I don't know what happened with Netlix. But, I read somewhere that it was being subbed by VIU.

Since VIU coverage area excludes US, I don't know if some other site can obtain license to sub in US.???

Glad to know what the problem is.  Frustrating but understandable.

@40somethingahjumma  Thank you for your summary of ep 1 and 2.  It was so easy to follow yet felt academic. I feel a lot smarter having just read it. Your must do a lot of writing or enjoy writing. :)

@thistle "Sadly, it is not in my budget --it's the dodgy not-legal sites for me."

I'm only replying since budget seems to be the problem.

Free is in everybody's budget. Actually, free with ads

Not free.  The not-legal sites give you porn ads for the "free watch". They are sneaky. They put the ad in the middle of the screen when the best part of the drama is showing. If you close your eyes on their naughty ads you miss the drama too. :o

Next Monday try watching Good Detective Ep3  on ODK free with ads.  It comes on around 8am where I live in usa. I don't log in. I go to the ODK site. I'll look to see if Ep3 is ready, I'll click the play button and it starts. If I wait till after noon, then the episode is subbed. You might want to multitask during their ads. Ads are around 3 min long. In an hour drama the ads will pop up about ten times. :D

Netflix is not free. Somebody's paying for it. Most families have it. We pay for it in my house.:) And  some people, not only have Netflix, they pay for Viki, Kocowa, HBO, and 200+ channels.

For those who responded to this post, I actually wasn't finished with it. It took me an hour or less to edit it. but it seems you got the just of it.

Humm. The color of my text just changed color by itself.  I wonder why? Thanks if somebody did it for me.^_^

Since a lot of you say you are in USA, why can't you get it thru OnDemandKorea. It's a legit site. It covers USA and Canada. I watched it last night subbed. Most premium sites let you watch it for free the first 24hrs. Now if they are slow to sub it and take longer then 24hrs, that's another case.  You can catch ep2 subbed free if you do it today usa, canada time. After that it's premium and you have to pay to watch ep 1 and 2. So, please let me know if it works for your or not.:)

I just looked at VIU. I see it doesn't include North or South America.

Thanks so much for sharing this info @brooksmom. This is my first time hearing about OnDemandKorea. I am in the US and usually have a hard time finding sites to watch dramas that are not on Netflix. Just signed up and even found the app on my phone. :)

I have not had enough down-time to watch yet so I half-closed my eyes coming here. Hope everyone is enjoying it so far. Will try to catch up and follow along with everyone.

Wow, I would never have guessed that JSJ is 38. Baby-face indeed! This will be my first time seeing him in a drama. I do like what I have seen of him in the teasers shared here so far.

The not-legal sites that I use do not do this.  And I don't visit sites that do.

No, it isn't free; that's surely true.  I have allowed myself the extra expense of one year of basic Netflix because there is a very special show that will air this year only and I wouldn't miss it for the world.  It is very much Not in my budget and I am giving up other things to pay for it.  When 2020 is over, I'm cancelling.  My budget is very slender indeed.

I cannot imagine what people do with 200 channels.  I don't even have local TV service.

It's interesting to know the options that are out there.  Thank you for sharing about ODK.

@triplem, I also like OJH’s calm approach to investigating. He says very little but he observes all that’s going on and come to solid conclusions.

As to KDC, at first he gave me pause with his focus on his upcoming promotion. I didn’t like that he gave priority to his career advancement over the possibility that he might have unknowingly put an innocent man on death row and basically destroyed that man’s family. However, I also could understand from a human point of view that he must have worked hard or waited a long time for that promotion. Thankfully he’s in the right frame of mind now to understand that he should correct this travesty of justice.

I can tell right off the bat that this show will be about corruption in the police office and the legal system. I believe that the leader of Crime Unit 1 was involved in the coverup. I also believe that he might have killed the husband of the woman he’s dating and pass it off as one of the serial murders. I believe the woman’s dead husband is the cop who was found in the field on November 11, 2015. Of course this is just speculation on my part but this thought sprung into my mind after I saw him show up at the widow’s shop after JSK interviewed her for her article on the families of the victims.

I think the watch OJH is wearing will be significant. There’s only two of a kind in Korea so then the person who threw the female body into the river in the first scene of the show should also be a wealthy person. At first I thought that the watch OJH bought might have been the same watch but then I don’t know if anyone found it on the side of the street.

