@partyon

There's no romance although there will be plenty of pain & hopefully action lol. I'm not sure if you've read the sypnosis but - (*spoiler ahead)

Spoiler

CJH plays detective Kang who is indeed happily married with a daughter. But he loses his wife & daughter though lol which is implied in the teaser trailer. Thus proceeds on a path of revenge.

I'm not sure on the comedy but doubt there will be any humor? Although the webtoon wasnt quite humorous there are some fun & engaging moments between Team Rugal & CJH's character detective Kang.

Thank you! Yes, I have read the synopsis, and know about the set-up.

I think I will give this drama a try :)

@partyon

You're welcome. The show might not be for everyone, unless you like action & crime shows lol but it all depends on the directing/writing. It might deviate from the source material but I dont know how much. Although there are some drastic character changes, hopefully the essence of the webtoon is intact within the drama's storytelling.

“Rugal” Raises Anticipation For Conflict Between Choi Jin Hyuk And Park Sung Woong Ahead Of Premiere

OCN’s new weekend drama “Rugal” has shared exciting new stills of Choi Jin Hyuk and Park Sung Woong ahead of the drama’s premiere!

“Rgual” is based on a popular webtoon of the same name and as an sci-fi action hero drama where a special organization named Rugal, which turns humans into weapons using biotechnology, fights against the terror organization known as Argos.

The new stills give more insight into the characters played by Choi Jin Hyuk and Park Sung Woong. Choi Jin Hyuk plays the role of Kang Ki Bum, a police detective who loses his wife and both his eyes and is given a pair of bionic eyes by Rugal so that he can pursue revenge. He can be seen holding up a gun as he is on alert, as well as being escorted out of a prison and having to be assisted as he is blind. It raises anticipation for the story of how he turns into human weapon for the fight against Argos.

Question: Does anyone know if this will this be a pure action / black comedy drama without any romance?

I think it won`t have romance just because our hero just lost his wife and he wants revenge. I think it will be good versus bad fight and the team members will have a camaderie. Even if there will be a romance, it will be subtle, something in the background. So I think it is safe for you to watch. :D

This is Choi Jin Hyuk, who is also known as EO (Event Organizer) oppa on this forum - we EOs heart him a lot!

Oppa is looking a bit sad over the fact that it took us such a long time to find him. :joy:

Let's see what oppa has in store for us:

Spoiler

We gift you smooth skin in 2021 !

Oppa is known for his healthy lifestyle. He works out a lot. We wish good health and toned muscles to everyone in 2021!

Even though oppa's zombie character was hungry and wanted to eat a chihuahua in Zombie Detective, oppa actually LOVES dogs (not for snacking, though - lol). He even has a dog of his own called Mongsil.
We therefore gift you lots of cuddles with your pets and/or loved ones. :kiss_wink:

Oppa has played a chef in at least two dramas; in Pasta and in the ongoing drama Mr.Queen (where he does a cameo role as a womanizing chef).
We therefore gift everyone yummy food in 2021. Here, some seafood pasta (spaghetti frutti di mare).
:kiss_wink:

We also hope that 2021 will bring us oppas. Lots of oppas. Also, some of us wouldn't mind seeing those oppas in shower scenes. *wink*wink* :joy:

Ah man - I went into this not knowing much about it as I saw it randomly pop up on Netflix with no idea Choi Jin Hyuk had a show out so soon. First 15/20 minutes in I'm thinking I'm going to love it and we're finally getting a violent action show after what feels like forever but it got so ridiculous in the second half of the episode. Had no idea it'd be all this gizmo stuff and Park Sung Woong does not suit fight scenes (I think he plays a great villain but him fighting the ML at that party looked off, hope him fighting isn't a regular occurrence)

I was really thinking OCN put out something like My Beautiful Bride again with gritty action scenes on top of a revenge plot but it's not to be. It's on Netflix so will still give it a few more episodes but the high I had after 20 minutes has disappeared.

Lee Min Jung And Lee Sang Yeob’s “Once Again” + Choi Jin Hyuk’s “Rugal” Both Premiere To Higher Ratings Than Predecessors

Lee Min Jung And Lee Sang Yeob’s “Once Again” + Choi Jin Hyuk’s “Rugal” Both Premiere To Higher Ratings Than Predecessors

((Rugal part))
Meanwhile, Choi Jin Hyuk’s new sci-fi thriller “Rugal,” which also premiered last night, scored an average nationwide rating of 2.6 percent for its first episode. Although “Rugal” wasn’t able to live up to the 4.4 percent rating achieved by the finale of “Tell Me What You Saw” (which previously occupied its time slot), it did beat the average rating of 2.0 percent achieved by its predecessor’s premiere.

Alrighty, first episode watched. I'm a bit on the fence with this one, but I will watch at least one more episode before I make any decisions.

I liked:

  • The music was good. I think a rock type soundtrack goes well with the theme
  • The cinematography was fresh. I noticed that the director was inspired partially by Hitchcock with a couple of modified "dolly zooms" being used in some of the action scenes

I think it was more violent than I expected, though. I can see a lot of men tuning into this drama.

Even though Park Sung Woong is great as the villain (like always), I don't know why I kept thinking of his cameo in Eulachacha Waikiki and by the end of the episode I couldn't stop giggling. :D Sorry.

Spoiler

Park Sung Woong plays "himself" in Eulachacha Waikiki, and is known for only communicating with his eyes and hands (not his voice). The main lead, Lee Joon Ki (played by the awesome Lee Yi Kyung) is a struggling actor and seems to be the only one on the set who can't understand what Park Sung Woong means :D:D:D

lol

Can someone tell me why he was put in jail??? I missed that part!

What I understood is that he is accused of killing his wife because of the evidences found (planted?) at the scene... and then he stabbed his own eyes? :sweatingbullets: I don’t understand how the police can come to that conclusion tbh too... They don’t even question the motive?

@partyon I am on the fence too about continuing. A bit too violent for my liking, and besides the point above, there are some things I am scratching my head too. In spoiler below

Spoiler

Supposedly, they cannot find the three bodies of the police officers killed by the dock. How then could the police force already assume they’re dead in the line of duty and hold a funeral for them??

It is also not clear what happened to the body of Song Mi Na. We don’t see hers being put into the barrel. But the boss definitely ordered a clean-up. And suddenly we see her at Rugal.

Maybe it will be revealed later on in the show but for now, these points are bothering me.

@ktcjdrama I can definitely see your point there. There are obvious plot holes (at least for now). There was so much going on in the first episode that it was difficult to get a cohesive and clear picture of everything.

Maybe try one more episode? That's what I will do. :)
