I was glad it was only the woman from Hanuk University. And considering the preview i am pretty certain she will show up.

I think she will show up as well. It is a petty thing to take revenge on the school or teachers for the past. But I will feel sorry for Sung Soon if she won`t show up or if the meeting won`t be succesful.

I  still don’t understand about the banana lol

I like how Bae Myung-Soo is joking about the banana incedent . He came up with a banana and looked for names on internet. I like Advisory Group and the little jokes they make with each other.

It was more funny to name "the item about 2 bananas and watermalon" just "banana incedent" (and not"watermelon incedent":D. I don`t know about Korean grammar at all to understand clearly the interpretation the students came up with but I understand what happened. Or I think I understand. The teachers made a mistake when they asked the question. That particular question did not admit just one correct answer. Some students who studied more than it was on the curriculum (they study about collective nouns for exemple in after school class) answered corectly too but that answer was not admited at first. That`s what I understood.

I guess collective nouns are difficult in Korean as well.. Sometimes there are subtleties that are hard to understand. Not even all the specialists/academics interpretes all the time a situation in the same way.

It is a rare treat to have 2 award winning actress to lead the drama - so far they are bringing their characters alive - so different from their previous projects.

very interesting drama, the world of teachers can be pitiful, but it's a bit the same in business, there will always be people who will want to take your place or speak badly of you but there will also be people who will help you

I will not be against a romance between Ha Nuel and the male lead or Ha Nuel and HW ok there it is badly engaged there is only one place of permanent teacher

the two boys are cute

i really love this drama and have been keeping up with it since it started airing. the actresses are really amazing and even the actors.

i do think that the old short term teacher who is supposed to turn up for the college advisory thing is going to bail out on them, or at least tell them something that is going to be really hard to deliver to the parents.

i really love how the college advisory group is taking care of each other and looking out for each other. i also love how Ko Ha Neul has gotten almost everyone (Kim Yi Boon, Ji Hae Woon, her students etc) to like and respect her. i ship her with JHW tho, but i don't think they are going to end up together. or she's going to end up with anyone either, since that's not the point of the drama. but a girl can dream (:

also on that note, i don't think JHW is the one posting those comments on the website. someone said it before that the short term teacher who is awfully subtly suspicious is the one doing it and i wholeheartedly agree with them.

also, i don't like Yoo Ra. while i understand why she does some of the things she does, she has way too much ego. the rich boy whose books she was using, was ready to share the books with her. he just wanted her to apologize, but she wasn't even ready to do that. i get that she feels like everyone is targeting her since she is poor, and i know that she will have a character development, but right now it's very hard to like her character. she's extremely hardworking and determined, but she's very childish.

anyhow, can't wait for the next week's episode! (((((:

And just to add, to the school, students and parents are like 'customers' which the school cannot afford to upset.:sweatingbullets:

Sharing this article which translated what the casts and producer said about the drama:

https://mengnews.joins.com/view.aspx?gCat=020&aId=3071351

The cast of the upcoming tvN drama series “Black Dog” guarantees that their portrayal of teachers will be more “real” than any other drama series, thanks to the meticulous work of director Hwang Joon-hyuk.

Although the drama is set at a private high school in southern Seoul’s competitive Daechi-dong neighborhood, the show is more like a documentary that captures the everyday lives of teachers rather than putting the spotlight on the students.

“If ‘SKY Castle’ told the story of the aftermath of relying too much on private education, we put focus on how public education prepares children to be admitted into universities,” actor Ra Mi-ran said during a press conference on Wednesday. “In fact, parents of high schoolers might learn a few things about how to prepare to send their children off to college. That is how detailed and real the drama is.”

While preparing to play Go Ha-neul, a rookie substitute teacher on a one-year contract, actor Seo Hyun-jin interviewed several teachers in the same position as her character to learn about the role.

“It is true that what we think of teachers is different from the past,” Seo pointed out. “[In the past,] school teachers were considered to be a model that students looked up to - adults that students respected. But, that may no longer be the case now. The more I talked with the teachers and learned about the role, the more I realized that the teachers themselves still have that pride, a sense of vocation as a teacher, whether or not they were regular or substitute teachers. This is a job that you can’t do if you don’t care and have aspirations for your students.”