Anyway, I enjoyed the first two episodes. I hope LDC survives and is exonerated. I would hate to see him really die for a crime he didn’t commit. @brooksmom @snowlou @thistle @joccu

I finally watched 1 & 2. It was good. I like the pace. It is not overwhelming and seems like a straightforward story compared to some detective stories I've previously seen. As many friends here have already mentioned, it seems pretty clear that the investigation and closure of LDC’s case 5 years ago was mishandled by the crime unit - intentionally. Park Gun Ho is definitely trying to seek justice and push the seemingly moral detectives (KDC and OJH) into reinvestigating the case while the corrupt ones are still trying to subdue the truth. Maybe PGH's reason for doing so relates to the biblical verse he recited which was Matthew 23, Verse 33: "You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?"

On the media side, I think JSK will face a similar struggle, but I have a feeling her senior, YJS, is aware of the corruption between the various entities and with that, may be able to help guide her to exposing the truth. Should be really interesting when Oh Jung Se’s character is finally introduced to the story.

Meanwhile, I wanted to mention something that I had previously read in an article. It described that in one of the teaser videos, the following key words were associated with each of the characters:

“Silence”

Kang Do Chang (Son Hyun Joo)

”Truth"

Oh Ji Hyuk (Jang Seung Jo)

“Justice”

Jin Seo Kyung (Lee Elijah)

“Power”

Oh Jong Tae (Oh Jung Se)

“Conspiracy”

Yoo Jeong Seok (Ji Seung Hyun)

Based on what we have seen so far, I could kind of see why these particular words were paired with each of the characters (except not with OJT’s yet). Especially with KDC, when it becomes more evident that LDC was falsely sentenced to death, I think he will momentarily struggle with keeping silent or not partly because his promotion will be at stake, but mostly because it will wreak disruption within the department which will have a domino effect externally. Consciously though, I believe that he will do the right thing and truly partner up with OJH to uncover the truth.

am writing a really brief note about the verse that this character recited - putting rest in spoiler

Spoiler

as a christian, I normally don't pay attention to any text provided in dramas as it is easy to take things out of context or written by people of other faith who don't really understand the context. (any text must be looked within the context to really understand the meaning and takeaways for life and practical living). however, something that stood out to me in the beginning of this drama was the disclaimer that this story isn't a reference to any real life crime or police or religious organization. so the writer and PD seem to be very sensitive and stressing that they are not pointing fingers at anyone. also the tone of the drama is warm and not bleak -- generally, bleak dramas are all about how everyone is terrible while the warm dramas show how there are good and bad people but it does not mean bad only wins. therefore, it made me curious about the choice of passage quoted as I felt a bit confident the writer is not going to be picking this at random.

so I read some bible commentary on this - this particular verse is actually a condemnation of the religious leaders of that time who outwardly seemed to be good but actually were not.

Ye servants, ye generation of vipers -- ".....express their craft and subtlety, their inward poison, and venomous nature; their fair outside, and specious pretences; their hypocrisy, malice, and wickedness"

damnation to hell -- "...indicating that the men who are predestined to superlative wickedness are appropriately doomed to the uttermost penalty."

the verse means that wicked people can pretend to be good but God knows and sees and they will be appropriately judged.

so now after understanding this verse, it is clear that smirk criminal (whatever his name is) was saying the police, who are keepers of the law and supposed to be good, were corrupt and hypocrite. because of their malice, they are doomed to fall even more and will be punished greatly.

will comment later after watching ep 2. hope this is helpful to anyone wondering what this verse was about.

press and journalist and people can sometimes be cruel. It¨s not the children, partner or relatives faults if a person who you are related kills someone.  LDC daugher definetely was wrong by public and the press. Does LDC daughter believe that her father is a murderer or does she believe that he is innocent?

I think she believes that he is innocent hence partnering up with the evangelist to bring LDC's case to public attention. That scene with the crowd of reporters felt quite meaningful to me too because it shows that press and journalism held a lot of power for both doing good and doing harm. They can bring justice to LDC or they can also negatively impact the lives of the innocent like LDC's daughter. Her life has been wrecked by the press but the evangelist desires to borrow their voices to restore her life as well as her father's innocence.

This case and its characters are interesting especially the evangelist and his approach to things. Very unusual but intriguing to watch. And I am just wondering was the evangelist and LDC's daughter both convulsing due to stress? That feels somewhat unusual especially when the evangelist did not murder LDC's daughter and was playing his role according to planned. I mean, if one person convulsed it seems okay but two of them convulsing feels like the show is trying to say something since not everybody who is stressed or has trauma convulses. I wonder if the convulsing scene had any further meaning to it? And we also see that in his flashback he was beating LDC? Or was that someone else? Sorry I get confused with faces sometimes hahaha. I am just wondering if it is LDC and if he was trying to help LDC, why would he be beating the man in prison? Plus his desperate prayers while he was in the holding cell. Damn, they just made me even more curious thanks to his good acting.

