I got a Netflix alert on my phone that three kdramas were coming to Netflix this month. Good Detectives was one of them. I'm in usa. As of this hour, I don't see it anywhere.

I'm onboard for this drama, too.  :)   And I was also just checking Netflix but saw nothing on the latest page and didn't get a productive response to a title search.  <_<

@thistle @celebrianna @Edgar Pordwed @joccu@taeunfighting @snowlou @Lmangla @triplem So sorry:(

The above posters that reacted to my it's on Netflix post. Where I did find it, they only do raw. On occasions they will translate. Maybe they will but right now it's out as raw. Since it definitely is out somewhere else, it's not on Netflix. Edgar Pordwed didn't react to my post but that's ok, just shooting you an fyi

@thistle

I've noticed the raw on several of the not-legal sites that I use but no Netflix.   Guess I'll just wait patiently (more or less) for subs.

This premiered already but  no English sub yet. It's Netflix so... there's delay but  hoping to  see subs  after  first two has aired. Please!

And there they are ... awesome cast.  These are good actors.  Fighting!

Checked the site again and there's no mention of Exemplary/Good Detective.  I am genuinely curious now:  is this on Netflix only in some locations?  I know that Netflix does that with some things (like the Studio Ghibli movies which I can't watch in the US darn it all).

Still no subs on the not-legals.

Which Netflix country do you watch? There's some hold back for Netflix for several countries, as far as I know.

Morning everyone!

Yes so sad I just checked and still no sub for ep 1 (at least on the site I usually use) :tears: Hopefully it will get subbed soon :)

Glad to see more chingus are interested in watching the drama~

@jongski is JSJ 40 already? :scream: indeed he has a baby face!

From the last character stories posted by Helena, I'm surprised that SHJ's character is the one who relies on emotional side of thing and JSJ is supposedly the 'brainy' one? So SHJ is going to be really like neighbourhood ahjussi type of detective? Haha

To All The Guys Who Loved Me started out with the highest viewership among all Monday-Tuesday dramas.

According to Nielson Korea, the first episode of KBS2’s To All The Guys Who Loved Me, which aired on July 6, recorded 2.7 percent and 3.9 percent viewership.

The 25th and 26th episodes of MBC’s Dinner Mate, which airs at the same time, garnered 2.3 percent and 3.1 percent viewership.

The first episode of JTBC’s The Good Detective also showed a solid start by recording 3.897 percent viewership.

Meanwhile, To All The Guys Who Loved Me is a romantic comedy drama about a woman, who gave up on love and marriage after repeated heartbreaks, gets asked out by two men with completely different charms.

Very interesting 1st episode. ...I'll  give a rough review/ recap...

We were introduced to Oh Ji Hyuk ( JSJ's character ) who was transferred from the Regional Investigations team in Seoul to Seobu station in Incheon. OJH is an elite detective , a graduate of the Police University . I like his no nonsense and calm approach. While the reason for his transfer was not disclosed , it was implied that he is not exactly a team player - causing his ex partners to resign or become distressed. :D . Anyhow , he is an out of the box thinker and very sharp.  Show also hinted that he comes from a well to do background- he attended and bidded at an auction at the start of the eps , plus he seems to wear expensive watches .

Kang Do Chang ( SHJ's character) is one of the more senior detectives at Seobu station.  A seasoned cop but seems a little jaded . He and his team did not welcome OJH to their team as they probably feel a little inferior to him. It was implied that they were not the most competent . Some of them seem a little rough on the edges but I do think they are an experienced team.  KDC himself is due for a promotion but he is also under some investigation for possible bribery.  These are misunderstandings I think. The Lieutenant  investigating him is a lady cop who he seems to know well.  I like KDC too...he reminds me of those typical old school cops who climbed up the rank through blood, sweat and tears, and had his training from the school of hard knocks.

OJH is made to partner with KDC. KDC tells him to ignore a missing person's case that was assigned to the station, saying that it would amount to nothing as most of these cases of young girls missing is because they run away voluntarily. However OJH did not listen , and investigates. Fortunately , he did. The missing girl is the daughter of a death row inmate Lee Dae Chol , who was in jail for murder. LDC's case was handled by KDC 5 years ago. OJH was also at the scene . My guess is that LDC may have been wrongly accused . This would have implictions for Kang's promotion.

Anyway , the plot thickens with a guy called Park Gun Ho coming in to turn himself him. He says he killed LDC's daughter and buried her. However he does not tell them where and wants them to find her first. The guy is a religious missionary and was once a correctional officer in the jail where LDC is. However he does seem mentally unstable and has seizures. OJH is the only one who seems to be able to read him. I have a feeling there's two possible scenarios:

1. he really hates LDC - perhaps LDC was supposedly responsible for the death of someone he knows.