Director Hwang also pointed to how authentic the characters are in the drama.

“I personally hope that people of all generations can watch the drama and wonder, ‘How are the actors so much like the teachers I had during my school years?’” Hwang said. “That is, I think, the biggest merit of this drama. The script itself was very detailed from the start, and it points out the irony of the educational environment, but not in an uncomfortable way. Viewers can see how teachers struggle with their personal and vocational worries amidst tears and laughs.”

“It definitely does not take on the tone of accusing or criticizing anybody, but still manages to point out the current problems in the Korean education system through the troubles of the teachers,” Ha Jun said, explaining the drama’s title “Black Dog,” a reference to Black Dog Syndrome.

The syndrome refers to the phenomenon in which black dogs are passed over for adoption in favor of lighter-colored dogs.

“Like the title implies, maybe teachers have their own personal stories, or even traumas from the classroom, but it’s about how they overcome it through love and compassion.”

Well as for the loveline, I thought it is most likely between HN and YW:grimace:?

I am actually quite impressed with her persistence in the Banana Incident.

Ironically if not for her diligence in taking down notes and examples of the collective nouns, that bespectacled teacher would have gone 'scot-free' with his mistake. So annoying to see him threatening Ji Hae Woon. Luckily HW did the right thing in exposing the mistake at the meeting. I was thinking the writer sort of made him more likeable in the latest episode.

Nice analogy.

Thanks for the translation. I like this drama very much because it is a slice of life drama. I can relate to this story and I really like that all the characters are like real people, with flaws and qualities. Some are more loveble, others are tolerable . I like this writer`s style and I will watch her next drama.

Black Dog: Episode 7

by lovepark

blackdog07-00185.jpg

Managing clubs, writing exam questions, and answering students’ questions all seem like mundane tasks teachers must do, but our beginning teacher soon learns that behind these simple activities is a power struggle between teachers that complicate matters. Though not everything is straightforward, sometimes the answers are still simple, and slowly but surely, our main protagonist becomes a better teacher than she was before.

EPISODE 7 RECAP

blackdog07-00001.jpgblackdog07-00002.jpg

Hae-won overhears Haneul and Yeon-woo arguing about him taking the fall, so he asks them what they mean. As Yeon-woo leaves frustrated, Haneul mentions Teacher Ha’s test questions to Hae-won, but to her shock, he dismisses her concerns. When Haneul calls him again, he replies, “Know your place, Teacher.”

Once the school day ends, Teacher Moon drives home and remembers Hae-won’s past, including his time as a student. He then recalls the argument he witnessed between Haneul and Yeon-woo, and suddenly, he suddenly turns his car around.

Meanwhile, Haneul walks home, still conflicted over what to do, and starts writing a text to Hae-won. However, in the end, she doesn’t send it. Right then, a call from Mom arrives and sends Haneul running back home where she finds Teacher Moon having dinner with her parents.

Black Dog: Episode 8

by selena

BD08-00287.jpg

Trouble brews for the Korean Department and they must collectively make an important decision that will affect the students one way or another. There are many things to consider when making this decision, so our teachers will have to weigh their options and see what matters most before taking action.

EPISODE 8 RECAP
BD08-00004.jpg

All Korean language teachers are summoned for a meeting to discuss the midterm question. As they gather, Haneul narrates that this is the beginning of “The Banana Incident” that would be talked about for years to come.

Teacher Moon fills Principal Byun in on the situation, which needs to be resolved ASAP because grades have to be submitted soon. As it’s the second midterm-related issue they’re facing, the principal wonders if something’s going on in the Korean Department.

BD08-00008.jpg

Yi-boon leads the meeting, introducing the question: the phrase “Sung-soon bought two bananas and watermelons” can have multiple interpretations in regards to the number of fruits being referred to. (Sung-soon, nonchalantly: “Why’d they use my name?” Heh.)