I really like the parnership between OJK and KDC.

Absolutely agree. OJK seems to be level headed and have very strong critical thinking skills, observation and methodical in his practice. He sort of represents someone who is book smart straight out of police academy when he was handling the insurance fraud case. Whereas KDC is this experienced and street smart senior with menopausal symptoms like mood swings hahaha. I am very curious why OJK who seems to be an ultra rich desires to work as a police force. Is his background merely a second generation millionaire or something?

I find it funny because I just came from OCN's Team Bulldog and this show has some exact same actors and there are some similarities in dynamics (rich detective, relations to reporters and working with reporters to get to the bottom of cases). Interestingly, OCN's Team Bulldog was funnier and more light hearted than their usual dramas while JTBC's Good Detective appears to be closer to the typical OCN tone and manner hahaha. But I do seriously like what I am seeing so far in Good Detective, first two episodes in and the plot + characters feel pretty solid already.

Edit: Read through some of the comments and I found it interesting that some had been discussing about the watch's appearance in the early of episode 1 when someone had dumped a girl into the river. I did not notice it earlier but if according to the timeline, OJK had bought the watch 5 years after the murder. It appears that he might have intentionally purchased it and known something about the watch since he left the auction in a rather frustrated mood than someone who would be pleased with their rare buy. If it was so rare and found at the scene of the crime, it would have been easy to find the culprit/owner of the watch. So how did it get circulated into the auction market? Seems like the owner is a very powerful figure with influence on the police force. And perhaps OJK might be intentionally wearing it to provoke those involved.

will comment later after watching ep 2. hope this is helpful to anyone wondering what this verse was about.

@Lmangla, thank you and that’s exactly what that verse meant. I remember that scripture very well because Jesus scathing rebuke on the hypocrisy of the religious leaders always amazed me especially the rebuke where he called them white sepulcher that appear beautiful on the outside but within are full of dead men’s bones. Right away I realized that PGH was rebuking the police and legal system for their corruption. They decided to take an innocent man and conspired with the prosecution  and judge to convict him of murder that leads to execution. The point of law and order is to uphold the laws of the country and if the very people who are supposed to do this are themselves corrupt, then the system becomes rotten and ineffective.

Regarding Yoo Jung Seok, JSK’s senior at the news paper, he seem to have his own motives in the LDC case. I don’t think JSK knows this yet. He met that man who is an Attorney General hopeful and their conversation suggest that JSK has a bias especially when he promised that he’ll take care of the media opinion. He’s also the one who was there when approval was given for LDC’s execution. He then called in JSK to write articles on the family members of the victims probably to remind the public of the impact of LDC’s “so called” murders. His actions seem to suggest that he wants LDC executed which is kind of supported by the prospective attorney general guy telling him to be careful because the Blue House might not be happy with the article because they promised to abolish the death penalty. So YJS has his goal. I guess it will become clear soon.

Thank you @Lmangla and @celebrianna for the insight in regard to the bible verse. It does make sense and relates well to the narrative presented in the drama. I hope KDC will break out of his silence and try to right the wrong that happened in the past.

It is indeed a sad reality when someone innocent was accused and jailed for something s/he didn't do. I did have a feeling that LDC might know something about the real perpetrator or the reason of why he was jailed in the place of the true criminal or the what extent the case involved powerful people - because it seems to me that he didn't 'fight' back hard enough to reverse the judge's decision.

Glad that @taeunfighting brought the keywords up again. Yes I could see how they matched with its respective character. In relation to YJS - it says 'conspiracy' - While we have three leads almost certainly in the place of the good guys (KDC, OJH and JSK), YJS is uncertain because we haven't been given that much information about his motives yet. Now i have a strong feeling that OJT will be one of the baddies.

Also glad that @fluffyloaf talked about the seizures! While watching, I was also thinking that there must be an important reason why both of them had convulsions and can't wait to find out about it.

Not so related to the drama but JSJ - @taeunfighting @jongski

Spoiler

I watched JSJ in familiar wife - he played such a different character than OJH! So like how it's refreshing to watch SHJ ahjussi in funnier role, I also enjoy watching JSJ in a very serious role

@snowlou, I knew LDC was innocent with certainty the moment the judge delivered the verdict and he whispered to himself that he’s innocent and he wondered why no one one believed him. I suppose we will get more information on the evidence and  circumstances around his trial. Right now it could be his lawyer was also involved in the conspiracy. I just hope his daughter will be helped. It’s very sad that she doesn’t even have a place to live.