2. he is using this to set LDC free...maybe he really found out that LDC was innocent , and wanted to draw attention this way ( wild speculation here)

At the end of the episode the police found a dead body of a high schoolgirl ...but it has not been shown if it is the missing girl.

We were also introduced to Jin Seo Kyung ( Lee Elijah) . It was implied that she has no issues handling tough / complex stories. She was criticised before this for highligting some controversial issues. Her boss Yoo Jeung Suk has asked her to come up with a report relating to some inmates who are due for a death penalty ( this was recently approved by the President of SK) . He feels something is not right. Lee Dae Chol will be one of them who will be executed. I have a feeling he is innocent.

Note - pay attention to the Chief of the violent crimes detective unit 1 ( Kang and Oh are from Unit 2)...something fishy about him...he was paying a lot of attention to Oh's watch when he first met him. He is the husband / lover of one of the people that Jin SK was interviewing.

the first episode was good.

about the girl that they found dead in the end. Could it be the girl who made the missing person call. the one who claim to be friend with EH.

Who is the owner of the watch that drop on the scene where to culprit was throwing the body to the lake. the actioner said that in south korea there is only two. and the other is now owned by OJK.

I also think that maybe LDC is innocent. he was good scapegoat to someone. maybe someone in police but definetely someone who has power.

I don't know what happened with Netlix. But, I read somewhere that it was being subbed by VIU.

Since VIU coverage area excludes US, I don't know if some other site can obtain license to sub in US.???

Since a lot of you say you are in USA, why can't you get it thru OnDemandKorea. It's a legit site. It covers USA and Canada. I watched it last night subbed. Most premium sites let you watch it for free the first 24hrs. Now if they are slow to sub it and take longer then 24hrs, that's another case.  You can catch ep2 subbed free if you do it today usa, canada time. After that it's premium and you have to pay to watch ep 1 and 2. So, please let me know if it works for your or not.:)

I just looked at VIU. I see it doesn't include North or South America.

I finished watching the first 2 eps. Thanks @triplem for recapping the first episode. Will you be doing that for all episodes? I think my brain will thank you for that. I always have a problem remembering things and who is who when it comes to procedural drama which only deals with one big case for all its episodes. Please don't read below if you haven't watched the first 2 eps.

I have only seen Son Hyun Joo is a few dramas/movies and I haven't come across him playing this type of character. So it's refreshing to see that he's playing a funnier character here. It's also interesting to see that the older one is the one who is emotional and the younger one is the sharp one. Most of the procedural dramas I watched have those in reverse. And for me personally, I haven't seen Kang Do Chul's expertise being played in solving the case yet. I have seen so far how OJK smartly found and solved clues.

I think it's safe to say from watching the first 2 episodes that this drama isn't trying to get the viewers to guess whether or not LDC and PGH were guilty. It's pretty clear from early on that both were not the criminals so I think the show is going to get us on the journey to find the real killer in LDC case and its complicated background on why LDC had to be made guilty in the first place.

I'm hoping that LDC and OJK will stay alive until the end

Spoiler

but I think it's unlikely since their names have been mentioned at the end of each episode as special guests.

Sorry for the long-ish post. For those who're more or less familiar with me will probably already know by now that I'm having trouble with expressing my thoughts in only a few words. So please bear with me from here onward :sweatingbullets:

This is indeed the mystery that I think will be solved a bit later in the drama and combined that with what triplem has said that the chief of crime unit 1 seemed to know something about it.

I like the first two episodes of this drama. They made a good entrance with this case from the very beginning. I'm still trying to remember all characters names. Haha it's kinda hard to memorize them all, too many dramas to handle!!!

The chief from team 1 is definitely suspicious.

I wonder a lot about the expensive watch and the real culprit.

The woman who lost the evidence and the chief who helped. Was the evidence sabotaged?

And the man with glasses.

That dead sister.

Don't foget oh jung se character seems also important.

I think everything is connected.

You're welcome @jongski @snowlou  Hope you get to watch it soon., jongski.....I just finished the second episode and like the pace .  @snowlou I will try to highlight what I remember . Eps 2 in particular had a lot details which would be necessary for later episodes.

So as I had wildly speculated above, Park Hun Jo  was trying to draw attention to this case and had wanted to get an opportunity for the press to get wind that LDC was indeed innocent. He had planned this out with LDC's daughter Eun Hye.