The students were to identify two different fruit combinations that make sense within this context (for example: 2 bananas + 2 watermelons, 1 banana + 1 watermelon). However, points were not rewarded for answering that there are 2 “bananas-and-watermelons.”

Oh it's my pleasure to share the article @larus:D. Actually  I was hoping to see more Soompi articles on this drama though. :P

Talking about the drama title, to be honest if not for the leads I might not pick up the drama and I guess many are not watching this maybe because it sounds too dark?   But I think we have some humour especially in the latest episode:lol: eg. Bae Myung Soo is always teasing Sung Soon even though she is his superior. (:w00t:The teachers day lyrics were so funny:)

The translations mentioned it is happening at noon? Any SHJ fans here have the details?

Oh I want to add that I actually like how strong her character is as teacher Sky.

:sweat_smile:what she said to HJW in this scene should be listed as one of those relatable kdrama quotes :

The video from her management was just posted. Soop's been great - Eng Subbed videos especially given how international her fanbase is. She's hilarious in it.

Loved the past week's episode. I love Haneul and her boys!! I love the all the different aspects of the drama, especially it's hidden humour and how gray it is vs. black and white.

Stills of ep. 9

I'm curious will the admission officer Song Chan Hee be impartial speaking fair words of advice or showing some sarcasm to the school to take revenge for how she was treated before as short term teacher? And what serious situation has occurred for Sung Soon to have that mic dropped scene in ep. 9 preview?

Glad that now Hae Won can click well with Ha Neul and Yeon Woo, before that he was a lone ranger! My impression of him has changed after ep. 7. He is also a passionate teacher truly love his students, not a greedy guy just aiming for success!  Can't wait to watch ep. 9 tonight!

More stills!

OMG! This is the OST I’m looking forward to! This was when I cried on the first episode. Ohh that voice!

And here’s the lyrics:

You fall out of night time
when we’re here
Your horizon be changed
by yourself

You’ve gone to stay without stars
You make me feel relieved
when time awake
And where are you
and just stay here and know

In your eyes
Strolling in the sky without air
Controlling fire no wind
Take me the small room
I can live alone
But I won’t tell you gone

You’ve gone to stay without stars
You make me feel relieved
when time awake
And where are you
and just stay here and know

In your eyes
Strolling in the sky

In your eyes
In your eyes
Strolling in the sky without air
Strolling in the sky without air
Controlling fire no wind
Take me the small room
I can live alone
But I won’t tell you gone

I think most people read the synopsis before wanting to watch. Not many people likes slice of life dramas or mayby people are  watching but it doesn`t generate lots of discusions. But I am glad that Korean audience gives this drama a chance. It is a good drama.

I see that many new writers are making a succesful debut. I am very happy to see that. I will check this writer next work for sure.

3 Key Points To Keep An Eye Out For In Second Half of “Black Dog”

Jan 13, 2020
by C. Hong

As tvN’s “Black Dog” moves into its second half, the production staff named three key points viewers should keep their eye on.

“Black Dog” tells the story of Go Ha Neul (Seo Hyun Jin), a temporary “short-term” teacher who struggles to keep her dreams alive amidst the bitter realities of her job.

Becoming a “real” teacher

seo-hyun-jin-black-dog.jpg

Go Ha Neul had a rocky entrance into the fragile and dangerous world of private high school education. Against her will, she was misunderstood as having gotten the job only through her personal connections. Although she struggled at first, she worked hard to solve problems from the students’ point of view and her small words and actions began making an impact on the school. Having experienced the pain of being a “temporary” teacher, she became determined to achieve full-time status.

If the first half of the drama was about a rookie teacher struggling to survive in the cutthroat world of education and slowly becoming a valued member of the admissions department, the second half will be about her maturing into a “real” teacher. A key point will be whether she can get full-time status to remain with the students with whom she has bonded and which has been her dream for so long.

The battle of college admissions

ra-mi-ran-black-dog.jpg

A major focus of the drama, which centers around a private high school, is the intense competition for university admissions in South Korea. Park Sung Soon (Ra Mi Ran), a veteran teacher and the head of the admissions department at Go Ha Neul’s school, believes that “apart from classes, a teacher’s job is to help students go to the university they want.” Helping her in this difficult job are Do Yeon Woo (Ha Joon) and Bae Myung Soo (Lee Chang Hoon).