I couldn’t find the actor that plays the prospective attorney general in the cast list on My Drama List therefore I wonder if he’s not going to have a large role in this show. YJS seem to respect and admire him.

@snowlou Same, I like that SHJ is playing a detective with a funny sense of humor. And, right of the bat, it seems like OJH is willing to humor him back. He seemed amused when KDC kept talking about his bald spot. I chuckled when KDC told OJH that they are like a "married couple" now and gave him the finger heart. Going in, I had thought the two would need to adjust to each other, but it looks like they are working together quite well. :) I am also liking JSJ as OJH very much (and his baby-face ).

Regarding PGH, I could be wrong, but I get the sense that he is helping LDC and LEH because he feels guilty for beating (punishing) LDC as a prison guard while under the false impression that he had committed murder. When he had that dream/flashback of that incident in the cell, he woke up shakened up and immediately prayed saying, "Please forgive me of my debts. And lead me to heaven" (repeatedly). Not sure how he knows that LDC is actually innocent though. I am sure we will find out later.

finally watched ep 2. am still not familiar with the names yet and so referring to them by my nicknames. hahahah..

like there are splotches of humour here and there. it basically shows that police are not some superhuman and everything is a matter of process. so had to laugh when they were looking in the field and the officer yells at one of the conscripts on why he is looking among the reeds? his exasperated question -- will the killer replant the reed like planting season? -- made me laugh. it shows that people do not go into the field and automatically know what they are doing. basically quite a bit of it comes down to experience...

@taeunfighting ~ yea, that was my feel as well  -- that smirk criminal felt guilty for his actions as a prison guard. he looks like the type of person who takes the law into his hands which is something that we are not supposed to do. the smirk criminal is clearly overwrought with guilt but the question is guilt for what? was he just guilty for deciding to act as judge and hurting lee dae chul? it made me wonder if he had been part of the cover-up -- perhaps he had been paid to beat a prisoner? or to treat him badly? if lee dae chul had been framed, then isn't it possible that he was also supposed to die in prison? perhaps, smirk criminal was instigated by someone in the name of justice and then realized it was all bogus?

like @snowlou, am also wondering if lee dae chul knew something as he didn't fight hard enough. am wondering if he took money to be a fall guy for a little while -- ajusshi cop remembers him telling the daughter that he will back in an hour. why an hour? perhaps it was meant to reassure her but I somehow wondered if he was asked to derail the investigation for a bit but for some reason, he ended up getting stuck as the fall guy.

also, who is the mysterious person who sent the email and the bigger question is why now? as the reporter lady and ajusshi cop are wondering, it can't be a co-incidence. why would the formal attorney general who was in charge of the crime division now have sense of guilt about the case and confess to the reporter lady that basically people from different departments colluded to frame lee dae chul? and the editor guy (that reporter lady's boss) was talking to this guy at the columbarium and the glasses guy says something about change and becoming an attorney general.

@celebrianna ~ the editor seems like a person who believes in a sense of justice but will bend the rules to make it happen if it serves a greater purpose. the way he told the reporter lady that we all have an angle and there is no such thing as lack of bias is true but it made me wonder about his agenda. won't be surprised if he was the one who assigned reporter lady to write up on the lee dae chul case but did it believing a cause and felt lee dae chul needs to be punished anyway. actually won't be surprised if it turns out lee dae chul is guilty of some other crime but just not this one.

the drama is good at showing how crime solving needs people and how it is all inter-connected by various departments. one small mistake can sort of snowball into a big issue. ajusshi cop trusted the report his fellow co-worker gave him. he also trusted his superior when he came in a with the missing knife evidence his junior had lost. perhaps his crime of silence was that he stayed quiet and didn't question it as tampered evidence? perhaps his crime of silence was that he didn't report that she had lost the knife?

Oly40 shared an article on page 1 that said:

"Jang Seung Jo will take on the role of Oh Ji Hyuk, an elite detective of nine years who does not share his feelings with others due to pain he experienced when he was young. He is not swayed by money and power, even with the huge wealth he inherited from his uncle."

If true, the inheritance may explain how he could have afford the watch. I agree that it should be significant and also with fluffyloaf's comments that he may have intentionally purchased it to attract some leads for the case.

Those are all very interesting thoughts. We shall find out...

I do think that as a prison guard, PGH may have believed that he was a member of an organization that enforced and carried out the law, but found out that in truth, they are corrupt and offenders themselves. As such, in the case of LDC, I think he feels the offense committed by the system trickles down to him (for having wrongfully beat/punish LDC). So, his agenda to expose them and to right the wrong for LDC may be his way to relieve his guilt/inner turmoil.
