am sure. The first season will end with the killing and the second season we`ll find out who did it? I am not curious right now. Maybe because I am not involved emotionally in the story.

I finished episode 1.  Opening scene. Was it Seo-Jin who feel or was pushed from the from the high rise elevator crashing onto ceiling landing on the huge angel statue fountain? It was her right? And that was the present  time. 

 

The we go back to flashback. 2 months ago. 

 

It's definitely "Sky Castle" for the arts. It lack the class and refine execution of the aforementioned one.  It's the type of drama...like a 50 episode of drama. Melodrama.  Too much shouting. But I watch the episode all the way and I'll continue to watch. I'm interested. Secrets abound aplenty and who knows....Bae Ro Na's  father could turn out to be Dan-Tae. Shocker.. But she said already father is dead.

 

There was the gransdiose. The opulence of Hera Place and of wealthy aura Su-Ryeon (Lee Ji Ah- in a quite unobtrusive way. and Seo-Jin (Kim So Yeon) -flaunting out there. and Dan-Tae (Uhm Ki Joon)- rich successful architect. The rest looks middle upper class in comparison. 

 

Seo Jin and Oh Yoon Hee (Eugene) has a bad history (tonya harding style).  Top soprano fighting to be top of class, competition and in school arts. SJ used father's position to get the grand prize in the competition. YH was the best clearly and even at school, she's always being pushed over, getting  the raw end of everything. Blamed for an accident involving SJ at school. She always goes back to the incidents involving SJ and this is the reason why she doesn't want her daughter Bae Ro Na to go the same route. She remember all the things done to her out of spite and malice and jealousy. Her daughter is going through the same thing she's had to deal and experience back when she was  younger. A jealous competitor, trying to put blame and ruin chances because Jenny (Jin Jee Hee) feels threatened. 

 

Rona and Jenny has the same rivalry like that of Seo Jin and  Yoon Hee.

 

And now back to the adults and their messy irritating adult lives.

 

Kang Ma Ri - Jenny's mother  is trying hard to fit in to the social class in a - I'm rich, I have money my husband's earning a lot in Dubai - loudmouth and tolerate'sand dare I say encourages daughter's crimes and misdemeanors. Like shuddap!

 

Go Sang Ah - Minhyuk's mother. Married to a momma's boy Lee Kyu Jin (Bong Tae Gyu) a rich man - child lawyer. She's  treated like  a hired help by husband's sisters and MIL  Married into family by virtue of husband's mother who's got family business.

 

Ha Yoon Cheol- ( don't know who the actor is) aka Dr. Ha or the husband of SJ. I'll be honest. ngl first time he entered into the scene but yeah.. looks more like younger brother. Awkward and mismatched. Not sure what his deal is. Bickers with SJ like she's irritating and can't stand her. It's vice versa anyway. SJ is the same with him. 

 

Joo Dan-Tae - I wonder if you're  Rona's father???? it's longer drama, you never know. Married to SR having an affair  with SJ. Of course they're having an affair. behind the back of their spouses. I feel bad for SR actually. Only episode 1 and not yet sure what also his deal is. Looks like a manipulator. 

 

Seo Jin - Karma's gonna bite her. Or it already did. Again she's the one who fell????? at the opening scene? There's probably a back story  about her that made the attitude mean girl.. carried over to adult life. I can tell she envies everything about SR.

 

Su Ryeon- like I said quiet in a away that isn't showy. Feels like she's meek and carries problems by hersefl. I feel she already suspects JDT having an affair, but she loves him so..let it be? She's got the social status the money the husband but she doesn't have the LOVE she's probably craving... from husband from her father? or mother?

 

BTW:  Her children are the twins Seok Joon and Seok Kyung

 

Oh Yoon Hee -Rona's mother. She's the poor one who got mistreated, blamed, conned, cheated out of deserved stardom as the next soprano vocalist. I wonder what happened to Rona's father. Her ex husband or lover. She's raising Rona alone, by  doing real estate job and she's getting the brunt of impossible clients. History seems to be repeating it self as what's happening to her daughter is deja vu. She experienced it all back then hence the reason she is adamant not to let Rona continue with the singing lessons and having vocal coach and continue being soprano. 

 

The confrontation between adult YH and SJ, YH realized that she want's Rona to continue to achieve what she was robbed off during her time.  She's going to expose SJ through Rona. But... but... but. I think Rona's  going to be close SJ and this will create misunderstanding  between mother and daughter in the long run.  Rona's still not aware of her mother's past.

 

No comment yet on the math tutor from UCLA cause.. not sure what her deal is. 

 

So over all... it's melodrama. Not quite the finesse  and elegance I was looking for. Even the writing lacks something but I will continue to watch. I like actors. I like to see revelations.

 

 

@larus does KSY look kinda thin? Not sure what is the correct term. Slim?  Maybe just some angles  showing her face. But I like class and sass.. she's the antagonist here. The mean one but she and Lee Ji Ah.. I like how they're always wearing these classy outfits.  And yes... too much shouting.  I'm curious about SR. who did she visit in the hospital? What's going to happen to the affair of JDT and SJ... naughty!

 

@SexyDolceVita I agree with the observation. 

 

So episode 1 was just flashback two months ago. All that and it was all just a flashback. I'll wait for episode 2 sub.
