I was curious about those items in Tae San's suitcase as well. Seo Hae's suitcase also had some peculiar items - a set of canisters filled with blue glowing stuff. Is this why the Control Bureau is after her? They must be critical to the time travel operation or the time traveler(s).

I'm not an expert in quantum physics, quantum entanglement, etc... nor did I watch Dark.  I am going to pose my theories and guesses on the simplest explanations so that logics won't fail me.

I think all roads and answers will lead to Tan Sul.  Specifically to his absence in the future.  My guess is Tae Sul is either dead or not around at the beginning of the movie when we see illegal immigrants being uploaded at the station.  After his death, his invention got into the wrong hands which lead to the holocaust. Tae Sul's decision at his wedding triggered all events afterward.  

 

I think he chose to save HS' life at the wedding (gave up the world) and caused a cascade of terrible events.  In the future, both of them entered into the sisyphus time travel loop in hope of preventing holocaust.  

 

1) TS traveled back in time, trying to guide himself to prevent the events that lead to the wedding.  There's a critical point in time that he needs to be at to make the changes that can save Tsan.  He also needs to make changes at some point to avoid the scenario at the wedding.  We don't know when these are yet.  Is opening the suitcase the right move?  We also don't know but if we see more clues left by the future TS in the next episodes, we know 2020 TS is on the right path.

 

2) At this point, we just know that HS wants TS to stay alive.  This enforces the theory that his death lead to the holocaust.  She has failed the missions before (based on the diary entries).  HS' mission to stop TS opening the suitcase has failed on 8/13 so she needs to proceed to the next steps at Busan.  HS' goal is to prevent the holocaust but that means the wedding event where she is hurt has to change too I supposed.  Her father wants the same thing, for HS not to meet TS so she won't get hurt.  

 

Does it mean to save the world, TS and HS cannot meet?  Or if they meet (like in episode 3 in 2020), they must exert the right changes moving forward to save the world, TSan and HS? In order to do that, HS must protect TS at all cost.

 

It's a good dilemma and an interesting set up.

Why does Tae Sul have his ex-girlfriend as a psychologist?

 

I'm not a specialist in psychology, but I think the psychologist should be a neutral ground. Someone who has no emotional background for the patient, or for whom the patient has no actual past. Because of possible emotional problems during therapy.
Besides I have read several comments making this criticism (but they were probably not specialists either).
I don't know the answer that a professional could give on this subject, but in any case, as far as the scenario is concerned, there is an obvious answer.

• Tae Sul is using his former girlfriend as a therapist because he can easily get prescriptions for his pills.
• On the other hand, his ex-girlfriend agrees to that, perhaps because she has ulterior motives. Such as belonging to an organization that has hired her to monitor Tae Sul.

Whatever the case (heh), the suitcases are significant for each character.  At first, I thought all suitcases has the same setup, but each "cubby" is tailored to specifically hold their personal artifacts. This is weird enough on its own. But then, there are the technical/medical gear that seems to be integral to the smuggling. In Tae San's suitcase, there are different measuring meters and gauges, but Tae Sul doesn't seem particularly interested in those while Seo Hae's glowy pill bottles seem more important. I do wonder if they're asked to smuggle tech from future to the Sung Dong Il character.

 

After a quick re-watch of the first episode, I think it's interesting that the Uploader flyer ads at the beginning has this slogan: "Those who don't want to live in this world/Those who are left behind in the past, welcome."

 

This makes me wonder. Who's left behind in the past, why are they being left behind? We assumed that everyone in the future started in the future, what if they actually time traveled forward and were time traveling back instead? Maybe they time traveled to the future to escape the nuclear strike, left a bunch of love ones behind, realized that the future is horrible and would rather take their chances going back?

 

Is this just badly translated English, or a significant clue?

 great minds think alike. I was just wondering the same thing.  They look to be power cells?  Or batteries?  Did TSan’s have any of them?  I didn’t think so?  She checked them and looked relieved when she found them intact (?), still glowing?  Are they nuclear in nature?  They remind me of the power cell in IronMan for some reason.  

 

 

The Chinese pamphlet has bits covered by other pamphlets but from the words that I can read, it says you can negotiate for optional extras like a gun, bullets, medicine.  As for the strange “those who are left behind in the past”.  Assuming Sung SongIl works as a broker so he talks to people in the past (where he is at) and the people in the future (where SeoHae and her dad are).  I guess an example would be someone already made the journey to “safety” in one country trying to get their family smuggled in (who haven’t yet left the war torn country).  They need a “broker” to bridge the gap on their behalf.  It gets complicated because of the time travel element but that’s how I would see it.  Could be totally wrong.