A private high school’s reputation depends on its students getting into prestigious universities. Although the admissions department was aggressive in its “business” strategies, they were not able to get the results they desired. However, after learning that the problem is not their students’ abilities but their school’s system, the admissions department decided to go head-to-head with the school.

The teachers’ fight to ensure a fair admissions process and the students’ intense competition to build their “specs” (grades, extracurriculars, accomplishments) will be key watch points for the second half of the drama.

The “hyper-reality” of modern education

black-dog-seo-hyun-jin.jpg

A major theme of “Black Dog” has been its ultra-realistic portrayal of the world of education. Common mistakes made by first-time teachers, invisible but fierce fights among teachers about rank, and the struggles of teachers who set aside their personal differences to think about their students’ future are all problems that the drama tackled in its first half.

“Black Dog” aims to show that the school may be a place of learning, but it is also a workplace and a microcosm of society. In the second half, the drama will show how this becomes exacerbated in the tense environment of college entrance examinations. While it is well-known that the college scholastic ability test is a major source of stress for high school seniors, “Black Dog” will show how it also impacts teachers.

Director Hwang Joon Hyuk said, “As we move into the second half, ‘Black Dog’ will tell stories about the societal system that evaluates teachers and students, from the student record to the teacher evaluation. As the admissions battle begins in earnest, the relationship between newbie teacher Go Ha Neul and her students, Goo Jae Hyun and Jin Yu Ra, will change. Please look forward to Go Ha Neul’s search for the meaning of ‘real teacher’ as she learns to communicate with her students.”

Thanks for posting the lyrics. Love the melody and how the drama has been using it, but if they are gonna use an English song, they need somebody to proofread the lyrics and not use google translate!!!!!!

Another good episode. Dropped in the ratings a bit but all three dramas dropped today. I loved Ha Neul putting on Sung Soon's makeup haha. I'm not even sure why but I was holding back tears for the last ten minutes of the episode. There's something so human about this drama that really resounds to me - we all have our reasons for getting angry, holding onto our pride, standing our ground to what's right etc. - and this drama highlights this so well.

Now that was a nice episode.

Slight worried that after everything played out so well we about to hit a shot storm lol.

Everything has been playing out a bit too nicely to me (maybe other than the Banana incident heh!) so definitely curious as to what's gonna happen in the next ep. Otherwise, can't wait to see the Karaoke scene. I hope the wo-mance get to put on a duet or two!

You are stealing my words ;)

I just wanted to say how it astonishes me each week how this time an episode about university admissions can be so engaging and move me to tears :D

The plot description probably sounds really boring. I mean they work on some stuff, then they realize that they should change the stuff they are working on and work even more on that other stuff. Then you are on the edge of you seat because of some speech at a school conference and finally tear up because an office worker shows up and does her job. :D

And you are absolutely right. It is those little humane moments of empathy that always resonate with me and move me the most. And all that in a system where there isn't really any place for that. And SHJ is always so good at bringing those moments to life. I remember talking and thinking about that many times when i was watching Beauty Inside. I actually think that was biggest strength of that drama. All those little sideplots and moments. How her situation helps her to empathize.

Anyway back to Black Dog. This episode had tons of those moments.

That scene where the Song Chan Hui from hanuk university is literally held up at the gate because she is an outsider and they can't identify her. But how Yoon Yeo-Hwa recongizes her and meets her in such a genuine way. And how that little moment changes her whole perspective. And Do Yeon-Woo went through a bit of growth as well in that episode.

And yes the scene with Ha Naul putting on the make up for Sung Soon was lovely as well. She always seems to be so in control and unfaced. It was great to see that different side.

And there were some those "well people are better than expected" moments. With Koo Jae-Hyun looking out for Jin Yoo-Ra a bit despite their grudge. Or how his father turns out to be a lot more reasonable than expected.