LONG recap (in spoiler)

Spoiler

But before this was all revealed at the end , Chief Woo ( of Unit 1 ) had sent the other detectives to go look for EH's body in the that field. However , Woo's boss Moon Sang Beom ( white hair guy) told him to pull the cops back. He felt it was a wild goose chase. But more than that , he did not want the reporters to link this with LDC's case. This is a red flag I believe , because I think Moon knows something was not right in LDCs investigations.  Another red flag - at the end of the episode , we see the lady cop ( Yoon Sang Mi)  who had investigated Do Chang for bribery in eps 1. She used to be his junior and during LDC's investigations 5 years ago, she had lost a critical evidence . While she was getting scolded by Do Chang , Moon came over with the evidence ( a knife) and said had she forgotten she had given that to him. I suspect the Moon was manipulating the evidence.

Meanwhile we find out that the body at found at the beach was not EH's to Do Chang's  relief.  Neither he nor Ji Hyuk really believed that Park killed EH. So both detectives put up an interesting show while interrogating him, saying they found her body.  This scene was a favorite for me because I loved the team work between the two. Long story short Park took the bait , and said he wanted a laywer - asked for his phone because his lawyer's number was there. Actually he was trying to check EH's whereabouts. How ? He had given his credit card for EH to use, and I think he was trying to check if the bank had messaged any transactions. After he had seen his phone he changed his mind .  Ji Hyuk was sharp enough to figure out what was going on , so he and Dong Chang started tracing her whereabouts.

On Jin Seo-Kyung's front, the article that she was writing about the victims of these death row convicts were published. However it was heavily edited and had come out sounding like she had a bias. She argued with her boss Yoo Jung Seok about it , but he told her it was necessary.  Yoo sounds like he has an agenda of his own with regards to the death penalty.  Later it was shown , that Yoo has political ties and he was somewhat doing favours for this politician who was aiming to be the Attorney General.

In the past SK had help put an ex Attorney General in jail with one of her exposes. This guy sent someone to bring her to see him. He needed her help and threw her a bait. He told her that LDC was innocent. Now SK also wrote on the case 5 years ago. She called Do Chang after that and met him. She asked if he was sure LDC was innocent. She said she was going to write about what the ex AG had told her . So after some negotiation, she agreed not to write anything about it first as DC said they were looking for EH who had gone missing . He did not want her article to compromise their investigations.

Do Chang is beginning to see  that something may have not been right with LDC's case. He spoke to the Chief of Unit 1 - Nam Kook Hyun ( I am suspicious of this guy too) and asked him if he was sure there were no problems with LDC's case then. Nam was the one who had done the investigations and LDC was just the detective that went to arrest LDC.

Now,  another nosy competitor reporter had seen SK meet up with DC. So he went and snoop around Seobu station as he had a hunch something was going on. He managed to weasel his way into the lock-up cell where Park was , and Park told him he had killed EH.  Honestly , the cops in the station are really careless and incompetent. So this reporter put up an article about it. It got the attention of the Prosecution office.  Long story short, the prosecutors wanted to take over. They personally came over to take Park.

As they took him to the van outside , they were surrounded by reporters and Park managed to tell them that LDC was innocent, and he did this to get attention. Meanwhile Do Chang and Ji Hyuk managed to find EH and brought her to the scene and it was all revealed in a dramatic fashion.  EH broke down , and she was just tired living a life of being a murderer's daughter , and she even threaten to end her own life on the spot by biting her tongue.

I am not sure why Park would go to such great lengths to help EH, but I suspect he may have been reaching out to her through his missionary thing. (What does bother me is that at the beginning of the episode , we see Park dreaming about  very cruelly bashing LDC with a baton  at  the start of the eps.  Not sure if this is real or not. And when he wakes up , he was shaken and kept asking God for forgiveness)

After all that, we see that EH went back to a filthy apartment . She was living with a bunch of young people who were on the wrong side of the law. She got kicked out because the leader was mad that JH had come to look for him to get info on EH. Fortunately Ji HYuk had been very observant , and came to look for EH. He somewhat followed her after she got kicked out. She stole a can of beer and was chased by the shop worker into an alley. JH also gave chase. Later she was found having seizures ( that Park had) and Ji Hyuk  called the ambulance and took her to the hospital . ( I am very curious about these seizures that both Park and her have.  Are they in some cult , taking some sort of drug??)

Last bit- someone calls DC - sents him an email showing a cctv of LDC working the night shift on the night the he supposedly murdered the girl ( the reason he is jail now). So if the cctv is genuine , LDC was indeed innocent.

So who was the murderer? I believe that LDC was just a scapegoat. It seems the case was shoddily investigated but more than that someone or a few people are trying to protect the real murderer.  Why?

Can't wait to find out next week.
